  • Today's reading is about a little girl who lived with her grandparents on their farm during WWI. The writing was quite detailed and informative about what might be considered average life on farms during that time. And thanks to a viewer's suggestion, we are also doing something a bit different with reading.

The Hoosier cabinet is often misnamed as Hoover for several reasons. Hoover vacuums being one while the most common is President Herbert Hoover. Words caught in passing and regional accents often lead to such mistakes. It is very good to hear the details shared by this lady as we may need to rethink our daily life in the near future and too often we do not appreciate what we do have now.

I love hearing these stories of how they lived back then. We can learn so much by studying the past. Thank you.

It was wonderful. I was making our dinner while I listened. The joy that must have shone from that little girls face. They were simple times and all the more wonderful I'm sure because treats weren't common. Blessings ~ Linda

Thank you for the reading, I really enjoyed it. I'm 64 years old and my grandparents would butcher a hog, I watched at it all. It's so funny my sister and I couldn't wait to eat the baked pig's tail and ears...lol...it is just what was done. I think about my kids and they would be horrified today to see that.

Hi Tammy and thank you for joining us. Your kids aren't alone on how they would react! My mother (who would have been 80 this year) grew up on a dairy and pig farm until she was 17. Once she left she assimilated into the culture of what could be called "disconnect" to our food and how it is obtained. She was more comfortable buying food that had been manufactured and/or raised in "agrifactories" then using our fresh eggs and milk where our animals were well cared for. The thought of butchering an animal was totally inhumane let alone shocking. It is a crazy backwards world!

Imagine having to tell your child Santa doesn't know poor children. How wonderful that she was able to experience a plentiful day and feel seen.

Love hearing these stories, thank you for sharing them. The photos were wonderful, although we know and use many of the tools and furniture much like your family. We do have electricity, although used sparingly and running water, so some modern amenities among our old ways in our 1910 farmhouse.

My favorite book is, "Dr. Chase's Third Last and Complete Receipt Book and Household Physician, or Practical Knowledge For The People", published 1890. The book can still be found reasonably priced. It has every aspect of how to live.

I absolutely LOVE your readings! They are so encouraging and they take me back to a simpler time & place where I can focus on the important things of life -- the eternal things that God tells us to focus on.
Have you read any of Eric Sloane's books? I'm currently reading "American Yesterday" by him. He has great insights into past American life and includes fabulous illustrations. His historical research is amazing!
