- We answered the tool army comments and did a reaction to Lateralus by Tool! This was a live version of Lateralus and take it from us, it was an experience! First time hearing Lateralus by Tool was really therapeutic in some ways, but they are absolute geniuses how they perform their songs. Stay strapped for the next episode.

You really need to hear the studio version to this as well, live is cool and you see all the effects and artistic design they use, but this version sounds distorted and not crisp and beautifully clear like the studio version. They do make some use of the Fibonacci math sequence in this song (1,2,3,5,8,13, etc) and if you keep adding all the numbers you get a spiral, which can be seen naturally over and over in nature, such as in nautilus shells, rams horns, bird plumage colors, butterflies, plants , just on and on. So when he says spiral out that is part of that sequence but he's also saying our own consciousness and evolution is also like an infinite unfolding spiral and he urges us to keep on going, to keep exploring our own humanity.
I came here to say that this version doesn't do the song justice. Even just the insane delay on Maynard made it jumbled and gross through the majority of this.

They just picked a bad video. They're one of the few bands I've seen live who sound like the cd in person. This is just a bad recording because of how anal they are about people doing it. If it was taken from a performance they released, youd think it was lipsynced

Hey De and Dre! I'm actually in the "pause it and rewind it as much as you need to, to take it in" camp. It can be grating, sometimes, for fans of the material to have to sit and wait for that cathartic release of a bass drop or what have you while you talk about what you're thinking, but at the end of the day, we've heard these songs a million times, if we want to play it all the way through to feel satisfied, we can go and do that. As a fan of the reaction/review channels and the personalities therein, I care less about hearing a song in a straight shot all the way through, and more about what you, the reactor, the dude with the camera poised on your face, the mics cued to your voice, have to say about it. And, even though I'm a huge Tool nerd, and have been listening to them, at least casually, for two decades now and in earnest for 7-8 years, I get just as much out of these reactions as you two do, if not more. It's like looking at a puzzle or word search for too long, and then someone random comes along and finds that piece or word that you've been spending 10 minutes to find. You bring a new perspective to the discussion and it helps me to see stuff I may have overlooked or just taken for granted all this time. Hope you two are well! Peace and love to you and yours.

Thank you from the TOOL Army for continuing your TOOL journey! I understand why the final section doesn't feel like it fits here to you. In this live version, they had a long section in the middle that is not part of the studio version but was probably very appreciated by the fans in attendance. Note also that TOOL is known to musically participate in the progressive rock genre (they fall in several genres), so their songs build, and build, and build, and build, usually to an explosive finish. Oftentimes their songs will build slowly, explode, switch to something softer, build again, and rinse repeat. The final section perhaps musically makes more sense in the studio version (as others noted below). Keep on rocking! xD

My best friend and I were 2nd row center for this tour. He had a pot pipe in his hand, waiting for the lights to go down, so he could smoke. We were so enthralled, he never even lit it and was still holding it when we walked out. I've seen Tool on every tour, minus the current one, and it KILLS me that I haven't gone!
You nailed it about Anti-ego. Maynard is often in the background or even in disguise because he wants you to focus on the experience and not the singer.
The writing process for Tool is the band members( Danny Carey - drums, Justin Chancellor - bass, and Adam Jones - guitar) create the music and then send it to Maynard James Keenan to write lyrics to the songs. Also Adam Jones before creating the band worked in special effects for movies such as Jurassic Park, Nightmare on Elm street, Terminator, etc. and he's the driving force in the art and visuals. Yep! Took a lot of nuts to leave a gig like that to pursue his music career, but I think it all turned out alright in the end. Lol looks like a no brainer on this end tho. Glad he had the guts to pursue his passion.
Seeing them live in concert is an amazing experience. First time I saw them I walked out mesmerized by the light show and videos that were timed to the music. Best show I’ve ever seen.

Lateralus was originally named "9-8-7" ... which is the 16th number in the Fibonacci sequence... If you notice the time signatures and corresponding lyrical patterns are all in that mathematical sequence ... from the chord progression to even the syllables Maynard sings... this song is truly a work of art!!!

You catch so so much of jt don't second guess yourself too much, it's basically impossible to fully and perfectly interpret a TOOL song on your first listen, lots even gave several equally likely meanings... but stuff like "wow the singer is in the back" and "that drummer must be a math genius" you guys seem like you know what you're talking about. I just subscribed for 3 reasons.
1. I love your respect for the genre and its adherents.
2. You really grapple with what is being presented unlazily, as opposed to surface level reaction.
3. I wanna get your understanding of more metal music.
You gentlemen made me realize that most of the react videos I see are lacking in several categories, including interpretations of the lyrics. I love how music touches everyone a little differently. Thanks for a react video done right.
P.S. I am glad I am not the only that can’t absorb everything a tool song has to offer in one go.
You can hear Jazz, Early Metal, Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, and the scene from LA at the time permeate through the music.
Thanks for a great reaction. A lot of people don't hear what you guys are hearing and its cool to know that you actually get it and its a true reaction. So, I know you mentioned needing headphones... Would love to see a reaction to either a better recorded live show or the studio recording... with headphones. It's difficult to listen to Tool in parts because each part affects the next and as a viewer, I want you to experience the full effect.Two reasons I watch reactions: To see the immediate reaction of how the music moves the listener and to get comments. It would probably be more work but you're already at 40 minutes with your reactions. Perhaps doing two reactions. One where you just listen and then the next when you break down and comment on what you are hearing. Or if you are concerned about not pausing the video perhaps there would be a way to insert the comments from the second listen. Knowing that you are not actually pausing I think would make the reaction more real. Also in the future if you do Parabol and Parabola... they are really one song, IMO. And when people reacting to it pause between them, it is deflating as a viewer. But you guys are great and your intelligence and honest reactions are not lost on me... and they won't be lost on most Tool fans either. One last thing I might add... IMO you kind of landed on the top of the mountain. Tool is their own genre and there really isn't anything else like them. They are kind of like Led Zeppelin... Other bands want to sound like them but just can't. Both bands are difficult to pigeonhole into one genre but, IMO, they are separate from everyone else... and although I think Tool was influenced by Zeppelin they don't really sound very much alike. Cheers. One last thing. I have been to a few Tool concerts and they are unlike anything else. The energy is almost tangible and kind of just flows through you. Very much an experience. And I was not under the influence although to pay $8 for a bottle of water there, it would have been a good excuse.

Tool is like a good book on philosophy. You see or hear something new everytime you look to it.
As others have suggested...listen to the album versions of tool songs first before giving live performances a go. The distortion, the slight echo and slightly different delivery in this versus the album version makes this not as impactful as it should be. That and the visuals can be just distracting in this setting where you are partially taking the song in and pausing every few minutes to dissect what you see and hear. Album > live for first listen 👍
I reeeaaally hope they listened to the studio version afterward. The big build section at the end that they said didn't fit is likely due to all the distortion and echoes. When it's all clean and balanced, it's incredible and ties the entire song together

TOOL ARMY!! I've seen the band perform live twice, and Maynard was behind a white sheet, and all you could see was his silhouette! At one point, my sister and myself made it up to the front row, and a she was dancing, he was doing exactly what she was doing!! Mind blowing!
Trust me when you hear studio version and read the lyrics the last part of the song makes a perfect sense.

You described it best at the end, progressive rock in general is about the journey, and as you also started to see, it's basically like multiple songs in one, a big part of progressive rock is the transitions into seemingly completely different songs and then the pull back in, it's a whole experience, I listen to literally all types of music, but Tool has been one of my favorite bands for a long time.
I highly recommend checking out the Tool - Pneuma Live Vic Firth Danny Carey Drum Cam video to see up close how insane that man is on the drums, definitely one of the greatest drummers of all time, some other good songs I'd recommend are (besides mostly their entire discography, honestly they don't really miss, just gotta be able to feel the vibe they got goin)

I think it's the way this is recorded, but I have to agree with the the other comments that this is not the best Tool performance I've ever seen. They pride themselves on sounding as good live as they do in the studio. The echo in the recording takes away from the full Tool experience.
There's a reason we long-suffering fans waiting 13 years between the release of 10,000 Days in 2006 & Fear Inoculum in 2019!
And yes! Their shows are AMAZING. And the sound and timing is near perfection.
Whoa! I've been watching your reactions, and I'm really impressed by your insight. I first heard TOOL on acid in 1996, I've seen them multiple times. I think the first time Maynard was behind a sheet in the back. I was right up front, ready to get shoved against the stage and stone cold sober as we crossed the border from canada to see them. After a few minutes I realized I need to see this from above. And found a seat. It was days after 9/11/ 2001 and Maynard recognized our fear and gratitude for being together. I watched as a sea of people moved as one and, unusually, I was happy that I was sober. A TOOL concert is an experience, thought and time don't exist. You're correct there is no ego and the enormity of what is happening makes me weep every.single.time. because it's just so beautiful that those 4 people found each other. There's no need for drugs, no judgment to those ho attend high. The intesity of the performance and art work and watching it vibrate across a stadium is more than enough and has made me realize how beautiful life is. Your comments on the "switch" in the song were really thoughtful, I can't say I've ever felt that, I always felt it changed while maintaining the same feel and I can hear the "spiral" throughout the song. I feel that even though there was something lost in watching a live video you still managed to take another step towards fully understanding what we see. I've always felt TOOL follows a pattern akin to a sexual experience, one I've noticed in almost every song this one especially , which adds yet another complex mystery to their insanely human but divine experience. Great job from a shitty recording! If you get a chance go see them and find a good seat, Mind enhancement provided naturally. But thats just me. Thanks

Tool Fool here, in the Tool Army since the beginning.. Truly enjoy listening to your analysis. You described how they write-Maynard writes his part after the music is pretty laid down. Very good pickups on your part. The guitarist Adam Jones was asked why he doesn't "rock out" when he plays, he said he was too busy counting in his head.

ALL TOOL soundscapes are therapeutic for me. TOOL and meditation saved my life and I couldn't be more grateful. I've listened to them since 1995 and I STILL get chill bumps when I listen to them. I've seen them live about a dozen times and all I can say is WOW! I took my husband to see the Fear Inoculum show here in Tampa and he was blown away. He hates my music, and I don't like his either but one thing we can both agree on is that TOOL is in a class all of their own. No one can enter their world and not get something out of it. Thanks to Maynard, Adam, Danny and Justin for 29 years of life changing music!

Wow, I've watched a lot of reaction vids, some more real than others. But this is tied as my favourite song ever (along with The Decline by NOfX) and hearing such a genuine first time reaction to such genius is awesome to witness. Especially De, your initial thoughts are very insightful and made me consider new things about the song, or just be impressed by how quick you grasped some of this very deep art. I'm in the same boat when you've said you listen to the music first and don't focus lyrics. I've been a Tool fan for a couple decades now, and I still don't know half their lyrics lol. He had never even heard of Tool lol the look of uncertainty on his face in the beginning was hilarious. About halfway through the show he turns to me and says “I feel like I’m being brainwashed and I don’t even mind” 😂 he was a fan after that show

I’ve been to a ton of concerts, seen everyone from Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath to The Beastie Boy, Metallica, Pentatonix, Twista, System of a Down, to many to name.
But the Tool concerts I’ve been to have been amazing, best concert going experiences I’ve had.
And I second the drum cam!!! You mention the drummer is a math genius, yes! He writes some songs based on sacred geometry. That’s why it gets you in the feels! Among many other things
HAHA, you guys are fun. I've seen every new Tool album tour since Aenima ('97). Took my son to last one. I'm kinda jaded from seeing SO many, so seeing my son enjoy them for 1st time made it new and exciting for me.

Great reaction guys, just watched The Pot reaction and had to see what else you had reacted to of Tool. This song is truly a masterpiece. Not the greatest recording of it but you get the vibe. Oh, one other that is incredible to showcase the lead singers voice more is ' Judith' by A Perfect Circle, Maynards 2nd band.
The whole song is in the timing , it is based on the Fibonacci Sequence , a natural mathematical phenomenon in the world we live in . The way that the 3 members write the music then Maynard takes his time to find the words that fit the music . Maynard is a Genius , his ability to produce wine and words that we consume are legendary . His vineyard is producing Award winning wines and the words that come from that experience is shown in Tool's songs .
Tool's ability to weave so many thoughts into their songs is why they are so loved .
Lateralus is an amazing mathematical song not just as a listening product but a living entity itself .
Maynard wants the music to be in the front and the words to follow the music behind . He wants the lead singer role to be not a lead singer but an integral part of the band . That's why he isn't in a spot light , he is hooded and in the background .

Live version is cool, but a lot of the music (including the ending bit) is kind of ruined by the terrible audio quality. Maybe in future stick to studio audio :)
Yes. I listen to Tool for therapy! Tool is therapy! Their entire discography is all about internal transformation to the best human being you can be.
I and my spouse really enjoyed the reaction of the pot yall did. That being said, yall did yourselves a disservice by listening to this live version first. It does not do the song justice.
I think the idea that Tool is a very "introspective" band fits perfectly. Every aspect of their approach is very thoughtful and deep. In many ways our culture has moved to the "external" as the primary focus and lost some the elements that really push us to look inward.
For many the external is safe because there is something to grab onto but to evolve and grow it takes that looking inward and becoming truly aware of ones self that can be one of the most uncomfortable experiences in life. Keep listening guys...and if you get a chance to listen with some headphones without any distractions you'll take even more away from the experience.

My number 1 live TooL song is pushit. It can be found here on UA-cam with the lyrics. But you have to hear the album version first, to really understand how truly awesome the live version is. Its explained by Maynard in the beginning of the live version. This version made me look at Maynard as a singer in a very different light, it really opened my eyes to how amazing he really is vocally, and also how the band members literally changed a song without changing it.

It literally took me over 20 years to really appreciate and understand the genius of TOOL. As an 18 yr old kid hearing Sober I loved it right away but it was just another “jam”. Years go by and I started really listening to more of their music and I started to get it. Headphones help dramatically. TOOL let me know when I was ready for TOOL and the whole experience. I went to my first toop show in November and ive been to many concerts but ive never ever felt like that. A religious experience is the closest thing i can describe it as and even thays not enough.

Great breakdown of the lyrics. Also of note is that the song is based of of the Fibonacci sequence, also known as the golden ratio, which is a a numerical sequence found everywhere in nature, architecture and art. Do some research on the sequence, it will blow your mind and it explains the "spiral out" part of the song.
Look how complex Tool is. Imagine knowing every second, all the lyrics, the Fibonacci Sequence, my own interpretation for 10 years, and finally seeing this live. I’m not a drug guy. And it’s still a paralyzing experience. I think you guys may be jumping the gun going to Lateralus live before hearing it.

Great reaction guys! Since Tool doesn't have many 'official live videos' I'd suggest going with lyric videos. Official videos can be distracting to some people especially with Tool videos.
Another suggestion if you want to go deeper into rock music would be Bloodywood. They are a metal band from India and they are the most wholesome people in music in my opinion. The songs I would suggest starting with would be Aaj, Jee Veerey or if you are feeling especially wild Dana Dan is an intense banger! Enjoy!
