  • When we tested Tesla video before it wasn’t brilliant. Actual sensors were better but they are no longer fitted.
However Tesla always release software updates, so is it better yet?
Here we find out. Is Tesla vision better than parking sensors yet?

Sure, but this is also the reason the USA leads Europe in software development. The USA goes straight to market with a prototype and develops much faster and better than the Europeans that spend years trying to perfect the software to be released, only for it to be outdated and useless once it is out.

More likely the AI will learn to see what the cameras see and also be able to calculate how far the car has moved.
But since everything is dependent on AI or FSD in some way, it goes hand in hand and therefore development is at a standstill on things like this.
Humans have no sensors which are quite primitive as they do not know what they see but only know/feel that "something" is in front of the sensor.

The front cameras just don't have the resolution or low light performance to perform this task. As the say in the classics - garbage in, garbage out. IMO it's unacceptable in this day and age to launch an expensive car without proper parking assistance aids. I have no doubt vision "could" work but you would need vastly superior cameras at the front and there would still be edge cases where ultrasonics are superior (eg heavy rain, mud splashed on the lens etc). Have learned to never rely on the front collision warning the hard way. Ever so slightly bumped into a pillar in a parking ramp similar to your test in the first few minutes of the video where you were backing in. The backup detection is better, and I can also actually see if I am about to collide with an object with the camera. The camera in the top of the windshield simply isn't good enough to fill the roll of a parking sensor especially without me being able to camera view what is in front of me.

Me again, the tree stump test is valid of course. It is very common to have low level barriers marking out parking places. They disappear from the drivers view and can then cause damage to the front fender/bumper. I guess it is a trade off with a low fender mounted camera - less risk of doing damage to the fender but possibly more cost if one does do so.

Hi Richard, kudos for the follow up. In principle vision only should work, it has been used in quadcopters/drones for a quite some time now. But the cameras need to be able to see the object at some point in the approach. If they then lose sight the details should still be held in memory and the car knows where it is in relation to the object as it monitors distance travelled and steering angle. High quality dual pixel cameras can also accurately measure distance without need a second camera to triangulate. That is now quite common on decent still and video cameras. I have seen reports that the cameras used are now cheaper than Ultra sonic detectors - which I find surprising. I suspect this is all part of a Value Engineering drive - maybe Sandy Munro had a hand in it? It's still not fit for purpose in my opinion. Not so much of a problem when reversing, there is good high quality camera coverage there, but going forward we need a camera mounted low on the fender/bumper. We also need coverage of where the front wings are in relation to obstacles, especially given the somewhat restricted turning circle on some Teslas. It's a work in progress but launched too early I think, I suspect Tesla are using these cars and owners as beta testers, collecting info from the onboard telematics. Again, thanks for the follow up. If I do decide on a pre-owned Long range MY rather than a new RWD I'm coming to your firm. Your objective videos are very, very helpful and I thank you for all the trouble making them.

Even the version with parking sensors was way worse than other systems I've used. The VW group cars I've had have beeps that get louder and more frequent the closer you get and consider the steering angle so the object shows on the screen, but doesn't beep unless it's in your path (2016 Skoda). The ID3 I have (much worse car than Model 3 in lots of ways) developed that so that the beep uses surround sound and comes from the direction you're closest to hitting.
The Tesla vision system is better in reverse than forward, but is highly inconsistent. When manoeuvring on my drive, it regularly shows me driving right through the middle of other cars when I'm clear of them and doesn't warn when I'm on target to collide. It's also so slow to start up that I've often manoeuvred out of the drive or parking space before it's working at all.
Fortunately I'm so old that I learned to drive without them so I use my eyes and mirrors but it took a while to get out of the habit of using sensors after having them for over 10 years. Not enough for me to reject the car (they took 9 months to deliver it and sensors were on the spec list when I ordered). I'm going to need a long test drive to convince me to choose another one without the indicator stalk.

Our own testing and the testing of many of our members leads to the conclusion that the rear camera is not employed for vison assist parking. We know that it is not part of the Autopilot architecture and therefore things approaching directly from the rear won't be seen. This is also true for Sentry, so 'threats' at the rear will not trigger it. When this is considered, it is pretty remarkable how Tesla get around this by extrapolating the images from the rearward facing fender cameras to produce a halfway accurate result when reversing. It is much better at this when the parking position is approached at an angle. This makes sense as it gives the fender cams a better view of objects which, once seen it tries to maintain a virtual picture of when objects disappear from view. This also explains why the 'vision assist degraded' message appears often when first getting in the car. This covers for any changes to the position of objects or new objects since the vehicle was parked as these would not been seen by the rear camera. The same can be said of the front camera too with it's blind spot directly in front of the bumper. It's not clear why the rear view camera is not part of the Autopilot set up. It is just a bog standard fish eye reversing camera, meant just for the driver (hence the better colour representation than the other cams - although Tesla have improved these too with the latest software release). We know that the Autopilot cams see the world very differently to what is represented on the screen for human consumption, so perhaps the rear cam is not capable of meeting this standard due to it's design been for mere mortals and not Autopilot. Be great to see a video testing blind spot limitations as per above and this might go someway to help frustrated owners understand the inconsistency of vision assist parking???

Not quite up to date. I'm on 2023.32.6 which has improvements on visualization of objects and cars. I also found out that the cameras are more accurate if you start recalibration of the cameras after an update. But I still can confirm, front is more messed up than behind.the rear distance is mostly pretty accurate.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to put front sensors on "Highland" than a new, low camera? Or are they moving the high camera down low to keep the cost the same? I'm a new Model Y driver with Tesla-vision. Just being extra careful. The rear camera is excellent, so no need for sensors there.
