    Ok there’s no Tesla Vision Pro goggles (yet!) but Tesla Vision Park Assist is always getting updates so here I try out the latest version with my new 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range refresh - also known as “Highland”
    In my opinion it is at last as good if not better than the cars with Ultrasonic Parking sensors. Seems to judge distances and proximity quite nicely but also shows kerb edges well.
    The only issue is small objects low down below bonnet edge/front bumper.
    I compare to 2022 HW 3 model 3 to see if HW4 higher definition cameras offer any more.
    Also compared to 2019 car which does have parking sensors.
    Hope you enjoy and find it useful

      I notice no improvement against my 2023 Model Y (HW 3.x). If it rains or the cameras are wet, I can barely do anything. On my old Audi with ultrasound sensors, I can park blind and raining that it works fine. For such advanced cars it is a miss not to have ultrasound sensors.

      @@MikeDWinter Intermittently. The problem for the AI when there are multiple types of sensors is how does it reconcile different signals from the different types of sensors? One says 10 inches and the other says 16 inches. Erm, which do I display on screen? One says there's something just behind me and the other says not. Erm... E.g. wire mesh fence, often missed by USS but seen clearly by camera but if seen by both differently, which does it take as "true"? That's what the Tesla engineers said was the reason why they decided to go with one type of sensor and optimise it to the max. We're only part way there yet.

    I really wish someone would test Tesla vision at night, particularly when it's raining - this is where i expect it will fail miserably under these various tests.

    • @achillesworks
      @achillesworks Місяць тому +1

      Someone tested it in pitch black (headlights off), and the results were remarkable. While the accuracy went down, the car still would not let the user hit anything as it was just being over cautious. Seems like Tesla vision cameras shift into infrared, so they are able to maintain proper performance even in zero visibility conditions. Otherwise, they do have coating and anti-reflection films to avoid water or snow sticking to them or reflection/flares from confusing them.

    • @blower1
      @blower1 Місяць тому +1

      @@achillesworks Rubbish - my 2022 M3P can see hardly anything out of the rear view camera if it's been raining, it's just a blurry mess. If my car wasn't one of the last that was fitted with USS then it would never make anything out on tesla vision when it came to the rear camera in wet dark conditions.

    • @AcidGubba
      @AcidGubba 7 днів тому

      @@blower1 A new technology is always worse at the beginning than the mature old technology. But you can see the progress. If you compare it with the USS that was used after 2-3 years of development, then Vision would be much better.
      It is also logical why the USS was removed, because it is assumed that a person drives based on what they see. As a human, you can't see directly in front of the hood, but almost everyone can park without really seeing what is in front of them. In the long term, Tesla Vision is far superior to ultrasonic sensors. I bet the cm specifications will come soon.

    As a Mercedes driver I cannot see that Tesla Vision in anyway matches the 360 camera and parking sensor combination. The EQE SUV has better graphics than the EQC so has thé see through bonnet function as well. I prefer to have the actual 360 deg camera system which incl side cameras so you can see the kerbs. Tesla vision looks overly complicated why turn everything into graphics when you have the actual image for high res cameras. The Mercedes system is ok dark too as it is highly sensitive so can give an image in very low light. Great video and the channels content is excellent for the balanced approach you take. More comparisons of Tesla v competitors products would be useful too.

      They don't have enough cameras/in the right places for a view all the way round the cameras though, that's why it has to be more complicated to produce this. There's no camera directly on the front of the car (only at the top of the windscreen, so the bonnet obscures things for some distance) and no camera covering the area around the front wheels from the side either, as the middle pillar cameras do face mostly forwards but are still angled slightly outwards (so the disappearing area next to the kerb at 15:15 probably has something to do with that, although it still seems odd)

      Thats exactly the problem, because the software actually performs quite good in 95% of all cases, it is then even more surprising that in rare cases it fails even the easiest tasks. We had a couple of people now that claimed that the software works awesome only to find themselves hitting a sign or scraping the wall. So I wish you good luck in the near future. I would advise ALL Vision driver to be careful and to not trust the software completely because it is going to fail sooner than later.
      And if you want proof that the software is not ready yet just check if you can park it automatically yet. You can't because Tesla even admits it that Vision is just not good enough yet. Also a reason why they removed the cm/in-indication. Makes ist much harder to compare ;)

    At 11:16 it would be interesting to know whether the hose reel was still visible on the camera when you got really close to it and it disappeared from Tesla Vision (you didn't show the view from the cameras either time)
    Also the leftover bin visualisation seems to be coming from the old visualisation system rather than the Occupancy Network (as it's an actual 3D model of a bin, and that system does have a habit of remembering things that have been moved away, as well as placing things in the wrong position in space, which seems to be much less of an issue with the new Occupancy Network-based system)
    And same with the person in the next bit as well (again you can see it's a 3D model of a person), for some reason they're not being detected/shown by the Occupancy Network/Tesla Vision/High-Fidelity Park Assist (whichever you want to call it) which would be why there's no "parking sensor" type warning when you get close, but when you properly drive at them, the existing Automatic Emergency Braking system kicks in based on its (older) way of recognising pedestrians in your path
    Oh interesting that the HW3 car (without USS) actually did pick the person up via Occupancy Network as well as the old system (which you can tell because there's also a "blob" on top of the 3D model person, and then of course the coloured warnings etc)

    The scenario in which I need the car to detect people very close to the car and it happens quite often is when I'm in a large parking lot at a large commercial center and people walk by the cars to the their car - so I start the engine and for a second a I look away from the window to find something or talk to someone besides me and then someone suddenly walks in front of the car just when I'm about to hit the acceleration. I'm glad my parking sensors warn me that someone is in front of the car. Even more so when the shopping cart gets in front of the car and so the person pushing it is even more into my peripheral view.

    Can already tell this will be a nightmare to park with when I get mine. Here in Portugal it's very common to have to either park on very short parallel parking spaces, or in spaces where there are obstacles that only the front sensors would pick up because they're below your eye sight. Also heard that the turning radius is not the greatest, which will make it even more interesting...

    Why Tesla just didn't add a front camera and a camera under each wing mirror on this new version still baffles me. That would have given a proper 360 surround view in full colour which is far better. Its a super helpful system and works well for things like drive-thrus and parallel parking where you can see exactly where the kerbs are so you don't scuff your wheels :)
    Tesla still can't get the basics right and are trying to fix a problem that didn't exist. That rear camera gets filthy in Winter after a few hundred yards and of course, they ommited a camera washer which many other makes have. To me, a proper, modern 360 camera is like a top end ipad with its sharp and detailed screen. This Tesla vision is like one of those cheap kids 'my first tablet' devices which seem generations out of date, and in mono colour with bad graphics.

      I agree that a proper 360 surround view would be great, but from what I've heard, it's at least partly because Nissan has a patent on that system so Tesla would have to pay licensing fees etc, which they don't like doing (and is apparently what other manufacturers with 360 camera systems do, pay Nissan for the license). I'm glad that Tesla are now at least trying to do something to approximate it rather than not bothering at all though!

Not one fault, even the tires on the front which where never changed ( new rears last September ) are okay and the brakes no wear at all because of the regeneration breaking... MY OPINION THE TESLA MODEL 3 IS PROBABLY THE BEST VALUE NEW CAR ON THE MARKET I LOVE DRIVING IT. I WOULD THOROUGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANYBODY.. I will begrudgingly admit that it’s improved to the point of a black and white version of grand theft auto circa 1997 on the ps1 with wobbly graphics. It’s now usable. Is it better than a full colour video 360 feed with USS (a good implementation, ie Mercedes, Audi, BMW etc)? Nope, nowhere close. There’s also a fair bit of latency as the camera feeds the processor and then it has to guess in what things are causing some things to disappear or pop in. The fact it doesn’t show proximity to a person or warn you is worrying as this is not just a tech demo, it’s a safety system to stop you driving into hosereels, non descript walls or even small children. Sometimes isn’t good enough.

    • @AllanSustainabilityFan
      @AllanSustainabilityFan 3 місяці тому

      I would argue that most 360 vision stuff is highly unreliable and inferior to this. Generally they tend to be a gimmick, but there are some implementations that are a bit better than the average.
      In short, for simple scenarios they are comparable, but for more advanced scenarios such as parking between pillars and such, the vision generally does a better now.
      Having used this version for a while now, there is no way I would substitute it for a 360 alternative.
      The previous version of Tesla's vision solution though was not up to snuff, I'm glad they finally addressed that.

    Had a model Y for about a year now. Having no USS is not an issue 99% of the time.
    If I were to level a criticism, it would be the lack of front USS allied with a poor turning circle in general means that turning forward 90⁰ into, say, a tight supermarket parking space leaves the front corners at risk.

      I have been using it with my M3 at night and in the rain (in the UK so lots of rain) to reverse onto my drive. It works well for me even when the frequent "camera is degraded warning comes up" and I've got a blurred rear camera from driving through the rain for an hour. I live in the countryside so its mostly pitch black except for light coming from the windows in my house and neighbours houses, through curtains. Overall I've been impressed. I have another petrol car that just has audible parking sensors and rudimentary graphic display (but with larger mirrors and better visibility all round) and I find the Tesla the easiest to park at night regardless of the weather.

    I wonder how well Tesla Vision works in direct sunlight with camera off-line because its being oversaturated by bright light, or in heavy rain when the camera lens is obscured by water droplets. In Winter, my Model Y door pillar cameras are regular wiped out by direct sunlight, and motorway self-drive goes off-line, especially as the sun is at low elevation at higher latitudes, as in the UK. And try reversing your Tesla on to your drive immediately after driving along a wet road, if you haven't got out of the car and wiped the rear camera lens first. Cameras operating in the normal visual spectrum are clearly an important self-driving component, but they are not very good when visibility is poor e.g. wet weather, or there is bright sunlight in their field of view. Tesla's are great cars, but it does make me nervous when I am sitting at traffic lights and I am looking at my Model Y's cars view of what surrounds it, and a car immediately next to it in an adjacent lane suddenly disappears from my Model Y's view of the world, but it's still there in reality, other than it moved into a virtual blind spot between a couple of my Model Y's cameras. I think it is short sighted to limit the array of sensors available to a car for full self-driving operation, and for this reason I think Telsa's full self-driving capability will never get out of beta, other than achieve some manufacturing cost savings. For a reliable all-weather full self-driving operation, you need to augment cameras with automatic lens cleaning and adjustable apertures / bright light level control mechanism (low light operation is generally good on my Tesla), plus lidar, radar, infra-red vision, and possibly ultrasonics, and off course great AI (including powerful GPUs / NPUs) to build a real-time 360 3D 'field of view' of the space surrounding the car.
