I'm a leftie (not of the crazy SJW kind but the collective bargaining pro-union worker kind) and i completely agree with Shad & the boys here. I know you to be a fair minded person with integrity and principals and that matters MUCH more than whether you're right/left leaning, conservative or a woke hipster.
The creators of the show clearly dont respect the source material, Rafe Judkins, a self admitted feminist, said he would change the story in accordance to his feminist ideology and that is perhaps the worst kind of showrunner you can have. A person who thinks his politics and views should have a place in an ADAPTATION of someones elses work. It's narsissism of the highest order and it has completely infected Hollywood and the show producing eco-system.
Shad & the boys are one of the few that actually has proper critical analysis of the show VS the books compared to other prominent WOTloving youtubers i wont mention who will gladly disperse of their integrity and critical thinking in order to not stab the woke hornets nest.

I have to say as someone who is primarily a Christian and who disagrees with both political parties here and there, I really appreciate Shad calling this stuff out. I think entertainment needs to either be non-political or be fair in its representation of politics, as the typical stuff we see just breeds more division. Keep it up Shad
@@grotewobbo The issue with declaring yourself to one political side is that no side is always going to get it right in every case. Moderation is key to success but less and less people are able to extend a hand. The situation becomes increasingly frustrating when people on the extreme left call you rightwing, and people on the extreme right call you leftwing. Political discourse should never break down like this.

What people do not understand is that we are tired of Fantasy shows and movies being made it political messages. These are shows that are meant for an escape from reality as it implies in the genre name "Fantasy".
My ex wife and I were married for 5 and a half years. 1 and a half years after we got married her dad died of a hemorrhagic stroke. He was put on life support so we could come say our goodbyes. We were already planning on flying out the next month. We called Delta and got our tickets changed and then we were to fly out of Cody WY. It was winter time and our flights kept getting delayed. They set up 2 backups for us and then we missed our 2nd one by about 30 seconds. We could see the plane pulling away from the terminal. Anyways. My ex broke down crying and I wanted to cry and get peeved and upset but I knew I needed to keep it together and get things straightened out with the ladies at the counter. So I kept myself solid and probably looked unfeeling but I got stuff taken care of and kept myself together till we got to his hospital room that night. Then I broke down. What would have happened if I had broke down when I wanted to? We wouldn't have gotten where we needed to go. So ya. There is a time and a place to stay stoic and there is a time and a place to cry.

I had a similar expeience when my daughter was born premature. My wife and I had no one because we were in another province. I had to hold it all together... crying was not an option. More importantly, a solution.
Your wives are lucky you were there for them when they needed someone to be strong, someone they could lean on during such difficult times.
My dad was my rock. Sadly, he passed 5 years ago and I found myself single again a few months later. My wife got a brain tumor and was terrified at the idea of brain surgery. When we first found out, I made a couple jokes and acted like it was just a normal doctor's visit. People called me an ass for that for a long time, but I couldn't let my wife see my fear. She would've broken down knowing that I (the strong one) was scared.

@@straightjacket308 I don't blame you for not liking warframe, especially depending on what era of warframe you played warframe in. you can be many hours into the game and completely miss the good stuff or not know where to go. there are a lot of guides online here on youtube, but I think the game is ultimately suffering from scope creep; growing so big its crushing under its own weight. there's a lot of good stuff in the game. there's more warframe's to choose from than there has been US presidents. there's a ton of different weapons, companions, vehicles and mods and customization options for all aformentioned assets. However, that strength is also its weakness for the previously mentioned scope-creep reasoning. there's so much to do and acquire in this game and where's an even bigger expansion coming soon called "The New War" which is said to include several hours of new content in just the quest line which requires more commitment that the other quests haven't done before

Funnily the villain nearly always believes they're doing something right. People attacking criticism seem to fit right into that chasm forgetting to realize criticism is how everybody gets better at their jobs.
This is the same story for literally every IP that’s been woke-ified. There is a large online presence that attacks criticism in any form with strawman arguments, name-calling, censorship, and pretty much any tactic that avoids meaningful dialogue.

I'd rather read the books before watching the TV series so I don't know what this controversy is about, but I wanted to say something: Remember to LISTEN to EVERYONE, from start to end, before having a strong opinion on a topic. If you think someone's wrong you explain them why politely. If you're in a community where people and their opinions are being silenced, you're probably on the wrong community.
I typically lurk, but felt compelled to speak. I'm very left leaning (on legal, healthcare, and social safety net issues), and unlike Shad I'm mostly able to distance myself from the source (top 5 all time fantasy series) and enjoy the show as it's own project, even with the egregious changes, divorced from the source material. That said I am still a fan of the original material and have enjoyed every episode review precisely because Shad has been so objective in making valid critiques given his obvious love and bias toward the books. Would I rather watch Shad's version of the show? Definitely. Do I agree with Shad's politics? Not really, but he's been completely transparent about his frame of reference, and his insights as a published author and historian have been entertaining and informative. He hasn't said anything that's factually incorrect or disparaged any group of people. The SJW's took a wide swing and a miss here IMHO.
Youll be on our side in a year or two once the Overton window gets dragged further left by the radicals, and we’ll be happy to have you ^_^

I actually am the same, I can distance myself for this TV version out of the books. I actually started reading the books again, because of the show. I have enjoyed the show, it's not the book story and I can accept it for what it is and still enjoy it. My only fear is the amount of screaming ranting of the show not being the books leading to cancelation. If this show will not continue there will never be any kind of adaption for WOT to TV. Still having criticism, about the direction of the show is always valid and why I come to listen to these. I don't always agree on some points, but I can accept the other viewpoints for it.
@@thamor4746 Another point of view(mine), I would rather there not be an adaptation if the show runner has no intention of following the story from the books at all(and this show does not follow them at all). People say "just enjoy it because it is the only adaptation you will only get" but it isn't an adaptation. An adaptation would follow the lore/story while trimming down scenes/dialog for time purpose. This show has changed the baseline lore, changed all of the characters(they don't behave/do things that they would have in the book) and they have wholly written their own story with just some names inserted in there from the books. I would rather people just make their own original IP if they have no intention of actually using the source material. This is an opinion I have have had for several IP's that have gotten "adaptations", not just this one. The showrunner for Percy Jackson and the lightning thief was slightly more true to the books than the WOT, but it was still like the writer got high on acid and read the cliff notes of the first two books(the took something that was one paragraph and made it the focus of most of the first movie).
@@thamor4746 Never is a long time and the next person that wants to give it a try can pitch that the reason it failed was it deviated too far from the source material. The new version will succeed because it will be a more faithful adaptation. That may or may not be true, bit it's a pitch that may succeed at some future point even if this version falls apart.

It took centuries of human history, as far as we know, for it to become acceptable to think against the collective mind and even longer to make it alright to say it aloud. Denying everyone who happens to think differently, even marginally, from you that self made right exclusively on their preference over a piece of public entertainment is childishness.
I'm genuinely glad to see so many people consider things properly before falling in line behind one flagship opinion or its opposition, you three have gathered an outstanding fanbase. If I wasn't already subscribed I sure as hell would have been after the last two videos.

Just like what has happened to me in other comment sections: I talk about what is bad with the show, then they respond with how I am a horrible person. I'm critiquing the show, but they come after ME personally. When you say something about the show, and they can only respond with something about you, then you know they have no argument to stand on.

The 'Left' (for lack of a better word atm) apply very harsh labels at people like confetti at a parade. They have failed for years to realize that not everything is 'ist' or 'phobic' and the more they use these terms on people who clearly don't fit into those categories, the more watered down these labels become. The issue, from my experience is, they'll slap these labels on people at the drop of a hat and then once they are applied, it becomes justified by the rest of the tribe to ostracize the individual and all their opinions are immediately dismissed. They aren't interested in debate of ideas and don't want to engage in any meaningful way via discourse. It's more of a comply or be banned sub-culture.

As an aside I enjoyed hearing Shad’s political rant defending true political ideals. It’s difficult to find decent commentators on conservative policy that aren’t just focused on “owning the libs” other than Saagar from Breaking Points. Would be interested in hearing more constructive commentary or rants on Australian politics from Shad, Nathan, and Oz.
I'd love to see a Shad political podcast, but I know it would endanger his main channel, which I love, so I wouldn't want him to risk it on this platform.

This is where I come for takes on the WoT show. I don't even hate the show as much as I expected to - I was pleasantly surprised to find it mediocre instead of utterly terrible - but you guys give the best takes. You're balanced and honest. You're willing to point out where things are done well and willing to call out the mistakes, agendas, and poor writing.
Oz is a bit more strident, obviously, but I can see that he's a veteran of the meme wars and a more wary of the enemy and their twisted purpose.
I was there when Draft Our Daughters was incepted. I was there when CTR was doxxed. I was the only one cheering at work when Trump won. I fought in the Meme Wars and it changed me.

So I am so far left that the red in my veins is actually socialism. I also whole heartedly support the way society is moving towards accepting people and not ostracizing people because they are different. So from way over on the left, allow me to throw our hat (our hat obviously because the hat belongs to us all ;) ) into the proverbial ring in defence of these lads.
The comments and commentary made by the lads on the wheel of time are very fair and have been very fairly presented. As stated by their owns mouths many times, they are coming from a right wing, Mormon/Church of latter day Saints of Jesus Christ position. Lots of the views they express come from that experience. They (especially Oz) have also criticized the absurdities of "Wokeness" and it's role in the show's failings. There are far too many people who band wagon around "Wokeness" without actually holding any of the values it stemmed from. These people see other people talking about a group of Right wing Christians saying that "wokeness" has lead to the wheel of time being bad and they jump on this with full force and no thought. They assume without watching the actual video that the usual bigotry and misogyny so often associated with the right must be the core of what was said and that everything said is therefore invalid and must be attacked. Those that have gone as far to have watched the actual video are so blinded that they have to twist what they saw to fit the narrative they want to tell. This group of "woke" individuals are not by any means "woke". They are a vocal minority of opinionated, highly strung people who lash out at anything that they perceive to contradict their world view. Honestly the Gulag is too good for them. They only harm all of the positive societal change that as come and gives idiots from the other side of the fence a target to point to and say "if we don't stone the gays and keep women in their place, this is what you get!". So I completely reject any "woke" criticisms made as they just aren't valid here.
On the subject of the content of the content by the lads, I really agree with much of what they have pointed out. It's been great and I must admit to feeling quite silly at watching an hour of show and 2hours of ranting about a show. Given my own position, I do roll my eyes occasionally when they (especially Oz ;) ) go off on one about liberalism etc destoying the world but nonetheless I still completely agree with how they apply it to their comments about the show and I think that although they clearly bring their own backgrounds to their reviews, they still present a very fair and balanced assessment with all criticisms being backed with evidence. To the point about balance, I think Shad has done a great job of keeping them honest and objective and has clearly tried hard to be as neutral and objective as possible while still giving his opinion. And at the end of it all, they are three grown men dressed up in costumes ranting to their fans on a small corner of the internet. If you really don't like it, there is an infinite amount of other content out there and no one made you watch this.
I for one, love these videos and can't wait to see the next lot! At this point I've really given up any hope of the show being "good" in regards to the books and am just watching it vaguely follow them without getting too attached. It's already broke my heart. But that actually makes watching these rants even better because they make me realise, "Yeah, it was shit and they did fuck that up didn't they!". So thanks for they great commentary, Shad and Co. don't let the haters get to you :)
I agree with your sentiment on not ostracizing within society however I disagree that our current society is doing that as anyone paying attention knows that banning ppl and ostracizing differing opinions is widely popular against any who are right wing or critical of any gay trans or minority issue or climate and class issues. If anything I think this is worse today than at anytime in the past 40 years.
I subscribed to this channel because of what you guys have said. I was disgusted with all the shills who pretend the show is great. There are good ideas the writers lack the literary creativity to execute them.Thank you for voicing my feelings of this show. Keep up the good work.

I'm just asking because I've never really seen anyone complain about, say, military propaganda. Take the first Captain America movie. The way they cheer for the military in that movie is just unbearable, and I'd argue that military propaganda does a lot more harm than, say, have a woman that doesn't need to be saved by a guy.

To Shad's point about keeping emotions in check when a job needs to be done - I was watching the 4K restored Apollo moon landings a couple of years back, and remember when they reserved a brief moment for an emotional release (can't remember the exact name they gave it), allowing those on the ground to let it all out, yelling, clapping, cheering, etc. Once that moment was passed though, it was right back to work. No sobbing or dwelling on the magnificent achievement right then and there, it could be done later, as there was still an important job to be done. That's what those of us in the grown-up world like to call: Professionalism.
Sex is innately repulsive. If your not turned on by a sexual act. The default is revulsion. Think about it, shove a part of your body into the body of the most disgusting person you can think of. That's sex without attraction.

I've read many almost copy pasted replies in videos not only defending the show, which is okay, but accusing people who point problems as if they are "threatening the livelihoods of the people that worked on the series". As if saying you didn't like it will be the cause of someone being fired, and fair enough, it can be. But so what? Isn't that how it's supposed to be? It's good you receive praise, it's bad you get criticism. Some people take it too far, and that goes for both sides.
I'll say it here too. I hated the first chapter, liked the second, really liked the third, liked the fourth and now really dislike the fifth. That's how things go I believe. Maybe the problem is releasing it weekly?
The show is not horrible in my opinion, just very inconsistent and made choices that OBVIOUSLY made the book fans quite in doubt about the future of the series.
But if they develop Rand and Perrin enough by the end of the season, like really well, I believe it will redeem itself to me. That's literally all I'm asking at this point.

You're probably right in that people will interpret it that way. However, even if someone finds gay sex repulsive, as in the idea of someone else doing it, not yourself, that still wouldn't be a condemnation of gay people. Almost everyday I find things that people do on the internet that I either disagree with or even find to be outright repulsive and disgusting. That still doesn't mean I condemn them or think any less of them, it's just a thing I'm not into and wouldn't do.

Yeah, Shad has said he doesn't hate homosexual people. He doesn't find their way of life as repulsive and supports their decision. This is why I disagree so heavily with the "left vs right" dynamic. Everyone is different, with a range of views reflecting left and right. "Leftists" are the ones whose strongest views are considered left, and "righties" are the same but for the right. Centrists tend to be a bit more reasonable, with no especially strong views either way- this is what I consider myself. I have some very left views, some views that might be considered very right, but both sides of the argument... I look at it and think "you're all morons."

Been a long time since I read WoT, but one of the standout themes is how awful the matriarchal organizations/tribes are... They're antagonists as much as allies to the main characters.

I really appreciate your honest reviews and comments. I'm also following another book fan who is doing podcasts on WoT, channel is called Dagger for Sightblinder (I know those guys from the mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes). They have also been pretty fair in their criticisms, althought they are generally enjoying the show more than you guys, not that they are completely enjoying it.
And as for the political stuff, it's just like GanerGate, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who, Marvel, DC Comics......all over again.

Shad - In the US wages paid to employees are a business expense. That is better than a tax deduction as it reduces your profit and in the US since you are paying taxes only on business profit, you tax goes down. It would be double-dipping to have wages be both a business expense *and* a tax deduction
As a fan of the books, I can say with complete honesty that since the show runners are openly disrespecting Robert Jordan’s work and infecting it with their own political views and agendas, they destroy my faith in humanity. They’re the reason why our entire species is a giant evolutionary failure and it pisses me off! Keep your personal politics out of a work of literature that isn’t even yours to begin with!
If the show runners wanted to change so much and interject their own beliefs why not just create a new story in a different age? They could just label it as being set in the Wheel of Time's world. This way book fans would not be comparing it to the books and the newcomers would not care because they have nothing to compare it to.
Has anyone played Star wars Knights of the old Republic? that is a perfect example of how to create an interesting new story in an established setting without having to rewrite already established lore.
Because the show runners of WoT are like the guys behind Masters of the Universe, Picard, and a dozen other properties. They don’t want to make, remake, or continue anything, they want a skin suit for their politics to trick you into watching it.
Also they are too lazy to make something original most of the time. They managed it with Carnival Row, but it’s obvious from the nonsense of a plot and badly disguised reused sets the people running WoT don’t have the work ethic to create anything on their own

Because a central tenant of Marxism is you must destroy or subvert everything that stands for a pillar of society. As "progressive" as WoT is, at the end of the day it is a hugely popular and influential fantasy series with tens of millions of book copies sold. And one of its central themes is that there are binary genders, each separate with different strengths and different weaknesses, are not interchangeable, and thus have different roles in society. Worse for the marxist ideologue, for the survival of the world, for the salvation of humanity, for the defeat of evil, for the building of a better tomorrow, the two genders must join hands as equal players and as a team.
The leftist does not want this. They desire tearing down, not building. They want balkanization for control and manipulation, not a unified population that opposes them. They dont want equality, they want subjugation, of men especially, because when reality hits the road, men are the bigger threat to their designs.
You look at the r/Whitecloaks breakdown of their membership: it is like 94% white males. This is really why white males are so vilified, more than any other group, they are the ones who believe in objectivity, reality, principles, science, etc. And they are still willing to take a stand. Not that others don't as well, but the numbers speak for themselves.
Much easier to follow the plot points of an existing work than create an entirely new compellign story, especialyl when a lot of people would like a wheel of time adaptation. Creating soemthign entirely new in the wheel of time universe would be a little odd when there has not been a show yet showing the main story. At that point, theres no point even using wheel of time.

In WoT both traditional conservative ideologies and progressive ideologies exist - and both are right, at different times. The Aiel need to change, as do the Two Rivers, while the Cairheinen are slaves to their conservatism, and the Tinkers are lost and somewhat pointless except as ideologues. That said, the conservative values of the Two Rivers also somewhat save the world.
The type of leftist you are talking about has as much in common with normal progressives as the mouth-foaming, AR-wielding, fundamentalist-living in a commune and pissing in jars to avoid 'the gays' and 'satellite thought control' is to most normal conservatives.

A small study a few years ago with gay men found something similar. Wish I could track it down. Anecdotally, some gay celebrities like Stephen Fry have expressed at least some disgust regarding heterosexual sex.

So I just wanted to say that you Shad have convinced me to go and read the books. I already have all the books in Dutch I got them for free because of my job, but I think I'm going to buy them in English because I feel that would be the superior way of experiencing the story. I'm finishing up the witcher books right I'm now in baptism of fire the 5th book and I have 2 more to go not counting the prequel, once I'm done with those sets of books I'm going to read the wheel of time I'm looking forward to it.

1) Full support for you guys. Keep the watch, as you are doing it great.
2) The assessment of the show is different because your measure of quality is writing quality, and part of the audience's measure is how well it conveys [critical drinker mode on] THE MESSAGE. That's why arguments on why side are impossible to reach the other.
3) "Right" and "left" are simplification of the caliber which renders them almost completely useless, just another tribal label for populus to identify with. There is staggering similarity between the far-rightist and far-leftist on details of government. Where did the good old conservative liberalism go? Laissez-faire? Why are we dealing with absolutes, what are we, sith or what?
(Example: the nationalist-right junta that has taken over my country is - demonstrative "piety" aside - identical to the left communist which governed it before '89. Some are even the same people!)

Hugely agree with your criticisms so far. I have been a fan of this series since EotW was released and had been wishing for a screen adaptation since the 90's.
The changes they've made to the source material are all crap.
I am tempted to point out about 3 or 4 changes that I think were on a needs-must basis were pretty good decisions.

The gender conflicts in the book served two purposes:
1) to highlight the themes of Duality that, quite literally drive the world forward
And 2) to demonstrate how the subversion of that duality - through the tainting of the male half of the One Power- throws the whole of civilization off kilter.
One of the core messages of the book is that everyone has different aptitudes, all of which are necessary for bringing about the ultimate triumph, and that the friction between the characters and groups and factions can be harnessed to make everyone stronger in the end.
The show abandons this (more or less) balanced approach to worldbuilding and character development for a cheap rehash of modern gender propaganda: all of the men are reduced to weaklings, cowards, and brutes; while the women are nigh-infallible paragons of wit and wisdom. Nearly every change serves to either subvert the male characters or to enhance the female ones. And in the process, it has not only punched dozens of holes in the plot of the story, but it has undermined the core principles of Robert Jordan's entire work

I Don't watch your reviews (there like, an hour long, and i have a lot of stuff to do and things to watch)
But, from what i have watched, i know you to generally have reasonable criticism, and that you will generally acknowledge the good things as well as the bad.
Now, sometimes you are straight up wrong about things, and sometimes you are overly dismissive of things, but even so, i would trust your reviews, esspecially in conjunction with the helpful feedback from the comments, because even when you are wrong, it's in good faith, never trying to push an agenda.
Why Australian are so good at being unbiased news sources is beyond me.

I am also a big time lefty, WoT fan and I also agree with you guys. I love good stories, read tons, listen to books, and consume media. I don't think this is a woke agenda blue/red pill stuff - I can't buy into that much conspiracy. Occam's razor would suggest that the WoT adaptation is populated with crappy "writers". I put writers in quotes because RJ already wrote the material so they don't really have to write. We saw this in GOTs - seasons/episodes that stuck with the story that GRRM wrote were good - the rest not so much. I will also say with respect to WOT, the RJ books were *way* better than the books that Brandon finished.
The true scale is left, 100% govt control, the far right is no govt anarchy. all else is in between. I stopped buying into the system mentioned here because it cannot fit all govt systems. If left and right has tyranny- where does anarchy fit? Its all about govt control vs no govt. I myself am an old school constitutional republican- the govt belongs to the people and the govt exists to uphold peoples rights and provide limited services.
