Congrats guys!!! 🐕 We got a Kitty on our 31 ft boat and it was the best decision we ever made. Endless joy, they are work but the amount of love and happiness you get from them is beyond words 🥰 soon you will not be able to imagine how life was without him!
I disagree, If the dog is properly trained it should be a pleasure to have around and not be a pain in the butt. I find most owners simply do not know what they are doing. Biggest mistake I see is people treating their dogs like humans, speaking and rationalizing with them. You must teach your dog what is acceptable and what is not and in so doing your energy level and how you communicate with your dog must be at a higher level of energy than they themselves are evoking. Most owners are far too neutral with their corrections and praise. Dogs need a clear message, that is Great or That is Bad! Your voice, tone, tenor, mannerisms need to clearly with zero gray area let the dog know where he stands. If he still does not get it you need to reliably escalate the praise and or correction. For example you tell your dog to sit (easiest command). If they do not sit it is worthless to say ‘Sit’ again with the same tone and tenor. You need to escalate to ‘SIT!’ If that does not get a response you need to escalate with the command again and a touch. If your dog learns that every time they do not listen, that you will reliably escalate, they will learn to heed very quickly
"I'm just gonna sleep out here two nights or so until he calms down" - which really means: "He'll be sleeping in our bunk for the rest of his life".... :)
If your propwalk pulls your stern to port you can use the momentum of the boat at the first critical seconds while gaining enough speed so that the rudder will steer when regering with gear in idle or neutral. Approach the slip from the opposite direction as in the video. Make a turn to port, just before you're in line with the slip and the stern still has momentum to starboard hit hard reverse, like 80-90%, to get the boat moving, rudder centered, towards the slip in 1,5-2,5 knots depending how your rudder steers in reverse, gear in neutral (preferable) or idle reverse, steer with rudder and keep the speed up with short bursts if needed. When half length of boat is between the slip it's time to start concentrate on braking.
You are doing a lot of things correctly. Overall taking the time to train a dog at the start pays huge divides over time. Crate training is a must. All our dogs have loved the crate, in fact most rather sleep in the crate at night. The most important of all commands is the 'recall". No matter the situation you want Oso to come on command. We use the dog's name as the recall command. This means we try to avoid at all cost using their name, period. Each of our dogs has two names, we would use "Osa" as the recall command and the other name is a "nick" name (Little Buddy), which is used during normal interaction. If you use their main name during normal communications they get desensitized to the recall command

After watching sailing nandji i wouldn't personally have a pup on board, you have to ship them and leave them in quarantine for months sometimes, my heart would break

She gets seasick in larger swell but children's ibuprofen on beef jerky eases her nausea. All that said, we are leaving San Diego and heading into the Caribbean. The poodle side of Oso should make him an excellent water dog; easily adaptable to swimming and loves to do it. That terrier side of him may make him a little rambunctious so he may unintentionally end up in the water more often than you expect. Looks like you got one smart, capable dog in Oso! Congratulations. Love each other well, all of you.
The puppy needs a warm blanket to cover him and a warm hot water bottle to comfort him. Hello from South Africa. Sometimes the ticking of an alarm clock helps.
Backing a full-keel boat into a slip is something you will NEVER not feel a little stressed about. You may totally master the maneuver in calm winds and no current, and the next time you come in (this time with a boat full of guests probably) the wind will be on your nose with a current pushing the bow. Then you figure that one out, and next time the wind is on the port beam and magnifies the prop-walk. It's an adventure every time.
I love Jordan's comment about there being lots of reasons not to have kids or pets cruising. It may alter some of the places you'll go (But so did having the bulkhead fail in Atticus 1) I hope and pray that your growing family brings you joy and enriches your life like you have enriched ours.
I love when Jordan drops those Pearls!! He has a wiser Soul than he knows... it is not a good idea “at all” to have an animal on a boat!! Especially if your going into other countries!!! It’s also not a good idea to own a boat!!! It’s also a crazy thought to sail with your spouse for more than a week off shore!!! It also crazy to even have kids, let alone have them live with you in a 100-200 square foot home! But!!!! With all that said... I really, really, really, LOVE Crazy People!!!
So glad to see that y’all are crate training him from the beginning. Dogs are great and even as small as he is he can sense things we can’t. That will come in helpful at times. It is possible to teach him to do his business in a certain area of the boat when you’re underway. The sooner you start that sort of training the better. The crate serves 2 purposes: it will end up being a comfort to him and at the same time, dogs do not like to poo or pee where they sleep. So if that happens...,(particularly as he gets a little older), then you’ve either left him too long, (couldn’t hold it), or he could be sick. I’m writing as I watch... good on you for the urine grass and socializing with the young kids as well as the other dogs. He’s looking great! I’m telling you all this as a former dog trainer. He’ll be a great dog for your growing family. Love you guys. Holler if your ever passing through Greenville, SC
We like dogs and we don't like people who don't like dogs. We have two that live aboard and in spite of the extra work would never give them up. You will have joy every day, well done!
Good idea I might try ! Sas goinfre to go for artificial grass….. Checked, itwork ‘s great on a balcony , soaking it behind the boat was also the idear
Jordan nails it. There’s always a “reason” not to do something you have been wanting to do... whether it’s time, money, or practicality (whatever that means...) but if it is important to you, you go ahead and do it and figure out the details along the way. My (unasked for) advice? Get Little Dude used to being groomed, nails cut, teeth brushed etc... because you’ll be doing a lot of that. We have a Cocker Spaniel and she’s not a fan of having her nails cut or her ears cleaned but it HAS to be done!
Well, I watch a lot of sailing videos and it seems people who's pet dies or leaves the boat, makes their life a little easier. But I get it that you want some more action in your life to break up the monotony. Good luck
Awwwwwwww so cute. So happy for you THREE....Funny Jordan keeps calling him Buddy because he looks right now like our little dog who we named Buddy. Enjoy the love that only a puppy can bring us. Puppy love. Nothing like it.

Congratulations!! Love all the positive reinforcement training!! He is so stinking cute! You guys need the netting to go along the rails like sv Delos has! Can't wait to see more of Oso!!
We love dogs and sailed with our 60lb Lab, Gracie, until she became too old to get around the boat in comfort. Some considerations - you'll need to vacuum twice a day or face a potential clogged bilge pump at the worst possible moment. You'll also want to get something to protect your cabin sole from his claws. We used yoga mats and rug runners in the high traffic areas. Good Luck!
If crate training the ‘lil’dude’ it is a must to take them from the crate straight out to where they are meant to eliminate and then praise like crazy when they do.
To all the naysayers today, I think I have met you before. 36 years ago when I decided to get married you said mistake. When she got pregnant you said kids are a mistake. From housed to pets, cars, careers and many other things you said mistake, mistake, mistake. So glad I made all those mistakes. Yes sometimes it will be a pain to have a dog, just like with my two dogs two cats and 34 year old African gray parrot but it’s part of a full life. Congrats on the new family member, have fun, he’s awesome👍
Awwwww.....such a cute little dude.....you made the absolutely right choice....perfect addition to your boat...and he will love Maine when you get here....it is our home and we have been sailing the coastline for over 16 years.
Bloody hell! Reading some of these comments makes it seem that Americans are more soppy about dogs than the British! Dog on a, relatively, small boat? Madness! Totally unfair on the poor bloody animal. However, it would seem that the question, asked in the post, is redundant - the dog is on board. I wish you, and the dog, all the best. For all those who disagree, the question was asked, I gave my honest answer.
Big decision, Big responsibility, Big change, Big hearts. Little puppy, Little poops. From what we seen in the video, little Cap'n Oso will be well taken care of and loved. Such a lucky dog! Oso seems to be a quick learner and very smart. Also nice to see the new boat is working out great for the new addition. Looking forward to the next vid. Cheerz!!!!
I know I am supposed to love pets. But it is hard to watch channels with pets since i can’t help to think about the things not shown. Pee , poop, hair and general smell of an animal. - and all that on a confined space.
Nothing like living in a tiny space where everything smells like dog & hair everywhere. GIANT maintenance issue, scratched decks, furniture, travel issues, etc. I love dogs BUT NOT on a small cruising boat.
Getting a pet is a bad idea when your traveling the world. Just check out sailing Nanji and their dog problems. It's costing them $10,000 dollars to get it back home to australia. They listed off all the countries you CANNOT GO too, lots of the pacific and well Aus too and most of the indian ocean countries don't allow as well. Really think hard about this, and be prepared to leave it with someone else when you cannot take it to the next country. CHEERS Steve h.
Aww, little dude O'so is a darling. I've been watching you two since you bought Atticus. I love your videos. My husband and I sail an S2 9m on Lake Michigan. We dream of bluewater sailing. Not sure if it will happen but we can dream, right? . I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from you. I especially enjoyed your educational videos while you were on the hunt for Atticus ll. I'm a professional groomer of 23 years plus professional dog trainer. I own my own small grooming business and employ 5 people. I want to offer you help with the grooming and training of your new little guy if you'd like it. Congratulations on your new family member! And congratulations as you begin your journey on your beautiful new boat.
We have been watching you two (now three) for a few months and just love you all. I am a retired Air Force fighter pilot and my wife is a retired pastor (the drinking kind). We travel a lot and have found using a crate for our pooches is by far the best way to boat/travel. Get him use to the crate as soon as possible and make sure you cover the crate at night. There may be some sleepiness nights at first but the crate and covering it will work best for and him. Dee and Betty
We sailed with Jet, our 50lb. Dutch Shepherd. We traveled to Cuba, Isla (where we met you guys), Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. While it was a bitch to deal with in bad weather, we had amazing experiences with him. We called him our Ambassador. He was an immediate conversation starter. Oso is smaller and easily managed. Good luck with him. He's so damn cute. Wishing you guys all the best.
cute puppy. I will say backing into your slip is a lot easier if you go past your slip then put the boat in reverse to get some momentum, prop walk under control and gain rudder authority... sort of a running start. trying to pivot in front of your slip is much harder. wind tide and current will always be different.
Gorgeous puppy, and such a wonderful addition to your yacht. However, a huge mistake for Pacific sailing, especially NZ & Oz, many marine parks don't allow dogs, horrendous quarantine, costs, shots, etc, good luck, you're much braver than me. I want a dog so much but there's so many places I couldn't go here in Oz so will wait for the time I can do the right thing by the dog.
When docking I like to keep the boat parallel to the wind or current set as long as possible so I can use the engine in forward or reverse to counter those forces. If you perpendicular, then you are at the mercy of the wind or current. In your situation, I would have driven past the slip in forward, then backed in, giving her some strong reverse throttle and aiming at the far pylon and waiting to turn to port as long as possible.
Exactly my thoughts! The tidal current over the rudder would have actually helped with steerage in reverse, and he would have had prop-walk to help pull the stern to port. I groaned when he said, "I have the theory down, I just need practice." Nope, sorry, wrong theory, bud. That was two years ago; I expect he'd do a lot better nowadays.
Our pup looks just like yours... And he sails with us too. Congrats on the new addition to your family. Oso is shaping up to be a great boat dog already ⛵
I am crying happy tears for you guys, this is so sweet! You’re doing everything right, introducing new experiences and making them happy and making sure he’s comfortable.
Captain Osso made my day ,have 2 cairn terriers who love sailing and now watch Osso
We like dogs and we don't like people who don't like dogs. We have two that live aboard and in spite of the extra work would never give them up. You will have joy every day, well done!
Some sailors use a designated coil of line for their dog to do his business on. Dragging it off the stern for a few miles cleans it right up.
Good idea I might try ! Sas goinfre to go for artificial grass….. Checked, itwork ‘s great on a balcony , soaking it behind the boat was also the idear
So happy for you and so happy for Captain Oso! Live your life the way you want too.
Getting your first dog is a moment of pure joy. I think we can all tell that Desiree is going to be a natural tireless mother.
Well, I watch a lot of sailing videos and it seems people who's pet dies or leaves the boat, makes their life a little easier. But I get it that you want some more action in your life to break up the monotony. Good luck
ok. only the cutest blooming thing on the planet. loving sharing the journey with you.
Perfect again. Thanks for the adventure. Be safe and have fun. Also not a mistake,
Awwwwwwww so cute. So happy for you THREE....Funny Jordan keeps calling him Buddy because he looks right now like our little dog who we named Buddy. Enjoy the love that only a puppy can bring us. Puppy love. Nothing like it.
I love dogs, but not on a world cruiser. Enjoy, he’ll be your new best friend!
can you believe it ...being jealous at that little dog😀😀... thats how i am feeling...good luck guy’s..give that little creature the time of its life .. enjoy it.. .😘
2:18 that other dog checking you all out is hilarious
😆
Wow. You guys are going to be great parents. You need to make many little dudes, the world needs more people like you.
should be called BUDDY as that's how you call him. love the dive in instinct, buddy will be fine.
Good Luck!
Good points!
Poodle mix breeds don't shed. Labs shed a lot! I've had both.
@@spray3716 what you mean to say is poodle mix breeds shed less. There is no such thing as a dog that doesn’t shed.
God Bless you and take care of your dog. The best friend you can ever have.
Some countries allow you to take your pets. Some you have to quarantine them. Some don't allow them at all.
Happy wife, happy life! Happy Happy Happy Happy! Congrats!
If crate training the ‘lil’dude’ it is a must to take them from the crate straight out to where they are meant to eliminate and then praise like crazy when they do.
Big Congrats! Osso is spectacular. A puppy is almost always a good idea. Let this be your new mantra... "it's his world; we're just here to serve."
Best video yet!!!! So happy for you guys & what an increase to our viewing pleasure! What a sweetheart!
Good call Jordan. That puppy bought you at 2 year delay on the baby
Lmao
Omygosh! Congratulations!!! What a Beautiful little guy. Welcome aboard Captain Oso.
PeaceAndLove

Getting a pet is a bad idea when your traveling the world. Just check out sailing Nanji and their dog problems. It's costing them $10,000 dollars to get it back home to australia. They listed off all the countries you CANNOT GO too, lots of the pacific and well Aus too and most of the indian ocean countries don't allow as well. Really think hard about this, and be prepared to leave it with someone else when you cannot take it to the next country. CHEERS Steve h.
This is the response i was hoping not to see (as i really want to travel with a dog) but kinda expected. Thankyou
One small dog for Atticus, one giant leap in subscribers for Jordan and Desiree.
Follow the Money….
Congrats on the new fur baby he's adorable and the boat is stellar.
Quote of the video: "Okay, I've got to get this poop to the lab." Just drop that in from time to time as a transition statement, hilarious!
That's the mellowist puppy I've ever seen!
I guess Australia is out of the question.
Great question: BEST idea ever or BIG MISTAKE? The only people that will be able to answer that question is you two. Let us know.
Honestly they are no longer capable of honestly answering. Any Dog on any boat is a terrible if not cruel addition
I have two 15 year olds aboard and they are my world, one of them is an Oso as well :)) cheers to boat dogs living their best lives!
Omg..the cutest..they are part of your family..they bring so much joy
The BEST Idea!!!! Congrats you guys I hope Jetty gets to meet him! :-)
Ooooo! I hope so too!!
This may be my favorite episode EVER. 🐶
So many bad memories of the sound of a barking dog drifting across a once quiet anchorage…all night long.
I can feel the love throughout the video...and can imagine it multiply when the new addition(s) to the family arrive. Aloha!
Test baby! ;)
Yay!! Welcome aboard Captain Oso!!
Good training for having a child. Get plenty of puppy pads. They gotta go somewhere. Hide your shoes and other chewy stuff 🤓
That is the cutest little darling dog EVER❤❤❤
They peed on the dude’s rug!
Man, that rug really tied the boat together.
Kudos to you guys!! You have now stepped across the threshold to the top notch !!! Most of the most popular channels, sailing or otherwise, all have...or have had pets! It shows your acceptance, as well as character! Look at the top channels! Zatara (cat) Tula (dog) Wynns (cats)
Shawn James (dog)...Many! I could go on and on! Even Steven Crowder! It shows so much compassion for something other than themselves!
Reilly (Wrollee & Ah..lan ..ah) & Allanah)...notice the drowl? Good for you guys!! Even better for the little guy that you just adopted! You will have no regrets! He's part of the family! Correction...he is the family! He will run your life! And that's okay! PS....I've been following "y'all" for years!
Getting a pet is common with young couples starting a family. Congratulations. South Pacific will be problematic.
... yep ... Capt. Oso is his proper name for sure ... he will definitely be in charge of the boat ... congratulations on your new crew ...
That's the end of sailing around the world for you guys. Good lock living on a boat that can't leave your country because of a dog. :( I am out.
Machiel: Good to see you go…..
So happy for you DOUBLE thumbs up ! congratulations on being a dog owner. Heart!!!!
Desiree at 2:19 : "I can't believe we got a dog".
Dog in background: "Who, me?"
@@69lure this is all probably true but don't be a debbie downer.
Cute puppy!! I drive an 18 wheeler around the country with my 70 lb German shorthair pointer, cant imagine life without him.
