Love that you can hear the acoustic sound of the electric guitar over the playback of the track as he records, one way to tell how cleanly and expertly he's playing.
Slipknot is one of those bands that is so fucking good but "real metal" fans sleep on because of the theatrics and their association with nu-metal. Mick and Jim are some of the best guitarists working today. Mick straight up one-takes this track like it's nothing.
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing other bands live but the gimmicks and theatrics are what really pulled me in with Slipknot when I was younger and to this day is one of the main things I look for in new bands that come out over the years.
Having technically demanding songs is always a pain in the ass to record, especially if you’re quadtracking. You gotta lay down 4 rhythm tracks that have to sound identical with minor differences in placement of fingers on the fretboard and strike-zone on the strings. Now imagine doing that for 11 songs that are about the same level of difficulty to track.
Joe Jane do they quad track? I thought they just doubled rhythms. I engineer/mix/master and produce bands and I've never seen a benefit to quad tracking. I'll have to give it another shot on my next session and see if it is worth it
@@jacobsmith1877 Not sure about quad tracking, but I'm aware that there are some places where they have 3 concurrent guitar tracks and they sample the third track while playing live. Not a sound guy though, and may not even be relevant to what you guys are talking about.

@@phoenixteargaming that's weird. They should've kept them tbh. Sevenfolda nightmare album has their old drummers work before the other drummer came in
@@logancabianca5432 yeah but theres a couple reasons for that. 1. For a7x, it was best friend that died in an OD incident so the drums were kept as,close to the original as they could to pay tribute. 2. Its way easier to get rid of some guitar solos on a song than drums.
I'm not a big Slipknot fan, but I will admit, Mick Thomson is one of the best modern rhythm guitar players in metal. I've seen people compare him with Synyster Gates, but Mick is miles ahead of Syn in the rhythm department.
TwoHeavyThrash Believe it or not, Mick writes a lot of the music for Slipknot, recently, he wrote almost all of the .5 The Gray Chapter album from what I have heard. He's duals with Jim Root as Lead/Rhythm. They share roles quite well. The chemistry between the two is excellent. (I also think he excels past Synyster Gates for sheer experience.)
zeromant80 I am glad you have enjoyed their work too. I hope they make another Iowa type album soon though, that album had some very nice guitar work, specifically their dropped A guitar riff work.
@@israelfranco1997 I have heard people who listen to pop, country, rap, or all of the above say that before. Apparently they think strumming the same 4 chords over and over again (country), having someone else play guitar for you without recognition (pop), or mumbling with computer made beats in the background means you're talented. I have heard people say metal doesn't take talent, they are just screaming, metal is depressing, or something along that line before many times.
I'm just getting into Slipknot, and as a guitarist, all I can say is WOW. Mick is *way* more talented than I thought! And riff at the beginning is fucking sic!

This band is quite literally the jackpot of musicianship, talent and supreme no compromise quality and work ethic. This whole band gives you your money's worth every time out.
He is amazing but what can't he play even one single time Psychosocial solo/Vermillion solo decently when it comes to live performances? All he does is using Wah with tones of pedal effects to the point that all you hear is noise.. And why is it that AHIG most technical songs are never played live? This Cold Black, Gematria, Butcher's Hook, Vendetta, All Hope is Gone.. Are they too difficult to play while headbanging or doing crazy shit live? I don't know, I love Slipknot but this are questions that I will never know the answers for, those songs kick much more asses than the ones of AHIG they always play.
Joel Dergal I admit, he's not great at solos. But you can't deny he is excellent at almost everything else. I heard that AHIG was written in small groups, so apparently thats why they don't play certain songs live. Also they weren't as popular as some of there other songs.
What I meant is that his solos in studio sound great, but he can't reproduce them live, I don't know why, and there are plenty of songs in AHIG that have excellent guitars, I'd say most of them, but they only play Sulfur, Dead Memories and Psychosocial (sorry if I forgot any but I've only seen them playing those live) and it's a shame they don't include all the other amazing and much more complex songs live. I hope they won't do the same with the next album.
Joel Dergal That doesn't necessarily mean they can't play them but they need to put songs they feel would fit into their set. They have a specific standard for their sets so they're going to add songs they feel add to that. Gemetria is a great song but can they get the same level of energy on stage while still executing the song effectively? Probably but they also might feel that Sulfur and Psychosocial can do it better. I mean who knows at the end of the day, but if i had to guess....

-T-X-M- All hope is gone is the only album where guitars play a big role. Slipknot's music is structured more around vocals and drums. Unlike thrash bands.
i guess you're right i never listened to slipknot too much back in the day i was too busy with death metal bands like tbdm, the faceless, and opeth name a few to really give this "industrial" type of stuff a listen.
ppnats Naw, I listened to them, and played music similar to this when I was much younger. It's hard to play and sing music, for me, like this at the same time. Sometimes I get kinda heavy, but it's mostly w my vocals. I'm sure if I had my old rig and pedals, I'd thrash every now and then. Regardless, I'd say Slipknot is the most balanced commercially successful modern metal/thrash band out there. They not only write stuff that's catchy to none metal listeners, but they add very technical aspects while blowing your face off. Who else screams(traditional metal) like Corey and sings that is in the same level of success as Slipknot?
He's never had a single lesson, yet he plays every song perfectly. And every guitar brands itself with the eponymous Seven, the same that Mick has tattooed on him. Yet nobody tattooed it on him, it magically appeared at the same time as the guitar Seven did.

As IF they'll ever play Gematria live

Having technically demanding songs is always a pain in the ass to record, especially if you’re quadtracking. You gotta lay down 4 rhythm tracks that have to sound identical with minor differences in placement of fingers on the fretboard and strike-zone on the strings. Now imagine doing that for 11 songs that are about the same level of difficulty to track.
Joe Jane do they quad track? I thought they just doubled rhythms. I engineer/mix/master and produce bands and I've never seen a benefit to quad tracking. I'll have to give it another shot on my next session and see if it is worth it
Not all their riffs are complicated most is simple. If we talking about exam every performance check out Dream Theater and Megadeth
@@jacobsmith1877 Not sure about quad tracking, but I'm aware that there are some places where they have 3 concurrent guitar tracks and they sample the third track while playing live. Not a sound guy though, and may not even be relevant to what you guys are talking about.

Blue Raven And both of them shared bass duties on the album, and the basslines are fucking great in this one (especially Killpop, one of my faves)
zeromant80 I am glad you have enjoyed their work too. I hope they make another Iowa type album soon though, that album had some very nice guitar work, specifically their dropped A guitar riff work.

Tons*
