Now i know why my forehand lands 3 feet from my actual feets! :) I am holding it wrong, leaning back and do not load the gun. Back to prectice! Thank you Robbie, so valuable for someone struggling to learn!
My forehands have been doing this randomly and I rely on my forehand a lot as a southpaw. Legit starting this video now and am already thankful for you making this video.
Thanks Robbie, I have a fairly good 120ft standstill forehand. I think these 3 tips combined may help me with a walk up to head towards 200ft without "yeating" it sky high or turning it into a roller. 👍🙏
Love these tips! Can’t wait to try them all out. I’m a big fan of the “learn how to flick a putter smoothly” route because it shows me immediately when there are errors in my form. Three favourite discs to forehand are the Axiom Crave, Discraft Buzzz, and Prodigy A5 but have to give an honorable mention to both the Axiom Envy and Innova Thunderbird. 🙌
Zone/Teebird/Tesla depending on distance for top 3 discs. Great tips here. Getting on top of the disc for the follow through made a huge difference in my game. Digging these videos a lot, you're killing it Robbie.
Thanks for all the great videos. I have a weak forehand that feels terrible to throw. I saw the video with Abby as well and I will start with those basics as drills to see if I can develops a forehand that doesn't hurt. Thanks.
Helpful. Thank you. My three favourite forehand discs are Prince, Ballista Pro, and Longbowman. Need to seriously work on midrange and putter forehand.
FH only round today to work on the things you shared in this video They really helped. I threw several nice 200’ FH’s which is 50’ more than my norm. Thanks.
As a forehand dominate player I would suggest learning on a 7 speed disc. Small enough rim that fitting an unfamiliar grip is easy but also gets you accustomed to the shape and feel of a driver. There is quite a difference between low speed and high speed forehand technique.
Great forehand tips! My go to forehand disc are from slowest to fastest. 1. Yikun hammer 2. Esp flex zone 3. Kaxe Z 4. Lat 64 Explorer 5. Streamline Jet.
As far as tips go Cocking the wrist back, leaning and following through with the chest and finger placement. Newish player with about 6 months of experience. I for sure can get about 200-250 max for distance on a forehand that’s usually with all my discs so I know I’m leaking power somewhere but didn’t know where to start. As far as what my favorite discs to forehand go , I usually have a berg or warspear for forehands I just got a new zone and I’m using that for really overstable shots or something I need to hook hard. Just got a pig too and I see why you love it so much! I don’t forehand my miss they feel really strange. But for drivers I usually go for my champ eagle, sidewinder, and between a 165 Zeus and Wraith. Anyway I know that was more long winded but wanted to thank you for sharing these tips and I hope you are having a great offseason! 🫶🏾
Of ALLLLLL the topics you teach on, this topic (forehand form) is the one I need help on the most. I'd love to message you privately and show you just exactly why, but I'll try to type it out. I am right handed. My right middle finger, is cut off just below the first knuckle. So, I have about 2/3 of a right middle finger. I'm not that great at angry gestures, but I'm great with counting in fractions, and if you need to know when it's 4:30 I've got you covered. 😁So I can't do a two finger grip, and one finger just isn't even in the realm of control when I try to throw. So, I've been using a "Two and a half finger" grip. What that does wrist wise, is it makes me throw with the right index and ring pads on the flight plate, as it's near impossible to rotate your ring finger independent of your other fingers. So my wrist ends up angled up at about a 45 degree angle throughout the throw. And yet, instead of throwing nose up, I think I'm rolling my wrist because about 60% of the time I'm absolutely dirting my plastic. Like 40-50 feet in front of my drive, straight into the dirt. I have no idea what to do to fix this, but if anyone knows, it's Robbie C.
This tricky thing about any coach giving advice to a large group of people, is even though what they say can be correct, that doesn't mean it always applies to every person. For example, I agree that you need to use your wrist during a forehand, how ever that does depend on how flexible the person's elbow is and how much lag they create. If they can product a lot of whip using the elbow (without hurting themself), than keep a tighter wrist is actually very beneficial. A tight wrist moving forward like an elastic is going to produce far more power and spin than anyone can create just by using their wrist. How ever that depends on the person and their body. How ever it's important to point out (like you did), that just because it's a stiff wrist, doesn't mean you arm the disc. You need to have elbow flexibility to be able to snap the arm through.
Good point! Call me crazy, but check out this short. I learned to play squash in Singapore, and the motion looks/feels much the same as my best forehands (which happen occasionally!). It's way different than tennis. All about lag and "snap" or "slap". There is no way to roll too much if I do this right. ua-cam.com/users/shortsMPHhXO5vCf0
16:40 and the speak for baseball players, that posture I call it the "caveman" pushing my butt back leaning in to the shot. You referring and talking about the baseball throw makes it really click. Money. Great videos thank you Robbie.
Hehey! Great tips! I'm rolling them over as exemplified. I will focus on your points here and master silly flippy drivers during the offseason. I am able to throw FH about 330 ft. decently accurately. But the miss is more often than not turning the disc over. Even happens sometimes with beefy discs as well. I found relaxing the arm itself helps also. When trying to throw far I used to tense up more than I do today.
THANK YOU !!! I am soo much a victim of numero 3 ! And couldnt figure out why !!! 1 out of 3 allways just comes out nose up right up in the air, going nowhere... is so frustrating ! Cannot wait for the weekend, and going out trying to focus on this
Great video, content & tips.👍 I already have a great forehand, but I watched this video because recently my forehand is "broken". Any hole or approach where I need a 100-250 foot forehand I overturn it. I'm probably rolling my wrist or releasing the disc nose down or both. I guess I should go out & do some field practice to fix it, so I can get my forehand back to it's trustworthy form. 🤷♂️
Thanks Robbie, all those resonated. I'd maybe add getting into a 'loaded' stance with the non-throwing arm in the penultimate step. Elbow up and forward, hand back with the disk. It helped me anyway! My main problem is not getting a really clean release very often. I've tried moving the disc forward a bit so the sharp edge of the rim can't get caught behind the fold of skin between thumb and forefinger; it seems to help but I'm not completely convinced. Otherwise: Mako3, River, Musket.
I enjoyed your video. My most three favorite forehand disc: 1. The Burg for upshot’s to the basket that I want to go right to left and just land. 2. The Zone for shots that I want to go left to right and slide up to the basket. 3. The Justice for shots that I need to go farther distance than the Zone. Your thoughts?
it is super old here in Ohio currently, but I am going to focus on the last two pointers. Loading and leaning into the shot. Fingers crossed this helps.
Innova’s Champion Wraith hands down my best forehand disc in my bag. I can get a good turn out of my hand and the fade brings it back to get around obstacles or for that bit of extra distance
So with the spin drill in the beginning. I was using my Glitch and having the hardest time feel confident getting the disc to spin on the middle finger. I just tried the drill with my MVP Spin, and the transition from the flight plate to the rim is rounded, I was able to immediately get the disc to spin on my middle finger. Something to consider when trying to learn this drill.
From the video yesterday with Abby(?), I felt like I improved my forehand a little with your suggested grip. My take from Scott Stokely was that you want your finger pad on the rim. But putting it in the crease as you suggest instead, combined with really focusing on the wrist action seemed to result in a better and more controlled throw. Thank you so much for these tips! What are your thoughts on Stokely's throwing style? It's more upright and forward facing, and a wind up like a softball pitch. I tend to sometimes get shoulder pain throwing like, but I can't tell if I'm doing it wrong, or if it doesn't work for me because I'm unathletic, 37, very short, and throw a ball worse than most 8 year old girls. He claims his style is the only right way, and the dude can forehand farther than most, but it's hard to tell if that's just because of his incredible wingspan. Most pros throw more like you.
I tried all the grips but saw my biggest increase in distance and consistent distance when I went to the Sexton/Stokely/McBeth kind of "superfinger" grip. Pinching the index finger into the rim and then middle finger pinching into the index finger. The snap and speed was immediately noticeable for me and it felt more like pinching down on a baseball for me.
I played ultimate frisbee for decades, but for some reason I still can't get a good flick drive (I'm only confident with approaches). Hopefully these tips get me moving in the right direction!
Off topic, i love the way your hat just disappears into the background on a lot of the close up shots. On topic. My forehand is horrendous. It was functional when i started this sport a few months ago. While trying to improve it i totally lost it. Hopefully soon I'll have time to do field work and fix it with the advice you've given here
When your forehand is worse than the bad example...Lemme grab a notepad. I swear I've tried all three pad positions and it's always a rolled over wrist, unless I focus extremely hard on palm up. (Which just makes not only my shoulder, but my wrist hurt)
It never a great thing, because then it never gets the right amount of off-Axis torque. I have a smooth Zone forehand, but a terrible Teebird forehand. I know i can trust my forehand way more with a Zone. And i can get around 10ft close to my target with my zone.
TSA Construct, Axiom Tempo and most mids (hex, pathy, buzzz, MD3). When my forehand is on point, I can put an Infinite Pharoah on a crazy sweet flex shot about 280+. I don’t throw far btw
Forehand has always came to me way more naturally and just made more sense than backhand. I never really practiced it, been practicing backhand for a decade and the forehand is still just a capable. Kind of sad and cool at the same time.
Stil trying to figure out why the stack grip cause me high nose angle but the power grip does. Really not trying to figure it out, I just use the power grip
Naturally a Pig, (have 4-5 in my bag at any time) Uplink for right to left upshots Terra (OS fairway slot) Tesla (my pride and joy straight with overstable finish) I forehand everything in my bag even 150 g crave, virus, jade. It is more of a question what do I backhand.
I've got a mediocre forehand but to get the disc snuggly into my fingers (RH Power grip but with the middle finger touching the index) I just rest my left hand on my right wrist, to the back of the disc... and pull it back a little... "Cock the Trigger". For me it works a treat.. if only my 56+yo left hip/back muscle didn't take the brunt of my bad form (I can throw RHBH all day, and just did a 4 round 18 in scorching heat Rapa Rumble without a problem (well my afternoon rounds were terrible but that ones on me.. and the wind picking up) [EDIT] Oblique... is that the word... OK.. lets try leaning forward.. (I don't lean back but did I mention 'Mediocre'... That's my catch phrase)..
100%! Once I got my forehand form correct it stopped hurting afterwards to have played with forehand. Good form is usually something that your body is very okay with so if it hurts, then there are probably form issues.
Lol I was looking for something to watch while I drink my coffee, perfect timing!
Now i know why my forehand lands 3 feet from my actual feets! :) I am holding it wrong, leaning back and do not load the gun. Back to prectice! Thank you Robbie, so valuable for someone struggling to learn!

Never thought the day would come... lol this Taylor is doing great but wishing it was warmer and nicer DG weather in NY
Thank you Robbie I got my first ever birdie to today an then birdie the next hole. You're great thank you
This could easily be the best forehand instructions out there… thx😀
Zone/Teebird/Tesla depending on distance for top 3 discs.
Great tips here. Getting on top of the disc for the follow through made a huge difference in my game. Digging these videos a lot, you're killing it Robbie.
That last one is 100 percent me, definitely makes so much sense now. Thanks Robbie!
Bro, thank you so much! I was leaning back and sending the Trail sky high. I'll remember your tips after winter. Cheers!
good stuff Robbie. Thanks.

(Perpetual) Beginner here, this was excellent information for me about fingerpad placement and loading the disc.
That example of a baseball infielder was a great demonstration!
Great job Robby, keep up the good work!
I am new to the sport and learning how to this properly. I was going to try my Buzz the next time I go out.
Great disc, great beginner disc.
Tried my friend’s Buzzz, and its one of the best beginner discs.
What plastic do you have it in? ESP, Z or Big Z?
@lucasfjellberg6903 I have it in Buzzz SS version

@hyrulehyzers i have been throwing nothing faster then a 7 speed. I'm not ready for the higher speeds yet.
Thank you for that info.@@hyrulehyzers

Great forehand tips! My go to forehand disc are from slowest to fastest. 1. Yikun hammer 2. Esp flex zone 3. Kaxe Z 4. Lat 64 Explorer 5. Streamline Jet.
If you like the Jet, have you tried the Trace on a forehand? That is my forehand go-to disc for distance.
I have a no side arm so all these tips are extremely helpful.
Another excellent vid. My forehand is definitely my better throw. But it’s still lacking. So I’m excited to implement your advice!

I bend down vertically then angle the body to keep the nose down while having lean in the body. That's what helped me.

Halo destroyer, wrath(it’s flat flies pretty straight with a slight finish), zone
Grip grip grip. That’s what gets me. I fh ESP zone, Jawbreaker zone, and 168g star destroyer.
PAD is the correct term for that part of the finger. also i like to forehand with my champ thunderbird or gstar leopard.
Bohrium, Zone, Valkyrie (HM: Havoc, Mamba)
My brother has no backhand but he says he can’t throw the Bohrium forehand because of the rounded lip. For me it is just too fast for my ability.
My three forehand mistakes:
1. I throw a forehand
2. I throw a second forehand
3. I don't give it a rest...and throw a third forehand.
Off topic, i love the way your hat just disappears into the background on a lot of the close up shots.
