In my mind it does what Paul says…and stated in another way and moreso, it also helps even out the frequencies…and really bring the character of the guitar and it’s “between” tones out. it’s a sort of auto EQ because the compressions levels or attenuates the peaks and the makeup gain brings the lower sounds (harmonics, frequencies) louder with the reduced peaks together and lowers the dynamic range…..fantastic. Compression is an art form and can really make your tone more dense and apparent without necessarily more volume…and you can ride the compressors output level to goose the amps input subtly or more than subtly,,,,it gives you a very wide range of dynamics expression in several blocks of your signal chain
