Eric Clapton was once asked in an interview how it feels to be the world’s greatest guitarist. Eric: I don’t know. Ask Prince. I’m proud to say Prince was not only born in my home state, Minnesota, but was raised in my neighborhood, north Minneapolis. You were taken from us far too soon and we miss you, Prince. 💜🌧💜
@@AndrewMcgill-j5c by george, you’re right! Thanks for setting the record straight. Clapton did put Prince in his top 5 list along with Hendrix (but omitted Jimmy Page. I understand they had a falling out) It’s a shame, tho. For a bogus quote, it’s pretty great.
A bit of background. Before this concert. Rolling Stone had come out with its list of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. Prince wasn’t on it. So Prince came onstage here and let his guitar say: F Your List.
I'm constantly amazed by the number of people, certainly big Prince fans, that are completely unaware that he was a guitar virtuoso. Right up there with all the legendary guitarists; the man was an incredible talent.
If they didn't know that, they probably weren't "big" Prince fans. The real Prince friends know he can go from instrument to instrument with ease, and still outsing and outdance and out bandlead everybody.
George's son Dhani Harrison is on guitar next to Tom Petty. On the original Beatles version Eric Clapton does the guitar solo. This performance from Prince is exceptional showing his multi musical talents.
Prince was a very underrated guitar player. I couldn't wait till it was his turn to show how dope he was. I love his style of playing! R.I.P. Prince. You are missed beyond measure!
Marc Mann, who plays guitar with Lynne, took the first guitar solos, knocking out a note-perfect recreation of Eric Clapton’s original mid-song solo. There wasn’t time to get it right, but Prince assured the producers everything would be fine at the performance. He told the producer to let Mann take the first solo, and he would perform the extended outro solo. “They never rehearsed it, really,” Gallen says. “Never really showed us what he was going to do, and he left, basically telling me, the producer of the show, not to worry.
You're leaving out the most important part of that. "The show’s producer, Joel Gallen, asked Prince to play the song’s solos, since he was there to be inducted anyway. But during rehearsals, Marc Mann, who plays guitar with Lynne, took over. And we get to the big end solo,” Gallen says, “and Prince again steps forward to go into the solo, and this guy starts playing that solo too!” Marc Mann was an @sshole to that. That's why Prince left without a proper rehearsal. I guess he showed him in the end. ❤
I've never really been a huge Prince fan, but after seeing this a few years ago I was fkn blown away! Didn't have any idea he could play guitar like that. He outshined every rock and roll legend on that stage, it takes something special to do that.
I do think people who were critical listeners in the '80's understood Prince was a special talent and a primary artistic force for a long time. One thing you didn't really see much of was him having fun. I just loved the looks he gave back to the "legends" he was on stage with as he shredded. It just seemed like an inside smirk to knowing practitioners regarding an opportunity to elevate the entire performance.
This was a beautiful tribute to George Harrison who was a beautiful soul. And I love the fact that his son is playing guitar. And he looks so much like his father.
I love to see the joy that this song just naturally brings to you. I don't listen to what you say. I WATCH your facial reactions during the songs. That tells the truth. Your joy was evident.
Have seen this so many times, the smile on Dhani’s face is worth a million dollars. Rip, my all time love Tom Petty, Prince, you too are amazing. Hope you’re jamming with the greatest Beatle in the world beyond. ✌️💙🎸

This song was not originally attributed to George Harrison. It was originally done by the Beatles when they were still together although it is a George song from the White album. I highly suggest you listen to that if you haven't. Eric Clapton and George played on one another's songs all the time. Sometimes they didn't use their real names either lol! Jeff Lynne in the shades with the great vocals is singer, songwriter, producer of ELO, long time friend of George Harrison and co-founder of Traveling Wilburys. Tom Petty is the blonde who had a stellar career and was part of the Traveling Wilburys with Jeff and George (and Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison). Prince is in the red hat and a stellar career as well as guitar player. The guy on the piano who didn't sing was in several groups and had a great solo career. Started out as a 16-17 year old phenom singer with Spencer Davis Group (check out Keep on Running, I'm A Man, and Gimme Some Lovin' to hear some of those teenage vocals. He sounded like a 50 year old black man at 16 and is one of the 'blue-eyed soul' singers from the 60s).

At George’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on stage for this, the final, song were: Tom Petty (the blond singer on acoustic guitar) and from his band The Heartbreakers’ Scott Thurston (playing bass) and drummer Steve Ferrone, Jeff Lynne (with the curly hair, beard and hat) from ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and Marc Mann, guitarist for Lynne’s band. Stevie Winwood on organ who was a member of The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic and also has a solo career Jim Capaldi (from Traffic, with Winwood, back in the day) on percussion (tamborine), Billy Preston on piano who used the perform with the Beatles and had a solo career Dhani Harrison (George’s son with dark hair who looks just like his dad at that age)on acoustic guitar and Prince, who was also an inductee that year.
