*Lyrics are a must with RATM.* Zach de la Rocha spits bars for days, always dropping knowledge. Zach is a true MC in an absolute killer band. One of the greatest live acts I've ever experienced...and I've been to hundreds and hundreds of concerts. Enjoy this fantastic rabbit hole

Agree with everything you said but I would change one word. Zach de la Rocha... always dropping IGNORANCE. Commies almost never reach the right conclusion about the failure and misery they see around them.
RATM were one of the first heavy rock bands to effectively blend a genuine hip hop vibe into their music. They have some great songs of their own but also recorded cover versions of hip hop classics (Cypress Hill - How I could just kill a man, Eric B & Rakim - Microphone fiend, Afrika Bambaata - Renegades of funk) in their own style. If you want to react to some more RATM, I recommend "Take the power back" and "Down rodeo".
I personally think they’re one of the only ones to master it. Maybe bc they have actual brown ppl in their band. But RATM was amazing bc they got a bunch of white suburban kids to bop to songs with revolutionary, anti imperialist messages. I was raised by an activist parent in the LGBTQ+ community, but there was so much I didn’t know bc my moms didn’t know it; we’d all been failed by our educational system that taught history from a male, Anglo, land owners perspective. Being a poor 80’s-90’s kid I didn’t have much access to computers or internet till the 00’s and Rage taught me info I had no other access to. My mom had been an anti racist, anti war, gay activist with a genius IQ and who could read 300 pages in 2hrs, but didn’t know about the race massacres, or even that much about stonewall. We were missing the history of blk ppl, immigrants, women, the working class & poor, indigenous ppls, LGBTQ+ ppl, radical socialists & communists who had a major impact on our country, etc. I was raised in the gay community and their was a real dearth of knowledge on gay history. Before the internet was what it is today, (or affordable) a lot of the more “subversive” but true American history was hard to find. Rage really was a gateway to even more radical, revolutionary thought.
Have there been others that have done it? None at RATM's level or even remotely close. I guess guys like kid rock and limp bizkit kinda tried to do it and had some crappy, albeit popular, songs. But they're just nowhere even close to RATM's level.
Rage Against the Machine songs you guys should listen to: Calm Like a Bomb, Bullet in The Head, Maggie's Farm, Pistol Grip Pump, The Ghost of Tom Joad, Bombtrack, and Down Rodeo. Just a few tracks from RATM to get cha started. Enjoy your birthday weekend!!
Keep googling, especially with RATM. Back when this came out, I didn't have Google, so I went to the library to figure out some of these references... my mind was blown by what I learned. When RATM released their first album, there wasn't anyone else that sounded like them. Rap/rock fusion was very very rare, and nothing hit as hard as them. Add in the fact that these guys are highly educated in politics and economics, and had a guitarist who spent endless hours exploring all the possible sounds he could make with his guitar...and we received one of the most unique bands created. Although they've influenced many other musicians, there's still nothing else quite like them.
Fantastic write up an kudos to you for taking the time to explore references you weren't familiar with. Respect! I hope you had the opportunity to see them live, they are incredible live.
Definitely checkout "killing in the name of" next. Tom Morello has an amazing guitar tone. He even scratches on the guitar like he's playing turn tables.
It’s actually not nameless. When bands release an album like that it’s considered self-titled. The name of the band is the name of the album. But you’re right, it is an incredible album. Every single song is great. Plus, Tom Morello won “Most Innovative Guitarist of the Year” for his killswitch technique. Plus they are very close with the band Tool. Some of them were roommates. That’s why Maynard James Keenan does a feature on “Know Your Enemy” and has performed it live with Rage a few times.
you don't know how much i appreciate the fact that you google the lyrics and try to find/understand the messages behind it. Not every song is meant to be looked into like that, but songs like these _definitely_ are! Wish more reactors would do the same
Wake Up Freedom and Bombtrack are another 3 great tracks by them. Killing in the name is their most succesfull song but its more "comercial", those 3 are more deeper
For their self entitled album (of which this song is from) "no samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this record" was included in their liner notes.
Suggestion… when you listen to RATM, pull up the lyrical videos. It will help both of you truly catch the power of the lyrics and messages, keep up the reactions to RAGE 🔥🔥
I hope you start to react to more Rage. Please react to lyric videos so you can see that Zack not only has a crazy flow but he teaches a class on untold history on every song. Tom (guitar), Tim (bass) and Brad (drums) deliver the hardest, funkiest and innovative music to match the fire Zack drops. Their music and especially their message is still 100% relevant. Please react to Wake Up, Take the Power Back, Mic Check, Roll Right. Thanks for the reaction.

“Don’t gotta burn the books, they just remove them” All about the military industrial complex. Hasn’t changed in America since the industrial revolution.
Here's what I always noticed about the chorus... He changes the pronouns. Zach and Tom are both proponents of aggressive non-violent protest and change. So, for my money, he's pointing at the futility of being violent against the system with something as stupid as guns, because... If you rally 'round your family... with a pocket full of shells... They rally 'round your family with a pocket full of shells (x3) (so if you stand your ground in that fashion, they will do the same and surround your family with three times as much of that stuff. He's advising to be smart. He's advising to fight harder AND smarter. And to do it in a way that doesn't get your family shot. Just my two cents...
Take The Power Back, Know Your Enemy, Wake Up, Guerilla Radio, and Down Rodeo are some more absolutely funky high energy head-bangable songs with crazy deep messages. As others have likely mentioned, lyric videos are best for RATM. All of their songs are politically charged and Zach de la Rocha is a masterful lyricist.

3:05 they're criticizing republicans/conservatives. Rally around the family refers to their whole thing about "family values" blah blah blah, which was particularly common in the reagan era...and pocket full of shells refers to gun shells...because they often support going to war or arming groups in other countries to go to war.
Since you seemed to enjoy the guitar you should check out the guitarist Tom Morello and Grandson (that's the artist's name not his grandson) doing his song "Hold the Line." Its fire!!
RATM is a band of social commentary, one of the members Tom Morello has a Harvard Degree on Social Science, the whole band leans strongly into socialist philosophy. For me this song is about monied interests in political repression, the "rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells" is the idea that conservative-capitalist groups preach family values (rally round the family) while beneath the veneer is the hidden threat of punitive action (a pocket full of shells). It also threads into ideas sending people out to war against non-conformist groups (foreign or domestic) [the violent implications of the pocket full of shells] while promoting such violence as necessary to protect our "family values". Finally, again for me, I speak for no one else, it implies a critique of US fear-gun-violence culture, the protect your family and freedoms (the rally) with a pocket full of shells - the underlying threat, the danger you are protecting your family against is the danger you bring yourself and impose on others. All of this with the underlying thread that they profit, that the influence makers and capitalist lords are profiting off this illusion of freedom and protection disguising oppression and fear.
