Average? He’s pretty dope for someone that basically had spinal meningitis. She raised the bar for metal coming out during 1998 - 2007. Not too many METAL drummers like him. I didn’t say death metal, or nu metal, or any other of the ridiculous sub categories. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Suicidal….even early Slayer…them guys have nothing on Joey. Not here to argue at all, I love so many different types of music. But if you disagree, fill me in, maybe there are some dope ass drummers that I haven’t heard of. And I love being put on to some new metal!
He wasn't perhaps the most technical drummer or the fastest "toxic slipknot fans will attack me for that". But he suited slipknot perfectly and inspired a shit tonne of kids to take up drummer. Rest in peace mate.

This is why I love Joey, Vendetta, Dead Memories and especially his Scar the Martyr work - it's all about the feel and character. All the drummers I like have a distinct signature feel and sound to them. It's not about how fast you are or how complicated your parts are. First few seconds of this clip are a prime example of that.
On July 27 I woke up, turned on the cell phone, opened UA-cam after a while and this video was recommended to me, I saw it. That same day I went to sleep and they knew that one of the musicians I most appreciated had died. It makes me feel sad
I listened to the whole self-titled album on the night of the 26th, got the news the next day on my birthday. Not a bad birthday, but I was deeply saddened by his passing.
I watched this video all the time as a kid and Vendetta became one of my favorite songs because of Joey’s drumming. Slipknot is the most influential bands in my life and Joey is one of the most influential musicians. Rest in power to an absolute legend.
Haven't been exposed to many drummers outside of the mainstream, have you? I only ask because I once though Joey was the best ever. A drum god. But once I was introduced to more underground bands, I realized very fast just how "meh" he actually is. I love the guy. He was a major inspiration to me when I started drumming. But he's not even in the same league as thousands of other drummers.

Speed is nothing more than an asset. His playing goes significantly deeper than what you’re thinking. If you judge every drummer purely based on speed and chops, then you’re missing the point. There is a reason people love his playing, there is a reason he’s considered a legend.

Joey's playing is truly something else. Usually drummers that play so relaxed and calm bother me, but somehow it always feels like he is giving it all and it always sound so powerful. He was just extremely calm in his art, and thats amazing.

He was the reason I started playing drums.I remember buying that Slipknot record back in like 98 or 99.After they played Ozzfest on the side stage.I missed their performace because they were on so early.I went and bought the CD the day after and was blown away.I couldn't believe how awesome his drumming was.Motivated me to start playing drums and I've been playing ever since.

I have listenned to many drummers, and no way joey is definitly one of the best drummer (technically and musically). Maybe he uses too much blast and double kicks but he's got a bloody sense of music.
I agree there are many drummers who are better than joey in every aspect of his drumming like the blast beats, double bass. But just like Lars inspired a generation of rock drummers joey inspired a generation of metal drummers to play fast like him eventually surpassing him in the end
