I Didn't Know They Were THIS Woke!! | Rage Against the Machine "Bulls on Parade" Reaction

- Sitting down to react to another R.A.T.M.. song, "Bulls on Parade." We're just now watching this in 2022, and we had no idea they were THIS woke back then. We discuss the system, the agenda, and the dream of freedom presented in the song.
Rage Against the Machine had us doing EXACTLY what they intended for us to do - talk about issues.
We DEFINITELY rocked with this.

"They don't gotta burn the books they just remove 'em" ,,it's happening today ! RAGE was on point then and even more so today.
How can you see history books being pulled if they aren't changed and think, "yeah this is ok"?

A LOT of us were “woke” back then. We called it punk 😂

That scratching is the unique brilliance of Tom Morello on the guitar, very much sounds like scratching a record. Rage On!
Always pull up lyrics on the side for Rage. Zach spits a lot of truths and if you're not paying attention you'll miss em.
Except now he does it for corporate democrat fund raisers as tom morello writes puff pieces for the New york times I guess they just became Rage For The Machine or The Machine

THEY SOLD OUT , WAKE UP
@@wangchung2157 When I was poor and spoke out against the system, they called me jealous.
Now I am rich and speak out against the system, they call me a hypocrite.
really? what is tom morello doing now that's so woke?
he sold out to make like super traditional, super boring music after being one of the most innovative guitarists of all g'damn time.
the bassist where is he? collecting residuals?
good for him
zach, like he ain't doing things right necessarily, like he's been in and out of prison from what I've heard for his activism, but so he's keeping it "real" I guess
you know what? that's also why the band broke up
because of zach and his "realness"
so to you want to lament the ending of rage? or call people corporate schills? was zach to real for them? maybe
or maybe they just didn't want to sacrifice their life to send a message to people that weren't listening. Suburban white people bought most rage albums...you think they felt good about that? like the people they're speaking out against being their source of income?
we're talkijng about people here and people are rarely, if ever, just one thing
Man you guys got to get into their catalogue.. Zack spits fire and mad truth, he's a Militant Poet for the masses, I've been a Rager since 91, tho lyrics are a MUST when listening to Rage.. This songs about how the government and the system speaks Moral Family Values while making millions from war, the 5 sided fistagon is the Pentagon and the industrial military complex, also there's a double meaning(I grew up in the same area as Zack) back in the day in our hood bulls on parade meant the cops were coming, RATM is a history lesson every time... Next up has to be Wake up, down rodeo, take the power back, know your enemy... Rage on fellas🤘😎 you be surprised at Tom Morello and his guitar...

Great reaction, guys.
Funny-ish story; y’all mentioned that it would be valuable to introduce RATM at the beginning of a history class…
Well, I used to teach HS English and, while intro’ing a unit about racism, beginning with the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”-an objectively amazing book (albeit, one that takes a bit of ‘warming-up-to’ for 15/16YOs)-I always started this unit with relevant [big quotation marks here] “ Woke “ songs throughout (modern) history. Artists like, Nina Simone, Anti-Flag, Public Enemy, Kendrick Lamar, Bob Dylan, AND RATM-plus a ton of others-and I will tell you, my kids got WAAAY more out of the lessons by utilizing this strategy than they otherwise would have.
[Side Note-RATM was always very popular…especially post-2016…hmmm]
Keep on being awesome, guys.
That is really awesome. The people's champ!!! Thanks for yhe comment. I'm sure you inspired generations!!!

Ayyy even snuck in some Anti-Flag! That's amazing
What a great post. Thank you for this. Fistbump 🤜
Don't forget Black Star now!
"Know your enemy" is the one. The thesis. The best representation of RATM
LOVE that track
100% yes. An amazing bonus Easter egg for this song is played at the end credits of the movie "The Other Guys" where it shows statistics of government and financial corruption in the U.S.
Along with Down Rodeo and Wake Up, I would add.
Bullet in the head
Know your Enemy

Lyrics you need lyrics!!!!!!
Zack’s great grandfather was a Mexican revolutionary
Tom Morello is a Harvard grad, BA in poly-sci. All of their songs are political, mass incarceration, police brutality, poverty, government corruption, capitalism etc etc…..
Of course, RATM was way ahead of their time (either that or, sadly, things just haven't changed that much). Back in the day, I was a young white metalhead, and Rage helped me become aware of a lot of the discrimination that was happening around me that I was completely oblivious to. I was embarrassingly naive and ignorant to the real world, and I'm eternally grateful to bands like RATM for opening my eyes.
Things haven’t changed much. We just have camera phones and social media now. 😔
That was Tom morello on his guitar treating it like a turntable.
Please check out Down Rodeo, Wake Up and Know Your Enemy. Just a few from RATM that's required hearing! Great break down fellas!
I'd add take the power back to that list
This one is hard to dissect. I love all the theories. The chorus is talking about the hypocrisy of politicians who are pro-war and pro-family. They rally around family values, but have no problem with the military industrial complex. As far as the “bulls on parade” part, everyone has a different idea about that. Could be what you guys are talking about, or it could be a reference to a “bull market” in economics. Great reaction!
Knowing how well read ZDLR is and how his lyrics contain plenty of double entendre, it very well could mean all those things. Take Vietnow for example, the line "Check out the new style Ollie found" refers to both Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, the innovator of the Ollie (Zack grew up in Long Beach, CA, a hot spot for skateboarding since the 70s) and Oliver North, a conservative American political commentator and retired USMC Lt.Col. that had a radio show from 1995 to 2003.
The phrase “Bulls On Parade” refers to notifying/warning others when cops/soldiers are in the area and to be ready to defend yourselves
I think it's really prison culture. Dudes in prison call the guards cops and bulls. I assume anyone who calls a guard a cop been inside. The parade is when the bulls/cops walk the block. But that's just what learned on locked up raw. 😂😂😶
I always read it as a reference to Wall Street. When stocks are going up it's referred to as a bull market. Bulls on Parade are the capitalists that push for the US' never-ending wars around world and against the marginalized at home and manipulate the media to keep the public onboard.
Correct. It's like shouting "heads up, 5-0"
De, I completely feel you. When it comes to insurrection, that is not a tool that belongs to any one particular political ideology. Its basically an active pursuit of a revolution which generally means you're doing something physical. Showing up at a centralized location or multiple locations. Its holding signs, chanting the message and sometimes it turns into a bloody battle. Sometimes it does. When non-violent protest can't produce the change that the people are looking for, unfortunately it can dissolve into violence. We hate to see it go that way but it can. The powers that you guys are talking about in relation to this video and song are the powers that regular, working class people of ALL ideologies need to contend with. No matter which president you like better in the last 20 years or so, working class people are all in the same boat. We need to wake up to this reality. There has not been a presidential administration in my lifetime that has DEMONSTRATED that they are looking out for the protection of marginalized people or the totality of the non-wealthy class regardless of ethnicity or race. People need to realize that we are all contending with a political class establishment that provides for its own interest no matter who the president is at any given time.
Please react to “Down Rodeo” RATM with lyrics
I watch those reactions daily. It is my new favorite thing 🥶
I loved watching your Tool videos, as seeing someone get to appreciate that level of "Art Rock" for the first time is a True Gift and takes us back to our own reactions of being blown away by them for the first time.
Rage absolutely never misses. Tom Morello actually has an Honors Grad in political science from Harvard so you know this man is deeply connected to seeing the corruption and hypocrisy and Puppet Shows that take place to blind people.
The entire band is extremely aware and woke allot of people up to the illusions cast on them.
I have two other "modern" band suggestions I know you guys would absolutely love, first being almost a crossover between the Technical Proficiency of a Tool type band (although no one truly holds up to them since Yes) and that is
System of a Down
It's very likely you've heard in passing a track like Chop Suey, but literally any of their songs are incredible from every angle and the Duo of Lead Singers is quite unique and something I know would flabbergast you.
The other one is Avenged Sevenfold, which are true Metal, but in such an instrumentally delicious and savory way that the vibe will hit.
Again, hard to miss with any of their tracks.
Out of the classic bands you absolutely have to at some point do a Beatles & Pink Floyd reaction.
Beatles are interesting, because they went from pop band to Greatest of All Time over night due to Bob Dylan misinterpreting a lyric on Help and introducing them to Cannabis as the legend goes, so they actually started out as 'sellout' type music (although still absolutely brilliant musically) into some of the most technically proficient pieces in all of human history up there with Mozart & Co.
For them I'd recommend "I Want You" off Abbey Road or "Tomorrow Never Knows" off Revolver, the album that started the entire Rock & Roll arms race. The song sounds like it was made in the 2000's but was in 1967. When most dudes still had to wear suits on Stage.
Pink Floyd you again can't miss, understand they are fully Concept Albums and each song flows into the next, with The Wall being a full Rock Opera.. but listen to 'Time' or 'Money' off Darkside.
I guess finally as a caveat if you enjoy Pink Floyd you could throw on The Flaming Lips, which is the closest thing to that type of 'Space Rock' we have today. They blend Electronica with Rock very very well. "In the Morning of the Magicians" would be a good track to start with.
This song is about the military industrial complex in the United States and specifically the Republican party's role in propping it up.
Back in the '90s, they were the party of family values (before they went all in on porn star hush money payments and grabbing them by the p*ssy). They "rallied around the family" while pushing for war and greater military spending.
The second verse is really the crux of the song: "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal"
Basically, the Republicans won't spend money on social programs for those in need, but they will line the pockets of their military contractor donors.
What's really sad is that now both major political parties in America are from top to bottom owned by the military industrial complex. The Democrats now are very much like 90's Republicans. They pretend to care about 'their sides' social issues to get elected, but behind the schemes they're all lining their pockets with bribes
wow … your so wrong
@@jjpods5165 how so? That 's 100% what this song is about. "Rally round the family" is about political campaigns fronting with "Family values" while promoting violence at home and wars abroad - "feeding the war cannibal animal...."
The only thing I'd add is RATM didn't like both major parties, Republicans and Dems but the OP's general point is definitely spot on.
Both parties prop up the military industrial complex. You should listen to Malcolm X. Like him or not, we had no new wars under Trump. He shut down conflicts we were in all over the world. I know its an unpopular statement, but its true.
@@joetdf3478 Many Democrats are also involved in propping up the military industrial complex. There is no denying it. However, RATM seems to be focusing this song on the irony that the "family values" party funds "weapons not food".
And let's not pretend that both parties are equal on this front. Military spending always goes up significantly in a R administration, including Trump.
They badass dudes have been woke before wokeness was a thing. ✊ 🤜👈
He scratching with an electric guitar... dopest DJ ever
How had I never caught the bulls chasing their freedom reference before. Good catch, I like that
You can never react to too much RATM. Down Rodeo and Wake Up next. Pull up lyrics.
Next you should hit up their songs Freedom and Know Your Enemy. Zach is straight preachin' on those, man. CLASSICS.
Mic check lyrics- take the power back- viet now- all with lyrics
I was there in the 90s. We were revolutionary and had a purpose. But then we were infiltrated and made to be silent. Whatever we did, especially with race issues, was co-opted and shut down. So our only advice is to be true to yourself and make change in your own circle. One day our individual circles will form one big one.
Don’t hate your neighbor. We are being divided on purpose. So take your little corner, bring the revolution, and trust that one day soon we can all join and overthrow the tyrants.
They are on tour now in the US. You might want to check m out. Also react to “Down Rodeo”.
Their tickets are so expensive that anyone who actually listened to RATM growing up can't afford to see them. They are a hypocrites and sell outs.
@@DeathmetalPersian So true.
@@DeathmetalPersian Boohoo 🙄 So tired of hearing people whine about them making a living with their art. They were talking about money in politics and corporations. Not concert tickets.
@@SparkimusPrime when they wrote those songs they were playing small venues and back yard pop up shows. Poor people filled their crowds not the bourgeois they sang about who fills their crowds now. You don't know what you are talking about kid, go be a poser somewhere else and let the oldheads talk.
@@DeathmetalPersian I didn’t know pink pop and Woodstock were small venues lol. Also fyi, they have nothing to do worth tick we prices. It’s all venue owners and labels
Most of their songs are just bars and bars of truths and exposing injustice. Know Your Enemy, Down Rodeo etc. are super dope songs. If you decide to react to them, always pick a video with lyrics since the lyrics are super-important.
Note the symbolism with the protestors with red flags followed by the "bulls" (cops) charging. Like a matador/toro thing
"Bulls", a "bull market" and "bull runs" are also investor terms. Those are the big dogs that make millions off of pandemics, pharma companies and other "inconveniences" that they profit from poor people.
Zach is saying they display their wealth while others suffer.
If you think about it, even after all these years, this is still starting conversations. Keep on guys, you are doing great!
If y’all willing to get significantly outside your comfort zone, please listen to a few punk songs.
Dead Kennedys - “Police Truck” (1980) or “Riot” (1982)
Bad Religion - “American Jesus” (1993) and “I Want To Conquer The World” (1998)… or literally any of their songs
Death - “Let The World Turn” and “Politicians In My Eyes” (1975 both)
Maybe pull up lyrics
Edit: btw y’all got me subscribed with your first RAM reaction and here you are posting a second one. Good on you
Metal has ALWAYS touched on these issues. I have met alot of melonated people that think metal is racist, and it is actually very inclusive. It accepts all, and metal bands sing about this. We are a family. Metal is about cool concepts, but also about real life. Metal is love, my guys.
Tool and Rage, man. Both came out around the same time and went DEEEEEP.
No surprise that Maynard shows up in a Rage song.
Love that you guys aren’t afraid to dig in and start talking about stuff. Even at the end there, where it gets off topic but it opens the door for another important discussion. That’s important stuff.
Keep on spiraling out and seeking that truth. 🤘
I like how detailed you think about the track and it’s intentions, appreciate that! Do Know Your Enemy next if you do another Rage track please!
Check out "wake up", "down rodeo" and "guerilla radio". Show the whole song if possible please! Understand if ya can't
Check out "know your enemy" live, the singer from Tool is also in it. Also Tom Morello and Adam Jones, gitarist from Tool have a history together.
They are incredible live, I've been lucky enough to see them three times.
The political party at the time was pushing "Family Values" as their talking point. If They Rally Round the Family, but their pockets are full of millitary and police brutality, then we get their real intentions. Rage was always aware of the things that Chomsky wrote and warned us of.
I love you guys listening to rock. great minds think alike
I’ve really enjoyed watching you guys process these songs and the fact that they had commercial success in the 1990’s. It’s made me reflect a lot on the differences in the world we lived in then and now. And the difference in experience between a white kid who was into rock music and a black kid who was into hip hop at that time.
The documentary about Woodstock 99 is very representative of my experience as a rock loving kid in the 90’s. I think late Gen X was just a perfect storm for angst and aggression with no productive outlet. We saw so much hypocrisy, but were so out numbered that we could never make our voices loud enough to effect change. So we worked on mastering abrasive insolence, as like a form of protest, I think.
As a 40 something mom now, with a deep love of history, I think Rage might have planted a perfect seed. They gave us something meaningful to be angry at. They taught those of us who cared in heavily segregated areas that the system did not actually work for everyone the way it did for us. They taught us to ask questions and form opinions about “controversial” topics that our parents and teachers would have shielded us from. And while we obviously didn’t run out and change the world dramatically in the last 30 years, most of us still want to be a part of changing it. We at least aren’t out here saying dumb things like All Lives Matter and those old Rage fans I know are all definitely raising more socially conscious kids than there were in the 1990’s. I personally think that meaningful change might be more possible as we become the old people and I really hope we get the chance to lift young revolutionary voices the way our generation’s were not.
And if you haven’t learned yet what a revolutionary bad *ss Mary Morello (Tom’s mom,) is, you should. She is everything!
Lyrics always on with Rage Against the Machine
Some good songs with a message: Pearl Jam…Jeremy (Suicide) Even Flow (homelessness) Alice In Chains, Rooster (war, Vietnam), Black Sabbath, War Pigs.
This was my favorite song when it came out. I was in 5th grade and it definitely influenced my taste in music and my world perspective
They're touring now and on the second show, Zack hurt his leg bad. Did that stop him? HELL NO--these latest performances have been something special. This was a great reaction! My next RATM request is Wake Up.
These are the thoughts that set fire to your city. Powerful words, important words.
Great choice! Keep them coming!
Great reacts! I enjoy your guys perspective and appreciate for music. I’d really like to see you guys react to Falling in Reverse. They have a music video trilogy: losing my mind, losing my life, drugs. I GUARANTEE once you react to one you’ll want to do the whole thing. Then you can do Popular Monster by them also! PS if I don’t see this in a month I’m unsubbin lol jk….but for real. Keep up the content!

SOAD is another band in similar vein - speaking out about issues but musicality is sooo cool, and emotive, and unique too.
Shoutout to "Friday"!! Great movie!! ✌❤
See Rage in 94 Woodstock. Love the mosh pit. The touch!
Hi Guys, new subscriber, I just watched your reaction for Killing in the Name Of. This was early 90s and the Rodney King beating and LA riots. You asked what people than thought now, well I am a white 64 year old women and this music is still prevalent today. It's addressing the worst of society. Honestly as a mother I didn't let my teenager listen to it as it was pretty harsh for young ones, I did the speaking , we are one and I will advocate that till the day I die. Peace and Power.
@15:56 bingo! THAT'S the idea behind this form of confrontational art is to get the dialogue going. when communication breaks down it all breaks down
Oh man you have got to do "Know Your Enemy" Musically this song is a metal/grunge/funk mix, but "Enemy" adds a rap flow that is just sick.
I saw Rage live at Lollapalooza 1992 with so many other bands. I was already listening as a vibe and gleaned some of the messaging but mostly the music. Try listening to some "In living color".
"Bulls on parade!" - North American metaphor slang,
Usually used to notify those around you that police officers/soldiers are present and/or taking action nearby, and that it may be time to defend yourself against them.
"Rally 'round your family, with a pocket full o' shells (If you stand your ground and act like you're going to protect yours at all costs, then...)
They rally 'round your family, with a pocket full o' shells...
They rally 'round your family, with a pocket full o' shells...
They rally 'round your family, with a pocket full o' shells...(They will respond by surrounding you with their legions and their pockets full o' shells to put you down... there's more of them than there is in your family unit and that's why they get a repeat 3x of their line... you get one. Better make it count...)
I think this overall viewpoint is supported by the fact that his verse states "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes, not need... just feed the war cannibal animal." There's a super energetic call to what is actually a Passive style of resistance over violence here slid into the mix that asks the listener to realize that all they're doing to violent protesters is "filling the cells" and then your response is right back to "Rally round the family, with a pocket full o' shells" which says that to keep doing this over and over is to just to rinse-wash-repeat this whole mess over and over. The existence of the band, their name, Zach's lyrics... you could all say they are their way of encouraging folks to find INTELLIGENT ways to protest that can disrupt their lil cycle here instead of participate in it.
Just my two cents...
Best commentary of ANY reaction video I have ever seen. Take the red pill and try Down Rodeo soon.

I’m a gen x’er. In the other Rage song you talk about wondering what did the kids that listened to this music grow up to b or did the take away from their views stick w us - ohhhhh, I wish we could have a conversation! It’s too much to write
Long story short, for me personality, very much so!
SO AHEAD OF THERE TIME - watch their video SLEEP NOW IN THE FIRE. Basically power, greed, 1% - you will see a clip of someone holding a Trump for president sign - this song was like 2000/1999!
I saw them play at Woodstock 99, burning the American flag!! While consumerism had us concert goers paying out the nose for water n food. Then that anger was turned back on the concert itself n it was burned down… there’s a great doc on Netflix about the fall of Woodstock 99 called TRAINWRECK- WOODSTOCK 99

Just a quick note De, re: your comment on ‘the message coming first and the great music coming second’ - surely its the other way around.
If the band/music/vocal style doesn’t appeal to you, and doesn’t get you hooked, the message is irrelevant.
As a 45 year old South African who’s been a fan of Rage since ‘92, its pretty interesting seeing the reaction of Americans who have recently discovered Rage.
Anyhoo, Bullet in the Head (a song about propaganda) should be next on your list.
Damn copyright 😩😩😩 I wanted to see your reaction to Zach rapping
“Down Rodeo”
Down Rodeo, man -- Down Rodeo
I love you guys though I'm not a fan of this format, since half the fun is watching people react in the moment, catching a groove or a bar in real time. I can't imagine watching you guys react to something like Down Rodeo and not seeing the reactions as they happen. I realize that this helps to take copyright claims entirely out of the equation, but at far too high a cost. Just an opinion, it's all love.
Rage 🇺🇸🇲🇽
Not scratches. Tom Merello doing that noise on his guitar.
awake and aware... more than woke. that's a relatively new word, and dumb a.f. says a 50 yr old man who LOVES rage. one can learn a lot from them.
Woke isn't new, been used for ages, it's just recently that reactionaries have turned it into a buzzword for their endless culture war. Means the same thing it always did: social consciousness. Imagine turning consciousness into a derogatory term.

Soooo muucchhh talkinnngggg
Yes, we were “woke” before woke was woke. We were raised like wolves in the 80’s and we despise the government at every turn. We don’t want anyone or anything knowing where we are, what we do, or how we feel. We feel really bad for people that need some sort of acknowledgment at every turn. Disappear It’s the greatest thing ever. If you know Gen X is the smallest generation ever. Because the strongest survived. We have zero F’s to give. And we literally have zero F’s to five going forward. I’m a big 2A and fight for any and all that are walking my way/ I don’t care about skin color I don’t care about gender, just be walking my way
