    Sorry it took so long to get the video done for you Ben - hopefully people will find something of interest in the video and the other video(s) from what I sent you as I really hope people begin to understand that a full cycle (reduction in nitrate) can be achieved with the correct filtration (or a really natural tank set up and minimal stocking).
    It really is a simple process but there are still many people out there who are very vocal against the fact - I'm always interested to see what those fake channels come up with as their vitriol can be quite amusing.
    BTW my second name is Thew but I answer to anything, lol

      Are you sure?
      I use 1l of Seachem Matrix in my canister filter and my PH is very low.
      I had to put one little bag full of aragonite to help my PH stay above 6,8. Without aragonite it goes 6,5.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru 4 роки тому +5

      @@thomaswolsey2319 1 litre won't make much difference unless the tank is small and the better the grade of pumice the higher the pH. As 'matrix' is more dense and mixed with other rock it has less of a buffering effect on water than a good grade of pumice would. In the video I was talking about good grade of white pumice when I mentioned the pH - hope that makes sense. You'd have to use a nation of 'matrix' to move the pH in a decent sized tank.
      pH is normally set by other factors including substrate, bogwood etc. which depending on how the tank is set up will raise / lower to a base level.

    • @PaulC.494

      Pondguru what is the best media to keep PH high for livebearers, using crushed coral in the filter atm.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru 4 роки тому +3

      @@PaulC.494 Crushed coral, Aragonite or good quality white pumice as the main filter media will do the trick but the effect will be only be proportional to the amount used in relation to the volume of the tank. Bogwood can lower pH so a high pH tank wouldn't generally have bogwood, almond leaves, alder cones, peat based compounds etc.
      Choosing certain rocks as decor in the tank can raise the pH greatly too - spaghetti rock, tuffa rock, white ocean rock etc. all will raise pH - especially tuffa rock but it can be quite crumbly.

    Richard is 100% spot-on in terms of marketing strategies to set price among other things. I work in the marketing industry and deal with global clients who invest an exurbanite amount of money on their marketing campaigns/budgets to create customer perceptions that drive price and loyalty. Customer perception is a powerful thing, it could be as simple as raising the price point to create the illusion that you are getting a superior product when it may not always be the case.

    Love, Love, Love it! Sensible, humble and personable Ben combined with the ever engaging, informative, and equally sensible Richard. It's not quite Watson and Crick explaining DNA but for Fish Tubers, it's close. Seriously, I use a large amount of the biohome ultimate in a canister in a blackwater tank that is heavily stocked and I must say that it actually is efficacious as far as nitrate reduction. I was earlier skeptical and bought it based on the videos from the Aquarium Adventures guy in the UK (like his work). Over time, I've been won over.

    Been running two canisters with biohome for over a year and it’s works great but no full cycle. 85 gallon tank, 1 pet goldfish that my daughter won at a county fair ring toss game about 7 years ago. Common goldfish destined to die in a bag or end up a feeder fish but we saved her. I’ve only found one channel that legit showed a fully cycled aquarium. Half man half cichlid I believe it was. He had a massive plant system going but he did it! A couple months ago I set up an overflow siphon system with fresh water dripping into the tank at a rate of about 2-3 gallons a day and its done a great job at keeping nitrates down. Thanks for all you guys do to help us out here. Keep up the great work!

    Thank you very much for this video Ben. Of course the debate goes on with at least one person declaring he doesn’t know anyone that ever saw any real nitrate reduction from using Biohome Ultimate, which is not an unreasonable position to take without objective proof. In fact, with this thing going on for upwards of ten years, why is no one out there doing a proper test and documenting the result. Well lo and behold, I accidentally came across a youtuber who did just that over a period of 5 months. He shared the details of his research and actually constructed a beautiful graph with his findings. Of course I would expect any committed naysayer to maintain their point of view, regardless, but I encourage anyone with an open mind about this debate to take a look for themselves. It came from Aquarium Adventures and you want to locate the video that says “Biohome filter review - The results!. Sorry for my inability to paste the link - lack of digital capability. Probably, you could get him in an interview also Ben!

      “Aquarium Adventures” video on Biohome has plants in the aquarium. He admits plants can absorb nitrates. Then he completely ignores that fact when he comes to his conclusions. Duh! Biohome was tested over a period of one year and did not do any nitrate reduction. Do a Google search for “7.5. Denitrifying Media - The Science of Aquariums” to see the results.

    • @frankhoo-mook5039

      Thank you David. Isn’t this what we’ve all been searching for? Actual research that either proves or disproves claims from vendors. This report does indeed disprove the denitrifying claims unless someone else proves otherwise, so for me, at this time, I will not spend that extra money on this product. One final comment - the use of the word Duh! wasn’t really necessary. You didn’t need it to make your point. Let’s try to keep our debates on these “hot topic” subjects on a more polite level, shall we!

    I am still not convinced Biohume is the way to go. The wicking action versus other media is impressive but it comes with a big price tag. I would like to see a demonstration of the wicking action after 6 month or a year of use. Seems to be that by then all the little pores are filled in, the wicking action is then like other media, and the anerobic benefits go away. For skeptics like me could you make a wicking demonstration video with used media at 6 month and one year interval.

    hi, I'm a newbie here. I don't have a science degree but am trying really hard to understand all this but am struggling. my understanding from what I have read is that is aerobic bacteria that breaks down the ammonia into nitrates and then nitrates into nitrates. anaerobic bacteria converts nitrates into nitrogen gas but this is also achieved by water changes. hence I dont understand why you need bio media if you do regular water changes. Am I understanding this right or am I way off?

    • @codyaguon6767
      @codyaguon6767 4 роки тому

      Bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite and another type of bacteria convert nitrite into nitrate, from there a small part of the nitrate is converted into nitrogen gas but for most part we remove the nitrate via water changes other wise it will build up. The media is created for giving that bacteria a place to grow (same thing that gives live rock and sand its name) some of us hobbyist use Fowlr tanks or may have to many fish to surface area in the tank for enough bacteria to colonize there for we add more surface area by way of media

    Pretty unrelated, but I've got to get it out. In past videos you talked about your nitrate, and water changes. I told you I am 6 months, no changes. You said bad idea, in short. Well, it finally happened. My nitrates have not gone down even though I am giving less nitrogen to my plants(easy green). So for me, that's what a needed water change looks like. Plants doing great, 0 ammonia and nitrite. BUT, if the plants are not consuming the nitrogen, it could be from overfeeding due to trying to get food to my little piggies. The loaches. Also I'm starting in with some cyanobacteria, so that's a reason to get your hands wet.

    That's why you don't need expensive bio stuf if you have al fully planted tank and normal stock of vis.. but just wat hey said, no substrate at the bottem of your tank or to much fish you need bio substrate in a filter.. but if you have plants and fully planted you don't want nitrates lost whit bacteria, the plants need it to grow.. but the most problems is Fosfaat that trigger some algae if the No3 ratio to PO4 is out of balance like No3 20ppm and PO4 3mg is problems.. so even whit anaerobe bacteria you have to do a water change or use Zeoliet tot get rid of fosfate too. A Tank Its always a closed ecosystem that cannot self-support whitout human control or adjust.
    But Ponguru yes he knows that things but a good fishkeeper whit 40years of experience like me knows also the natural cheap media works almost the same.. like the old day in sumps full whit lavarock and it also reduces nitrates afther 4-8months running..its al oldskool trick nothing new.

During a problem with my electric wiring in the house , i couldnt use any of them and only used a battery powered circulation pump. Guess what. No issues with ammonia spikes because all my beneficial bacteria , in my tank , is in the substrate and decor.

    Ben, you should ask Richard if anaerobic bacteria can grow/thrive in a fast moving water environment. A.e the inside of a canister filter. Many say it can't, and anaerobic bacteria needs still water to thrive.

    • @GSP-76

      It can be done in a very low flow setup too...50gph or less.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru 4 роки тому +4

      That is answered in the other part(s) - I gave Ben close to 50 minutes of footage so he split it into multiple videos. Basically the flow is slowed down inside the media of it has a suitable structure to allow for that. Highly oxygenated water flowing over it will be deoxygenated by aerobic bacteria as the water makes its way down the tunnels and then anaerobic bacteria will form in the inner parts of the media. Therefore it doesn't matter if the water is fast flowing (e.g. shower filter or canister filter) as long as a suitable media is used. For less suitable media the flow will have to be slowed right down through the filter to result in deoxygenated water to allow the media to support any anaerobic bacteria but then return flow to the tank will be minimal so an additional pump / filter would be needed to keep the flow up.
      Plenty of people will tell you that flow needs to be below 50 US GPH but that comes from seachem recommending that flow rate for 'matrix'. That does not apply to better media - as long as enough suitable media is used it will support enough bacteria of aerobic and anaerobic to result in a full cycle.
      I thought I'd write that here in case Ben chopped that part out as I told him to edit the footage I sent him as he saw fit.

    Why would you ever want a full-cycle ? I thought plants need nitrate to grow ? So is it not better to try to limit the denitrification, by putting less biological media in the filter, in order to have a fast, oxygenated flow ? Or will a full-cycle anyway not be able to make rid of all the nitrate, only reducing the level of it until something of 5 ppm ?

    Sponges work far better at a fraction of the cost of biohome. Full cycle conversion of nitrates in a moderately or heavily stocked tank is a myth with any media. After years of experimentation with fellow biologists on all options available we have found that aquaponics snd water changes are the only two options that reduce nitrates.

      @@BenOchart it is incumbent upon Pond Guru, not me, to present peer reviewed science to justify Biohome's claims and outrageous cost. Biohome is very expensive, I have used it and it clogs There is no scientific hypothesis that can be put forth to justify nitrate reduction as claimed and likely why there is only "marketing hype" selling Biohome. Ask Pond Guru to post peer reviewed science please, he is the one taking his client's money. UA-cam user videos are just anecdotal stories IMHO. @@HalfManHalfCichlid I hear you John, but sponges certainly clog as well, right? And truth is, at least for me in running a couple kilos of biohome in the canisters under my 60gal, I've never seen a shift that would indicate that my media has changed in it's effectiveness. Every few months I pull the biohome out of the canisters, give it a few dips in tank water and put it back to work. When examining the media I feel no excessive mulm build-up on the surface of the media and it's still rock hard. That being said, I also run massive matten sponges from Swiss Tropicals in my sump, a trick that was partly inspired by watching the evolution of your sump. They work great but do require a good cleaning from time to time as differences in water levels on each side of the sponge indicate that they are starting to clog and block water flow.

    For the most part, the things Richard is talking about won't be attainable for African cichlid owners. Most African tanks are over stocked (rightfully so), don't have plants because they get torn up and regardless of the substrate, most African cichlids rearrange the substrate constantly. Filling canisters up with biohome ultimate may get you a tiny amount of nitrate reduction but for the most part you would never see any real benefits because water is moving too fast in the canister. A sump or media reactor is your best bet where you could create the conditions for anaerobic bacteria to cultivate.

    • @robd8873
      @robd8873 4 роки тому

      My thoughts too. An African cichlid tank is always going to need a different approach to the majority of tanks.

    • @GSP-76

      @@robd8873 Yup, having a cycled tank could mean a lot of different things got different types of setups. I actually have anaerobic bacteria living in my sump and media reactor but still have to do frequent water changes. I'm starting to think the best nitrate reduction method for heavily stocked African cichlid tanks would be to setup a sulfur reactor. A lot of people use it in the saltwater hobby but it works for freshwater as well. If you can get a sulfur reactor dialed in properly, you could reduce nitrates to 5-10ppm.
