he's so talented, and from a mere instructional video alone, you can tell he is a decent friendly man who enjoyed what he did. the world has lost a fantastic musician and a brilliant person.
as much as everyone criticized the way he plays bass and how easy it is it doesn't matter sometimes you don't need the most technical bass line to add to a song
Greg M - You don't play any instruments, correct? Ya man, this is very, very basic stuff. It is very easy. As in a lot of hard rock and metal, the bass just plays the root note of the chord that the rhythm guitar is playing. The reason a lot of people say that a lot of rock bass is easy (not all...but quite a bit of it is like this) is b/c of what I said about. Think, when a guitar player plays a chord, they are going play anywhere from 2 strings to all of the strings (we'll assume he is playing a 6 string). If it is a song where the bass is just going to mirror the rhythm guitar, as they just want to add some low end and thicken things up, the bass player is going to play exactly what the rhythm guitar is playing....but instead of playing the whole chord..he only has to play one note/string of that chord. He just plays the lowest note of each chord. hehhhe.. Sorry about the long and dumbed down explanation. But if you don't play any instruments and don't understand why people think Grey's playing is 'easy'..this is the best way to explain it to a non musician. ...think the bass in an rock song that you think "you can't hear the bass'. My explanation explains why. It is there...but it is just mirroring the R guitar with root notes on the bass. ...Listen to pretty much any Motley Crue song and you'll hang this..except for odd bass run/walk..etc... you dig?
Hey did anyone else notice at 6:12 Paul says "Jim does this weird octave kind of thing and I just kind of follow the roots of that". Get it? _Jim Root!_ Nice little name drop from Paul!
Regardless if you liked Slipknot, Paul, or his style of playing, a man, musician, and someone loved by many has died. He will be missed and his music will live on forever. Maggot Till I Die!! RIP from Texas.
I had this DVD when I was 16. I got a bass guitar and this DVD along with one from Fieldy for my birthday that year. Never learned anything. All these years later I'm finally learning to play bass. Decided to look up the tab to this. Remembered the DVD and thought "Who better to learn Duality from than Paul Gray".
would you believe i learned this with paul gray faster than tabs?damn good teacher..maybe that's why God took him to be His bass teacher.. RIP Paul Gray
we've lost alot of amazing musicians, Peter Steele, Ronnie James Dio and now Paul Gray it's sad day in the metal world! they may be gone but never forgotten!
Man , Paul was such a badass. Slipknot will never be the same without his input. He may not have been the greater player to live, but he was very smart when it came to music, he was a big part in the early music writing. Rest In Peace brother.
It was the first slipknot song that i learned to play!!!the song duality ment so much to me...it brought me trough a very hard time that i had to pass!! It breakes my heart that this genius died so early.... RIP
If he's alive today, he would play and teach bass and have a UA-cam channel, I will be a subscriber to his channel. I will miss this man, so talented. Even he's gone, I'm still his fan.
@jincsz Slipknot have said MANY times that Europe is like thier second home and the festivals in Europe are like NOTHING anywhere else in the world, they are incredible celebrations of music. I understand your point and it would have been a fitting tribute to have their first show back to be in Iowa but they're not traitors for not doing that. Maybe it's not even possible. Slipknot it a global band, not local band anymore. They're not just 'doing it for the money' just cos it's not in Iowa.
ok lefty's are rare especially bass players this man this legend inspired me to start playing bass (i'm also a lefty) this man is why i play the reason why i love music the reason why i love BASS!
what a great man, so sad that he won't be with us anymore.... the press conference yesterday was so sad.. the member could hardly talk without breaking into tears
I lol just no 34 inch scale bass drop D then a step and a half down thats sloppy strings. Ryan Martini uses a better bass Warwick thumb 4 and 5 string. as a metal bassist has a better tone. I respect the guy but hated his tone and how all that was usually done was follow guitar. Some section need either rest/ something different in conjunction with guitar or something on its own all together.
My favorite bass tone for metal would be Alex Webster's of Cannibal Corpse. Come to think of it Alex is a fingerstyle player. Paul's playing is not meant to cut through but to blend with everyone. Kinda surprised he hardly distorts his signal unlike Rex Brown (Pantera) and Justin Chancellor (Tool).
the reason that he plays 115's is actually really simple… for all of you haters, which is what i use on tunings from drop b which is what he is playing, not b standard… totally different tuning. so the bass plays like a bass in drop d, but dropped down. not in standard tuning feel like a 5 string. also why would you want an extra high string you never play, its doesn't make sense anyway, 110's are way to light, they flop around in these low tunings and hit the pickup. 115's are still a little too light for drop b tuning, but notice he uses bends. i believe thats why he uses that gauge. also, any one can play with their fingers… jesus. the reason he plays with a pick, if you were to solo the bass and drum stems you would notice that slipknots drum sound is very tight, and when you are playing in this low tuning a pick produces a sharper tighter sound, this is much better for low tuning in metal music. notice the click sound on the slipknot kick drum, and add that tight aggressive pick sound with the bass and bam, you sound awesome. now of course you can achieve this sound with your fingers, but it produces a slightly rounder sound. and if you've ever worked with a major studio producer doing a record with a major record company, which i have they always make you go with a pick, or at least strongly recommend it. i have been in 2 multi platinum bands and after extensive touring, and having the opportunity to play any basses i want this is my breakdown… i alternate between fingers and pick, sometimes on the same song. if the song is heavier i will use a pick especially if the guitarist are all doing down strokes with their picking. if its a ballad type song, ill use fingers. i use 4 fender basses for touring, 2 jazz and 2 p bass, both four string. i tune everything down half a step. one jazz and one p bass is tuned to drop b, NOT B STANDARD!, i have one gibson t bird, i hate it…it just looks cool, and i have to warwick corvette standard 5 strings, german made in nirvana black. they sound amazing. i don't play active pickups, passive only for me, and i use orange or mesa boogie amps depending on the project. and a massive amount of pedals, mostly distortions and fuzz, and a wah. for those of you who are beginners don't listen to any of these haters about he isn't a good bassist, he was a great bassist, and not only that….he has outsold every single person on here in record sales, so basically you can take your comments back to your day jobs and wish your awesome technique was put in a video on you tube. if any of you have any more questions, hit me up.
+clsalvaggio1 also you guys remember, there is no wrong way to play your instrument, do whatever you want. its like painting, its all about your art, whether its water color or oils, or both. nothing is wrong… as long as you like it. let it come from the heart… and remember the bass is in the rhythm section, and you should be holding down the fort, you don't need to be fancy, actually the simpler you play the better most times… runs or fancy playing for no reason is actually a sign of NOT being a professional. sometimes less is more, but if you have a cool break and its just bass and drums…do it up! Rock is NOT DEAD! keep at it. but i will say definitely spend equal time practicing with a pick and your fingers. and ill leave you with this, good job on choosing the bass, everyone plays guitar…a good bassist is one of the hardest things to find, this puts you a step up in the game!
Happy Birthday Paul Gray: Rest in Peace my inspiration: since I've learned bass, today I decided to learn this on bass and wear my mask memorial shirt.
After a deep listening on the demos (1995 S/T,mostly MFKR, Gold Disc aka "Crowz era") i came to the conclusion that Paul was a fucking master at bass, the bass lines on the song "Confessions" are fucking gorgeous (the opening is clearly inspired by AIC "Rotten Apple"), the bass on Do Nothing/Bitchslap, the best bass i could ever hear in my life, on Fur (1995 song) the opening riff is fantastic, to all who's reading this it's all personal, i wanna say that on my favorite bassists Paul is at the top. When Paul was still in slipknot i think he surely contributed to the slipknot sound we know, sadly in the following albums the bass was hard to hear and in Gently from Iowa i was used to hear the bass (from MFKR obv) but i nearly heard it, i don't get this. And last, not to say Alex sucks (so far he hasn't surprised me) but Paul was the best at it. (ik it's edited nothing changed except this)
Wait, why does it say R.I.P Paul Gray in the discription if Paul died in 2010 and this video was posted in 2009? We got some time travellers up in here
Cohort & Thing or he didn't pass away from drugs by accident, rather it be on purpose by someone who made the crime look like an accident, and that be why it says R.I.P. Paul Gray.
Please someone tell me why Paul Gray is so much loved and inspiring. Just to be honest, I've never considered him one of the greatest bassists neither in metal nor in music in general. I'm not starting a war so please just tell me the reason(s) why I should change my mind. I don't hate him so don't insult me and don't bother me with fanboys theories
+Maki Ka Tzee The love he gets is from being a part and creative force of such awesome band and being a cool dude along with giving kickass live performances for all these years. As for playing, Slipknot is probably one of the best examples how less is more. Take a look at their early work, Self-titled and Iowa. easy to play, nothing advanced and stuff and look how much love they got for it. I'd say he's more likely to be one of the most awesome, instead of the greatest, even if he was the most skilled player it wouldn't be neccessary to use them mad skills since Slipknot songs aren't too complex in terms of instrumentals ;) (most of them at least), and simply don't need anything different than he played.
+Maynz +Phil Trashb#1 Finally I got some good reasons, thank you. But I have to be honest I still can't find anything so amazing in him. I'm a "less is more" fan too, I enjoy minimalistic music, but I really hate bass line that follow exactly what guitars do. For example Martin Mendez from Opeth is a really good bass player, not only because of his technique, but because of his lines that fly all around the songs indipendently from the guitars. Listen to The Leper Affinity bass track and you'll understand what I mean
Sure, I understand perfectly. I prefer the same way of putting a bass track into songs. However, As long as I don't find anything 'greatest' in following guitar patterns too, I find Slipknot songs awesome and that is sufficient for me to like him.
I don't know why but his bass sound weird/different to me compared to the other basses he's played. Nevertheless, great lesson and most importantly R.I.P. Paul
Different pickups, preamps, and woods compared to the others. I don't know much about his warwick Corvette, but I know there's a BIG difference in tonality between the two.
To me his one of the best cuz the way he played and wrote the songs. For bass he did what bass should do . He never took the credits. And he plays like this cuz it fits slipknots music. If you want to see his top potential listen to their mfkr album.
There’s always someone better then someone else. Get over it dude. Nobody really cares. He’s Paul gray from Slipknot. Not Matthew from Mudvayne. We came and watched this video cause were fans of Slipknot, Therefore fans of Paul. Not to mention PAUL wrote a Massive amount of Slipknot’s music.
Sam Allan But he was good lyricist and songwriter. Majority of Slipknot's best songs have more influence from Paul rather than outstanding instrumental accompaniment. In my opinion Paul helped create Slipknots sound even without playing anything but intermediate bass lines.
kid, you just don't know what mean "bassist" . calling him "greatest bassist of all time" is like calling someone a masterchef because he can boil water for coffee
Yes he played a lot of low notes, he also played a shit load of high notes like the song wait and bleed he plays both high and low notes but anyways I still consider that he was the best bassist when was alive..
i got a bass guitar yesterdey. this is the first song i am trying to learn. Paul was such an awesome player i don't know why people go anywhere else to learn an awesome song R.I.P Paul, we are all going to miss you and i shall always be a maggot
+sandsnakesinmypants i know this is an old comment but it could be those strings. i lnow when i had those gauge of strings on my bass and tuned that low, the strings would be really floppy. so i bought a 5 string set, got it set up in drop c#. when i tune down to be it doesnt have thay sloppy sound anymore.
+joe Costello that is the most ridiculous comment I've ever heard. i am a bass master, and i can shred on guitar too.. and guitar is a weak instrument. I've played stadiums, and when a guitar goes out…no one notices..you loose the bass and everyone notices…the bass is the girth of the sound…it shakes the planet. thats why i chose bass… go listen to a tool record and then reply.
Late to the party I know but loving this best, better, greatest debate. Regardless of whatever, Paul was the best at being Paul, there was none better at that, and for Slipknot that was good enough. RIP bud.
Paul isnt really dead you know... not aslong as theres videos like this... not aslong as he's in your hearts, someone who leaves a legacy like Paul did... will never die we fucking love you Paul!
I can't help but smile while looking at him, he just seems so nice and all, wish I could have met him!

I love you Paul
I think he's smiling cause he's playing an easy riff.
But the dvd needs him to play it slow.
He seemed like such a nice guy and explained this really simply. Great bass player. R.I.P
as much as everyone criticized the way he plays bass and how easy it is it doesn't matter sometimes you don't need the most technical bass line to add to a song
james mann doesn't look easy to me
Too true, in this band the bass is there to underpin everything...... you'd sure as hell notice if you took it out!
Greg M - You don't play any instruments, correct? Ya man, this is very, very basic stuff. It is very easy. the reason that he plays 115's is actually really simple… for all of you haters, which is what i use on tunings from drop b which is what he is playing, not b standard… totally different tuning. so the bass plays like a bass in drop d, but dropped down. not in standard tuning feel like a 5 string. also why would you want an extra high string you never play, its doesn't make sense anyway, 110's are way to light, they flop around in these low tunings and hit the pickup.

2021 cause i still love paul
I don't know why but his bass sound weird/different to me compared to the other basses he's played. Nevertheless, great lesson and most importantly R.I.P. Paul
Different pickups, preamps, and woods compared to the others. I don't know much about his warwick Corvette, but I know there's a BIG difference in tonality between the two.
Rest in Peace Paul, you're in a better place, and among musician greats like Dimebag, Cliffy B., and Dio.
Lots of respect for this guy but if you think he is an "amazing" bass player you should listen more to Mudvayne.
John Power He’s still amazing.
If you think that's a good bassist you should listen to more Cliff Burton.
He is amazing, plus, I love Mudvayne.
RIP Paul. I have heard in person you were a great friend to people You are in heaven dude. God Speed Paul.
He's no doubt a really good bassist, but I don't think he was the best.
Sam Allan But he was good lyricist and songwriter. Majority of Slipknot's best songs have more influence from Paul rather than outstanding instrumental accompaniment. In my opinion Paul helped create Slipknots sound even without playing anything but intermediate bass lines.
+Dan Bellchambers Yeah I agree. sometimes less is more.
Sam Allan he's a great musician nonetheless
He didn't claim to be, I think he said he didn't even know how to play when he was asked about the Slipknot
Dan Bellchambers not intermediate when I just started bass I was able to learn it in a day
RIP paul from germany. the world wont be the same without you.
2019??
RIP Paul, probably the best nu metal bassist ever! A great musical mastermind!
Probably the greatest bassist of all time
I truly hope you are kidding.
kid, you just don't know what mean "bassist" . calling him "greatest bassist of all time" is like calling someone a masterchef because he can boil water for coffee
man,are you dumb or something.you such a moron! and who is the best guitarist in the world? Tome De Longe? or Stephen Carpenter?
hahahahaha. you should be a comedian. what else? mick thompson is the greatest guitarist ever XD?
Wow people are bashing on him because it's his opinion...
R.I.P Paul , thanks for everything , We will never forget you .from France
no disrespect to him, and his life; but does anyone really need an instructional vid on how to play these easy bass lines?
Beginner bassists, people with a bad ear for bass, people who just wanna make sure the way they're playing it is accurate
Well 700 thousand people including your dumb ass clicked to watch this video. lol
I started bass 2 months ago and I can't really catch the notes only from listening to the song.
I can't do the surfacing riff
+Kim Cornell You guys need to use tabs, then
I love Paul Gray my biggest inspiration in playing bass. And that tone is filthy.
Did he ever do anything other than strumming ridiculously easy lines on the lowest string?
Listen to their song "Confessions".
+Jesus Christ Thanks, that answers my question perfectly.
TheSparrowKnight The bass line on that song is fucking awesome.
+Jesus Christ I see that now. He had more talent than I though. RIP.
Yes he played a lot of low notes, he also played a shit load of high notes like the song wait and bleed he plays both high and low notes but anyways I still consider that he was the best bassist when was alive..
i got a bass guitar yesterdey. this is the first song i am trying to learn. Paul was such an awesome player i don't know why people go anywhere else to learn an awesome song
R.I.P Paul, we are all going to miss you and i shall always be a maggot
His bass sounds really shitty...the amp heads are funny or something. Lots of buzz, no low resonance...that's a bummer.
probably just bad quality video. helpful, but poor quality
Tourima it's supposed to is kind of a distortion thing that makes Slipknot's bass lines so good in my opinion
Walter yes I noticed some strings sound good tuned down
And I think he’s a strings are done
man, i really wish we could have heard him more in the band
Jeez, what bass tone... His tone is SOO fat. Maybe that's why Slipknot's newest album sucks. It doesn't have this powerful ass bass tone.
This guy passed away
you know Paul passed away right
maybe what hes saying is it doesn't sound as good without pauls tone in the new album?
Maybe you can take your opinion and shove it back up yours
Show some respect
R.I.P PAUL GRAY still cant believe this man...gone but never forgotten
666
R.I.P. from the Netherlands =(
Loved your music =(
Bass is without a doubt the easiest instrument to master in a band. If you want the easiest way to get into a band, learn bass.
That's the biggest bullshit I've ever heard. A guitar riff makes the song good. Bass eh.......
+joe Costello actually if you listen to any guitar riff without a bass behind it, it sounds weak as fuck
You're a fucking idiot
+joe Costello Fuck off man. I play both, and they suck without each other
paul was truly a master of the four string thing rock on and rest in piece
Late to the party I know but loving this best, better, greatest debate. Regardless of whatever, Paul was the best at being Paul, there was none better at that, and for Slipknot that was good enough. RIP bud.
Awesome he's just the nicest guy to be around God bless you Paul R.I.P.😇🙏
thanks for the music you gave us!
maggot for life!
R.I.P
stay [sic]
I love and miss you, Paul. You’re always with me
R.I.P Paul Gray. You might be in heaven but your music is always in here to enjoy.
Paul isnt really dead you know... not aslong as theres videos like this... not aslong as he's in your hearts, someone who leaves a legacy like Paul did... will never die
we fucking love you Paul!
we never forget paul
Rest In Peace !
R.i.p Paul you are greatly missed 😢
R.I.P #2!! The 9 wont be the same without you man.
the reason i play bass and love music !!! rip you changed my life 3
He makes it so easy to learn and understand.
R.I.P. Paul Grey from Indonesia, you have a lot of fan here
was the greatest bassist in the world and will never be forgotten
May not be a fan of Slipknot, but Paul Gray is one hell of a bassist. RIP
12 years today. RIP my dude...
RIP PAUL GRAY..YOU ARE MISSED...SLIPKNOT WILL NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT YOU MAN
