  • Glenmorangie 10. A simple, perhaps even dull, single malt right? Well...I'm not so sure. I believe there's life in this old dog yet.
    Enjoy.

    Glad to see a whisky-tuber point out that a dram like that isn’t terrible. I think maybe we all get high-horsed sometimes about whiskies we don’t buy. My friend and I recently did a side-by-side with Glenlivet 12 Illicit Still (48%, NCF, no color) vs the regular 12. Two things stood out:
    1) The Illicit Still was the clear preference.
    2) The regular 12 did not suck!

    The one obvious malt that I perhaps should have started with initially; I'd done Glenfiddich 12 (as you do) and then migrated quickly to a range of other delights BUT.....I must remedy this and buy a bottle, especially as I've recently purchased an An Cnoc 12. Sometimes (and I know it's been said before), you need to keep it simple - you know for the days you don't need a peat monster or sherry bomb. The Glenmorangie 10 stays on my radar Jim, so I will be looking to grab one in the new year. Slainte! 😁🥃

    Very good value malt there. If you get a bottle of one of their higher end ones like Lasanta you can mix them to average costs

    Glenmorangie 10 is a single malt I came across early in my whisky journey, and still enjoy today even though there's been some lengthy gaps between bottles. It's a bottle that I will always recommend to people who are just beginning to discover whisky and has made many a successful convert .

    The problem with Glenmorangie 10 is that it's about the same price as Glencadam 10, and that's a no-brainer.

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  2 роки тому +3

      Can't argue with you there Chris but, unfortunately most "run of the mill" bars will still buy Glenmo because the name is better known to Joe public. I/we would love them to buy Glencadam...but they rarely cater to us enthusiasts. GC definately better than GM in that price range though.
      Cheers mate.

    Pushed the pause button on “if you liked this…” trying to guess the bottle. Didn’t guess it, but so happy I can still keep my last bottle of Hazelburn 10 unopened, and buy Glenmo10 instead, which is widely available here. Hazelburn10 was equiv USD70 in Manila before it went missing.

    I think we should all aspire to stay 'novices'. What's more pretentious than claiming to be an expert at drinking a drink? And who wants to know everything when discovering and exploring whisky is such fun? Glenmo 10 with that very light and refined profile doesn't really do it for me anymore but I can totally see why you'd still like it and get enjoyment out of it. Nothing wrong with that. It's a style and they do it well. Cheers!

    Thanks for your dedication to get us a review each week, Jim. I'm glad you find the process something you enjoy because we enjoy the output! This is a classic that was a part of my early journey. I've not had it in some time but your description of a simply, clean, likeable dram fits with my recollection. Perhaps it was too "ordinary" as I was launching out to explore drams of all sorts so I just never revisited it. I'd also say that I see a similarity with Irish that probably explains it being so popular on the Emerald Isle. Good luck with the kitchen-- it is the most disruptive room to remodel, but a happy wife is worth it.

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  2 роки тому +4

      Cheers Bud. Yes I've learned this week that the kitchen truly is the most disruptive room to enhance. But...it will be worth it.
      I think, as enthusiasts, it's difficult to not want to keep moving forward. This is a journey after all, not a "let's just stay here where it's safe and warm" kinda deal. But, I guess, it's whiskys like this that bring me back to earth sometimes. Also, it's at times like this, when I've enough disruption going on that, simple whiskys suit me better. I don't want to have to think too hard but I still want fulfilment of flavour ya know!?
      Thanks my friend.

    Glenmorangie 10, my guilty pleasure. Why do I feel a touch guilty? Because of folk saying it's a good beginners dram and we all want to progress and develop a little. But just as you say, it is still nice to drink. The Hazelburn is defo on my hit list! Like hen's teeth here too. :(

      "A guilty pleasure" is a good way to describe this Rich but, it needn't be. I'm actually quite surprised to hear so many positive comments on this one. It would appear that most of us are in agreement that, yes...a good beginner whisky but...still a pleasant surprise to return to.
      I'm gonna set aside samples of all my Springbank/Glengyle stuff for ya mate. You can either drink them when you're home, or take them back to enjoy later 😉

    Jim, Hazelburn 10 yr 46% ABV is available in the states for $142 plus tax and shipping on line. Glenmorangie 10 yr 43% ABV of the shelf is $39 plus tax. I offer the Glenmorangie 10 to new scotch whisky friends with positive results. Even switch one from away from Crown Royal to Glenmorangie.
    I stopped buy any single malt scotch that cost over $100.

    • @WhiskeyNovice

      Cheers guys. I wouldn't pay that kinda money for a Hazelburn 10. I buy it here when I get it at RRP of £46. That's about £10 dearer than Glenmo 10. For me it's very much worth that.
      As I said, I will always have Glenmo 10 on my shelf. But when I want a dram with much more flavour and complexity but in someways alike...I'll reach for the Hazelburn.

    I definitely cannot afford the time and liver needed to "process" a full size bottle of Glenmorangie 10. By no means I doubt it is a solid dram. Just I don't believe it will keep me interested for at least 9-10 months untill I finish the bottle. Plus it is priced higher that Arran 10 which for me is pretty much the benchmark for price/quality ratio of entry level single malt whisky available in Bulgaria.
    Having said that I'm considering buying a tasting set of four 100 ml. bottles of the 10 yo, Lasanta, Quinta Ruban and Nectar D'Or. It is on sale at one of the better online retailers in Bulgaria for roughly 27 euros.
    Cheers!

    On point once again! You really know your audience.
    Once upon a time I bought this as a gift box with those round rocks glasses. Since I pile my bar 3 or 4 high (literally bottle on tube on box on tube like a brick wall) this is in the back corner supporting the spare Ardbegs, the Glenfarclas and then indie bottles.
    I used to watch reviews of the Glenmo 10 and hunt for the box and take out the bottle to be sure it was 43%. I actually bought this instead of Bunna 12 from tasting them both that day. Who doesn't like honey? Still haven't opened it but I haven't given it away either.
    I didn't love the 12 year Lasanta so that's quite enough Glenmorangie for me. Someday I'll drink the 10, but I always recommend it for someone who looks lost in a shop. It is absolutely a no-brainer for someone just dipping their toes into whisky wanting a sweeter non-smoky experience. Monkey shoulder and Glenmo10. Damn good stuff. And thank the Lord I can get it at the astronomical ABV of 43%.

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  2 роки тому

      Cheers Matt. Oh to have it at 43% 😔 😄😄. I can't imagine that 3% makes a huge difference but, it would be nice if they could just release it like that globally instead of....not!
      It's a great, stable malt. Yes, there are better in that price range (as Chris stated) but...it doesn't take anything away from this "classic" in my opinion.

    All in all Jim the Glenmorangie 10 is a decent entry level malt and I’ve got nothing against this. Don’t forget this is Glenmorangie’s bread and butter whisky, it must be in nearly every bar and supermarket world wide.Haven’t hadn’t it for a while though , so if I remember correctly I find it quite perfumery( positive) also sweet and orangey. Saying that I probably wouldn’t buy it but as a gift no problem at all. I save my money for other drams, plenty of choice out there. Also reviewers shouldn’t really overlook these entry level whiskies its good go go back every now and again, thanks Jim for this review, slàinte.

      Cheers David. I actually expected loads more comments like yours buddy. I suppose to a certain extent, a lot of the comments were like yours but...you nailed it best I believe by pretty much saying you've left Glenmo 10 behind. I've done that with loads of others but, it's just one that sticks with me and I'm sure a lot of us have a whisky/whyskys like that. That simple bottle that you just keep buying because it's affordable yet still good enough (in each ones' opinion) to merit replacing. No harm in leaving behind the gateway offerings either though.
