      I am hoping to get a guy up here in early Spring who has made a very good pond filter system with a drum, moving bed and shower all integrated into a small filter. It looks incredible and should deliver a full cycle from a single filter so look out for that video.

      Pondguru i have a request if you create similar video on Aquarium products such canister filters, filter media, medicine etc including the Chinese products as well. Here in India Chinese products are ruling due to cost effectiveness. Now a days there are more fish keepers are coming up.

      It was a good show but there was nothing which really excited me as far as innovation goes - seems like the manufacturers just added LED lights and Wi-Fi to their products to get people buzzed but that stuff is just unnecessary. none of them were addressing the proper support of bacteria or had understanding of a full cycle which was very disappointing. They are happy to sell products which only get half a job done.

    looks interesting its good you work with the things you love.
    iv been thinking of getting into fish keeping,
    is their any british tiddler species that would be easy to keep?
    at first i wanted a perch but they can get big. i was thinking minnows or gudgeon but minnows really like a bit of flow.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Getting decent flow is easy with a good sized canister filter and extra flow could be added with a pump which sticks to the inside of the tank if necessary. Natives do need very clean water but as long as water is well treated by a filter they will be fine - just set the base of the tank out with plenty of hiding places like they would have in nature.
      Sticklebacks, minnows, bullhead and stone loaches would probably be the best for an aquarium. Depending on the size of the tank gudgeon could work too but they can get 6"+. I have some monster gudgeon in my pond.

    Great video Richard I would keep my filtration simple stay away from wi fi. Just a quick question my bio home media in my fx 6 is now 4 years old is there a need to replace it also happy holidays to you

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      No it should last for many years - assuming that the filter is big enough and plenty of media is used for the stocking scenario the nitrates should be low. When you notice them go up then the media could be clogged (assuming no chemical treatments have killed off bacteria) and that would be the time to replace or bake in a hot oven for 45-60 mins to sterilise it and give it a few more years of life - at that point it would need to cycle again.

    nice! lots of stuff im not sure i can get over here in the states ill have to look a few of these company's up, i would love to switch my fish room over to a predominantly insect/invert based food.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      That is the way it is going over here due to the EU limiting fish products in food but insect / invert based foods have to be better for the fish as that would be their natural diet.

    Ive just seen a video of a tank that was crystal clear, because he had 3 big canister filters running it. I would like to know if there is a jumbo filter out there, rather than buying multiple canister filters ?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому +1

      As far as I know the largest ones are the 1200 XL from Eheim or the classic 1500 from Eheim - I would go for the 1200 XL as it has trays. From memory it will hold approx. 10kg of biohome ultimate.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому +1

      I suppose so but if the tank was big enough to justify a pump fed pressure filter then a sump would probably be the way to go for indoor aquariums.

  • @trevorgray6993

    Hi Richard. I'm due to have a new pond (5500lts) installed shortly which will be stocked with goldfish/orfe. I am being advised to use a Hozelock Bioforce Revolution filter, which I think is the pressure washer you show in this video. Having watched other videos you have made I am concerned that the water is pumped through the bio media prior to passing through the foams and therefore presumably will be at risk of blocking the bio media. Should I be concerned about this ? I quite fancy using a Cloverleaf CL1 - would that be a better option ?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Those are two totally different filters there and the Cloverleaf one will allow you to set everything up properly for maximum results. Pressure filters are fine for keeping the water clear but won't necessarily keep it healthy. A pressure filter is too dirty inside to have good media in but the Cloverleaf could be filled with proper media toward the latter stages to be extremely effective. It takes up more space than the Hozelock but is a proper filter, not just a mechanical filter. If you're having a well planted pond then the Hozelock will be fine but for maximum water quality then the Cloverleaf will be way better.

    • @trevorgray6993
      @trevorgray6993 6 років тому

      Many thanks - the Cloverleaf it is then. I see that the CL1 comes with alfagrog as the final media, did I ought to replace that with pumice or am I being too picky maybe ? Either way please keep the videos coming , they are a fantastic resource and one of the few genuine ways amateurs like myself can gain that essential knowledge.

    I own Goldfish and what’s the bio media for Goldfish my friend ?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      You need to have decent filtration and the best media is the biohome ultimate (I'm assuming that you have a canister filter) - my last video on filtration explains how to size a filter and set it up properly.
      It's called 'Why your filter is too small and not cycled' and it is quite long but has lots of useful information in there.

  • @artashesharutyunyan3693
    @artashesharutyunyan3693 6 років тому

    BTW, how much are those small drum filters? Anything I saw in china is about 5000USD and they can process 20,000 liters/hour. That's like way too big for me. I need something like 3000L/H

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Even the smaller ones are £1500 - £2000 but a guy who has made an innovative filter will be bringing it up to my place in early Spring. It incorporates a drum, moving bed and shower filter in a modular system.

    hi ,you have probably been asked this question a million times ,im looking for a indoor aquarium 33ich high including the lid and lighting ,50 inch lenth ,13 inch wide , , including stand ie housing sump for filters , pump ,etc , suitable to keep 3 or 4 small fresh water carp in it , looking for a set up that will almost look after its self , can you supply such a tank ready to set up or do you know where i can get one , thanks ,les

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      It would have to be custom made and there aren't many good places doing the whole package. However there is one a few miles from me who do a great job although you may have to wait a while for the delivery due to their workload: www.acaquatics.co.uk/

    • @pondguru

      That sounds like a good plan as a larger custom tank can be very expensive to manufacture. Best of luck with that.

  • @Hulteke
    @Hulteke 6 років тому

    Hello @Pondguru! :) Ricard from Sweden here. I am curious about the filter showing in 13:38. Is it a profit clear sytem, or what do you say? Where do I find it? Ocean? I have aquatic monitor lizards and need filters that can manage a lot of modge! :D

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      It is a 'Proficlear' filter from Oase (German company) and is very expensive but its self cleaning and very well made. Problem is that is gives no consideration to the last part of the cycle so you end up with 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite but very high nitrates. If the outlet was then passed into a decent sized shower filter using good media that would help reduce nitrates.

    • @Hulteke
      @Hulteke 6 років тому

      Pondguru Hi and thank you for taking the time to answer in this holiday season. :) Is it possible to use a chamber from Oase and this model, to create this trickle filter? Or is it better to “think big” and use larger plastic boxes? I have one final question and also want to thank you for all time spent on recording, editing and share your knowledge. It helps and inspires! If you have a wife that think it is to much, send a warm hug from Sweden! Now my question. Do you have wholesale or retailer of biohome media outside uk or am I buying from you directly?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 років тому

      Generally a filter like the proficlear would be modular but it would only include the drum, moving bed modules and a pump chamber and it would be gravity fed. From there you would pump water to a shower filter which would complete the cycle.
      Yes, as far as I know we do now have a supplier in Sweden and there is a link at the top of every page on the FilterPro website to other suppliers (flags at top of page): www.zoosmart.se/sv/
      It may work out cheaper to buy from your own country but if not then I send all over the world no problem.
