just food for thought. Instead of using a solid 4x4 for the beam if you used 1x4's and laminated them together to create the beam it will have less flex and if a split was to occur it would stop when it hit the next layer since most cracks follow the grain. This way you could also use a hard wood like oak or ash as they don't normally come in a 4x4 material. and it will also be way less app to warp. Not knocking what you are doing. This build is inspiring me to maybe make one along this design. keep up the good work.

Hardwood beam is a great idea. Oak , ash , elm. I'm a timber framer who needs a power hammer for pounding ash ( for splints ) and this design is perfect for what I need. I've never liked lam beams compared to solid timber. Don't like PT wood. Yellow pine can be great wood. Especially old growth , heartwood, but the crap they cut now is terrible quality. Shrinkage would be an issue here too.

Good morning Roy. Great videos thanks for taking the time to make them. What type of wood do you use to make your beam hammer. Thanks God bless.

Any problems with the hinge point? Also any loosening , ( tear-out) with the hammer bolts. I'll probably use hardwood beam but love the design overall. Might add some weight/ mass to the anvil part.

Roy, why did you use wood and not metal for the beams. can i use metal? jeff

+Jeff Tiberio the reason for using wood instead of metal was for the garage or hobbyist Smith as wood seems to be less daunting to acquire and cut to size for most people. You most certainly can redesign this in All Steel and it would work just as well if not better as the ram weight would be considerably heftyier. Thank you for the great question God bless you and good luck on your build :-)
