I've been working for UPS for 25 years. In my experience, there are more benefits in being in the union (Teasmters) than you would be in management. In my experience, management can terminate you automatically. If you are a Teamster, there is a disciplinary process aka your Weingarten Rights. In short, you can't get fired automatically. There are exceptions to these set of circumstances of course. But through my years of experience, this is what I've witnessed. I'm a proud to be a member of the Teamster Union.

Theres a waitlist. When you sign up just ask how many years seniority the highest people on the list have. OR just use word of mouth at your hub. Ask fulltime supervisors or other union members. Wait times vary based on the hub you're at. You can also lower that wait time by being willing to drive for hubs. Example, Might take you 8 years at Worldport but in the next city over they'll take you in 3 years.

Where I work as a UPS ramp agent our schedule is not set in stone. If there are any delays due to aircraft maintenance/break down you have to stay there with the aircraft until it is either repaired or all of the cans have been swapped over to another plane. Even if nothing is wrong with the plane you still have to stand by and wait until the plane has taken off and has flown out a certain distance before you are allowed to go. Some folks have had to stay anywhere from 2 to 3 hours past thier shift due to unloading/loading planes due to mechanical breakdown. So if you have another job you have to get to make sure you are aware this can happen. We get $14.50/hour

Just for reference, at Amazon I was expected to load about 110-170 packages per hour, and that was calculated graciously based upon what the packages weighed. Heavier packages meant less volume you'd have to load, lesser items like small bags and >10lbs boxes meant more parcels you'd have to load. It'd equal out to a fair day's work. MEANWHILE at UPS, the flat rate was 400 packages per hour (PPH), weight wasn't factored in at all. That could mean either a constant steady stream of 3lbs parcels you could easily lift and toss into the trailer, or it could mean getting 150 packages crushing into your trailer all at once that weigh 50+ lbs each that you'd have to powerlift every couple seconds to keep up with the flow. Your PPH would reflect the same as someone else only loading light packages. Not keeping up with the "flow" and your "PPH" could mean a write up. UPS isn't updating their decades old facilities to accommodate for the modern demand of internet commerce. Amazon is, and the PPH shows. I also made $19/hr at Amazon starting, vs the $14/hr starting at UPS. And I didn't get benefits at UPS til I reached 9 months, in the meantime I had already been paid a $200 initiation fee + 2.5x my hourly rate biweekly.

@@JohnSmith-rn5tb True, but it takes so long to get there. You have to spend ~3 years as a package handler making minimum wage, getting <25 hours a week, doing absolute back breaking work. And the BS doesn't stop once you make driver. Yeah I'm capped out a $44/hr, but even before COVID hit they were loading my package car up to the roof. It's so jacked up. I had 400 stops yesterday. FOUR HUNDRED. When I started, it was more like 200. We all want to quit every single day, but the pay is the only thing keeping a roof over my head lol

The job is full bullshit, hear it from someone who has been through this. It’s basically a minimum wage labor job. You will go to work about 4 to 5 hours everyday at UPS. Then you leave from there all fucked up really hard. There’s no way of getting another full time or part time job along with UPS. That’s just all talk. So you’ll be making about 300 to 400 per week at max. Again, the job is minimum wage, and all the benefits and pluses about the job people brag about is FULL BULL SHIT my guy. The benefits is like a paid vacation in which no one cares about. What’s the difference if I sit at home and get paid that one week, or worked it off and got paid? And also, which company doesn’t give paid vacations yet?? Another benefit is the medicare or medicaid bullshit crap. For one, whoever works at UPS with its income, will 100% qualify for medicaid, and I already got it. And 2, who does really visit hospitals that much though? 90% of works have not even entered a hospital ever since the past 10 years or so. Think about it yourself, how often do you go? Would you really need health insurance that bad? Put all those fake benefits aside, and just look at your income. Your not becoming a lawyer, or a doctor, or an engineer. You will be making about $1,500 a month. Also, the whole place is like a dumpster. It’s usually way too dark and dimmed inside, lights are minimized, and it’s gonna be like a whole mess. The other workers are people who probably never finished 3rd grade. It’s like a whole zoo of monkeys. The place is very unprofessional. Ok so if you don’t want to go to college or just can’t for some reason, and want to start working immediately? And you don’t have that much options and opportunities to take, then it’s fine. But take these tips and tricks. 1. Don’t talk to any worker, unless your lying or it’s just small talks. Be careful you say the wrong thing and then you get a Spanish guy ripping his shirt open and wanting to jump you. So go in there, mind your own business, start working, get out, and go home and return back to your normal life and enjoy your money. 2. If you find someone who’s good, make connections and friends, so you may make the work more enjoyable. Yes, this is opposing tip number 1, but find at least one person to cooperate with. Even though they are all bs, then find the least of them. Trust me, you’ll need backup, and need them whenever. 3. Go in there and work the least amount of speed thats required. Find whats required, and do just that. So if you have to do 100 boxes a day, then do just that, and don’t do 101 boxes. And it’s very important to work slow on your first day and next days. They go with your speed. If you started with 100 boxes per day, then if you keep on doing that much, they will like it. But if you started doing 1,000 boxes in a few days, then did only 900 per day, they will beef up on you. So make sure to go slow, and show them that’s the max you can go, and your trying your best. And don’t go too slow b/c you want to earn your income and not get it when you don’t deserve it, b/c karma’s there and you’ll lose it, trust me. And you wouldn’t want to get fired for working under speed. But just don’t kill yourself. So, all in all, that’s so you could leave from there and still have energy to go to your next job. So you could start making the real money, that’ll get you a crib and some real car, like a brand you BMW. Suppose you make $25,000 at ups part time, then in your full time job you make $30,000. Then you’ll be busting out $55,000 at year. So in 10 years, if you managed your money well, you’ll have over half a million dollars. And also you’ll be making probably near or over $100,000 from both jobs by getting the raises. That’s why you shouldn’t fuck yourself up at UPS and go home to sleep after. So hear it from someone who has been through all this. It doesn’t seem as it is from the outside. Best bet is to chose a career path better and higher than this, such as getting certified somewhere, or getting a degree. The job is very miserable, tiring, and they treat you like a trash can. Some of the managers think they own UPS. You’re really there to only help with assistance with completing their tasks. It’s like it’s of as of the managers are leading the operations, and they hired in a few workers to work, then send you out, and then they take the credit to themselves. And your not mentioned or thanked. For example, I once busted out 6 full trucks alone in just a few hours, and the managers were just chatting and were supervising me, then at the end I was told that theres no more work and Im good to go. And I heard them say “yes we did it...” . It’s like it’ their job, their good, and you just came in to help them and gtfo, and it’ll be like they did complete all of those tasks. In other words, it’s like they did almost all of the work and did finish almost all the difficult tasks and operations that are to happen by thinking smart and hiring some random workers, and supervising them, and navigating them to different tasks, then sending them out afterwards. There’s no such thing as you being in there with a community, with benefits, and being a UPS member or any bullshit of that sort. You will be taken advantage of, and will be miserable.
