Echoing the sentiment of what a great forking video and how to this is...have been trying to take my mixer in for service for years and finally was like, I'm sure I can do this myself. Well, thanks to you, I can and did! Thank you!

Thank you! I have a 1995 K5SS. I've never serviced it, and I am the original owner. It just started squeaking and leaking last week, so I pulled it apart and ordered your grease and gasket kit. Amazingly, my gears were in great shape, but the grease was just starting to lose viscosity. I cleaned it up and changed the grease with the help of your videos. It now purrs lite a kitten! PS, I make double batches of sourdough in this thing! I can offer a little advice about putting the silver planetary ring back on. It did fight me for awhile. I noticed tiny marks on the inside of the ring that correspond to little "bumps" on the mixer head. I filed a little of the paint off the bumps, then lined up the bumps and the marks. Turning the mixer on its head also helped. I was able to easily tap the ring back on, and it is still tight to the mixer head. Hope this helps someone out.
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge, and videos, I took my K5SS apart, followed all your videos, and put it back together, runs like a charm, thank you again.
I did it! Took my old mixer apart, greased it, and -not to believe-was able to put the thing back together. Thanks Mr. Mixer. You are a fine instructor.

excellent videos on the K5SS- really helped me tremendously. also, the last part where the pin is inserted, did not work out so well, as the shaft needed to go up not down, i winded up putting that last part on before attaching the unit to the base. Could not have done this without your help. Cmon Bounty--- sign them up! (went through a lot of bounty)
Great videos and good quality products. I replaced a broken worm gear following the videos, used his factory gears not cheap Amazon and re-greased the unit. Runs and sounds like new. Thank you very much!
I followed all directions in all 3 videos for cleaning/regreasing my K5SS mixer. All went well. However, now it won't turn on and was working ok albeit noisy prior to servicing. I triple checked and all power lines in the back of the mixer are intact, not pinched, and hooked up. I am at a loss but really need to figure out what is going on. Please feel free to PM me as I am not on the communication services listed below your video. Thank you very much.
Thanks for such a great tutorial, I used this to replace a stripped worm gear and do a re-grease while I was at it. One thing I wondered, is there no need to grease the shafts?
I could not agree more with EigenvectorSeven. Just finished re-greasing our mixer, nothing was wrong with it, just way old, ~31 years, but still working and all metal gears. Without your tutorial, I'm not sure how it would have ended up! Mr. Mixer, any wisdom as to how often one should perform a re-greasing?
@@RED-if5xx for maximum efficiency, we reccomend a regrease and a tune of the speed plate every 1-2 years depending on how heavily it's used and how well you like to maintain your equipment
Thanks for the great tutorials. Like another commenter my inherited mixer was manufactured by Hobart and has all metal gears, perhaps explaining why it runs like a monster after 40+ years and also why it is very noisy. It looked like the planetary gears had never been lubed and I hope it will run quieter after the relube takes effect. Maybe because it is so old I ended up using a gear puller to get the planetary component completely off when prying just wouldn't finish the job. The electric wire grommet on mine is nylon and was a bear to pry out of it's half leading to some concerns that I was going to rip the wiring apart in the other half while trying to get them separated.
Great set of videos, really informative. I was able to tear mine down, not to the extent you did as all my gears were still good. I had already ordered my grease on amazon though, it was 4 oz and it seemed to be more than enough. Hardest part was getting the pin out the first step. I definitely suggest having the hole punch tools or I don’t think it would have come out. Second was I had to use a channel locks to loosen the stand nuts. None of my screw drivers were big enough and I was afraid of stripping them. Thanks again!
Thank you for your videos! I have a KA stand mixer that I have had better than 10 years, used lightly, but never knew to care for it in this way. Your eye for detail has me thinking that I can do this! I have noticed that the tilt head now bounces up and down A LOT even if run with no dough load, so I am concerned what that might mean. What might that be? I would guess that should be addressed before the cleaning and degreasing, so as not to have to do it twice.
Thanks for these videos, such a great resource to have! I have just purchased an early 1970s K5-A, which is mechanically in great shape but needs a good service. There seems to be very little in terms of parts distributors over here in the UK though unfortunately. At 14:50 you mention about the metal swarf that can appear in the planetary pin hole. Is this something to be concerned about, and what is the likely origin of this? I have the same but can't seem to track down where it has come from. Thanks again.
Ever had a situation, where after (works fine without the cap) you reattach the back “cap” (that has the 2 hooks and the single screw) that it starts making a “grinding” noise and if I fully tighten down the screw the motor continues to run but the planetary gear no longer spins ?
Amazing videos. Thanks. I want to unscrew the plenary gear and remove it to clean it. It's really nasty. The gear in my plenary is held in with a large flathead screw, but does want not to loosen. Is there a secret to remove the screw? Thanks again.
Sometimes that screw can be a pain, I generally use an adjustable wrench to hold the agitator shaft (the part that the beaters go up on) and get a wide blade screw driver. You may consider just a bit of wd40 on that screw and let it sit for a bit to penetrate and it should come off
Your instructions were perfect for guiding me through the process. My mixer was making grinding and squeaking sounds when I was using it and now it sounds great so far. I was surprised my gears were still in good shape when I took my mixer apart with the way it was sounding. I do have a question about my speeds though. I got the mixer from my mom after she passed and when I turn my speed from 8 to 10 I do not notice it going any faster or sounding any different. Is that normal or should there be a noticeable difference? If its not normal what would be a way to fix that?
Great video. We were able to grease our KP50P but are having trouble placing our planetary back on as the shaft moves up. Any other ideas how to keep the shaft from moving up? We've tried a strong magnet, but were not successful.
Hi Mr. Mixer! After watching the 3 part series, I’m looking to purchase a used K5SS - so I’m shopping around. Any tips on what to look out for? What are the chances that so long as it’s been tested, chances are a re-greasing should suffice before it’s ready to go for another 10 - 20 years? 🤞🏼
Hello, your video was very informative. Thanks for that.I replaced the complete pinion setup and re greased the entire mixer. It went together well but its still geary sounding. Almost like its coming from the planetary gear area. Wound you have any suggestions? Thank you..
@MrMixer316 well the "boss" just got home and said that the original noise was gone and it seems fine. So I guess all ended well! I must say I have done maintenance using videos on fishing reels and guns and your videos are the most descriptive and informative videos that I have seen. Great job putting them together. Thanks again..
What color green did you use to repaint this one? I just got a mixer that will not raise/lower. Do you have a repair video on what’s inside the stand? Th hanks again for another informative series.
This was actually a color they used to offer called hunter green I believe and I do have a video for the lift assembly! It should be in the k5ss series Playlist
Hi there! Happy New Year! I really appreciate your videos, they are awesome! I was in the process of re-greasing and reassembling and I broke the gasket. I ordered another from you, but also I can't get the the two parts to synch down without the gap. I can move the gear and it goes down some but not all the way. What do I need to do to get it to close the gap? Thanks so much in advance!
Thanks for a great video series. I noticed you didn't remove the gear with the snap ring on the planetary. Is it difficult to disassemble and reassemble this piece or simply not necessary to do this?
Hello, thank you very much for the tutorial. A question, how often should you change the blender from fat? again thank you very much Greetings from Colombia
Hi! I bought from your store and followed your videos, so thank you for all the help! Everything seemed to go smoothly until I turned it on at the end. It's making a squishing sound that I assume is from the grease. Is this something that will fix itself or should I go in and remove some? I did go back and check to be sure I didn't grease something that shouldn't be. Please help!
What if you put everything back together, no extra parts left & it doesn’t turn on?😮 No wires are pinched. One step I did miss in the disassembly was to detach the end of the power cord, where clips in the back. I need to go back & back make sure none of the connections came lose. Any other ideas? Question - what the black screw area on each side of the top of the machine? Thanks
Under the black screws are the carbon motor brushes, if you removed them, they can be inserted wrong which would result in no power! Check out our motor bush video!
@@MrMixer316 thanks so much my Internet has been out and I didn’t even have cell service so I am just getting your response. I’ll try it later on this afternoon because yes I did take those out! 🤦♀️
Great video Mr.Mixer please help me my kitchenaid continue spinning when I plug on even in the 0 level after I replace the worm gear I don’t know if I have mistaken to reassemble the pieces of the machine.
It definitely has something to do with the speed lever/speed control. Does the lever actually bump into speed 1 after you move it into the off position?
Watched all 3 parts about how to disassemble the Kitchen Aid mixer, clean it, and reassemble it. Think that I can do it now. Not sure how to connect with you to get the grease and possibly a new gear or two if needed. Can you send me the address and catalog of parts/prices for the K45SS Kitchen Aid/Hobart mixer to get the grease and possible gears that I might need, etc...? Thinking that I may just need the grease but will take a look at the mixer before ordering. Thanks.
When you're putting it back together, is the first gear you are doing the one you replaced? It looks different than it did before. Is that the one that looked bad in the taking it apart video?
It's likely because the materials used for the gears have changed over the years. The first one was likely black and it was nylon and the new yellow one is nylon/Kevlar blend
I picked up the K55 with two bowls and all mixing attachments on the side of the road, someone tossing it out. I followed your instructions, replaced the stripped worm gear, regressed, and calibrated the speed (per other video). AMAZING instructions! The motor sounds rough, especially in the lower gears. Any suggestions? Many thanks!
@@MrMixer316 that was literally what I did. I laughed the first 2 minutes of that video because it word for word predicted what I had done 🤣🤣 it's running now! Thanks!
Quick question do you have a video for how to remove the motor from this model or a pro 450. I am trying to repaint mine and I got stuck on that part, motor removal.😭
The K5SS was made when Hobart owned KitchenAid. This, I believe, is actually a KSM5 made some time back in the late 1980s. It's still a Hobart design, though.
Yes the k5ss was released in 1978 there are many various models that go by different names but have the exact same body style, motor and drive system. Hobart sold to whirlpool in 1986. I refer to all solid state models in this style as the K5SS as they are identical
@@MrMixer316 thanks! Internals would be the same for greasing and putting back together? The KSA isn't a solid state. Not sure what exactly that means though.
I use Superlube Multi-purpose synthetic food grade grease.. its cheaper then the wirlpool stuff and the mixer always sounds happy when im done. 14oz for like $20 CAD
I have an old kitchen aid pro, it sat for a VERY long time. It worked but it made a smell, so I changed the grease and reassembled it. Not it makes a noise, i took it all apart again just make sure everything was lined up etc and put it back together. On slow it almost sounds like a little dirt bike idling. Any thoughts on what is causing this?
Hi Mr. Mixer, I need some help! I followed your directions exactly as shown. I put the whole thing back together and the shaft is moving up and down about a half an inch. Now when I use the mixer, the planetary slides down when I run the mixer. Any idea on what I did wrong? I took it back apart and still can push down on the shaft a little. Can't seem to have it lock
What happened at 16:13 that you cut out of the video? I can't get the pin hole exactly aligned through the planetary and the shaft and just working a nail into that space isn't working. I'm afraid to just keep trying to brute force it and damage it.
i am in need of some parts for my 600 professional kitchenAid how do i order from you, it is a kp26m1xxnp model ,i know i will need the grease and a hub cover and i am going to need some attachments if you have any of those, thank you for your videos they are awsome.
As for the hub cover, I don't carry them at this time, sometimes however when they break loose they damage the housing causing them to not seat properly, sometimes they require a new upper housing or an adhesive to stick it into place. Currently all I have for attachments are a flex edge beater
Hey Mr mixer, Do you sell any of the pins for this mixer? One of the ends broke off the pin that sits in the slots, so it is only being held in one slot. If you don’t sell, can you tell me where to buy? Thanks!
it doesnt actually spin, the shaft spins within it, however if you put a glob of grease in there it wont close up properly, it wouldnt hurt to put a small dab on the upper portion of the shaft!
Hello! So i did exactly the same b cuz my mixer stopped turning so i exchanged the little turning thing that wore off, i dnt know the name 😂 but now it does not turn on 🥺 what could i have done wrong?
After about an hour, I still cannot get the 2 halves together. turning the gear doesn't do it. There is about a one half inch gap. Its very cumbersome as the electric cord stays attached. ok I found my mistake, its all back together, but when i plug in it runs, but the planetary does not turn? Thanks for any help.

@@MrMixer316I don't want you to pay me at all. Maybe a discount on a refurbished one but again not necessary. I just need to know how to get it to you. I didn't just want to throw it away.
How do I get it to you?! Happy Memorial Day!!!
Great series! I must saw that on that tower, the shaft, bushings and the washers were dry! You should be dabbing a little grease there on reassembly
excellent videos on the K5SS- really helped me tremendously.
also, the last part where the pin is inserted, did not work out so well, as the shaft needed to go up not down,
i winded up putting that last part on before attaching the unit to the base. Could not have done this without your help.
Cmon Bounty--- sign them up! (went through a lot of bounty)
😂 It's a pleasure to be of service
Great videos and good quality products. I replaced a broken worm gear following the videos, used his factory gears not cheap Amazon and re-greased the unit. Runs and sounds like new. Thank you very much!
So happy to help ❤️
I followed all directions in all 3 videos for cleaning/regreasing my K5SS mixer. All went well. However, now it won't turn on and was working ok albeit noisy prior to servicing. I triple checked and all power lines in the back of the mixer are intact, not pinched, and hooked up. I am at a loss but really need to figure out what is going on. Please feel free to PM me as I am not on the communication services listed below your video. Thank you very much.
It was a great help!!
Thanks for such a great tutorial, I used this to replace a stripped worm gear and do a re-grease while I was at it. One thing I wondered, is there no need to grease the shafts?
It couldn't hurt, I generally do must have missed it in the filming process
I could not agree more with EigenvectorSeven. Just finished re-greasing our mixer, nothing was wrong with it, just way old, ~31 years, but still working and all metal gears. Without your tutorial, I'm not sure how it would have ended up! Mr. Mixer, any wisdom as to how often one should perform a re-greasing?
@@RED-if5xx for maximum efficiency, we reccomend a regrease and a tune of the speed plate every 1-2 years depending on how heavily it's used and how well you like to maintain your equipment
This was an amazing tutorial! Thank you!!
Great video. Any idea how to keep the shaft from moving up when placing the planetary back on?
Push up and twist fast then pull the slack out and repeat until you can get a nail or tiny screw driver into the pin hole and pry it into place
Great videos and thank you for the quick turnaround on my order!
Our pleasure!

Great videos! Can you direct me to where I can get the grease and possibly the gears if worn? Thanks.
Here is a link to the grease and gasket! Gears are on our website as well! www.mrmixer.store/store-2den3/p/gid2z7irohaouqfax414780saa90zc
Did anyone else hear him mutter god damn it trying to get that last pin back in? Lol
😂😂
Thanks for these videos, such a great resource to have! I have just purchased an early 1970s K5-A, which is mechanically in great shape but needs a good service. There seems to be very little in terms of parts distributors over here in the UK though unfortunately.
At 14:50 you mention about the metal swarf that can appear in the planetary pin hole. Is this something to be concerned about, and what is the likely origin of this? I have the same but can't seem to track down where it has come from.
Thanks again.
Great step-by-step tutorial.
You may consider just a bit of wd40 on that screw and let it sit for a bit to penetrate and it should come off
@@MrMixer316 Thanks, I'll try that. After cleaning the gear, should I heavily grease the gear, lightly?
Your instructions were perfect for guiding me through the process. My mixer was making grinding and squeaking sounds when I was using it and now it sounds great so far. I was surprised my gears were still in good shape when I took my mixer apart with the way it was sounding. I do have a question about my speeds though. I got the mixer from my mom after she passed and when I turn my speed from 8 to 10 I do not notice it going any faster or sounding any different. Is that normal or should there be a noticeable difference? If its not normal what would be a way to fix that?
There should be a difference in each speed! We have a tuning your mixers speed video!
@@MrMixer316 Thank you, I am watching now. Your awesome!!
Chances are good! We have a few for sale as well, they are a tad pricey but they are basically restored to new!
Hello, your video was very informative. Thanks for that.I replaced the complete pinion setup and re greased the entire mixer. It went together well but its still geary sounding. Almost like its coming from the planetary gear area. Wound you have any suggestions? Thank you..
I'd be suspecting the bearing bracket especially if it's a low growl sound that goes away as the speed increases
@@MrMixer316 thank you.
Thank you so much! A fabulous tutorial!!
Happy to help!
Hi,
very useful video, can you suggest the food-grade grease for one of our machines. this is for Chains and sprockets.
How much do you need? We offer small tubs on our web site
Awesome instruction THANK YOU!
❤️ Happy to help!!
Can you show how to adjust the bowl to paddle clearance with machines that dont have the adjustment screw?
A question, how often should you change the blender from fat?
again thank you very much
Greetings from Colombia
We reccomend every 2 years for a grease and tune!
Outstanding. Thank you.
Yes that's the grease redistributing it will go away shortly!
Mine did the same. I let it run for a few minutes and the sound went away.
My husband loosen the screw inside now the level 10 stop the machine but it jump to level 9
Try replacing the motor brushes?
Is the KSM55 similar? I just bought it new and shouldn't have to worry for a few years. Just curious when I do the maintenance.
Any thoughts on why my machine isn't turning on after following all your steps carefully?
Did you remove the carbon motor Brushes? They can be installed wrong! Check out our carbon motor brush video
@@MrMixer316 that was literally what I did. I laughed the first 2 minutes of that video because it word for word predicted what I had done 🤣🤣 it's running now! Thanks!
@@lindsaymarie4416 happy to help 😁
Quick question do you have a video for how to remove the motor from this model or a pro 450. I am trying to repaint mine and I got stuck on that part, motor removal.😭
The K5SS was made when Hobart owned KitchenAid. This, I believe, is actually a KSM5 made some time back in the late 1980s. It's still a Hobart design, though.
Yes the k5ss was released in 1978 there are many various models that go by different names but have the exact same body style, motor and drive system. Hobart sold to whirlpool in 1986. I refer to all solid state models in this style as the K5SS as they are identical
Are the steps the same for a KS-A Hobart Kitchen Aid? Do you have any videos for that model? Great videos!
Yes the K5a is the exact same body style
I'm upgrading my K5ss to a 3 prong cord. Where do you recommend attaching the ground?
So I have 2 machines I need to regrease. Should I get two containers of grease?
Hi Mr. Mixer,
I need some help!
Figured it out. Apparently the K5-A has two holes in the shaft and had it in the wrong one
What happened at 16:13 that you cut out of the video? I can't get the pin hole exactly aligned through the planetary and the shaft and just working a nail into that space isn't working. I'm afraid to just keep trying to brute force it and damage it.
Hi from Denmark, do you ship to Denmark?
Great tutorial. thanks
Hello!!thank you so much! We do ship to Denmark
My gear shafts are discolored like the ones on this video. Would it be useful or advisable to polich them on a buffing wheel with polishing compound?
I don't think it would be overly beneficial but there's nothing saying you can't do it!
i am in need of some parts for my 600 professional kitchenAid how do i order from you, it is a kp26m1xxnp model ,i know i will need the grease and a hub cover and i am going to need some attachments if you have any of those, thank you for your videos they are awsome.
You arr very welcome! Grease and gasket can be purchased here www.mrmixer.store/store/p/grease-and-gasket-professional-series-bowl-raise-models
Thanks!
If it takes that much force to get it in, how much force does it take to get it out?
My k5ss shakes a lot will the regreasing eliminate that or are there other procedures I need to follow?
Shoot us an email at mrmixer316@gmail.com and we can get you some info!
Why do you not grease the top bearing in the upper cover , that is also spinning ?
it doesnt actually spin, the shaft spins within it, however if you put a glob of grease in there it wont close up properly, it wouldnt hurt to put a small dab on the upper portion of the shaft!
What grease do you recommend? I seen some people say use the kitchen aid one.
