I learned how to play the entire song including solo back when I was about 16. It took me about a year to get it down and the local music store owner would always ask me to play it when I came in. He was an instructor too so it was his way of forcing me to practice. I stopped by about 5 years ago when I was in town to say Hi. He looked at me and said "well good afternoon and damn you are getting old. You know what to do, right?" and pointed the tester amp stacks. I'm 45 now and haven't lived in my home town since I was 19. He still makes me practice the solo!

why is it forbidden?
@@bosse-1760 Stairway's opening is based on a few very simple hand positions and a very simple picking pattern. It's popular enough that it's often a song that someone will learn early on and feel really good about, so much so that when they go to a guitar shop and try out expensive gear you KNOW they aren't going to be buying, they'd go to it cause they could do it well and it just got overplayed.
That being said, in it's current context, it's more of an agreed upon joke than anything. There's a dozen iconic, popular riffs that I can name that are simple and amongst the first a burgeoning guitar player would learn. Come As You Are probably started replacing the song that you heard way too much of at a guitar shop around 1991. Enter Sandman, if you were a little more metal. But the 'No Stairway' joke is iconic to the point where it is very likely that a couple of the 'No Stairway' guys in this video have never heard someone start Stairway in a guitar shop unironically. That's how oversaturated this joke is. Guitar store guys just know they're not supposed to allow it, and guitar players are natural little shits.
@@colinbanning9416 When I started to learn Sweet child O mine my dad was on me saying I had to stop playing that intro because He had heard it too much. So I understand that feeling of something being played too much.
Electro Harmonix is just GOD TIER. The pedals are so nice, Tyler almost forgot he had a skit to do.
That’s funny to see in print. When I was a teenager in 1980 or so, I was able to buy the Electro Harmonix Little big muff because it was NOT popular with the masses of day.
I WANTED the MXR Distortion Plus, but it was too expensive. So I bought the Muff for $35 or something, all my friends said it was shit.
Funny how all these years later it’s a fucking solid block of pure gold if you can find even a beat up original one, much less a shiny mint condition version.
They even re released them, I think it was after Cobain got big.

For those wondering why it's "the Forbidden Riff", it's because it's real easy to learn and is generally the most overplayed riff when trying merchandise at guitar stores, to the point where the store owners have said "Don't do that."

@@Batya-Grace Don't misunderstand, I like it too, but for some reason there is a stigma attached to it, or it's just been so overplayed that most musicians don't want to hear it,
@@Batya-Grace likely from being overplayed. Imagine how many kids going into guitar stores in the 90s playing that riff.
@John Fischer I reckon that's true, I forgot about that movie, but if you've ever worked in a music store and had to listen to one riff played by everyone over and over, most of the time badly, it would create that same response. It's the same response I got when I did it. Smoke On The Water is another one.
@John Fischer Wayne’s world caused it to be over played so technically we are both right.
Led Zeppelin's, "Stairway to Heaven" came out in 1971. It was so loved that everyone wanted to play it. It was played so often in guitar stores that within a few months (as I recall) it was forever banned. The guitar store employees were quite tired of hearing it.
It looks like I have to address the, "NO, IT WAS WAYNE'S WORLD" punks who are obviously suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect. I'm in my 60's. I was there. Stairway to Heaven came out in 1971. I was in high-school at the time. Wayne's World came out in 1992. My best friend and I were into playing guitars. As something to do, we would cruise the music stores. Everyone was blown away when Stairway came out. It was a really great tune. People who knew how to play it would go to these places to show off. A number of students would bring their guitars into their classrooms at high-school and play it, until it got weird. The first couple times we saw this happen at the music stores it was pretty cool. Then it became a joke, "ya think when we get to Guitar Showcase, someone's going to play Stairway to Heaven, ha ha?" "Ya, probably". It finally became annoying. It got to the point where we would see a music store employee go to a guy and politely explain that they hear that song so frequently that it's really getting on their nerves, so could they please not play that song.
This is what made me crack-up to see it on Wayne's World, because it made me remember the whole thing. Of course a lot of young people heard about it on Wayne's World for the first time and made the assumption that they now know everything.
So that’s the forbidden rift??????

The forbidden riff is a joke that was in an episode of Wayne's world from 1992 when Wayne pops into a music shop to try out a guitar. He starts to jam, but barely get off a few notes before the clerk grabs the neck of the guitar and points to a sign hanging nearby that says NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. And then Wayne says “No 'Stairway'! Denied” as he turns to the camera.
I think by ‘episode’ you meant ‘greatest film ever made’.
Oh thanks, i didnt know, now i finally know thank you man
Yes this is true.....but Why NoStairWayToHeaven?
@@nbnjtv because it's played way too much
@@bradhuff5131 why not ban Beethoven and Mozart as well 😂
if I ever get guitar lessons I would play the forgotten riff and adore it
I knew what the "Forbidden Riff" was even before I started watching. I don't play but my cousin and nephew do. I made my nephew learn Stairway. Very funny bit. You got me to watch the whole video. Thanks.
I am a rock chick from the 70's. Love Stairway. Especially since I grew up in the era of "Freebird" which I loathe. It will always be on or near the top of greatest rock songs of all time. Also one of the reasons that "Wayne's World" was so freakin funny the first time I saw it.
*starts playing stairway to heaven*

11:30 is such a mood. Sounded really nice.
Reminded me of some 90s alternative/grudge song, but I couldn’t place it…
It almost sounds like 'Rosyln' by Bon Iver
Someone should get a booth of their own and play the " Stairway to heaven" intro each time they do a demo or when someone walks by...This would drive all the vendors and attendants nuts...
