- As one of the most popular speed games from the Golden Age of Speedrunning, our subject today hardly needs an introduction. A game that has weathered a storm of criticism and emerged a timeless gem on the other side. Our story takes us to the very heart and soul of what it means to be a speedrunner. SPOILERS: It has come to our attention that we skipped over a little bit of history in 2018/19. While we attributed it to mostly Iwabi and Aloakirby, Linkus was the first person to go for UMSS in runs. Linkus worked hard to implement it into the route, and we didn't happen to notice until after the video was put out. Just wanted to give credit where it was due.
Linkus in his WR runs did partial UMSS and still buffered a bit at the end. However, he has gotten fully unbuffered MSS before. If you are interested to learn more about the history of SS, which includes UMSS, I recommend watching this video.
ua-cam.com/video/o32bxtKtXxM/v-deo.html
After Linkus moved on from wind waker sd, Aloa and Iwabi both were able to get fully unbuffered MSS in WR. To compare, Linkus got a very respectable wind waker time of 8:24 in his 1:00:50 run, but Iwabi with fully unbuffered MSS got a 7:50 wind waker in his 53:08.
Overall, Linkus definitely helped pioneer this trick and I agree that partial unbuffered probably should have been included in the video (I had assumed it just got cut for time). It is also true that Aloa and Iwabi took it to the next level with their consistency being able to get the trick fully unbuffered in many runs and attempted runs.
Hopefully this helps explain how UMSS started in any%
Final Fantasy 7 any% progression next?
It literally says Shadow of the Colossus at the end of the video
@@SpeedDocs oh lol. Maybe after Shadow of the Colossus?
@@SpeedDocs dammmmnnnn. Maybe he literally wasn't done watching the video yet.
I have seen the barrier skip discovery clip dozens of times. And it never fails to put a smile on my face.
It's such a hype moment in speedrunning history.
I still get chills
I laughed stupidly hard at "Ganon-Ganon"
So did we!
Yeah, I'd expect him to say, "Human Ganon"
@@jaredbarker9515 Or Ganondorf Ganon
The shirtless backflipping awakened something in me 😳
you could say it.... waked a wind inside of you
Best comment in the entire video at 1:09:00
"After attempting to whip it out for the better part of 5 minutes, Jim moves on to forsaken forest to do it another 200 times!"
He's a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will
I cannot tell you how surreal it is to see my tribute video for Gym included in a speedrunning history documentary. I regret to say I wasn’t aware of this channel before that fact was brought to my attention, but I’m very glad I know about it now. This video is so incredibly well put together.
I really needed to smile as deeply as you just made me smile. Thank you for this ridiculous honor. In the years since releasing that tribute video, I’ve cringed so hard whenever I remember its existence; how goofy and raw it was. This is the first moment since that initial euphoria that I finally realized why I was wrong to regret it. You may not be surprised to know that if I don’t stop now, I’d gush about my gratitude forever. Or maybe I’ll make a tribute video for THIS event?
All the best.
You're a legend, dude.
Maxing out acrobatics, very nice.
افف
I wish I had 1% of the ability to do those sick flips. It's a great video, not at all cringe, own it.
LEGEND
39:40 Not only did he get a time of 4:20, he finished with 69 rupees. double nice
This is like watching a Summoning Salt video narrated by the How It's Made voice, absolutely amazing
Been slowly watching this over the last few days. What I really like about your versions of "wr progression" video is the snippets from different years where people discuss the state of top level running at the time. It really gives everything a sense of histrory. 10/10
This channel deserves to be up there with Summoning Salt in subs. The time and effort put into these documentaries is crazy
Honestly thought this was summoning salt for a good ten mins 😂
Give it time it will get there 😌
@@JordanMartinGill the opening is the only diff
Subbed on the very first video over 2 years ago and was hyped to see this channel inevitably explode. Absolutely blows my mind that it hasn't.
It will get there
That was some superb writing during the segment about Gymnast around 1:07:30
"Head in the clouds" and "From the Outset" were genius and I love how you don't make a big deal out of wordplay, nice and understated.
Fantastic video overall too.
58:47 the sheer joy in his voice is priceless
Love that one piece quote at the vary beginning. Had me smiling from start to finish.
The way you hyped the barrier skip was seriously awesome. I was so invested on if it happened or not
this game has really interesting history, great work on this!
Channel is criminally underated. Great frikin vid dude 👊
Great video! Quite amazing to get reminded how far we've gotten throughout these years :D
You’re a beast!
The greatest to ever do it
Awesome video, super detailed and interesting throughout! Very well done, I can't wait to see more for you guys. Thanks!
Jiano was one of the people that got me interested in speed running. The guy's a legend. He ran so many games back in the day.
You guys are killing it every time. You deserve WAY more subs
Man, your content is so great I can feel the quality dripping from every single frame. Keep up the good work!
This is so nostalgic. I used to love following the speedruns of this game back in the day, and still do. I for sure missed some parts of the history myself, so it was really fun to find out through this :)
My favourite game
Good job on the launch party yesterday. Stayed up as late as I could watching banjo!
Found your channel when the Jak and Daxter series you did was recommended to me. I've taken the time to watch all your other videos that y'all made an loved everyone of them. I was always a fan of speed runs but this channel has given me a new love of multiple speed runs. Started watching twitch back in I believe was 2016? Love of speed runs for me started with ZFG and his 100% runs of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. I know it would be a massive undertaking, but would love to see you do/cover the history of the 100% speed run of Ocarina of Time. Then even some of their other categories have a long history to them as well even if you choose not to take on the monster that is 100%. Best of luck an keep up the great work!
I just don't understand how this channel doesn't have more views.
Keep it up, I think you'll be big in the future. I really love this.
Thanks for your effort on these videos!
Great video. Thank you for putting in so much work. Really enjoyed it :)
As long as quality speedrun docs like this exist speed running is in good hands, and won't be going anywhere, anytime soon.
Fantastic video Well put together my man . Wind Waker is such a gem
This was on the same level as Summoning Salt for me. Fantastic video.
i have never played windwaker but watched it all. fantastic work on documenting everything
Great video (as always!) You guys are awesome !!
Heyyy, I guess at some point your videos started finally picking up views! That's great!!
Glad to see you guys getting recognition.
Crazy documentary! Very high quality and exactly what Windwaker speedruns deserve.
If you give us a Meme Run Progression like BotW Bread% or something again there will be a riot...
No no, it's real this time
@@SpeedDocs Botw rake in lake% deserves a video.
This is such an insanely immersive doc.
This is a wonderful compilation of the speedrun history from this game. I was one of the many runners inspired by Demoon and Narcissa in late 2012 early 2013. My goal was to get sub 4:40, and it was some of the most fun I've had playing games on a live stream! I remember the great support from people like Cryze, Ace, Crazyy, Koljai7... Even though I wasn't a popular streamer, they'd still hang out and chat all the time.
I do wanna point out one tiny error, at 1:24:15 you speak the wrong time. The screen shows the 56 : 38 in July and you read 57 : 19 in April. Just a small thing! Thank you for putting in an unbelievable amount of work into this production. The fruit of your labor is well worth it!
The scripting for this is absolutely genius. Amazing. Truly.
Thank you for putting subtitles on your videos
Your channel is CRIMINALLY undersubbed. It really blows my mind. Keep it up, your cool mill is coming 💯🖤
Tell your friends!
45:20 I don't see enough appreciation for this remark. It's really clever, well done.
This was so nostalgic... great video
oh hell yeah an hour and a half about my favorite speed game
"I'm gonna go visit my grandma in Europe. I'll be back in a week"
*jumps off the fishing peir and pulls out my ocarina*
Yo!
I think it'd be really helpful to see a "previous record(/PB)" on screen at the same time as the new-time popup; it's easy to get lost in the numbers and miss how big of a change the new time is, especially with the amount of numbers thrown at the viewer over the course of an hour and a half lol
Probably just a greyed-out bit at the top of the thing that slides in from the bottom left?
Anyways, keep up the good work!
HYPE FOR THE SOTC VIDEO
Love your work.
Could not be more excited for Shadow of Colossus.
1:09:00 "after attempting to whip it out for 5 minutes..." how could you do gym like that :(
Daaaaaamn. I gave up WW speedrunning back in 2014 after spending weeks trying to zombie hover over Helmaroc's spike wall. Just seeing people do the consecutive hovers up Ganon's Tower makes my fingers hurt and takes my breath away.
Thx for the great video!
Big if true
Big if Cat
i love that the next video is teased
One of my favorite games in speedrunning is the dark souls series. I think that’d be an amazing video to watch from you guys
I really love the effort that has been put in this video. I remember watching Narcissa play Wind Waker at AGDQ 2013, it's really crazy how the run has changed over the years.
Great video thanks for the ride
I'm a minute in and wanted to give a shoutout to the One Piece reference in the opening, bless
Shadows of the colossus next? Awesome!
Awesome video!!
Boy when I heard that SotC music I yelled. I canNOT wait.
"If you're wondering how he spliced a segmented run, the answer is Poorly" okay that's amazing. What was the splicing even for? Did he like splice in extra currency or whatever? Unbelievable, splicing a segmented run
I forget exactly, but it was probably just to make a fight or 2 faster in the final time
I know about this story. TSA spliced in the middle of a segment, which is not allowed in this sort of segmented runs. The splice was proved because the cursor in the pause menu was in the wrong place in several pauses, which means the runner had saved and quit and added a splice during a loading zone.
The rules behind these segmented runs is that you need to separate your segments by saving and quitting the game. Any other start or end point to a segment is not allowed. This was old SDA rules and was the main way to speedrun games, much more common than the real time attack runs from today.
Amazing work, you deserve all the priasd you're getting in the comments!
Phenomenal video!
Man i just want to say, what an excellent presentation and production. I enjoyed every minute of this. Wind Waker is a beloved game from my childhood, and these speedrun stories are so intriguing and even inspiring. Great job everyone who contributed to this, whether through achievement or insight.
1:16:47 epic quote. Linkus was the most entertaining streamer in this video hands down.
Damn, that barrier at Gannon’s castle. It’s like the developers were aware of the various skip glitches in the game. Then, instead of gruelingly fixing them throughout the game, the focused 1000% on Gannon’s barrier. Just as a specific HA to any%ers
Damn I love these videos.. I wanna get into speed running.. I think my first game will be goof troop on snes
I followed this game’s speedrun legacy since narcissa was playing. Y’all did a fantastic job putting together a documentation of its history I don’t think anyone could have done a better. 👍 love watching your videos keep up the good work
You shore did knot go sea-sy on the nautical puns!
this is one of the best speedrunning related videos i have ever seen. the puns, information, and storytelling were top teir. Will definitely be coming back for more speeddocs
Thank you so much :)
2:40 Link is in surprisingly good shape for having just been hit by a canonball
Were you not able to get s hold of linkus for an interview? I feel like he's a solid dude and would have loved to do one.
If we had infinite time, I'd have loved to get everyone involved on the project, but we did not reach out to him. He would have been great though
Such a great video and worth the wait.
But can it truly compete with pizza% ?
Some of the word play is so subtle but great.
such a great video
Gymnast and Linkus interview? Idk but I hope so
Gym yes, Linkus no
@@SpeedDocs That's disappointing of him. I wonder why he refused.
An important clarification, we weren't saying anyone refused. Gymnast was interview for the video, and Linkus was not. He did not refuse.
this is the game that got me into watching speedruns lol (well wind waker hd anyway, with linkus and gymnast)
That Vic Mignogna english cover of Hikari-E the third one piece opening reference,
Don't think we don't know how to weed'em out
"If the endless dream guides your restless spirit Seize it! Raise your flag and stand tall!" - one piece
I got the reference! 0:39
I'm so efin happy right now
Did not expect acrobatics in my speedrunning history.
I'd love to see a history on Skyward Sword any%, the game that lay dormant for years until a discovery nearly 8 years after release cut its time in under half, only for another discovery a year later to make things even faster
Skyward Sword is pretty nutty. Ice watched Gym's videos on that game for ages
Super vidéo !
looking forward to shadow of the colossus!
The puns in this video, man.
1:16:30 Linkus7 makes it into the video with his Ryan Lockwood impression KEKW
50:35 - looks like someone doesn’t know what a looking glass is. :p really though great
Content!
My heart is ready to forgive the pizza troll, no matter how hard i laughed ;) How are subtitles going for this one? I can't wait to be able to understand it
Script is uploaded into the video, should be processing now
@@SpeedDocs Such a great episode, thank you for the hard work, i very much enjoyed the fact that although you didnt add the interview transcriptions in your script, for obvious reasons, you still systematically added a sentence as ''the gist of it'', you may not realize it but just being able to anticipate by knowing roughly what someone talks about greatly increases the chance i'll understand part of whats being said. You guys rock and clearly deserve a heck of a ton more subs and kudos for the quality of information and involvement you put in
Iwabi: Now that I've experienced 100x Earth gravity, I have to train under it all the time!
I remember wathing narcissa way back when, and just being hooked in their WW speedruns, id never played the game, but the chill atmosphere of the stream and the game was so relaxing to me that i genuinly used to stick one of her old runs on to go to sleep to. I still remember back when i was watching speedruns avidly the amazing week or so when the world record kept going back and forth between narcissa and demonmoon (i think was the name) I then lost my internet for around 2 years and even when i got it back i kinda fell out from keeping up with speedrunning or streams in general til about 3/4 years ago i got back in to keeping up with stuff just to learn that WW speedruns are now done on the HD remake and the WR is more than twice as fast, mind blown
I have a question regarding the wax strat, I know the neutral control point for the controller changes when the power turns on, but from my experience playing gc games, if you disconnect the gc controller, hold down a direction, and replug it back in during gameplay, wouldn't it also change the neutral spawn point? Wouldn't that be useful?
Yes, it's the same concept. We didnt want to spend too much time on it to explain every method. Theres also a button combo you can hold on the controller to reset the position without unplugging it
What's the song that starts at about 22:25? I know it's a remix of Aquatic Ambience, but does anyone know the name of the artist or where I can listen to that specific remix?
It's made by our friend Squidbird. The remix is on his UA-cam channel
Wind Waker pop off!
When will the Shadows of the collossus video be uploaded?
Sooooooon
HolyS sotc! One of my favourite games of all time, count me in :P
Around the 30:20 mark, you said "January 28th" but the text for the run says "June 28th". Great video as always, though!
the pun game is ON POINT this video
CJ snuck in quiet a few Zingers
Summoning salt has become famous and soon will you. Keep up the good work and I love your videos!
Huge congrats to Kirby on the comeback!!!
"If the endless dream of speedrun perfection guides your restless spirit, cease it. Raise your flag and join us."
I see what you did there. I love One Piece.
