  • This KA had an issue with the worm drive gear, and when it arrived, the worn brushes were not making contact with the armature. These parts were all replaced, and the machine cleaned and lubed up, now it is a good runner once again!

    Much thanks. Between this video and another explaining the brushes (for when I inevitably put them in wrong and the machine wouldn't start after putting it together), I successfully cleaned and replaced the worm gear assembly and regreased my KSM5. It's a hand me down from mom, prolly 25 +years old. I don't know if they're the same quality today, but man, that's longevity.

    Hello Rick, God to see you're doing so well. Maybe it's time to bring in an intern to help. Just a thought. Well after much much groveling and begging my wife I have finally wore her down and I am now looking to purchace a Hobart A 200. I love the smaller models but just not enough umph to do what we need. For what the boat ancher 6 qt. kitchen aid and all it's attachments cost I can get a good used A 200 with three standard atachments plus the pelican head. One guy even has one with a meatgrinder for a couple of bucks more, that's the one I'm eyeballing right now. We still enjoy your videos you make them so easy to watch. The fast forward with sound really cracks us up. I would still like to send you the one mixer for clean and lube, but it can wait on it's shelf till you have more time. Keep going man as you can see your tallents are needed by many. Hope your wife is doing well. We'll check back for a available time slot. (I probabley should not drink and message, oh well) Mike and Bronwynn

      Hey buddy, thanks!! I think once I get caught up, it will go pretty smoothly, just seemed to be a bunch came in all at once there!
      Sometimes you just got to have the power you need instead of trying to get by I guess, the bigger machines certainly do pack a lot more power. Sounds like you found a pretty good deal too!
      I will still be putting out videos as well, as I get caught up. Seems I am in the middle of a few that need parts, etc so some are 95% finished and getting put on a shelf till a part comes in, and holding up the video upload lol.
      Hope all is well with you guys, thanks again!!

    I've hit a wall on fixing my wife's Hobart Kitchen Aid K5-A and I thought with your experience you might be able to answer a couple of questions. The mixer has no serial or model numbers on it except that it's a K5-A by Hobart. It was purchased in 1974 by my wife. It was diagnosed by an electric motor shop as having a bad armature with a dead spot on the windings. It would run briefly then not run. I looked up parts on the internet and found an armature that was supposed to work. When it arrived it looked very similar with the exception of the fan. The new one was a multi-bladed fan that was slightly wider and in a slightly different location on the armature shaft. It appeared to fit until I attempted to fit the baffle plate. The fan stopped the plate from going all the way onto the shaft and because of that the rear bearing holder wouldn't seat correctly either. On close inspection, I could see the type of fan and it's location was the issue. It appears this armature is for perhaps a K5SS with the solid state internals. Every supplier that shows they sell these armatures have the ones with the different fan, not like the flat one on my mixer.
    After all that, my question: I've seen there is a picture of a different rear bearing holder on some sites that is supposed to fit these older mixers but the picture shows a more open, slightly cup shaped bearing holder that is different than mine. I'm wondering if this would work to provide the extra clearance for the bigger, thicker fan. If not I've got an un-fixable mixer for lack of a part. I wonder if any of your viewers have any ideas?

    Hi Rick, great video ! I do have one thing to comment about, I also collect sewing machines and I learned long ago to never use "3 in 1 oil" it is a combination of three oils and two of the oils are for protection and as they dry or oxidize, they harden to form a protective layer, it works well for guns and things like that. The oil I used to use on was Zoom spout and it worked fine and did not harden, I found I needed to oil machines about every six months or so. I found something much better " Liquid Bearings 100% synthetic lubricant " this can be purchased on e-bay and I think Amazon, This oil is made with oil molecules all the same size and it works so well and does not dry out, I find I can now go for two years between oiling on my machines and it seems they work smother as well. I have used this as my go to oil for about six years now and would be lost without it. Another great thing about this oil is it has stainless steel needle spouts that come with it you can chose the length or several lengths and be very precise with the amount, on things like clocks. Best to you, Brett

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  5 років тому

      Hi Brett! Thanks for the tip on the synthetic oil, the technology in lubricants has really evolved! That sounds like it would be perfect for mixers as well, since most do not get the periodic oiling they require. Im not sure what the protective layer in the 3 in 1 consists of, but that would probably be beneficial to the mixers too considering the environments some are used and stored in. I may look into that oil for my sewing machine as well, since I don't use it a lot, and when I got it and oiled it, it looked like the places that get oil were a bit gummy so I had to try to clean them as best as I could. It also needs to go in for service at some point for adjustments, which I know nothing about.
      Thanks!

    • @brettster3331
      @brettster3331 5 років тому +1

      Hi Rick, The gummy condition you found in your sewing machine is the result of 3 in 1 oil being used in it, either use the synthetic oil or a quality sewing machine oil, with repeated use the new oil will help to wash out the old gummy stuff. You are a great one for maintenance on things and sewing machine service is usually just cleaning and oiling, so if your machine is sewing good just use it, and play with the thread tension to learn what is right, the bobbin tension is pre-set and very rarely needs any attention so just note the tension number or letter you start with and go one number up or down to see what is happening with you stitch, you want your threads to meet in the middle of you fabric seam. be noting your original setting you can always go back to it. For oiling, the place to oil the most is the bobbin race area around the bobbin holder, a drop in this are every few days of sewing is good if you use it a lot. The thing you found with the gumming up is what happens with 3 in 1 oil, it clogs up the holes in bronze bushings and clogs up any felts or wicks meant to feed oil into the bearings. Best to you Rick, Brett

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  5 років тому

      Thanks Brett! I will get some proper oil for my sewing machine before I use it next. I think I have figured out the tension thing, I noticed I did have to change it some when sewing thicker materials, and I just practiced on scraps for quite a while to figure it out. I have wanted to do a lot more sewing but just haven't had the time, so I will take the machine to get checked and serviced in the meantime, I think some curtains will be my next project :)

      There's a slip ring around the shaft. It's a ring with a little hole on each side. It's a PITA to remove and put back on, fyi. I used a flat head screwdriver to get under the slip ring and pry it off. There are pliers made for slip rings, but you can manage without them.

    Hi,
    How would I determine if the armature is damaged? When I start the mixer, I get a grinding noise with a burning smell. I changed the grease and checked the gears in the mixer.

    • @vintagemixersandmore1666
      @vintagemixersandmore1666  4 роки тому

      You would have to test it with a multimeter to determine if it is bad. Worn brushes and a worn speed control plate could also cause it to run rough which would be noisy as well. There is also a bearing on the front of the armature, I have never seen one fail, but if it did it could make a lot of noise and the drag could heat up the motor causing it to smell hot. Just a few things I can think of off the top of my head.

      I think you can order parts for that model from anywhere that sells kitchenaid parts, like partselect.com . I did not use the food grade grease for that very reason, it breaks down and leaks everywhere, I used a lithium based grease. I think there is a silicon based food grade grease, I dont recall the name, someone else had told me about it, but if you look up food grade grease you may find it.

      Those KSM5s have always growled and rattled. They were quite noisy compared to, for example, the Pro-Line 7 series they have today. I had one from 1996, and it was a Hobart design just like the K5SS. Used it for 7 years to make ordinary bread, cookies, or anything that fancied me. It finally started leaking around the ring over the planetary gear, and I paid $80.00 to fix that before giving it to my biological mother. That mixer was so shot, it would smell like the old Sunbeam Mixmasters while it was in operation. Last I remember, she was using it as a decoration and still uses a wooden spoon. My 4 year old Commercial 8 will run circles around that old KSM5, and that 4 year old machine is still weak compared to my 18 year old Berkel PM-10!

    Re: After repair, mixer works, but stops turning under load
    A couple viewers should find this info useful.
    I replaced the worm gear on the one I'm repairing; the mixer had been well used over the years. But it stopped turning under load: the pinion turns, but the center gear stops. After much pondering, it occurred to me to look very closely at the pinion gear. Aha! The teeth at the bottom of the gear look just like the teeth on the center gear: each tooth has nice 'shoulders' on each face of the tooth. But on the top of the pinion gear, the shoulders on the 'load' side of the teeth are worn off. (The tops of the teeth on the center gear, in my case, look OK, but I haven't checked the bottom of those teeth.) Then I thought to check the bearings. And yes, there is play in the lower bearing (maybe 1/32 inch when inserted fully into the bearing); the top bearing has a little play. This wear combines to make the pinion no longer connect properly with the center gear under load.
    The easiest solution is to buy a complete worm/pinion assembly. And if the teeth on the center gear are worn, buy one of them, too. If the case gasket is iffy, get that as well. (All three about US$71 at partsdr.com, with ground shipping, but pre-tax, as of 7/22. You get the gasket, the worm/pinion assembly, center gear and attachment bevel gear.) For that price, I'll just buy all three and be done. Brushes look good; don't need them.

  • @Andy-sv5qy

    Hi Rick - I need to replace the worm gear on our Kitchenaid KS5M ProLine mixer just as you did in this video. The old gear was metal and I see you were able to replace the metal worm gear on the mixer in your video with another metal worm gear. All I can find to replace it with are cheap plastic gears. Is it still possible to get a true metal replacement and not have to rebuild this with some cheap plastic knock-off??? The mixer was originally purchased in 1994 and this is the first time it has ever needed service despite significant usage over the almost 30 years it has been in service. I just hate the thought of taking a machine that was built to last (and did) and rebuilding it with a part that has since been engineered specifically to be a planned point of failure. How were you able to get a metal replacement gear??

    • @Andy-sv5qy
      @Andy-sv5qy 2 роки тому

      Well... I feel silly. It turns out that the gear merely LOOKED like metal. But it wasn't; it was the nylon one (reinforced with kevlar or carbon fiber I think?) it just happened to be colored such that it looked like it was metal. That said, after thoroughly researching this part and searching for a metal option, what I did find is that there are a lot of cheap knock-off parts circulating. I took care to be sure that I was getting a genuine factory oem replacement. The new part had the same metalic look as the original part. Many aftermarket worm gears are out there which, people are reporting, are not affixed firmly to the shaft and so they slip on the shaft under load. Basically the motor keeps running, but the beater slows down or even stops, yet the gears are not stripped, they're just slipping and rotating on the shaft. So far everything is working very well again after this repair.

      Hi Harold, I would say 99% of the time it would be the worm gear, if not then it's really hard to guess what it could be instead, perhaps the planetary or sun gear in the planetary housing? One other thing I just thought of, take a look in the planetary at the gear that is held on with a screw, remove the screw and washer and lift the gear, there should be a little pin under it that locks it to the shaft. If this pin were to shear off it would also cause the planetary to not turn. Hope this helps!

      I have covered this topic before in other videos, but it is pretty much personal preference. Food grade grease needs to be food grade since it will inevitably leak, look at any kitchenaid after a few years and notice the staining, especially around the band. I say if the grease stays in the gearbox where it belongs, like any good quality stable grease will, then it is not necessary, but once again it is all personal preference.

      One gear is metal, the other is fiber or plastic, depending on the model and year, I dont see how the metal gear will wear the same as the plastic gear it is in contact with, unless you are referring to another gear? I stopped using food safe grease when I realized it turns runny when it gets warm, and breaks down much quicker than lithium based grease, then soaks through the gasket, under the band, staining the finish and running all down and into the machine. I have heard so many people complain about that, so I use the high quality lithium based grease that keeps its viscosity under extremely warm conditions, and will not seperate or break down. I prefer the grease to stay in the gear box, but the option to use food safe whirlpool grease was always there.

      @@vintagemixersandmore1666 I have a KSM5 mixer, still running well. Do you fix Kenwood mixers? I was thinking of changing to Kenwood Titanium when the KitchenAid dies. Just wondered if the Kenwood is as good. Thanks.
