I wish Justine was a bit longer because the plot of this short game was honestly perfect. I'd love a sequel to Amnesia featuring Justine, or at least being able to see her or interact with her as the mc.
i am sure she got arrested by the pôlice at the end after a last meal . to endure many years in prison and maybe get executed by guillotine for what she did to her suitors and the three other persons. so no hope for an ending. many things lead to her mansion. to show that Alois Racine's father was right about Justine
I like how Amnesia: Justine manages to be set in an universe that contains supernatural horrors, yet it doesn't explore that kind of horror. Only the horrors that humanity itself can create. The basement/dungeons of the Florbelle estate aren't haunted by reanimated corpses of a long gone war nor a cosmic Lovecraftian entity, only the broken prisoners of an insane woman. To go on a very specific and nerdy rant, I wonder what happened to the Cabinet after Justine passed away. Was it ignored as a dark dungeon of a bygone time, or was it's true purpose seen? Are it and Justine now a dark and depressing footnote in French history. Is it now a museum? People living in the Amnesia universe's 21st century are likely morbidly curious and excited to hear about the madwoman who conducted secret, Saw-like experiments in her basement in the 1830's. I at least would be binging the shit out of that topic.
I asked Chatgpt to write the plot for an Amnesia game set in Modern times, basically, this was the case Justine is a popular person by the 21st century you play as A person descended from Justine and Daniel(the one from the dark descent I know but thankfully, I calculated their ages and it's not a situation where the make is way older than the female, heck, it's the other way around and yes, I used the wiki for researching their age) and they find out about their ancestry, and decide to dig deeper into their family history, leading to organizations getting involved trying to research the supernatural bullshit
Imagine living in the modern day of Amnesia's universe, and by the modern day, the actions of Oswald Mandus from machine for pigs are discovered, imagine the amount of conspiracy theories trying to explain Mandus knowing if the 20th century despite living in 1899, not to mention about the fact that he tried to end the world with a nuclear explosion, imagine going to history class and seeing the topic: The Time A Man Tried To End The World
Amnesia Justine also had a lot of references to Portal, like Justine saying "I´m still alive" at the end and the whole thing essentially being one big testing sequence guided by a disembodied, in this case recorded voice there is even a GLADOS easter egg hidden in the library
That’s because the game was created for Valve’s Potato Sack ARG, where a bunch of games on Steam updated themselves with potatoes to tie into the release of Portal 2. The letter that gets you the Still Alive ending is also basically just describing a Portal gun and is even signed by A.S. Industries, a.k.a. Aperture Science.
My favorite Amnesia game! I adore this one for it’s grim and hopeless nature. The bad guy ends up winning in the end and we get no closure for those we wanted to save.. how *wonderfully* tragic.
i think TDD is still the best, but the story of Justine was still original and fresh. and nope, we never know if the people we rescued really got rescued or not , Justine said herself in one of her recording that the police would come at her home sooner or later, she must have left enough pieces of evidence while kidnapping six persons, we just make our guess at the end

A part of me understands why Justine ended up the way she was...but I still was hoping she would meet her end by some means. I suppose at the very least, age would catch up with her, but still she would be removed from the world eventually. I also remember that this was one big reference (and part of a big meta-game that Valve did) with Portal.
I think one of the recordings implied she expected the authorities to investigate eventually. No way you can kidnap 6 people, some probably rich and influential, and get away with it.
@@giannilyanicks1718 they are saying that they understand why she is the way that she is, but still hoped that she would get punished for her own wrongdoings.
I think there's one thing you missed. Justine's father came on to her - meaning he tried to sexually assault her because she reminded him of her mother and their similar looks. That was why she had to kill him, and most likely one of the final straws that pushed her to her insanity.
Was it ever confirmed that he made a move on her though? the wording here implies that it was actually her who tried to get intimate and felt ashamed afterwards because of it "trying to fill the void left by my mother" it´s not stated that she was made to fill it or failed to fill it for that matter and since the note is written from her perspective I doubt she would put herself into this disadvantageous position willingly given how convinced she is of herself
I think that Justine, like her namesake in de Sade's novel, was an abuse victim and a lot of her sadism was inherited from her father. There are hints from loading screens and Justine's thoughts that the dungeon and its insane contraptions were left over by her father, and it's also implied that the alien artifact that she used to kill her father might have also been influencing her just like Mandus was turned by an orb into a homicidal monster. This game is an experiment by Justine to see if any trace of her original humanity is still left.
Fun fact: the star shaped soapstone is actually a reference to the amnesia short stories more specifically the first one called the grinch house also the last name of dr fournier is a reference to amnesia the bunker with a character known as sergeant fournier
Really enjoyed this video, can't wait for future Amnesia installments! May I recommend doing a story explained on 'Lucius'? The game is nearing its 10 year anniversary, would love to see it happen!
I feel it would have been cool to have this game tie into dark decent. With the way she likes to torture people it would have made sense that the two characters collecting Vital or whatever it was to keep the shadow at bay would have contacted her for help in torturing if not for ideas or equipment or something.
There is a note in the flooded dungeon area near the separated lever on a shelf under a box. I remember that it was a letter to Justine's father Monsieur Florbelle by Daniel (or Herbert) regarding the Algeria expedition that led to the events of The Dark Descent. (As shown near the end of the video.)
Probably something similar to what Mandus did to his party guests. One subtle theme about this story is the people Justine targets for her games: rich people, authority figures, and fellow sadists. Just like Mandus, I think she loathes her fellow aristocrats and enjoys tormenting them; but she also hates herself, since she's willing to risk dying just to see how humane her 'true self' is.
Thank you for separating any links to Rebirth in it's own part of the video! I could enjoy this one without the fear of spoiling Rebirth, which I've yet to play and know nothing about whatsoever. Personally I love villains, villainous characters, and your re-telling of the story made me appreciate Justine all the more. I really like how the creators did not put in some sort of karmic justice cliche into her story, something present in so many stories about the protagonist being the evil one. It is left to us to judge her, and ultimately, she is left unharmed and unhindered. The endings and the short conversation with Clarice, to me indicate that Justine had the skill to cover up her atrocious actions and would continue this lifestyle for many, many years to come. She is a fascinating character, one moment delving deep into the deadly dungeons of her own creation, toying with six unfortunate souls, and in the next moment she slips into the shoes of an aristocrat, lighthearted and ready to entertain guests. It truly feels like, to her, it's just a fun little game.
The short story collection that comes with TDD features the star-shaped soapstone more than once. It was pried out of the door of an orb chamber in Calais, France, and during Professor Herbert's time in Algiers a French officer tells him how the stone has been in his family since the siege of Calais and has driven people in his family to great inspiration but also madness. So Justine's craziness may be supernaturally caused.
In reality, individuals like Justine never answer for their crimes. Quite frankly, someone this evil and sadistic deserves her own feature-length game. Imagine the reveal at the end of The Dark Descent if you've been playing as Justine, instead of the somewhat sympathetic Daniel.

In the Marquis de Sade's stories, such as the one that inspired Justine, aristocrats and authority figures were sadistic hypocrites. I think this Justine may have been subject to abuse by her father and his friends, making her into a sadomasochist herself. In a twisted way she's targeting other sadists (Basile's working class, but apparently beat her during sex) and powerful figures in a society she believes is full of BS. This would link her to Mandus' similar resentment of the wealthy and poor alike, and that hallway full of insane ramblings also imply that the orb has been speaking to her. Her childhood friend still works as her maid, and Justine hides her sadistic crimes from her. It's unclear if it's because she actually cares or if she's just being pragmatic, but I'd like to think Justine wants to protect the one person she cared about since she was a kid.
I think it's ridiculous to say "We all know what for." No we don't. She could literally just be hosting a dinner party. And her childhood friend was _not_ "lost." Clarice, Justine's maid, is the same Clarice who was her childhood friend.
You missed the main link. In TDD when you go to archives in the first part of the game there's a room with a grammaphone near a window which plays a tape with Justine's voice. That was Frictional's easter egg to the DLC and the main link between Brennenburg and Justine simultaneously.

And I just beat Dark Descent and after the game was over I fully understood what I played and didn't need to look up a story explained for it. If this game was longer and the devs had more time to flesh out the story and the characters it would've been a great game for sure.
don't listen to the dick riders. This game was okay. Great review btw it helped me understand A LOT of what I just played.
Little aparté, Aloïs is pronounced ah low hiss
I wasn't sure about watching this, I didn't know if it was a lore and order video, would recommend adding it to the video title
All of Dead space lore books , movies , games and dlc please
Can you do Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West?
Omg, My name lol!! I never played it but I did watched it.
Edit: Wow, what a story lol. Mmmmmmmmm lol. Oooh, a story for me; nah lol, just kidding. No man for me tho lol. Oh geez, this is something I would watch. And, oh, almost so close as me and that character is so close lol😉.
Wow Alois pronounciation is Alowa not Alois HAHA! Thanks!
I'm 27. Just played Dark Descent yesterday and Justine today.
I played machine of pigs back 2017. I still prefer machine of pigs but damn these games are good. And creepy.
