The Biorock is made from exactly the same materials as the Biohome filter media and has a porosity of approx. 50%.
The structure is perfect for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to colonize so it allows for a full natural cycle to be achieved easily and compared to live rock it comes with none of the risks of bringing parasites / pests into the tank (e.g Bristleworms).
Since it is a manufactured 'rock' it does not contribute to the destruction of natural ocean habitats and actually helps to fund recycling efforts in the UK since the powdered glass used in the mix is from recycling plants.
In a time where the word 'sustainable' has no real meaning and has unfortunately become associated with questionable climate crisis agendas the Biorock offers a truly sustainable way to set up natural structure in any tank without destroying fragile ecosystems in Nature.

*Avoid using water conditioners which claim to bind / remove / detoxify ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as it will have a pronounced starving effect on the bacteria. When bacteria is starved the population will be low as it grows in line with the available 'food'.
A normal conditioner will allow the bacteria to fully populate the whole system and take away the 'need' to add more bacteria after maintenance / water change.
Most people get conned into regularly using bacteria additives and that is simply to mask the side effects from a damaging conditioner and a failing filter.
A normal conditioner like Tapsafe, Aquasafe, API Stress Coat etc. is all you need when a tank is properly set up, a filter is suitably sized (and properly set up) and Nature is allowed to so what Nature does.*

A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome filter media does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.

@Pondguru not sure I can word my comment in a simpler way to get my point across clearer, if your saying politicians have fake agendas over climate issues i would agree ther politicians after all, but if your denying man made climate change that's just factually wrong , the vast majority of peer reviewed papers and the concencous of experts in the respective fields acknowledge this , I don't get my scientific information from any media if that's what you wher implying by "mainstream media" as a source, im curious who your source for the " documents and evidence " are ? , as I will gladly read them if you post a link or reference, my epistemology is to go with the concencous of experts wether thats a plumber , mechanic or science and not outliers in the field that seems rational to me anyway
Love it, definitely will try in my next Aquascape
ill be keeping an eye out for some of this it looks amazing richard cheers.
No worries and I'll make a video when I have it available on the FilterPro website. Thanks for watching.
Can't wait for this to be made available.Great product Richard(I already use Biohome Ultimate in my filter).
Nice one and best of luck with the tank. I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Just got some bio gravel for my new Akkee HOB filter cheers for all the vids!
No worries, thanks for the order and best of luck with the tank.
Looks great that.
Great job Richard. It looks like the responses are pretty positive. I'm working on getting feedback in the US. Always great to see another new product coming. Happy Fish Keeping!
I hope things are going well for you over there - one thing I know is that the weather is way better in CA compared to the UK.
Tnx for sharing I wish I could pick bigger aquarium than before
one can add good lot of plants to these, great job
Yes, the structure is very good for rooting.
You Mr. Pondguru r a genius! I have ordered & used yur biohome small rocks for aquariums, small ponds. Ive gotten much older now & an aquarium is for the younguns these days. I would have gone crazy for the likes of these Biorocks & not being so heavy. I have watched u for years & never grow tired of yur content. Yur a goodman with great ethics, ideas, & heart which seems to be rarer than ever. Im from Texas USA. Yur one of my most favorite people. U given me inspiration to enjoy fish again. See if I can coax one of the grandkids to try & Ill get the stuff for them.
LOL
I didn't come up with the idea for these rocks - that was Michael who makes the media. It seems to have garnered some real interest so it will be available on the FilterPro site soon.
I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website but Don at Greatwave Engineering will also have it available from there and will be cheaper than ordering from the UK if you're in Texas. I wish I was in Texas as it's freezing cold today.
Yur still the BEST in my book!
I would buy this for my reef tank. Perfect alternative to life rock
hummm, this would be a good companion to my 8kg of Biohome Ultimate i believe, cant wait to get this available
thank you for being as informative and innovative as you are
No worries and I'm glad you like the look of it. Best of luck with the tank.
I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Love it 👌🏻great idea approx 8-10 pieces per 5 KG….I deal for rock mountains, brill for javas and Nubia’s mosses 👌🏻👌🏻
The fundamental idea is excellent , i do believe it will evolve into more athstetic shapes . With observing rocks in nature , you could replicate any formation
I'll be keeping an eye out for biorock on website 👍
I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Wow, would be cool to shape these like the Ada unzan stone!
Are there real world test in a saltwater setup for this Biorock? Time for you Richard to start a saltwater aquarium lol 😂
(my other channel) Biorock is simply Biohome filter media reshape into rock form - if it helps Biohome provides the entire biological filtration in the largest marine aquarium in N. Europe (Tivoli Aquarium in Denmark).
I've just made a video asking people to trial the Biorock today and that will be uploaded tonight. If you're interested just email me.
Love it, I used alphagrog to build ornaments for the same reasons. Doesn't look as good as these!
They do look really natural and attractive - plus they are perfectly porous and will naturally support a nation of beneficial bacteria.
Hi, love the look of this stuff, I use the ultimate from you in my FX4 now, just wanted to know if this biorock can this be used in all tanks or is it more for marine set ups?? Thanks.. 👍
( my other channel) It will be fine for marine or freshwater.
This looks great for adding a natural rock formation in a tank to give interest, height and hiding places and instead of taking away from the aquarium environment its adding to the overall full cycle. I like it. What size of tank were you demonstrating it in?
Sorry, I must have edited that bit out - it is 70cm (2'4")
this rock in pebbles style would be so awesome for hillstream loach tanks
That's a great idea and I will put that to Michael who makes the Biohome media.
You mean like the larger BioGravel?
@@charlie10tango39 (my other channel) I was thinking more irregular shapes which would be hand made.
I am very interested! This stuff looks great. Is there any maintenance to it? Do you have to clean the Biorock periodically? Do the pores get clogged? Will bacteria colonize in there helping water quality?! (I am a current Biohome customer)
If you do feel the need to clean it just bake in a hot oven for an hour or so, just as you'd do with Biohome media.
I'd imagine that 99% of people won't bother cleaning it since it will so easily colonize with plants / corals.
Looks real promissing! Hope the shapes of the rocks will get better, I do not like hat most of them hae a flat side currently. Those are very useful to use as the base of a structure and help with scaping but for the upper part of scapes pieces with no flat sides are preferred.
Good one - thanks for the feedback.
I will pass that on to Michael who makes the Biohome media / rocks.
Farting out of a volcano....epic 🤣just out of curiosity what was the weight on the table at the beginning Rich?
It was approx. 15kg and was made up of 3 mixed colours. I left the last colour in the box to show what size box the 5kg amount would be.
I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Any idea of when this will be available in the UK? It's exactly what I've been looking for to scape my marine tank, thanks
When I get round to adding it to the website it will be available and I will make a video when it is on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Great move Richard, this is the cherry of the cake. Are you already shipping yr product's in Europe, in small quantities, like 5kg or more?
Sorry I made my comment before the end of yr video. 👍
@@eues803 (my other channel) no worries and yes I ship all over the world except some S. American countries, some Middle East countries and Ireland. AnPost in Ireland reject everything I send with no explanation - it is very frustrating.
@@ThousandYardStare Thank you for yr reply.
The question Richard is how to ship this to Dubai? Haha. It's really a big imptovement over the initial "flat rock". Looks really nice, Anubias and the like would love to get attached in that 😀
Some countries are very difficult to ship to from the UK (strangely Ireland has real shipping problems) but I think I still have Dubai enabled on the FilterPro website.
I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
@@pondguru As always I can't wait 😀
Anyone ever tried those clay balls that pot growers use as filter media. Looks like the same stuff as the bio pellets you sell but different shape?
It goes under many names and is often used for hydroponics. It doesn't make for a very good filter media as most of the structure is sealed. However, when compared to many of the cheap ceramic rings they compare quite well and are every cheap. Go for the knobbly types of clay growing media as opposed to the smooth types of clay balls as the smooth type have very limited available surface area..
Can't wait looks fantastic I'm guessing it can be glued together thinking for shellies and rock dwellers list looks to be endless or in advert form this just any aquarium rock this is (m&s) Biohome rock .. lol or is calrsberg made aquarium rock this would be probably the best rock in the world...
Yes it would glue / silicone together. I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Where do you get in the UK it's not on their website
Michael who makes the media for me has some listed on Ebay currently but I'm waiting until later this month to list it on my FilterPro website.
Hi Richard are you selling this bio rock
wha wha?? Can I get this in plates? I have a hydroponic greenhouse. Looks like each piece has a flat spot. Are you going to make any that don't have flat spots? I like the brown color of the BH Marine, but will this affect my fresh water planted tank? do you have a version in the brown color for FW tanks?
The 'marine' version will be fine in fresh water as the added trace elements are fused into the structure and available as catalysts - they're not there to condition the water.
I'm assuming that you're in the UK so phone me regarding the plates or any other shapes - if it's something you could experiment with and give feedback on that would be great.
My number is 07772848730
Regards,
Richard
When will it be available in the USA? Thanks
If you contact the main US distributor they will be able to answer that: www.greatwaveeng.com
Hi, what do you think of cat litter as part of substrate for plants and helping to stabilise your aquarium ?. I like you biorock when do think it will be available as I'm thinking of setting up a tank up soon , thanks
(my other channel) mineral cat litter is essentially crushed pumice so makes for a decent filter media / substrate although in the raw form many pieces will float. It's essentially what seachem sells as 'denitrate' but they use a poor quality densely structured grade of pumice rock for their 'media' hence all the gray / black waste rock in with it. With regard to the Biorock we really could do with a testing period before making it widely available so I will be contacting people who may be interested in doing that for their UA-cam channels with no obligation, no payment and only the goal of having unbiased true feedback which can be shared with viewers.
@@ThousandYardStare thanks for your reply , obviously it would be underneath gravel or a sand substrate hopefully it would keep it in place , it was just a thought I had for setting up my new tank , thanks
@@weemac1956 If you're using it under the visible substrate then it would work well in small mesh bags. That also allows you to easily remove it if you are re-scaping the aquarium.
Loads of people use the Biogravel for that as it is a much better media than pumice or standard gravel for supporting anaerobic activity - I'm assuming that you're wanting to set up safe anaerobic zones n the substrate?
Yes, I definitely don't want any dead zones in my tank.also thinking of a plinth in before any substrate. Thanks for reply
@@weemac1956 (my other channel) Sounds like a good plan - best of luck with the tank.
Can it take the place of media in a filter?
Yes as it essentially does the same job as live rock. However, it is a much more consistent porosity when compared to live rock and it will not have the risk of bringing anything harmful (e.g. Bristleworms) into the system.
Okay, I have my checkbook in had. Where can I purchase the Biorock?????
I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Cant find these on the store? Are they for sale
(my other channel) I don't have them on my website but the manufacturer has them on his ebay site here: www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2323012.m570.l1313&_nkw=biohome+biorock&_sacat=0
Hi Richard. Will this Biorock be for sale anytime soon ?
If you search for Biohome Biorock on ebay it will come up direct from the manufacturer. I haven't got it on the website as it is best coming straight from the manufacturer to save multiple postage costs an double handling.
@@pondguru thanks.
Have purchased this today in Brown. You mentioned that the Brown colour is good for marine as it has trace elements in it. Would this affect my planted freshwater setup ?
@@ianscott1812 The trace elements in the red and brown are mostly common to each other so there will be many trace elements in the brown (marine) version which will be used as catalysts by freshwater bacteria.
Neither of the different colours will make a difference to plants since the trace elements are fused into the structure of the media (to act as catalysts for bacterial processes) and are not there to alter the water chemistry.
@@pondguru thanks richard for the peace of mind ! I have bio gravel as a substrate so the brown will stand out great 👌👌
Where can this be Ordered from please
We haven't got it for sale yet but it will be on the FilterPro website when available later this year (and I'll make a video announcing that)
Help help plz I have bio ultra in my fluval 307 my problem is my tank has. Been running for along long time with no fish at least two month due to me having heart failure I am on the mend slowly but can’t get much done will the filter media be ok will I have to get new bio home thanks again I know you are very busy guy thanks eric
(my other channel) Dear Eric,
I hope you get better soon.
With regard to the media if it has been sitting in manky water or left out of the tank / filter it will need to be sterilised by baking it in a hot oven for an hour or so prior to reuse.
However, if it has been in an operational filter on a tank which is working but unoccupied by fish the media will still be fine - it may benefit from a small kick from a bacterial additive (any will do) but if it's been running all the time while you've been out of commission the bacteria will fire up very quickly when you start adding fish.
Stock lightly every 2-3 weeks until you reach the full stock to allow the filter to develop in line with the stock and it will be fine.
Best of luck with the tank and your recovery.
Regards,
Richard
I run my tanks with Biohome Ultimate - a great product, I can only recommend it - the competition compares very badly 😉
Here's an idea for the rock material: Can the (un)sintered material also be pressed into shapes? I'm thinking of the typical scaping stones, dragonstone, miniature landscape,...
Many greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
I'm glad the media is working well for you and best of luck with the tank. Potentially it could be made in specific shapes using a press of some sort but that's something for the future. At present it is in random hand made shapes. I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
Why isn't it on your website? How much is it for 5 & 10kgs each?
(my other channel) It isn't on the website yet as it is still in the production stage. Next step will be to give out samples to multiple fish keepers to test and give honest feedback about the rocks, water conditions etc. and after that if we're happy it will go on sale.
Where can I buy this rock can’t find it on the website
(my other channel) It is in the very early stages of development and the next stage is to have a dozen or so people test the rocks in their tank for 6 months or so before we put the product into full production. One of the upcoming videos on my PondGuru channel will be a video seeking testers to receive 5kg-10kg for testing and feedback.

@Pondguru OK great looking forward to it thanks!
Update on the release of BioRock?
There will be limited amounts available in the next couple of weeks and I will make a video when it is available.
Defo be ordering a few of these to remodel my large community tank. Wonder what the prices will be. Not cheap I bet
(my other channel). It will probably be a similar price to the normal Biohome media since it is essentially the same mix. I'll make a video with prices and availability when I add them to the FilterPro site.
can one buy this in many colours in 5kg as a mix?
The Biorock will be initially sold in 5kg amounts of the same colour so a mix of colours would be made up of multiple 5kg amounts. However this may change in the future.
@Pondguru Where can I buy this at? I went on your site but I didn't see it
@@DjPosey3 I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.

Live rock seems to vary so much in price that I can't say for sure but it seems to be cheaper than true live rock.
Ok where do i get it lol
I will make a video when it is available and on the FilterPro website, no worries.
@@pondguru Ty fella
would it be too abrasive for fish?
It is quite rough but so is much of the rock used in aquariums. I'd say it would be less suitable for delicate fish (e.g. Discus) compared to marine use for that reason.
It’s a very smart idea and I really like the look of it, would be a wee bit unsure of it with Corydoras though.
@@brianwatt8927 (my other channel) As long as it is used for normal rock structures it will be fine but if it was covering a large part of the base then that would restrict the usable area the corydoras could use. The 'rock' is very rough (abrasive) so it would ultimately be more suited to saltwater or cichlid use.
