Oz, Shad's 100% right. Romantic relationships are all about putting the other person first. If you're not married, you can end the relationship because you don't want to put them first. But you can't stay in it and put yourself first or end it for another option and then come slinking back when that option stops being available. If I were Rand, I would have never taken her back.

@@HunterGargoyle I haven't seen the show, but in the book at least, it's heavily implied that Aes Sedai don't often get married. This isn't the case as much with Egwene, who always wanted to be Green Ajah, but the tension increases by the end with the Rand reveal. That's where their relationship actually has issues, not when Egwene starts to work toward being an Aes Sedai.

In the books, Moiraine wasn’t injured and so they were able to safely enter Shadar Logath because she could put up wards against the evil there; they were forced out because the fade drove the trollocs in after them, despite their predictions.
However, I actually kind of liked the added sense of desperation from Moiraine’s deteriorating state driving Lan’s decision; this show has made very few good writing decisions, but I might list this as one of them.

Ishamael drove the myrddraal and trollocs in to Shadar Logoth. That is why it was unexpected. In the book the boys hid their dreaming of Ba'alzamon, Ishamael, from Moiraine. This led to multiple problems through the first book. These writers are screwing the whole thing up. They wanted to make the next GoT but they forgot that GoT held true to the books for the first few seasons which is why it became popular.

Chopping off Aes Sedai's hands might actually have some merit, because while it doesn't stop them from Weaving, it would be a hindrance for most Tower trained women. The pattern of the threads themselves remain the same for spells, but how you cast them (in regards to visualization of how to weave them together) very much depends on who taught you.
I forgot which book it was from, but in a battle where Aes Sedai were fighting alongside the Kin, it was pointed out that the Kin were significantly faster at launching fireballs towards Darkspawn because the Aes Sedai went through the motions of using their hands to gather up and throw the fireballs at the enemy. The Kin however just stood with their hands at their side or clasped in front of them and launched fireballs as fast as they could make the weaves.

@@RIDOLF01 I know what he did in the books. I also know that the Rand-Egwene relationship was still a possible thing really until Rand slept with Aviendha in Fires of Heaven. They'd already begun to drift as early as the Great Hunt when Aram attempted to seduce Egwene while Lanfear (as Selene) tried to seduce Rand. Then later in the Dragon Reborn, Egwene's focuses her emotions and strength of willpower around Gawyn (for some very strange reason) and begins to question her feelings for him during her time as a damane. The Rand-Elayne relationship starts in the Dragon Reborn, but petty issues almost destroy it. Further along these lines, in Shadow Rising, the Rand-Min relationship begins to blossom.
In other words, at this point in the books, Rand and Egwene were still a couple and acted as such. In the show, they've already broken up. Since we did not see Rand actively spying on Egwene and Moiraine (and no mention of it has been made thus far), we cannot simply assume that he was out there to do so. The reason he spied on them in the books was out of concern for Egwene. And let's not forget that the ONLY one of their group who went 100% willingly with Moiriane and Lan was Egwene. Rand, Mat, and Perrin all protested and tried to remain in Emmond's Field. Even Nynaeve only began tracking them in order to bring the kids (who she felt had been kidnapped and were in danger) back home. From the very start, Rand and Mat were suspicious of Moiraine's intentions. Which were only intensified by Thom's presence (which has also been changed in the show).

@@Unlitedsoul Rand and Elayne's relationship started in EotW when they fell in love at first sight, or in tSr, when they actually started spending time together, not in The Dragon Reborn. Egwene did not focus on Gawyn at all in that book either. She had a dream about him in tFoH, and then saw in his dreams that he was in love with her in LoC, and fell for him. Nothing in tDR. Aram attempted to seduce Egwene in EotW long before Rand ever met Selene, in the following book, tGH. Petty issues never threatened Rand & Elayne's relationship, she was annoyed at his reaction to her departure but neither of their feelings changed. Their mutual behavior on their parting left each one concerned that the other did not love them back, but nothing was destroyed. Even while falling in love with another woman and eventually sleeping with her, Elayne was on Rand's mind, and even when he proposed to the other girl, he had reservations, because of his feelings for Elayne. Elayne never once contemplated breaking up with Rand, she was all in, all about him, from her first PoV chapter, and clearly into him well before that. Rand and Min never interacted in Shadow Rising, let alone have a relationship that began to blossom.
Rand and Egwene's relationship status was a lot more ambiguous in the books. There were strong feelings and an assumption that they would eventually marry, but no formal relationship or commitment. In their first conversation in the books, they are clashing over issues of her career and aspirations. Min tells Rand early in the book that they won't end up together and by the end of the book, Rand has accepted that. During the book, Egwene is very receptive to Aram's flirtations, and ignores her hosts and Perrin to spend all her time dancing with him. When a farmer's daughter starts hitting on Rand on his journey, his relationship with Egwene never crosses his mind, his primary concern is that the girl might get him in trouble with her family. Throughout the series, aside from some hugs for comfort, Rand and Egwene never even have any physical interactions. They never kiss, until she gives him a good bye kiss on the cheek after they finally have the talk confirming that both of them have checked out of the relationship a long time ago, and have both taken for granted that they will never be anything more to each other.
Later on, Egwene refers to their relationship as "thinking" she loved him. A good argument can be made, I believe that she pursued a relationship with him, basically calling "dibs" among the women of the village at a young age, because his family was one of the rare ones in the Two Rivers with no women. By marrying Rand, Egwene would instantly become the female head of the household, and all the decisions, choices and activities that were considered female stuff would be under her control and authority, and she would no longer have to answer to any other women. If she married almost any other Two Rivers man, either he would move into the inn to help her parents, and she would still be under her mother and her big sisters, or she would move into his house, with his extended family, and basically be the new girl in the household, having to answer to her mother-in-law and all the other women who had grown up in the family, or married into it long ago and have their places established.
Egwene hates to be second fiddle or be considered lower-ranking or having to obey orders. When she tells Rand she is studying under Nynaeve to be a Wisdom, he laughs at her, because Wisdom is a job for life, and Nynaeve is only 24. Rand knows that Egwene would never be content serving the village without getting power in return, much less serving under another's authority for years. And Egwene proves him right with her career plan, which is to leave the village and find a place that prefers to appoint as Wisdom an outsider without any established relationships among the community. Rand knows and Egwene can't deny this trait about her. She is petty and defiant towards absolutely every authority figure she encounters through the series, unless they are actually giving her something she wants, and even most of them, she goes behind their backs or disobeys in some fashion. Even when she is playing a role to further her own power, she can barely control her outrage and frustration at pretending to be subservient or lesser than her rivals. For Egwene, being in charge, or able to do what she wants without answering to anyone else is of primary importance, so that, I think, was what governed her choice of husband - a living situation where she would not have to answer to any other woman (that they lived the farthest away from the village, and the Wisdom, Woman's Circle and her mom, probably helped a lot, too).
In the series, Egwene goes from telling Rand "I don't care" and hugging him when they learn he can channel, to, one book later, telling Min that he is an unsuitable partner. Why? What changed? Rand had just been proclaimed as the Dragon Reborn. He leveled up past Egwene, and that she could not accept in a partner. Thereafter, while she is concerned about him, she never thinks of him as her love interest. When she realizes that Elayne is thinking about sharing him her thought in reaction is "he's not for either of us." Rand is too powerful to be a good boyfriend, in her eyes. It is only the prospect of Berelain, a drop dead sexy woman and ruler in her own right, pursuing Rand, that makes Egwene give in and help Elayne pursue her interest.

What the writers of this subpar adaptation are doing is trying to make "magic" weaker so they can save money later in production. They are doing it deliberately and finding excuses in the books for it. In point of fact by how much they are cutting out, the Aeil Wise Ones, the Seanchan daemane, and the Wind Finders will likely be skipped over. If I don't miss my guess they will likely not even have those races save for a slim chance of the Aeil to explane where Rand comes from.

It all depends on the Aes Sedai in question and who trained them. Many Aes Sedai can tell who was trained by who based on the gestures they make for certain weaves. So one could do the same weave with a gesture or without. According to the Wise Ones it’s how they learn the weave that is important. If a woman learned a weave with a gesture it is almost impossible for them to learn to do the same weave without the gesture after.

No, ALL of them can weave the power without their hands.
However, SOME of the weaves they use with their hands, and because they always use their hands the power requires it now. It's a matter of they BELIEVE they need their hands but they really don't. That's just how they were taught so that's how they learn.
The ONLY things this applies to, are SPECIFIC weaves such as a fireball. Channelers, can just MAKE fireballs out of thin air and machine gun them at people. That's something the power can do. Aes Sedai however, LEARN fireballs by PHYSICALLY throwing their hands out to visualize throwing a fireball, so because that's how they learned it now they NEED it or they'd need to first UNlearn it. Old habits and all that.
Aes Sedai DO NOT go around waving their hands about like they're directed by Shyamalan in order to shield people or to float something on a thread of air, that just HAPPENS.
They use their hands to throw fireballs, and maybe one or two other kinds of weaves. It's like training wheels that they never figured out how to remove. OTHER channelers may have learned DIFFERENTLY so they don't use their hands at all, they don't have training wheels in the first place.
Regardless, there isn't an aes sedai in the SERIES that couldn't get out of being BURNED AT THE STAKE just because "oh i've not got me hands, I'm helpless now". She can't THROW FIREBALLS...... that is it, she can still do everything else. This is a DETRIMENTAL change to the series if that's how it works.

19:10 The ferryman dying in the show was clearly done just to make the discussion between Egwene and Moiraine turn naturally to the topic of the Three Oaths of the Aes Sedai.
It was a bit of an idiot ball, and in the book the ferryman, Master Hightower, actually doesn't die, he just watches as his ferry gets crushed by the whirlpool. In the book it's also not made explicit that it was Moiraine who created this "unfortunate occurrence" - it was definitely implied, but there was some ambiguity whether it was Moiraine or if it was one of those "freak occurrences" that became more commonplace later in the series, as the Dark One's prison weakened.
As for why Moiraine didn't save the guy in the show after he had jumped in after his ferry, the easiest justification is that she was injured and needed to conserve her strength.
By the way, this leads to an interesting conversation about the Three Oaths later in the episode, one of which is subtly different from the book Oaths.
The show version of the Oaths are:
One, to speak no word that is not true.
Two, to make no weapon with which one man may kill another.
Three, never to use the One Power as a weapon except the last extreme defense of her life, the life of her Warder, or another Aes Sedai.
The third oath in the books is as follows: Never to use the one power as a weapon except *against* *Darkfriends* or Shadowspawn, or in the last extreme defense of her life, the life of her Warder, or another Aes Sedai.
So, in the books there is a provision that allows Aes Sedai to use the One Power as a weapon against not only Shadowspawn (trollocs, myrddraal and the like), but also Darkfriends, who are regular humans who serve the Dark One. The implication here is that with the book oath, if an Aes Sedai believes that someone is a Darkfriend, the oath will not prevent them from using the One Power as a weapon against them, while the show oath seems to preclude that, except under imminent threat to their life, their Warder, or another Aes Sedai.
I guess using the One Power as a weapon against the Shadowspawn is taken for granted, but we'll have to see if the omission of Darkfriends has some consequences in the show. Maybe it doesn't matter, or maybe it's just a slip of the scriptwriter. But interesting nonetheless.

On the other hand she has this one ferryman dude which can not really help with her mission and bit of a bother at that. That said, leaving the ferryman to drown when he is presumably suffering from temporary insanity due to extreme emotional turmoil does make a definitive statement about the values her character uphold.

Unless you set off a chain reaction, kind of like burning stuff or causing floods or something that have secondary effects that linger, once you stop channeling, the weaves dissipate and the effect disappears. But I think Adam was pointing out that you can't use the term "cancel weaves" and then moved on to the concept of tying the weaves and unraveling them. So, some weaves create an effect that doesn't immediately fade when the weaving stops. And, in the book and in the show, she's getting pretty tired at that point, but hiding it pretty well from the group.
The opening really bothers me, because they can also do stuff with individual strands of the power, like cut her ropes with a strand of fire, scatter the burning wood with air, kill with fire, air, or spirit. The only reason in the books that cutting off her hands could stop her from doing anything at all would be if it makes her so distressed that she can't get in the frame of mind to embrace the Source.
The Whitecloaks and the camp replaced Baerlon and meeting Min (but she's a walking spoiler, lol).
I feel like they mixed Rand and Mat up a bit. Mat was more outspoken untrusting of Aes Sedai, while Rand was more quietly distrusting and always driven by responsibility.
I missed the big chase and running battle leading to Moraine deciding to make for Shadar Logoth in absolute desperation. Also the boys exploring together and meeting Mordeth was a big let down. Then there's the chaotic escape when the Myrdraal force the Trollocs into the city to search.
I guess they had to omit Bayle Domon since Thom wasn't with the boys yet, so they couldn't sell their services as gleeman's apprentices and a full gleeman. But it's a big hole to leave for one of the more important moderate minor characters.
Jumping slightly ahead, no Whitebridge? It's the characters' first introduction to a wonder from the Age of Legends.
The ferry man is a greedy bastard in the book that was going to try to rob them along with the lads that do the pulling for him, but stopped when he saw two swordsmen and an axe weilder in the group. And Moraine more than compensated him for the boat, and he complained about the lost fares until he could get the boat replaced.

@@thebeginningsend1 These comments are about Channelers fighting each other. So two people who can use the one power (magic). When channelers fight in the books, they tend to try to cut the other off from using magic. To do this they use a weave (spell) that is made from multiple elements, and is quite complex. So we are talking about how it's odd they use this time consuming weave, when a very simple and quick one, could do the same thing.

I've always equated "binding" to trying to lasso an angry snake and "shielding" as dropping a cargo net on a rampaging gorilla. Another point is that using a simple weave of air can be easily countered/nullified by an equally competent channeler either by cutting the binding weave or encasing their own hands in "bubbles" of air so that binding weaves can't actually restrict hand movement. (If I recall correctly, in one of the books a *cough* "dark friend" does exactly that to prevent being snared and caught.)

I want to point out that many people keep pointing out that it's "technically correct" that cutting off an Aes Sedai's hands would interfere with their weaves because most are trained to use them and it's also a mortal wound, but I think it's *very* important to note that of the many ways they control channelers in the books, cutting off their hands is never a thing they do. There's even a form of control that *incidentally* will cause hands to curl up/seize up sometimes, and it's never noted this would interfere with channeling directly. The obvious conclusion via omission is that cutting off an Aes Sedai's hands just wouldn't be all that effective. Very likely anyone who decided to do something genius like 'cut off Aes Sedai's hands, burn them at the stake' would find out that a sister in the absolute peak of distress and danger can still weave effectively enough to either protect themselves or suicide destroy everyone around them (as everyone around them is posing a mortal threat to them at that moment).

  • @carena586
    @carena586 2 роки тому +7

Not needing your hands to weave in the books isn't entirely true. While there is nothing about using The Power that inherently requires hands motions. (and when a certain character loses a hand they can still use The Power just fine) It is explicitly stated that the first way you learn a weave becomes your default and that learning another way can be nearly impossible. It is also stated that if you learn to do a weave with hand movements those movements become as integral to the weave as the flows themselves, and that most Aes Sadai would be unable to throw a fireball if they were unable to make some kind of throwing gesture with their hands.
So while, no, you don't need your hands to weave the power, an already exhausted Yellow Sister is unlikely to be able to do much to defend herself without them.

Even if they don't believe it, it would still be prudent to do it anyway, it costs nothing to try.
For me, the better explanation would be that they would think such a question was insulting.
Moiraine is clearly a noble by appearance, insulting random nobility in a foreign country, not always a great choice.
The show hasn't said this yet and I don't think it is much of a spoiler, but the white cloaks have no authority in Andor, IIRC they aren't allowed to do anything without a local lords permission.
This also leaves quite a big pothole with the burning of the AesSadai that is shown, since it would be very difficult for them to get permission for that.

If Moiraine wanted the ferryman dead she would simply have Lan kill him. Its made very clear in the books that the warders are in no way bound by the 3 oaths and that sometimes they handle things their Aes Sedai can't. I like that they're showing Moiraine is kind and empathetic to the villagers after the attack but singularly dedicated to her goals and she WILL let you die to save the world.

A fit person on foot can run down horses over a long enough distance. You just can't carry as much as the horsemen though. I think the Romans did this once to a horse tribe, but it cost them a big part of their army when the supplies ran out on the way back..

In the books the people who lived in the city that is now called shadarlogoth DID go out and fight in the troluc wars. The point of that plot point was that they took it too far they being kinda like the book white cloaks in their fanaticism. Where their battle cry or chant boiled down to “anything is acceptable in defense of the light. Where while Manetheran was a thorn in the dark ones foot. They where like the headman’s axe. Bringing up the idea or notion that how one fights the dark is just as import as fighting the dark one.
