In an earlier episode, you mentioned that you did t save money by buying a cheap boat that you ended up replacing and fixing everything; however, you couldn’t put a price on all the learning you gained by doing the work yourselves - don’t forget that - it’ll prove to be so much more invaluable later. All boats require constant maintenance and you’ve gained the knowledge and experience you’ll need on Atticus II. You’re equipped to handle so much more because of Atticus. All the best to you two in the new year - fair winds and following seas.

I think it is important to remember that all the trials, sweat, and tears that went into Atticus 1 are part of who you now are and what you now know. None of the armchair sailors out there who don’t own a boat or only weekend aboard really know what it is like to cruise and maintain a life aboard and at sea. What you have learned is invaluable and hard won jewels of knowledge. Don’t regret the choice you made with Atticus 1. There is no perfect boats, only the one you have. Regards.

As I am from Sweden, and have 15+years experience from working with most Swedish crafted boats, as well as I worked for Tropica Marine in Florida for 4:years as Marine electrician, I highly recommend to also look at Hallberg Rassy, Malö Yachts and Fantasi yachts from Sweden. Najad (also made in Sweden) is a good choise. All those boats are made by super skilled craftsmen and is by far superior to everything I saw in Florida. Happy New Year / Leif and Karin.

As far as I am from Finland and have not any experiece from working with any Finnish crafted boats (by the way I own a swedish Amigo sailingboat -76), I highly recommend to also look at Swan, Nauticat and Degerö -yachts from Finland. Baltic Yachts (also made in Finland) is a good choice (for those with limitless possibilities; definately not for me). All those boats are made by super skilled craftsman.
And if you ever come to sail in european waters, don't miss the archipelago on the east coast of Sweden! Finland has also nice archipelago, but can not beat Swedish equivalent.
Happy New Year for you, for Leif and Karin and all the others.

Excellent analysis of your situation (past goals/perceptions vs experienced realities) - and, as I’m sure you have concluded, all of the experience you have gained by rehabbing/maintaining/modifying Atticus will put you miles ahead, in terms of setting realistic goals and keeping your self-confidence, of your cruising peers who started their life on the water in a new or well-maintained used boat. I’m resigned now to the reality that I will never follow in your wake but I am thrilled at your progress, and your present prospects. You are the most self-aware cruisers currently on UA-cam, IMHO. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

In 2003 I bought a FD12 50ft sloop and we spent 5 years cruising in her while home schooling our two kids onboard. They were 6 and 9 when we left the East Coast of the USA and we ended our voyage in New Zealand. Moonshadow was 30 years old when we bought her. I would do that again in a heart-beat. I have just bought a 1983 Catalac catamaran and we will complete the Great American Loop in her. Best of luck in your quest. By the way, FD12's were built in Taiwan at what is now the Tayana yard.

Second try pronouncing Najad was the better one....."Na-jad"! Its a superwell built boat. So much effort and craftmanship is put into ALL the areas in the boat, not only the shiny interior customers look at at the boat dealer. The hidden areas are just as well designed and furbished. No raw fiberglass anywhere. Best cabinets, hinges and locks available. The keel area is designed to hit rocks. And best of all, it is super seaworthy tested in the North Atlantic seas for so many decades. You can never go wrong with the Najad , Malö or Hallberg Rassy! Good Luck with looking for new boat.....its really fun! Looking forward to see what You will choose! You have very good points!

  • @SeaDarer
    @SeaDarer 3 роки тому

Jordan & Desiree, you're boat criteria are impeccable and will serve you very well especially that buying a boat with good systems. A fin keel, skeg rudder & cutter rigging is the best combination that you could ask for. Also, you correctly noted that technology has improved and that includes the type of fiberglass & resins. Because of this, I would suggest thinking as new as you can but also look at the technology of the hull materials. Lastly, the mantra of no teak excepting in the cockpit is great and will save maintenance tremendously. All in all good choices and good luck with it.

Oh! We're on a Pacific Seacraft 37! She is very sea kindly. But her sleek lines make for not very much storage below compared to other designs. We've lived on her full time for four months now, and we find her easy to live on despite the smaller interior. She is also built well. Almost none of the original 30-year old hardware has ever been rebedded, but none of it is leaking. There is no plywood in the hull, so no problems with rot if there was a leaking chainplate. But no plywood in the hull means that in our Canadian waters, we get more condensation below the water line. She is a strong, lively ship, but I feel that the price point may have been a bit high.

Great videos. You have helped an old sailor fix an old relatively cheap (1969) boat. Great ideas for Atticus 2. Keel design and Cutter rig spot on (I need to retro fit the inner forestay). Full glassed keel and not too deep on draft also good idea. All the best for the search and happy 2021 from NSW .Aust.

Thank you for breaking down priorities to have in searching for a new sailboat. I remember when I had to say good by to our sweet Hunter 34 "January's Child" She is a good boat and I miss her.

This was a tough episode to watch. On May 26, 2018 I closed my companion way for the last time and rowed across Keehi Small Boat Harbor to the dingy Dock, never to see my “Amazing Grace” again.

Got ahead of myself and had to return to watch this video to the end! SO FRICKIN EXCITED FOR YOU TWO. Don't knock yourself to hard on the purchase of Atticus as I feel like your forgetting your budget was pretty tight back then and if I remember correctly it was an all cash situation with you not wanting to finance the purchase? You are for sure in a different place in your life now. Almost 200K viewers, holy crap! Not to mention the knowledge gained from all of the DYI investment is priceless.

I'm looking forward to the new year and the new Project Atticus. You two are the most hard working couple that I can think of. You deserve whatever luxury may come your way. I hope you get the best bluewater boat out there. If I were a millionaire I'd buy it for you and your future family. Take Care and Happy New Year!

If you are looking for Najad's you may also consider Halberg rasssy's, and Malö's, which are strong blue water boats from Sweden. Hans Christian boats built in Korea but design in the US, is also a big favorite of mine. I would look for a keel design, with a glassed in lead keel, which will give you a "no-worry" design over a iron keel hung underneath the body. Sailing in waters with high salt content can give problems between the hull and the keel, an area that is very difficult to inspect. I hope you will find your new dream boat soon, Good hunting

We cruise with an 11 year old, 2 dogs and a cat; you will need a lot more space than you think for 2 kids :) . Would have loved a Pacific Seacraft 40, it checked off a lot of boxes. Ultimately, we went with a Pearson 422, as it met the criteria but left more money in the cruising kitty. You observations on owning an older boat are spot on. If you can get one that has just gone through a refit or was well maintained, it can be a deal. But so many dreams die in the boat yard as owners try to get an old boat perfect. Good luck.

Your requirement identical to ours, after living aboard a Lagoon 470 we wanted to move to a monohull, but did not want to loose the view. We ended up with a Wauquiez PS40 (was Beneteau), it's actually closer to a 42, but apart from the teak deck ticks most of your boxes and has a proper DS. After 5 years of ownership and many upgrades, I can say it's easy to work on and built like a tank. The down side being the teal deck, which can be ok if it's been well looked after. You should be able to get on early 2000 for around the $120,000 mark.

The Tayana has some rigging design benefits over other cutters. It has diamond stays up top that remove the need for aft running check stays. Cutters with running back/check stays make for sailing down wind funky because you cannot let out your boom very far unless you have movable checkstays (which is more work and maintenance).
