I love that he's actually giving humble advice on practical songwriting rather than just being like, "Play like me...*insane shred*....got that? I'll play it again *insane shred*". This is a lot more helpful than that. haha
Dennis Osborn did you know that Paul was once removed from a class that he was teaching to? He told the story about how he would just show-off and his students told the dean or someone in a higher position that they didnnt like the way he taught.
Toller Brown for sure. learning drums really helped me too as well as singing. learning bass and piano helped too. i found the more instruments i learned, the more aware i was of how a song comes together and i was able to be a lot more tasteful with my playing.
He was huge in his day and is still highly regarded by guitarists. I've seen him in covers competitions in Japan playing cover after cover, the guy knows more than most people in the industry and in that regard he is under-estimated, his skill level speaks for itself, he's a legend.
PG is awesome. Turns out he's not only and incredible guitarist, but also a fantastic teacher. This is the sort of lesson that all guitarists should learn.
this is what makes paul such an awesome guitar player and teacher. Some of the things he talks about are so simple but so effective, and he explains them in such a way that any guitar player with any amount of ability can use them. F*cking legend.
I still can't thankyou enough pual, it.'s been years now i don't even know how long it has been, your humble advice has been guiding me in approaching the rigjt way to become a better musicianshio. Gid bless you Pual...
This perfectly illustrates why Paul is arguably *_the_* 'best'. In the wake of Paul's rise on Yngwie's heels in the mid-1980s, there are now literally countless ace players, both known and obscure. Some are artists, others are practiced technicians. Paul's genuine *_style,_* well beyond perfected chops, defines his excellence. Total package. His lucid explanations and practical demonstrations are as accessible as they get. To me, Paul's also the most underrated -- or perhaps better-said, the least recognized -- and most in-the-pocket rhythm guitarist to appear thus far. He's an absolute groove monster whose facility as a rhythm player has always been overshadowed by his own prowess and fame as a 'shredder'. Nice guy, too. He allowed me to videotape a clinic he did back in '95. I *_MUST_* get that on UA-cam, all these years after the fact. Great clinic, with a lot of improvisation played off of audience involvement. Paul Gilbert is 'the best', as much as I dislike and discourage the use of that title, because his aptitude represents an ideal combination of what can be taught and what can only be gifted. Style.
Paul Gilbert!!!! I need say no more... but I will. From Chet, to Jimi, to Eric, to Rik, to Eddie, to Yngwie, to countless others of greatness, I feel Paul is not only up with the best but also a great instructor and teacher as well!
This proves that everything in music is a inspired variation of something else. Creativity is being able to make something of your own out a inspiration from something that was done by someone else before you.
5.17 the moment paul says "drummers" look at the drummers face! aww he caught the smile before he went un rocknroll but we saw it! must feel great having Paul Gilbert refer to you as a "master" ; )
One of the BEST lessons i have seen yet on youtube! I love this guy! Its great that he does these clinics because hes such a natural teacher and due to his career, teaching is probably not on his radar screen at all. You can just sesnse his pure love for the instrument in these videos. Would be great to have a one on one lesson/jam with him.
used to do this with vocals to guitars, i don't know what made me stop doing it, probably my teacher because he made me learn loads of licks (not that its bad). well thanks for reminding me Paul, big fan :D
Paul is truly amazing. Never new he was a really good vocalist. Putting the guitar and his vocals at the same time is something I was really inspired by. Truly a great artist. Would love to take lessons from him , I really don"t think I could keep up with all the scales he uses though.
1:35 oooohhhh myyyyy goooodddd i have watched a thousand videos of paul gilbert and always thought(knew) that he was a robot but he makes a mistake so hes humans its possible for humans to play like paul gilbert.. this gives me one hell of a lot of hope for the future
paul! you got me out of said rut! :D never thought it would end. although half the licks were racer x riffs n such so you kind of put me there to begin with. damn you and your great song writing and guitar skills. also thank you and your great song writing and guitar skills
Paul. You are modest, dominant, one of the best, and everytime i watch you i'm inspired. Everything you play is golden and I wish I knew 1/20th of what you know. Thank you Paul for everything you do :) ps.......i love you... LOL
awesome advice and a great guy and player.Too many of us players spend a lot of time of lead and solos cuz it's cool and who doesn't want to sound cool? But rhythm is the stuff, without it there are no tasty solos or songs,The backbone of all music.
when he says rhythm, it's also about having musical space... divisions between the group of notes instead of just constant flow of notes in insane speeds in typical shred.
Maybe he's sweaty because his guitar is like 13 pounds heavy hahaha Anyway, these videos from this clinic are like one of the best video-lessons I ever saw, and they are free. Anyone else would make this a DVD and charge us some bucks to see it.
I don't play much guitar at all. I'm honestly only watching all of these videos because this guy is so well spoken and interesting. And he's a fucking boss
Your not gonna like this but that answer in an essence proves my point. You listened to them they influenced you, then you made music. I played with a band for 6 years, people at gigs would say, what do you call that? never heard anything like it! In reality we weren't trying to sound like anything, but I realized we're doing things different, If i put my mind to it, it has roots based deep in other things. Blues isn't African, but thats its origin if you do that math historically and musically.
@mccheese95 He 100% explains exactly what I'm talking about within first 2 minutes. It's impossible to make some creative without some sort of influence. Even if it's a bird singing or a car horn honking, that influence is what triggers creativity. The genre of hip-hop was created using samples of music. People have sampled Jon Bonham drum beats when producing hip hop and created something new with that influence. The Paul Gilbert and Deep Purple example isn't that direct, but it's the same idea.
I love that he's actually giving humble advice on practical songwriting rather than just being like, "Play like me...*insane shred*....got that? I'll play it again *insane shred*". This is a lot more helpful than that. haha

once i realized that all music is rhythm, i became a lot more musically free. this is good advice for any musician.
yeah i learn alot about melody from singing lessons and ryhthm from drum lessons
Toller Brown for sure. learning drums really helped me too as well as singing. learning bass and piano helped too. i found the more instruments i learned, the more aware i was of how a song comes together and i was able to be a lot more tasteful with my playing.
His utter and complete LOVE for guitar and all things musical in general is just so infectious. :-D
one of the most underrated musicians if you ask me
He was huge in his day and is still highly regarded by guitarists. I've seen him in covers competitions in Japan playing cover after cover, the guy knows more than most people in the industry and in that regard he is under-estimated, his skill level speaks for itself, he's a legend.
Aside from his excellent guitar playing, I've always admired PG for how well he can articulate new musical ideas to other players.
This video has changed the way I approach guitar and music forever
This is some wicked talent, knowledge, playing, advice, delivered with humble heart. Truly rare combination.
PG is awesome. Turns out he's not only and incredible guitarist, but also a fantastic teacher. This is the sort of lesson that all guitarists should learn.
+stephen gilliss Agreed. I'm not even a guitarist and found this lesson quite useful!
this is what makes paul such an awesome guitar player and teacher. Some of the things he talks about are so simple but so effective, and he explains them in such a way that any guitar player with any amount of ability can use them. F*cking legend.
That guy in the background on the kit just staring insanely is hilarious.
Eargasmic Lesson.. Sweet advice...Always learn something everyday..Thank you Paul G and band...
I still can't thankyou enough pual, it.'s been years now i don't even know how long it has been, your humble advice has been guiding me in approaching the rigjt way to become a better musicianshio. Gid bless you Pual...
The world is a better place with Paul Gilbert in it.

Paul's lessons are among the most helpful I've seen - what a nice chap he is too!
This proves that everything in music is a inspired variation of something else. Creativity is being able to make something of your own out a inspiration from something that was done by someone else before you.

Paul is truly amazing. Never new he was a really good vocalist. Putting the guitar and his vocals at the same time is something I was really inspired by. Truly a great artist. Would love to take lessons from him , I really don"t think I could keep up with all the scales he uses though.
