I just started learning disc golf at age 57. Your videos are entertaining and you seem to really care about helping beginners like me. Your advice is realistic and I am trying to implement a lot of your tips and tricks. Thanks for being there for us little guys!
This man is spitting straight facts! Putter rounds are awesome! I’ve found that on some courses where I play a putter only round, I end up shooting a very similar score. I second everything Robbie has said!
In my second year at 59 years old to spend quality time with my son who helped me get started, your videos have been a great addition to my game progress. I would love to see some tips on throwing up hill shots, this part of my game is a struggle.
Robbie I’m a +5 to +15 player and have sort of been stuck doing the same things over and over expecting different results. I recently watched your video on mindset/thought process when you played the three holes. Well I took that to the course yesterday and it was amazing. It’s was a hard course (center city in Pearl, MS) and I started off good. I parred the first four holes but on hole 5 I hit a tree right off the box. I did not follow your philosophy of seeing the gap instead of the tree (I did realize my mistake after the throw) I ended up double bogeying hole 5. Well instead of getting down I just thought of the positives on that hole and stepped up to the next tee box with a clean slate (I’ve always been bad about trying to make up strokes on the next hole) I have always thrown flat but instead on this day I put just a tad of hyzer on all my shots. Well on the 6th hole I did my normal routine but with a clear mind from the previous hole (I wasn’t thinking I gotta make up for the last hole) I threw my Champion TL and it was a perfect dead center Ace. My first ace ever. Thank you. My next step is learning how to stay focused because my round went to crap after the Ace but I didn’t care. I got an Ace!
@7:55 yes similar to an original frisbee - was using a very light 108g dollar store 'wham-o' frisbee on my first week of playing disc golf and was playing well rounded games with guys who had a backpack full of discs and stated to me they have been playing for years . And now today - I had lost both my driver and mid range in the river due to low hanging stick branch rebounds (and obvious bad trajectory) so I was forced just to practice with the putter..and I was out distancing the midrange disc I had easily. It also flies extremely straight but I do have a bit of a wobble issue at lower speeds with overhand throw due to the larger lip on the putter - people who give up.. it's in every interest group, some people are very hard on themselves. I enter every interest first for the challenge to me personally and the fun that comes along with that challenge regardless if I totally eat mud at it. thanks for your time and efforts my friend - peace from South Ontario Canada.
I spent two weeks playing putter only rounds to help my form. No lie I went from only from throwing max 220-230 to now consistently throwing 300+. It feels so good. Also like Robbie said I never left the course feeling discouraged knowing these were learning days. But I did leave a few days feeling on top of the world
Solid advice. Everyone told me to only throw putters starting out and naturally I shut that idea down immediately. However, now I'm rebuilding my BH and have been using just putters for field work and rounds. It has definitely made field work a better learning experience and really hasn't been as much of an annoyance in rounds aside from a few long holes. Local course has a tough wooded Par 4 for Hole 18 and first birdie on it came from 3 throws of the Reko. Really does feel great.
How are you doing this? You just seem to put out a video that relates to me and where my game is. I forced myself to throw only putters yesterday in field work because I was so frustrated with my midrange game. What do you do when you throw a putter at distance? Personally I slow down and I don't put a lot of power into a putter. Well I threw 250ft at "warmup" speed. I was shocked. How was I going slow and still throwing a putter that far? Throwing a putter teaches you so much. Great video. You are the man!
@@JimJohnMarks This is so true, but it seems no matter how many times we prove this to ourselves, it still is so tempting to rip one out there. I have been playing DG for less than a year so getting the right technique is still something I'm working on constantly. I found that throwing a putter only for a day at half speed has helped my form more than pretty much anything else I have done.
Want to add to this, this is a great way to see flaws in your overall game. I have been doing this for years. I do a forehand round as well. also want to add, don't use putters like Avaiar X putters cause they are stable and still will mask flaws. something straight flying. thanks for the vids dude
@@noahroberts8296 Facts. The moment I decided I needed a great FH to compliment my game I started play putter only rounds with my putting putters and forehand only. It was painful but now I can flick literally any disc with no wobble. I'm not a pro so I miss my lines a little more than I like, but it was a huge lift to my game knowing that when I line up for a forehand a bad release isnt something I even consider anymore, specifically not being able to get enough spin on the disc
I'm newish... been playing for prob 3 years, but very unconsistantly. I can't x step and my disc goes 200ft on a good day. I have done a putter only round on a local course where the holes are all under 300ft. You are right. Putter rounds really help. I played the course again and I saw improvement. No so much in distance, but in up shots/ shaping shots. Great tip! I often use discs that hide my flaws and without them I was forced to work on them.
I try to do a putter only or a putter/midrange round once per week. I actually enjoy them more than ANY other type of endeavor aimed at improving my game. Until now I was a little suspect that it would actually help and that perhaps, there was too much joy in my life. But you have convinced me of what I already wanted to believe. So I will continue with the putter rounds and give up sweets.
Did a putter only round, then took some time to practice driving putters, and it was awesome! It reveals a lot in your game, and it’s a fun way to attack each hole.
Great advice! I use my putter for most up shots and for drives up to about 160'. I love my putter. Caveat, I'm fairly new and don't throw very far to begin with. Thanks for another great video!
Playing rounds with only mids, except putters for actual putts, really helps. I struggled for a while being stuck in the “can drive/throw putters far enough and drive well with drivers, but never uses actual mids” mindset. Learning to throw mids consistently and adding distance with them was wonderful!
@@gcoffey223 it was just a nice change of pace that exposed a flaw in my game. Even if somebody like me goes back to their old ways, it’s still nice to at least know that they can rely on mids when they need to.
@@danielpenrodii2389 Changed my whole game. I still need work but I'm off to a rapid start. Yes, when all else fails, I know my mids and putters will get me a par (mostly)
Awesome video Robbie, I'll need to swing by the shop again and replace some lost heroes. Still rocking the basket I got from you back in '18 at your old store(still grabs discs like fly paper).
Amen to all of this! About 3 months ago I made the commitment to do all my practice with nothing but putters. Nothing has shot my game up faster than this! (It will even change you perspective of some holes).
Gonna try this soon. It's fun to play with less discs in general. Played a roc3 only challenge with by muddy at our local course, and we had a blast with that. Putter only sounds great too.
Just played my first putter only 9! It was on the back nine of a glow round last night. It was just a hassle on the front 9 with multiple glow discs. I took my trusty 2020 wysoki pig and had a blast with it. backhands forehands thumbers and even a grenade which hurt like hell. i thought of you when i decided to only carry the one disc. Great advice I will do it again for sure.
Really taking this video to heart. My form could use a lot of work, especially my backhand since I tend to favor the forehand, and this would probably help a ton. Will even send this video to one of my friends since they're having a really hard time with their throws. Thanks for all your content
This is truly a great advice and one I say to newer players as well. I often recommend them to buy the Innova Nova and learn to throw it without wobble. After that every other putter should come clean off the hand without any wobbling. Nova(or a similar truly neutral disc) also helps to learn angle control since the disc pretty much goes where you throw it in the angle you threw it in.
What grip do you use to drive with on these "putter only" rounds? I'm a power grip user on my drivers. Should do the same on my putters on these "putter only" rounds?
First comment! 💪🏽💪🏽 I love putter rounds. It’s fantastic for angle control and you honestly learn that you can get way more miles out of your putters than what you probably thought.
@@JimJohnMarks I agree, good advice. I hope you master that difficult one soon :) I still have some ways to go still. Maybe in this season I can shoot under +20. Just gotta wrestle that beast.
Great video! My overall game is pretty good... only thing missing is distance. I topped out around 250’ and never been able to throw any further than that. Not sure why I plateau there for 25+ years.
My putting is alright, and I can drive a putter decently. My biggest problem is that I'm so forehand dominant that I have trouble with backhand drives 🤷. My upshots are dialed in though.
I do this a the time with mids and putters. I play my whole bag on first shot and do a one disc (putter or midrange) until I get to the circle. Then I use my putting putters. At first I thought my putters or mids would get crushed by my bag but it always turns out my mids/putters usually end up within a stroke or 3 from my bag. My mids/putters didn't lose that much distance to my drivers either. Great way to squeeze 36 holes in one round
Any tips on gaining distance with less mobility? Specifically form changes. I used to throw relatively far. Never thrown specifically max distance shot to test it out but I've thrown golf shots 400+ both BH and FH with 4x PM star destroyers. Recently I've been having health issues (nothing too serious) and I can barely get my flippy tresspass to S out and push to lower 300s on a max pull. I dont see my health getting better in the near future and I love the game too much to walk away, but I just simply dont have as much fun playing now. Any tips to help me play a little longer and squeeze out some more distance?
Hey Robbie. Do you answer emails? I reached out over a week ago about the Birdie Fam, etc. and didn't hear back from you. Maybe I ended up in your SPAM or junk folder. I sent the email to your gmail account on 5/11.
Great advice. I’ll take out 1 under stable and 1 over stable putters out on my next run through my local course and see what happens. Oh, yeah and you funny. Thanks for the vid homie
Already helped me play better disc golf rounds...... I guess my next step is putter only, Thanks Robbie! Edit... I bag three KC Pro Pigs. I'm going to play a Pig only round. Never thought to play my most trusted disc every shot. Makes sense.
I cant agree more that throwing a putter round takes away some expectations. You know they aren't supposed to go far. Maybe after the putter round, play a reverse to midrange round. Thats where the drive is with a putter and incorporate a midrange for the lay up. Try with Udisc off. Take away the expectations of score and explore the capabilities with these slower discs.
New to the channel, only took me a couple of videos to subscribe. These are good player....good tips for the people like me who are pretty good but no where near pro tour. Keep on keeping on or as my favorite Muppet used to say...."Aint nothing to it but to do it" ~ Floyd Pepper
Yo Robbie! I love this idea and will definitely be playing a putter only round next time I go out to my local course. I would love to hear what your ideal putter is for a putter only round, or do you use more than one? If so maybe a follow up video with what you typically take with you on a putter only round would be nice!
Robbie, I’m 56 and just purchased a starter disc set. Haven’t thrown yet. So my question is, as someone brand new, and I mean new, to the sport what’s the best way to begin.
A buddy of mine I play with who is significantly better than I am told me to break down my up shots into two categories. Shorter secondary drives, and long primary puts.
Love your stuff Robbie. I quote you all the time on the course. For the sake of implementing this... what would you consider is a putter? 3 speeds and down?
I recently crushed my lat. pure and my brother was shocked it went 200 feet. Love throwing putters. Still working on a good grip to get it to not fly nose up. Any tips. Or older video with info?
Quite an interesting concept. Does a putter only round mean a single putter, or only one type of putter (e.g., several Pigs), or a variety of putters (e.g., a Pig, a Ringer, and a Swan)?
yo robbie c, i have been playing disc golf now for about 5 months and want to know a good practice routine to consistently and efficiently get better if you have any tips on that. i have a disc catcher and a backyard so ive been doing 20 foot putts and upshot around trees and things like that but i dont know if theres anything else i could work on that could translate to the course
Does a putter only round mean that I can use different types of putters or should I stick to using one neutral putter? Would it be cheating to use something like a Luna or PA-1 on some drives or should I be using my one putter and trying to use angles better? I'm learning the game and I'll do whatever I can to improve, so I'm excited to try this tomorrow.
Putter throwing helps out alot! The only problem with putters is you actually have to throw them high and nose up to get glide and distance from putters. This can start making bad habits when throwing fairways/drivers. It's actually why alot of new players can't throw drivers much farther than mid ranges is from throwing nose up, even slightly.
Most of the time when I play putter only I usually do better than bringing my whole bag out but destroyer time is more fun especially when you have to look for it for half an hour.
I can throw putters up to 250ft. I can throw 12-speed discs under 250ft. That's why i don't throw fast drivers. I have some drivers in my bag for special throws that need a strong fade or smth like that, but otherwise my main to-go discs are mostly either mid-range or fairway drivers. I have gone into throwing more putters once again as i bought myself 5 new putters for putting. Now my old putters are my throwing putters.
I just parked all my 9 speed distance drivers after a month and a half of playing, and got a few fairways. It is really surprising how few people tell you NOT to throw those if you're new. It's pretty telling when I can't even make a pro leopard flip right, which is a 6,5,-2,1, that I had no business throwing 9s. I thought that was reasonable when I was told, "you're not ready for a corvette 14 speed." I wish I'd seen this video earlier on and I hope others do. LISTEN when they tell you speed does not equal far.
I see Disc golf, Catan, Funko Pops, and heard “won’t go to the doctor when sick”...My kind of guy! Especially the “anything over 280 ft and there goes my birdie chance” 🤣
i was that guy, round after round was total trash. i finally bought a basket and picked a putter mold (kc aviar). i bought 4 identical weight/color aviars and practiced 30min a day for a month. totally turned my game around. it was that easy, shame i didnt do this 15 years ago smh
Confidence..... the thing i have 0% of. Man you called me out too. Had a bad past week and tried to actually sell my discs to my friends that ive gotten into the game. But im still out here trying.
I'm slapping 200-250 holes with my Judge and Buzz on normal days. Once in a while though I can't even hit that distance with my 10 speeds. Wtf, dang you frisbee golf gods!
@@RobbieCDiscgolf Ah dang, I generally hate Facebook. Was hoping it was discord. Still pondering tho. Been back playing DG for a month now and really looking to improve my game. It started as a way to get out of the house and lose some weight and now I'm playing 3-4 times a week. But really need halp lol.
I am just getting going and loving the game. I have been consistently playing better, but yesterday, I played terribly. All my throws were terrible, I missed puts, and I lost my favorite disc. How can I move on and get my confidence back? (I am being a little over dramatic; I will probably play again this weekend and be fine)
Honestly the key is getting back out there!! We all have bad rounds, but the trick is to just keep moving forward because great rounds await. Hardest part of a bad round is deciding the play the next one!
@@RobbieCDiscgolf Thanks, bro. I just got back from home course at Suwanee Creek Park and shot -2. I am satisfied because my putting game was on. Thanks for the great videos and encouragement!
I have my first tournament later this year at a course I've never played. Do you think going putter only for round 1 would be a good idea, if only to get a feel for the course and reduce OBs on the first round?
No. Play conservative for sure but of you have a 500 ft hole with a wide open fairway... throwing 200 with you putter leaves you a 300ft upshot. That imperfect driver technique will get you to 300 with a 200 ft upshot.
@@JimJohnMarks Thanks, good advice. I probably won't get to visit the course in advance, but it's a very relaxed event and I'll be going with super-low expectations. It's entirely for fun, and if I don't finish at the bottom - happy days. And while I'm ok with playing a range of shots with a mix of discs on my home course, I'll take your advice and that of JeckllendHyde about playing safe. But maybe cut loose on Sunday afternoon...
Robbie C is my disc golf doctor....
I got a fever, and the only cure is more putter rounds.

Robbie, come on over to the east side of Atlanta for our Sunday Putter dubs. 3 putter limit. Walton Disc Golf Club on fb. C-ya at GW on Wednesday.
Just got some new putt & approach discs and gonna try a round with only them.
Love your good vibes man!
Keep on keeping on or as my favorite Muppet used to say...."Aint nothing to it but to do it" ~ Floyd Pepper
shout out to "settlers of catan"
Yo Robbie! I love this idea and will definitely be playing a putter only round next time I go out to my local course. I would love to hear what your ideal putter is for a putter only round, or do you use more than one? If so maybe a follow up video with what you typically take with you on a putter only round would be nice!
Definitely! When I play putter only rounds I’ll take my Pig and Envy out alongside my putting putter!
Robbie,
I’m 56 and just purchased a starter disc set. Haven’t thrown yet. So my question is, as someone brand new, and I mean new, to the sport what’s the best way to begin.
Fantastic advice!
You are helping. Alot!
This has been such a help for my backhand game- putters are your friend 😅
A buddy of mine I play with who is significantly better than I am told me to break down my up shots into two categories. Shorter secondary drives, and long primary puts.
Great content on this channel.
Love your stuff Robbie. I quote you all the time on the course. For the sake of implementing this... what would you consider is a putter? 3 speeds and down?
3 or 4. Aka I’d let a zone or harp fly in a putter only round!
Hey Robbie, luv yur vids and whatch them regularly 10/10.
How can i send you a question ?
Head over to instagram or email me! robbiecdiscgolf@gmail.com
I recently crushed my lat. pure and my brother was shocked it went 200 feet. Love throwing putters. Still working on a good grip to get it to not fly nose up. Any tips. Or older video with info?
Putter rounds work. Very true. Shit I can almost throw putter as far as most my drives
Liking and commenting for the algorithm.
yes, yes, and Yes Robbie!
Most of the time when I play putter only I usually do better than bringing my whole bag out but destroyer time is more fun especially when you have to look for it for half an hour.
Do you count approach discs like Harps/Zones/Pigs as putters?
Appreciate ya
I can throw putters up to 250ft. I can throw 12-speed discs under 250ft. That's why i don't throw fast drivers. I have some drivers in my bag for special throws that need a strong fade or smth like that, but otherwise my main to-go discs are mostly either mid-range or fairway drivers. I have gone into throwing more putters once again as i bought myself 5 new putters for putting. Now my old putters are my throwing putters.
I did almost crush a hole with a putter once. couldve gotten an ace if i aim more to the right lol. the Axiom ENVY is no joke.
Im curious what putter would be recommended, i understand stable with some glide but not over stable. I putt with shields, used to putt with wizards.
Are you asking more so for Throwing or Putting?
Hole #2 on my home course is 225 over water. Can’t throw putter that far. Advice?
I usually play a putter only round once a week. It really helps with distance.
Playing in a single putter only tournament Saturday, it's almost like this video was for me.
I hope one day I hear commentary a pro game 😂 think you would do an amazing job
Confidence..... the thing i have 0% of. Man you called me out too. Had a bad past week and tried to actually sell my discs to my friends that ive gotten into the game. But im still out here trying.
Thanks
I'm slapping 200-250 holes with my Judge and Buzz on normal days. Once in a while though I can't even hit that distance with my 10 speeds. Wtf, dang you frisbee golf gods!
“Let’s see how it plays out” 😂😂😂😂😂
Putter only round, I'm going with the ESP Nuke
"Hakuna Mattatta" 😂😂😂😂👍🏿
Hey Robbie, what platform is the Birdie Fam community?
It’s on Patreon, and we have private Facebook group where lots of interaction happens as well!
@@matthendrick1803 we have a discord as well that we jump on during live coverage!
@@JimJohnMarks
This is a much more detailed answer than mine and it is excellent :-)
@@JimJohnMarks Thanks, good advice. I probably won't get to visit the course in advance, but it's a very relaxed event and I'll be going with super-low expectations. It's entirely for fun, and if I don't finish at the bottom - happy days. And while I'm ok with playing a range of shots with a mix of discs on my home course, I'll take your advice and that of JeckllendHyde about playing safe. But maybe cut loose on Sunday afternoon...
Do you only use a single type of putter or different varieties when you do this?
I use a variety myself, but no more than two molds!
So, Simon's drive at Waco hole 18? 🤣
Luck
Is that the one where Eagle followed him and said "That was a putter"
@@SHIZZLER__ it sure was
