I'm unbelievably happy that you guys decided to approach us about this video. I remember watching your DKC video when it came out and loved how much the charts, and player interviews added to the understanding of the video. When you guys said you wanted to do Ratchet & Clank i was jumping for joy because i think it was obvious to a lot of us in the community that PlayStation was never going to see proper representation if we didn't make our own video. But here we are today with the best video we could have asked for. From the very start with RJWaters segmented run to now Franz being the beast that he is. It's crazy how far we've come. I appreciate all the kind comments made about me by other runners in the video as well as here in the comments. Considering the amount of games i've ran, there's only really 3 games i've taken extremely serious in speedrunning and Ratchet 1 is without question in that top 3. Having all of my hard work displayed in this video means a lot. Thanks for doing this for our community and myself. But seriously, you guys are really making me wanna go for 18:xx..
I'm really glad to be part of that journey and was even surprised to be mentioned on-screen, even though I wasn't running the most popular category, as I was more attracted by the any% category than NG+. I noticed that the Pyro glitch was used for more than a year in NG+, from late 2014 to March 2016 when Drek Skip was found. However, Pyro glitch was found in June 2013, so it took a year and a half before it was widely used in NG+. During that time, NG+ runners were still using the RYNO, either because they were believing it was still faster (until Pyro cycles where optimized), or for technical reasons, as only a PAL PS3 could do it. It was overlooked mostly because it was the period where PS2 vs PS3 was still debated, on which one was the fastest until everyone came up to the conclusion that PS3 was faster with the conjunction of many factors (faster cutscene skips, new routes with less save and loads, faster hard drive load times, Pyro glitch, etc.). Note that the community made the bold move to not separate leaderboards, but ultimately it was for the better as PS3s became cheaper to afford and PS3 were region-free on games. And still, people consider the 30:28 run by Nuka on PS2 to be one of the best ever as it would be a high 26 on PS3. I love that throughout the years, we were going from "normal movement" to "absurd speed boosts". Over several years, the combination of knowledge, deep analysis, emulators, and some accidents clearly made Ratchet & Clank a top tier speedgame, even though it's still lightyears behind staples like Mario, Mega Man and Zelda, but I think no community other than the Racpack has put so much effort and dedication into a PlayStation exclusive and pushing its limits farther and farther. What a video. Enjoyed every second of it.
The original R&C trilogy are some of my all time favorite games. I am so happy to see an hour and a half documentary about the speedrun history, you've made my day.
Thank you for these ratchet videos. Because of these I’ve just joined the RAC speedrunning community and I wouldn’t have done that if these videos weren’t so amazing. Keep up the good work
Thank you so much for putting time and effort in this. As a fan of these games from my childhood I've been interested in what speedrunning could have done to them, and that's when I found out Ricky and xem running RaC ng+, some time in January 2016. Even though this might sound strange watching this category being run by these people basically changed myself for the better
Hey man, just watched your race against xem at agdq 2021, really an awesome one too see. Rac will always be my favorite gaming childhood memory and you guys embracing it (and this channel explaining it) ist just precious, keep it up!
Awesome documentary. I will proably come back to watch it. You explain things so noice and swiftly that person not welcomed to speedruning will right away get the gist of it. As a non fluent person having problem listening to english listening to your voice was a pleasant thing. You should be hired for audio book industry : D
Really great video guys. I remember started watching ricky at the time he and s-laughter traded wrs and all of the rac month I could watch. I was really touched by rickys sub 20 while watching it live and even rewatched it when it came to youtube. Ricky if you see this keep up the great runs. Hopefully I have time to enjoy your stream in the near future. Much love to the rac community who introduced me to speedruns back in the day
I honestly love the concept of this channel. While I'm not a speedrunner I love watching speed runs and these videos are truly interesting and well written
I love the fact that Franzcorr set a new WR just after this video was released. It just goes to show that he isn't stopping and has the drive to push the category to its limits which is uber cool!
It blows my mind how helipack long jumps weren’t even used in the first speed runs of RAC! Even a casual like me blazed around levels using that mechanic!
Ratchet and Clank 1 was the game that introduced me to the concept of speedrunning. I had heard of the words "bug" and "glitch" way before tho, since there was a pretty sizeable community of people looking and sharing tricks and glitches on the PS2 Ratchet and Clank games ever since UA-cam started. The segmented R&C run RJWaters posted was probably one of the first video series' I ever saw on UA-cam, and I was like 6-7 years old back then. Then I went to learn the tricks used on it myself and showed them to my friends for fame and prestige. (lol) I didn't get into the whole R&C speedrunning community until about 2012 when I found Xem92's runs of Up Your Arsenal and later when someone linked me to a R&C1 run made by Ticeman12, which was the first run to skip the Orxon clank sections and the entirety of Hoven. From that point I remember having my jaw drop several times when people started posting runs using the PDA tech, advanced movement and eventually what I think is the pinnacle of R&C1 movement tech, infinite long jumps. Even though this game currently feels very optimized on all categories and new records are very rare, I feel like it still has tons of potential for the future, and it is a game that people will enjoy picking up for the fast movement, interesting tricks and extremely high skill ceiling.
13:27 I really like, enjoy the way Ticeman like, talks. Like, there's something that like, speaks to me like about it for some reason, like, I seem to like, enjoy.
Lol, yknow, during the interview, I didn't think much if it, but when I watched the final cut, I noticed all the "like"s. That's west coast for you, I guess
that was entertaining. R&C was my first PS2 game. it's amazing that some people can finish the entire game faster than i was able to finish the demo levels
Awesome video. I can still remember vividly when Nuka’s sub 30:30 was the best run of this game. The Ratchet games and their speedruns/community really helped me to become a speedrunner and improve as a person.
27 god damn times. In the short span "tiseman" was speaking, he used the word "Like" 27 times, between 12:26 and 13:56. Does it not bugger the hell outta anyone else?
I was thinking about solid state drives when they were talking about the ps3 being faster on loads. I figured a ssd while not being able to be fully utilized could potentially save time. Glad I got my question answered!
I'm thinking at this point, the only real way to get a lower time of Ratchet and Clank is thru sheer luck. There can't be much else that's possible. And then as I say this, someone will figure out how to chop off an entire minute by skipping another planet entirely.
Got any links to the songs you used in the video? Around a quarter of the songs listed in the description are impossible to find. All the search engines and UA-cam keep bringing up irrelevant stuff or nothing when I try to find those songs.
We use a service that let's use these songs. For the most part, they are not available to the public. This is why we don't update the descriptions with links to the songs
One of my favorite games to watch being ran and one of my favorite series of all time. I think this is the sign I need to start running one of the games myself. Oh shit that's my comment at 37:50.
This was a really cool video, I don’t know anything about speed runs other than you need to be fast in the game, so having all this in depth info helped me understand. It’s insane to think people have completed RaC tens of thousands of times and can do it in under 20 minutes. I thought it was a grind to just buy the RYNO but these speed runners really ripped it a new one.
Its unfortunate how low these view counts are i think were going to see a wave of speed running interest from the gaming community soon. These vids deserve so many more views for the quality of the content almost all speedrunning doc youtubers provide.
Dude the guy at 57:51 I so fucking happy about his WR it's contagious 😊 this guy in the epitome of speed running... this guy in shorts and a tank top sitting alone in his room part of HISTORY for just playing one of his favorite games.
*Ratchet and Clank is so nostalgic, I remember trying to learn to Strafe Jump, I was younger at the time and couldn't wrap my head around it. I bet if I played again I would easily be able to get it down since I love speedrunning, find glitches, and finding exploits.*

Man, Ratchett runners are savages. “I watched this guy’s old run, and it was just, it was awful!” “We started to realize that the console difference mattered when this guy who wasn’t actually very good started to get the record.” 😂😂

Thanks to the community for being so helpful! -- CJ
It’s really depressing how so many possible runs were possibly shafted because of SDA’s weird rule set
@paula most of their rules were made as a "we wanna make speedrunning look cool and interesting" but fell flat
Ooh boy down look at Early Twin Galaxies rules then,
Monster hunter world speed running rules
You have the production quality of a youtuber with hundreds of thousands of subs. Keep up the great work is what I'm trying to say.
