I just found this exact mixer at a thrift store for $40 U.S. Came with the bowl and 1 attachment. It works perfect. We purchased a new one 10 years ago for $350! When I saw it I had to get it!
Great mixer, we’ve had ours for almost 40 years also. Ours is hinged at the stand instead of having the bowl lift mechanism. Now I know how to service it when the time comes. Thank you. 👍
I have the same mixer, maybe a bit newer, I bought it to mix chemicals together for another purpose. I never did as I was gifted a commercial Hobart 30qt 3 speed mixer w/bowl, paddle and dough hook to do the chemicals and It weighs about a hundred pounds and will tear your arm off if not careful... The Kitchen Aid is like NIB, now I know how to service it👍 Yummy looking bread bro.
Kitchen aid are amazingly well built machines and probably the best mixer on the market for both home use and small commercial, the modern one have nylon cogs/gears. The old ones, like this will last forever!! You will never need to buy another mixer. The ex-wife used to have one for making custom cakes, I’ve been after one for quiet a while but don’t want to pay the cost of them when new 😆.
Thanks 🙂yes it will probably outlast me! I've used it quite a few times since making the video. I think the last time was making some quiches, and I've made Tiramisu with it too 👍
Great video, looking forward to hopefully seeing more baking, because it looked amazing 😊 it's definitely a great machine I got one I inherited from my grandmother, might consider changing the grease now that I have a go to guide
I’ve watched several videos about this mixer, and none of them mentioned how to adjust the revolutions per second. Good to know. I’m also shocked by that gear being metal and not nylon. I imagine it serves that same purpose as shear pins on a snowblower. If something jams it, the sacrificial piece saves the motor/trans. Wonderful video. Thank you.
Thankyou so much for this video; will you be kind to let me know if there is a way of greasing/lubricating the gears without dismantling the machine? Mille grazie
Fascinating that they don’t make stuff like they used too, well done and very well explained. I have my parents old 1000w Panasonic combination microwave all song and dancing, it was purchased from John Lewis in 2006 and it’s used daily and still going strong, I replaced the turntable motor as it was starting to stop and start turning…..
Very good video! Nice speed and explanation so the viewer can work along while watching. My same mixer from 1995 is running strong. I bought it as a factory refurb in 1997. Mine is the dark gray crinkle paint (no finger prints) Pro-Line Series mixer. Same as yours just a different color. I use it to bake bread 2-3 times weekly. They say these older ones were built much better than the new ones. I expect this mixer will last me the rest of my life! THANKS for this video. Have fun baking!!
This brought back some memories as my grandmother had a mixer identical to that. I remember looking forward to visiting her on weekends because of all the amazing stuff she would bake for me and my sister. My mother still has the mixer and uses it to this day, I'll have to do what you've done now I know how to do it. Thanks....
Great to see a quality appliance refurbished. It will hopefully live on another 30 years and not tossed in the landfill. It wont be long until we have no place to discard our crap.
Speaking of things from back in the day being built to last. My parents still have an old tube style tv with a built in vcr. It still works its like 20 or 24 inches. Im 35 and we had it when i was growing up. Flat screens last maybe 3 to 5 years.
I was thinking you should test the machine by mixing some ingredients and cooking something. Yeah, thanks for that! it's weigh day at slimming world and that looked so scrumptious. Regards, Geoff.
I have an old K5 kitchen aid unit built by Hobart that I've been meaning to take apart and rebuild, it works but it needs love, I believe mine is from the 60-70's.
I don't know what I am more impressed with the baking or the repair/service of the mixer. I really enjoy your approach and attention to detail even including the food safe grease, you must of heard me say I wonder if that is food safe as 10 mins later you clarified. You are right these days they do not make things to last or easy to fix, sometimes they even try and make it harder if not impossible to fix stuff on purpose. I am binge watching your videos and really enjoying them, this channel deserves lots more subs. When are you starting a baking channel? 😁
😂😂😂😂 I only started baking because we live so remote. The nearest supermarket is a 40 mile round trip. Even a takeaway is an hour round trip at least. I've been told I make great pizzas, so I might look for a faulty bread maker at some point and knock some pizzas up on a video 🙂I also learned how to do Chinese takeaway food from a channel called ziangs food workshop. They are quite funny too 👍
That is so cool, I will check out the channels as I enjoy baking as well but I don't do a lot of it. Would be nice to see some of the other food you bake. Maybe if you find a faulty bread maker you could bake us viewers a loaf. I have made some bread a few years back during covid but I did it by hand. Hmm wonder if I can find a faulty bread maker and fix it. I will probably get out bid by you. 😄 Still the bread maker would be in better hands as my fixing skills are not as good as yours. @@BuyitFixit
@ISquishWorms Thank you my friend. If you like baking I'd recommend John Kirkwood's channel. I've made a few of his recipes, especially the quiches. They are so quick and easy to make and delicious. I've also made carrot cake and chocolate cup cakes from cupcake Jemma's channel both of which were delicious also!
I had a Hand Blender one day it stopped working and i had a look at it hoping to fix it the only way to get into it was to mess the housing up as there was no other way of getting into it and all that was wrong with it was a fuse on the board blow. Great video well done
Thanks 👍Yeah I had a look at a hand blender at our local repair cafe as I volunteer there helping repair stuff. Thermal fuse next to the motor had gone, but it was a bit of a nightmare to get into as there was clips over the screws that lock in once they were pushed into place. I had to pry them out it wasn't too bad of a mess but I know what you are saying.
Another great video as always. Nice to watch, as I intend in getting one myself one day. I did notice however you forgot to connect the cable at one point, as it seemed to miraculously be fitted at the end. I was waiting for one of your Doh moments. Ha Ha.
You're a cruel man sir - showing that bread at the end. Great job on the service, this ought to out live you for sure. Now I have to go and rustle something up to eat now...
There are different kinds of Kitchenaid mixers. Some have nylon gears and other use metal. If you want to buy one new or refurbished, contacting the company is a good way of finding out who sells the "good" ones.
I was expecting some mechanical type speed reducer. Not what's basically a mechanically driven PWM system. Pretty interesting and it's lasted a long time!
Lovely video, I really enjoyed it. I think, personally, I might have tried to 3d-Print the knob, instead of buying the whole leaver. I seem to remember that you own a 3d-Printer, too.
Thanks 👍This thing is built like a tank! I've used it quite a few times since making the video and it's working great! I'm sure it will out last me! Yes I do have a 3d printer. I bought an ender 5 to do a repair video on, but it turned out it had the 8 bit board like the ender 3 I looked at for a friend so I just upgraded it to the 32 bit board and didn't bother doing a video on it. Although I did have to compile the firmware, as the BLTouch version on the ender site didn't work correctly.
They changed to nylon pinion gear to prevent the damage to the operator. They were so powerful with the case hardened steel pinion, it was strong enough to pull you into the mixing bowl with your bread dough. Not a good look for the cooking challenged amongst us. 🙂
Agree, I only came across them because of the channels I was watching, and noticed that both were using the same mixer but perhaps slightly newer models. The old saying 'They don't make them like they used to...' lol
I just fixed one of these where the nylon gear was fine, but the smaller metal gear at the bottom was completely stripped. Maybe it's just to make it quieter
Nice job, thank you for the video Regarding the replacement gear it's probably plastic to save on cost, much cheaper to mold a nylon gear than to machine one or make it from sintered metal, some sewing machines used a similar nylon gear and over time the plastic shrunk and the gear cracked making the machine unusable.
I recently rebuilt a Sunbeam mixer as it needed a good clean. Similar speed control of turning the motor on and off but entirely mechanical, two sets of points! Probably 1960's. Worm drive on the arbour to two gears that drive the paddles. I had hoped to make a dough hook for it but it doesn't have the gearing/too fast.
Oh I've not seen different size bowls. I've seen the type like this one and the tilt head with the glass bowl that has three prongs that locks into the base.
@@BuyitFixitthis one has a free running plate that the bowls sit on with radial grooves so they don't fly off. The plate has to positions so that the beaters are towards the side of the bowls. Twin beater one pear shaped to follow and clear the side of the bowl and a square cornered one that sits towards the middle of the bowl. I've just used it to make some of @theinfoworks 's buns (cup cakes). It occured to me that as it's a commutator motor with mechanical/points perhaps I could run it on a 110v site transformer for a slower speed?
Thank you! Great vid! I have a Kitchenaid Mixer like. It's a 2018 year model. Just as tough, however I am sure it has the plastic cog. It's still going strong though.
As a de-greaser, try Elbow Grease (not joking). Available in squirty bottles in places like Home Bargains, B&M etc, or bigger bottles over the Internet. Shove your parts in that to soak, and they'll come out like new!!
Good to see this! Yes, these things are tanks. You got a good price as well. I just got back from the flea market and saw three for sale, two were the non-lift bowl types. You don't really have to change the grease, since they do come with a lifetime amount, but I agree if I were to open it up I would too. If I recall, the reason why these are so tough and easy to repair is the original models were made by Hobart, the manufacturer for large commercial stand mixers, and the design hasn't changed much in 100 years. I am a bit curious as to what you're going to make with it?
Well I already made some Garlic bread 😂😂. My daughter had a small stand at a kids market thing a couple weeks back and I got the job of making cakes for her to sell.. that's pretty much why I ended up looking for one. We also don't have much in the way of fast food where we live so if I ended up learning how to make pizzas from scratch and how to make Chinese food 😂😂
@@BuyitFixit I'm at my Dad's house this week and I'll be making Key Lime Cheesecake Pie today with his Classic series one. With all the food you're making, could we see a "Buy it, Cook it" channel from you? 😃
yes, they changed to the nylon gear as a weak point to protect the gear box. and as a side note, if you are replacing a stripped nylon gear, never buy an aftermarket one. get the oem part from kitchen aid or your going to be doing it again in a few weeks. Ask me how I know!
Thanks Bill👍 I thought that's why they must have changed it. Seems that the unit I have must have gotten jammed at some point by the way the two pins on the main shaft looked. Sorry to hear about your experience with the original nylon cog, but glad you got your unit back up and running in the end🙂
I just bought the same one today at a thrift store . Worm cog needs replacing , Bowl riser mechanism is punched and the speed arm won’t stay in the off position.
Well done. I had visions of you printing or casting a new knob, though a step too far in this case (and would cost more dough). A suggestion (egg-related metaphors not intended), when knocking pins through support the opposite side with something. I wondered whether there was a clutch or similar to avoid damage if jammed (no surprise a replacement was nylon, which would have lasted about 5 mins).
*(WHAT IS THAT WAILING I HEAR AT **21:08**!?)* 😮 Nice job. I might actually try this reconditioning myself! My lift bowl mixer was found at a thrift store for $75, tax included, with 3 beaters, a bowl and a pour rim. I've read my serial# 3165528 for the model# K5SS-AC as being manufactured in 1993/1994. If that's right, it's 30 years old...and looks and sounds wonderful. If it's a newer model, that's still not bad, wouldn't you say?
Made me hungry for some garlic bread ...... You sure got your money's worth with that machine ...... You got it looking great and it's gonna last you a lifetime with that PM you put into it.... Take Care Mon Ami ....
be carefull with food grade grease over a very long time as an engineer I have seen component life reduced by upto 80% when using some types the old petroleum based greases can last a lifetime in many cases
Interesting, it looked like petroleum based grease that was in originally but food grade was recommended when I was looking what grease to use. Thanks for letting me know 👍
Hi Mike can yust beat your mixer with the wife's Ken wood chef. Bought in UK 1977 to do a Christmas cake has travelled with us to NZ AND I did a full repair on the motor brushes amazed that parts were available but from the UK still going strong. The grand daughter borrows it and has her eye on it as said they don't make things to last more to land fill. Stay safe.olo NZ.
Yes agree, if you bought a modern day mixer, I'd be amazed if you got a couple of years out of it before it was ready to go in the bin. I have one of those "Ninja" food processors. The blending jug cracked on the 3rd use around the base where the motor shaft goes through, and food processor bowl a bit broke off where the lid attaches. Very poor quality IMHO.
37:34 sounds a bit metal-on-metaly to me, did you miss a spot that needs grease? also, awesome video, should I ever have to service ours, I'll use this as a manual :)
Yeah I noticed it sounded a bit metal on metal on the video, not sure if it was just the camera picking that up as I didn't notice it when it was being used. Thanks for commenting 👍
I can't recall seeing any adjustment on it. I did have the bowl arm assembly off to lubricate it slightly which is where I'd think the only adjustment could be, but can't remember seeing anything.
😂😂😂Funny you should say that.. we do actually have a just eat bag that a friend got for us, because any decent takeaway is about 30 or 40 mins drive from where we live and it was usually cold time we got it back home. It's partly one of the reasons why I started baking as there's nothing really decent for miles around. Even the nearest large supermarket is 20 miles away... But I can now make a decent pizza, and can cook some Chinese food now too.
Well Mick i was as surprised to see you bake as i did when i found out Zeke did on High School musical. You just need to learn how to swear like Ramsey and bake a Crème Brulee then start a baking channel. Obviously don't stop making fix-it videos because i still got lots to learn, Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks John. You're probably gonna laugh but I've actually made creme brulee a few year ago. Even used real vanilla seeds and caramelized the sugar on the top 👍 I do sometimes swear a bit too, just not on camera 😂😂😂
nice he has the original metal transmission pack now nylon and that pin on the shaft for the crown in set , has no need to be hammered his is worn and bent and to much grease on planetary wisk drive and drive axle is bent all must be replaced was warranty service agent whirlpool kitchenaid fsp, this was the residential hobart
The low end Kitchen Aid mixers these days use cheap components built into a pot metal shell that looks like the original. But all it takes is one stiff batch of cookie dough to burn them right out. The higher end ones still seem to be good - but they're doing the brand no favors by selling the cheap ones.
I too started baking my own bread using an Argos bread maker,i also learned a hellavalot from John's channel. I use the bread maker just to mix the dough then i form my loaf shape and bake in a gas fan oven. The reason i do this is because i dont like the shape of the loaf when cooking in the bread maker. I took a loaf and some crusty rolls around to my Mum's last week, and now the crazy woman expects a fresh loaf every day . WHAT HAVE I DONE ?#*"@#!😂
Yes I like John's channel. It started because we were getting overrun with our chickens laying loads of eggs and I searched how to make quiches. I'd highly recommend John's quiches if you haven't tried them. Cheese and bacon are awesome! Lol @ your mum wanting fresh bread every day 😂😂😂
I have been doing a bit of baking. I've used the mixer a few times now for making cakes, and had a go at making tiramisu a few weeks back. It came out well. It was a chef jean pierre recipe 🙂 with booze. His video was quite entertaining and made me chuckle 😂😂
The Nylon cog is what's known as a Mechanical fuse, it's made to fail to reduce breakage, I've seen many in my career with a large well known office product/automation machine company. So when are the Subscribers coming over for you first cake? LMFIAO
😂😂😂Yes I was thinking it might have been used as a mechanical fuse as you call it. I've used it to make a wicked carrot cake which I'd highly recommend from cupcake Jemma's UA-cam channel. 🙂
that gear is not metal. it's just gray. I was wanting to see how to pull the field assembly, but you didn't pull the armature. There's a bearing and bushing in there need some loving. OR am I wrong?
oh. I didn't realize you were an expert on these. As opposed to the experts on here that have rebuilt hundreds of them and said KA never made a metal gear. They were always sacrificial. My apologies. And that machine isn't all that old. It's not Hobart. @@BuyitFixit

Possibly but more gears would add more cost, they basically used an electronic governor.
Thank you! Great vid! I have a Kitchenaid Mixer like. It's a 2018 year model. Just as tough, however I am sure it has the plastic cog. It's still going strong though.
Thanks commenting and hopefully your mixer lasts just as long.
As a de-greaser, try Elbow Grease (not joking). Available in squirty bottles in places like Home Bargains, B&M etc, or bigger bottles over the Internet. Shove your parts in that to soak, and they'll come out like new!!
Thanks for the tip Nina 🙂👍
@@michaelburns8073 😂😂😂😂
yes, they changed to the nylon gear as a weak point to protect the gear box. and as a side note, if you are replacing a stripped nylon gear, never buy an aftermarket one. get the oem part from kitchen aid or your going to be doing it again in a few weeks.
Now that is making me hungry. I will have to look ebay for a similar machine.
😂😂😂😂
I just bought the same one today at a thrift store .
Worm cog needs replacing ,
Bowl riser mechanism is punched and the speed arm won’t stay in the off position.
Nice 👍I hope you get it all up and running, they seem to very well built!
Thanks Ralph 👍
*(WHAT IS THAT WAILING I HEAR AT **21:08**!?)* 😮
Nice job.
Thanks 👍The noise is one of the cockerels (we live on a farm). Yes, sounds a good deal 🙂
Made me hungry for some garlic bread ...... You sure got your money's worth with that machine ...... You got it looking great and it's gonna last you a lifetime with that PM you put into it.... Take Care Mon Ami ....
Lol. Thanks Cajun 👍
be carefull with food grade grease over a very long time as an engineer I have seen component life reduced by upto 80% when using some types the old petroleum based greases can last a lifetime in many cases
Can you put a link to the parts you placed please
Sure. This is the handle that I replaced www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111264405703
How do you align the machine so the attachments pass the dime test? I have this machine and there is not video on how to adjust this kind of mixer.
I can't recall seeing any adjustment on it. I did have the bowl arm assembly off to lubricate it slightly which is where I'd think the only adjustment could be, but can't remember seeing anything.
The wife made what we call garlic knots in the States. They are not made to last and even you cant correct that.
😂😂😂😂👍
Are you on Just Eat or Deliveroo Mick?
😂😂😂Funny you should say that.. we do actually have a just eat bag that a friend got for us, because any decent takeaway is about 30 or 40 mins drive from where we live and it was usually cold time we got it back home. It's partly one of the reasons why I started baking as there's nothing really decent for miles around. Even the nearest large supermarket is 20 miles away... But I can now make a decent pizza, and can cook some Chinese food now too.
@@BuyitFixit I love Chinese, I'll keep an eye out for my invite next time 😉
12:43 the forbidden butterscotch pudding.
I like butterscotch, but I wouldn't fancy tasting that 😂😂😂
Well Mick i was as surprised to see you bake as i did when i found out Zeke did on High School musical.

Interesting, Thanks for sharing 👍
That poor bloody cockerel sounds like it's got covid!! 😯😯😯😯😯👍👍👍🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Lol @ your mum wanting fresh bread every day 😂😂😂
Vintage kitchen Aid. Service. and. Repair.
why that much greese ?
I just replaced with a similar amount to what was there originally. I'm not too sure why that amount.
They don't make things to last long these days and most things they make now if it brakes you can't fix them its a case of bin it and buy a new one.
Exactly that! Totally agree Steve 👍
Just looked up the name that was stuck on the mixer and it could've belonged to a 'famous' chef
Good thinking Jason! I didn't think of that 👍
Now, now, are you going to let go of your repair channel for a cooking channel?? 😁😁
I have been doing a bit of baking. I've used the mixer a few times now for making cakes, and had a go at making tiramisu a few weeks back. It came out well. It was a chef jean pierre recipe 🙂 with booze. His video was quite entertaining and made me chuckle 😂😂
wire 😁
Yeah luckily you can put it in still after assembling the two halves 😂😂👍
these days everythings rubbish, are we moving backwards
Yep agree, quality workmanship has been substituted for low quality and cheapness.
I'll be right over, lol Great channel you're a man after my own heart. Fix it don't throw it out.@@BuyitFixit
that gear is not metal. it's just gray. I was wanting to see how to pull the field assembly, but you didn't pull the armature. There's a bearing and bushing in there need some loving. OR am I wrong?
The gear was definitely metal not plastic or nylon like on later models. I'm not sure about the bushings in the motor.
oh. I didn't realize you were an expert on these. As opposed to the experts on here that have rebuilt hundreds of them and said KA never made a metal gear. They were always sacrificial. My apologies. And that machine isn't all that old. It's not Hobart. @@BuyitFixit
