    When you remove and replace the gear worm take special notice how the bearings are situated. The flat side should be facing the side not the top. I noticed I had mine in the wrong way and had to fix it.

      The special pliers are called "snap ring pliers". Regardless of what kitchenaid calls the "gear worm", those are more commonly referred to as a worm gear

    Thank you for your video! My 12 year-old Kitchenaid Professional HD mixer (KG25H7X) was leaking "what seemed to be" oil - - which was actually a bit of breakdown of the lubricating food-grade grease originally applied by the manufacturer. Equipped with a Robertson screwdriver (square tip), snap-ring pliers, a few wood coffee-stirrers (popsicle sticks), a few shop towels and nitrile gloves. I followed your instructions to open-up the mixer, take the mother-board out of the way, remove the parts, clean them, apply new food-grade grease and put everything back together. While at it, I also replaced the gasket. Even though my mixer does not have a lot of wear, I was pleased to notice that the gears were all in top shape! By the way, the gasket part # is WP9709511, it is listed in some places as Whirlpool Genuine OEM WP9709511 Stand Mixer Transmission Case Gasket and in other places as Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer Transmission Case Gasket. All in all, I am truly happy to have done this by myself. Thank you "2 Guys & A Cooler !!!! (Christine - - Québec, Canada - - 2020-07-18)

    Wow, this video is so great! I had sent my mixer to KA for a factory repair and it didn't come back perfect. Turns out there were two other gears that needed to be replaced but I limped along with it long enough that I couldn't really send it back expecting them to take care of it so I tackled it myself. Thanks so so much! It's purring like a kitten now, not clunking along like an old beater any longer!

    Great video, thanks for sharing! It looks like your main vertical shaft is bent (I could see a wobble when you spun it by hand and when the mixer was running at the end). This could be adding additional strain to the gear, causing it to wear out faster. You may want to consider replacing it.

Didn't move, after removing three screws, I noticed a small pin had come off which keeps top wheel and bottom small aligned together. Pin was bent, is that how it is supposed to be. I really enjoyed your video. Our 500 Plus gearing still looks good after taking a look and redistributing the grease back towards the gears. We make dough and other heavy products in the 5.5 qt bowl, and IMO overloading the mixer is the problem. Reduce the recipe and do not overload the mixer to have years of good service. Otherwise I would recommend a Hobart commercial mixer.

    I’ve got one of these in my shop and the folks tried replacing the gear but they didn’t clean the case of the old contaminated grease and the metal fragments in the old grease caused the unit to sound like it was going to destroy itself, luckily it wasn’t run long. Not having the upper bearing in place also didn’t help either.

      Sorry, you only mentioned changing the motor and the board... Not sure what to tell you. A grinding sound is the gears not lining up properly. Perhaps tour main rod is slightly bent or the company you bought gears from might not be OEM. Maybe you have the wrong model gear. You should remove the gears and run the unit just to see if there's any weird wobble or noise that comes from it being turned on.. Hope that helps,

    Loved this video -- except the "gear worm flat notches facing up" 11:50-- this caused problems when I turned on the motor, and the housing wouldn't close tight... It wasn't until I watched a different video that they said the rounded part, flange, sticks up. So thankful! I couldn't figure out what the problem was. It's all good now. Why the discrepancy here?

    The retaining pliers linked in the description are not going to work. The tips are too big to fit in the holes in the retaining ring. I tried grinding them down but they just kept slipping. I got channel lock’s 927 8 inch retaining ring pliers. The looked a lot more like the ones used in the video. Only other issue was the shaft was much harder to remove and I had to use hammer to get the new gear on. But this is the first time I’ve changed any gears on it.

    I followed the steps but the machine was very loud. I took it apart and tried again. This time it is a little quiter but I hear a clicking sound. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I believe I might not be putting the worm gear back corrsctly but I am ensuring that the flat ends are up.

    • @2guysandacooler
      @2guysandacooler  5 років тому

      Hi Tam, It really hard to trouble shoot without looking at it but my guess is that if you hear clicking it's because the main gear (the long one) might be placed incorrectly. It may be loose or therefore its not fitting just perfectly in the space provided... If the other gears are on the rod and the pin has been put back in place to hold everything together then you will want to focus on the gear worm. This is the gear that has the ball bearing rings on either end. Sometimes its tricky to get on just right but look at the video again and check out the position of the brackets. Hope that helps. I cant wait to hear about how you have fixed your machine.

    It seems like there is too much wiggle room where the worm gear fits into the housing in my unit. This causes the gears to slip and strip out far too quickly. I just replaced gears and they are already slipping when my wife is making her bread dough. Has anyone else noticed this? I’m thinking about modifying the housing to hold the gear in place better. Not sure how yet. Might superglue a thin piece of metal in there.

    Great video, but I don’t have that tool you mentioned. My kitchenaid rotation part fell down while I was using it. I bought mine second hand :0( I had no idea it came damaged. I think is missing that little pin you put the very first time after you cleaned it up and started putting it back together. What brand oil you used? I’m so nervous to do it but I want to use my lovely kitchenaid.

      Hi Laura. I think you are absolutely right. That little pin holds everything in place while it's spinning. Should be an easy part to get. Here is where I but my replacement parts for my kitchenaid. www.ereplacementparts.com/shear-pin-retaining-pin-p-621981.html Be sure to check the model number on your unit to see if this part will work.. The little tool I have is this one: amzn.to/2NxWkDi it comes in real handy when removing those rings that secure the rod and the grease that I use is this amzn.to/2wtSHaT but you could use any food grade grease.
      It's a very easy machine to repair. If you have any questions you can always reach out..

    • @2guysandacooler
      @2guysandacooler  5 років тому

      That's a great question. Generally the teeth will not have sharp edges and you will see the center start to wear out. The symptom of gears getting worn out will be signs of skipping. If it's making lots of noise maybe it just needs a good cleaning... Remove all the grease and replace with new grease...

      Hello Lena, Not sure. It might be a motor issue. All the gears are made out of some sort of metal so you generally won't have any smoke coming from the gears but the motor if it starts to overhear and burn up might give you some smoke and melted plastic smell. just a thought.

      I don't think so. Just make sure you place the worm follower all the way down the shaft till the small hole is exposed. Then Place your pin back in the hole. Replace the gear that goes on top of the worm follower by lining it up correctly and finally your worm gear should be put back. Be sure to watch the video again as that particular gear ha to go in a certain way otherwise it doesn't fit perfectly. It should be a perfect fit once you are all done
