I love that homemade sump. I've been using biohome ultimate in my Fluval G3 for over 2 years now, and I haven't regretted it. I'm also using MarinePure by CerMedia in most of my HOBs throughout my "fish house". Lastly, Seachem Matrix because it is smaller than the previous two for some other applications. Thanks again for a well thought out overview; you are the best.

I don't think you can go wrong with biohome, substrat pro, marine pure, de*nitrate or matrix. I've had significant nitrate reduction with all 5 types, I even set up low flow canisters filled with de*nitrate and my nitrates are low for months on end. I've had luck with all 4 media brands and I usually just buy what I can find at the best price. Good review. Cheers
Nice! I've been using biohome ultimate for 2 years now (the duration I've been in the hobby essentially). When I first started keeping fish, I was obsessed with PondGuru's advice on youtube about optimizing your filtration needs, and would always advocate for getting the best bio media out there. For me, greatwave engineering's (the US distributor) customer service really solidified my choice to go with biohome, and I now run it on every canister filter I have practically. Biohome is definitely worth the money, and it does provide a habitable surface for anaerobic bacteria to develop, if enough time is given. The chemistry behind how it combats nitrogen is simple but fascinating. Furthermore, it doesn't degrade nearly at the rate that some of the other popular media does, which makes it an effective long term solution. I can't say enough good things about this product, and its awesome you are finally starting to get some! You should do another thorough video describing your experience with biohome after a few months.
Does it really reduces nitrates to 0 over time?
After more than 6 month I don't see any effect
@@JosephKarthic Not always at 0 but my nitrates usually is less than 5ppm which is very good for fishes.

@@nitehawkpearl8304 I have a 54 Liter (about 14 gallons) aquarium and an Eheim Experience 150. The top basket is completly filled with Biohome.
But I want to remove all biomedia because I have planted tanks and it seems that too much biomedia can be counterproductive in planted tanks. It seems that not only Nitrite and maybe Nintrate will be reduced in the filter but also other nutrients for plants. I have to use much more fertilizer.
Biohome might be great for Malawi tanks or other tanks with just a few or no plants, but not good for planted tanks.
I removed all Biohome from 3 tanks without any Nitrite peek, so it doesn't seem that Biohome is necessary for nitrification at all

I love biohome ultimate and the original biohome plus, I've used both for years. You cannot tell bacteria where to grow, it just grows. Try to give the bacteria lots of options. Moving beds, static , low flow high flow ect...
I guess what I want to know is that if it would be a good idea OR recommend to put a fine filter mat under your media???
I packed approx. 9lbs of this in the 2 fx6 I have running on a 250 gallon and have never seen water more clear in almost 25 years I have in the hobby.

More useful information for our hobby, is that the range of microbes able to live underwater includes "Anammox" bacteria. These are still quite new in our history of understanding the nitrogen cycle. These valuable bacteria, bypass the whole traditional cycle, and convert ammonia directly to nitrogen gas. We would all love these guys working for us!!!
Thanks for the comment. Someone just posted an article regarding Anammox bacteria last week on my local aquarium club website, and I found their metabolic abilities scintillating. We have so much to learn in our hobby 👍🏼
I find the microbiology of aquariums extremely fascinating and the natural world more broadly. Trying to grow aquatic plants well, really stretches the boundaries of glass box fishkeeping.
Do you think that as the glass from the Biohome breaks down the particles will get into impeller and mess it up??? Rookie question, please forgive my ignorance and curiosity🤔😎

The reason why its no longer showing capillary action, is because the pores are filled with (hopefully) bacteria and their biofilms, and therefore this would be expected.

I am sure this stuff is great but its also insanely expensive. I use Lava rock with is around $1 per kilo and my discus tanks are perfect.
That is interesting to know, I have never had an external filter before and would have got biohome but apparently need 4kg of it for my 200L tank. 😬

I have the biohome ultimate media when i was keeping African cichlids. But switching to saltwater keeping and was wondering can i use the same biohome ultimate in a saltwater application instead buying the marine version biohome.

Greatwave engineering has it for $18.32 per kilo. That's less than $9.00 per lb. Shipping isn't bad at all in the states either. I ordered 3 kilos and after shipping was $65.00. Got a little bit over. Was 6lb 15oz when I weighed it with refrigerante scales. Not bad at all if you ask me.

Great stuff man, best media out there. I’ve been using this stuff for about a year on a fluval HoB and it’s just awesome. The only thing is those bacteria balls do not break down, I still have some stuff floating around.

Hmm issue i have is you can blow through it meaning gas can enter and leave also if oxygen cant get in the middle how does nitrogen get out ,,,having said that it is a good media for canisters ,,,,,pumice stone is just as good and half the price ,,seachem use it as matrix

So what do you think about this "ultimate" media now, 4 years later ?
I have been hesitant to try this media. Several independent scientific evaluations I have read have shown that this media clogs rather quickly and the water going through your filter essentially by-passes the media as a result, negating it's effectiveness in providing a large surface area for biological activity. What say you about these findings? I have remained with Poret foam since placing panels of this material in my sump forces the water through the foam (cannot bypass), and when it clogs it is easy to clean.
I would love to read the independent scientific evaluations you have found! Its cool that someone has actually taken the time and money to evaluate it properly.
Here is one by Dr. Kevin Novak. Try to grind through the science stuff, and wait for the conclusions. Putting aside the science the experienced aquarist knows that water flow will by-pass clogged media and that sintered media will clog.

I listened to the entire presentation, but my impression is that like anything we buy and place in our tanks; ceramic & sintered glass media should be recharged or altogether replaced to prolong their usage. Much like all mechanical & chemical media; eventually, even sponges and other biomedia need a thorough cleaning and/or repurchased. This hobby is always about selecting that which is best for YOUR particular needs....as with anything you purchase.

The amount u need to establish these bacteria is super high pond guru suggests 2 kilos for a medium stocked tank of only 100-150 litres
hello, u just clean it with tap water? any concern if the tap water contain chlorine?
Only for the initial setup, once mature it should only be cleaned with dechlorinated water or tank water or you will kill the bacteria thats there. To be honest i would have washed it in tank water off the bat. He could be using water from a well though so that would be OK.

What is your opinion on sponge filters?
Jamie Hall sponge filters are great. Especially for baby and small fish.
Brick chips has the same ( a bit slow) capillary effect .
And lots of unknown dissolved solids in unknown quantities. efflorescence is the white salts you see rise to the surface of bricks. It's best to avoid putting unknown water soluble solids in a tank.
You know what would be great, if someone were to prove that bacterial biofilm could actually grow inside these sintered glass media. Most fo the biofilms settle on the surface of these media.
Bio balls are for freshwater have to buy separate ones for saltwater. And as a general rule you should only replace part of your filter media at a time so you dont wipe out all your beneficial bacteria at once..
You should watch the Pondguru’s video from his pimp my filter series. Where he upgrades the FX6 giving more mechanical filtration in the ring of sponges freeing up the top tray for polishing pad and even more Biohome ultimate. Can you just wash it in tap water? Aren’t the chlorine and chemicals harmful to the beneficial bacteria?

I agree Parrott. I wouldn't rinse mine with chlorinated tap water either.
It would have been better to soak it in dirty filter water for a couple of hours so it cycled faster, but it was new media so it doesn't matter once he has a decent declor.

I use a mix of bio home and seachem matrix half and half works great for me, dont see a need to ever change it ive had cheap Chinese media last me 8+ years

@@lostmangos I've got a fluval 307 for my 55 gallon, i find its not quite enough for my over stocked malawi tank, so i run an internal along side, if i was to do it again i would get a 407 or fx4, but a bigger tank over 75 gallon id recommend an fx6 or the highest flow sun sun filter from all pond solutions
@@danstanford89 The thing that is confusing me is I have a small pond with 4 fancy goldys in it but want to bring them inside as I never get to see them. I was going to get the fluval 307 (£130) for a 200L tank for them. The pondguru video suggests when keeping messy fish like goldfish that 2kg biohome per 100L will be needed (4kg =£60+). The fluval 307 only has 3 trays I gather and the bottom 1 should be used for sponges so that just leaves 2 trays which each hold 1kg biohome. Is he saying I would need 2x 307s?!
@@lostmangos for 4 gold fish 2kg would be plenty i have 10 6" fish in my 200l, just 1 307 would be plenty if u could stretch to a 407 even better. He is talking about the full cycle which removes or majorly lowers the nitrates in the tank, i do 40-50% water changes a week so dont really have to worry

I don't think that this is the way to go. This stuff is seriously expensive, and it can take months before it starts to work, IF it starts to work.
This is a solution to a problem that has never been a problem.
Stuff your filter with cheap lava rock -> get lots of nitrate from aerobic cycle -> Plants consume nitrate -> end of problem.
Seachem matrix has 2x the surface area of biohome, also has a bigger anoxic (anaerobic) area than biohome, also has better flow, and is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper

Aquarium Adventures I'm a biochemist and have a 3 year degree in geology, the pumice from matrix is Scotia pumice and has 312,000 ft2/ft3 and matrix is 162,000ft2/ft3
I don’t quite understand why people don’t get how all these “new” media’s like biohome and marine pure etc are actually WORSE then Matrix... you put Matrix in a low flow zone and you will get exactly the same ( actually greater) effect on nitrates .... biohome ultimate is in fact NOT inert in a low ph freshwater tank either. I can kill nitrate easily... use a reactor, a deep bed, a planted refugium whatever... but what’s LESS work is just doing a water change. Turn a tap to drain... turn on the pump to refill ...
ErnieDoesThings I’m doing research on biohome before I purchase. I’m hearing all the pros about it but you need 1-2 kg. per 26 gallons according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. That’s 2-4 lbs per 26 gallons. That’s a lot you have to fit in a filter to be effective. How would you even fit almost a pound in a 5 gal filter? I’m leaning towards Matrix.

you reversed the mechanical filtration it should be like following: 1st coarse media 2nd medium and lastly fine media
The type, sequence, and placement of the mechanical media is all correct. Go review the flow in an FX6.

I was not offended and the video you are referencing is not a Fluval FX6, and thus you keep trying to reinforce your error. Please watch a video (my video for example) on how the water flows in an FX6. I will give you a hint! Not all filters flow the same way. I appreciate friendly advice, and now please take mine ;-)

When ya say better. Its not like it makes a huge difference night and day. Just marketing lol. I used to work for one of the largest company that makes those medias. Of course their is some engineering to it with more pores for beneficial bacteria but if its expensive its not worth it at all. Regular media with weekly water change is enough.
You didn't have to go through all that. If you would have used Seachem Stability for 7days, it would have cycled the new biohome.

You will NOT achieve anaerobic colonization in a canister filter... even if you fill it up entirely with biohome ultimate, it won't happen...you need to put the media in a very low flow area...a sump is good for this as you need the flow rate of the water to be 75gph or less...if your using a canister, buy lava rock or pumice and save your money.
Your comment is asinine especially prescribing a flow rate of 75ghp. What if I do 75 gph through a drinking straw? Will that suffice Mr. Microbiologist?
@@AquaticLogic Listen genius, you obviously don't know anything about anaerobic bacteria...show me one canister setup that has it growing inside then we can talk...having an anoxic zone is the EXACT opposite of what aerobic bacteria needs to live which means anoxygen rich enviornment. So how do you propose that bacteria that can't survive in an oxygen rich enviornment somehow grows inside a canister that's pushing oxygen rich water through it at almost 1000gph?? I won't hold my breath for an answer.
@@GSP-76 Your lost so I will help you find yourself again. The spatial organization of ammonia-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria is predicated on -=BIOFILMS=-. They form these to better control their environments. This BIOFILM can and does (given sufficient time) cause anaerobic conditions in the middle of the media. Then anaerobic bacteria set up shop . Its fundamental microbiology, which I learned in second year biology.

Your filter isn't reducing nitrates whatsoever. Pondguru's idea of achieving this in canisters is by simply loading the canisters up to the brim with Biohome Ultimate in the hopes that 6 months later the very innermost sticks create a tiny amount of anaerobic bacteria because they don't get hit with as much water as the media on the outside...it's a joke and pretty stupid ideology that simply doesn't work....good luck peddling the nonsense. You'll still be doing massive water changes until you get a sump that has separate sections that has very little flow. Even that is minimal after colonization unless your packing it with 20lbs of media which is buried under a substrate to further reduce flow. There's only about 1000 videos all over UA-cam explaining this but I'm sure you and your biology class knowledge has it all figured out.

1. Obligate/facultative aerobic bacteria colonize media.
2. In colonization they form biofilms like most bacteria on Earth
3. The biofilms clog the pores of the media, and create anerobic zones in the middle of the media through A) lack of water flow and B) metabolization of existing oxygen.
4. Facultative Anerobic bacteria move into the anaerobic niche...
This happens in ponds, rivers, lakes, streams, literally all natural aquatic ecosystems. This is basic biology/ecology.
Lol a moss ball would remove more nitrate than this. I'm a biochemist so I'm know my shit. This media has a 1-25 Anoxic to noxic ratio which means that if you have 40ppm of nitrate with no more input and you have biohome (cycled) it will take 48-52 hours to to lower by 3ppm. Which is good if you have no fish... fish(on average) will create triple that in the same time. People get confused because everyone thinks that anaerobic means no oxygen but it doesent, Anoxic means no oxygen, anaerobic means no oxidizers which means nitrate, nitrite, phosphates and pretty much 70% of organic chemicals found in water... biohome ultimate Is good but not worth it for the money, if you had a substrate of 4 inches(10cm) of you will get quadruple that of biohome which means th a if you have pa 4 inch fine substrate like sand you will get more nitrate removal then nitrate added and there for you don't need water changes(but it I still recomended)
Where are you deriving all your data? Anoxic to (sic) noxic ratios? Fish creating "triple that" (3ppm)? Quadruple the nitrate removal?
Aquatic Logic I'm a biochemist, I have some of this and I checked so 1 in every 25 millimeters squared is Anoxic so I did some tests with my equipment (from my work) and did these tests but I'm not saying biohome is bad its better than normal media
