You pointed out something that most people forget when building anything, "How much is my time worth, how much are my tools used worth?", it amazes me how many people fail to understand that simple concept.

Don’t people know how to shop? Hydraulic hoses $800 for 4 to 6 hoses is a joke. Go to your local tractor/farm supply store 36” hose $15 to $20 each. Just one example. Use universal parts good quality but limited size choices. You need 19”, you might have to use 20 or 24”. Just think smart, and you can build it quick and inexpensive.
dont forget the 600 dollars for scrap metal....anyone who is selling what their talking about cannot give a unbiased opinion....hence hes talking the cost way way way up...
I built my own...in that I learned a lot it pushed me to think of the possibilities and ways you can do things out side the box.
You nailed it on the head , power hammers aren’t cheap. I’m 80% done with my leaf spring hammer and it was more than I imagined. Burned up my metabo grinder today now got get another. Just things like nuts bolt bearings sheaves motors ect. But I’m enjoying the experience.

Amen on the amount of head scratching that goes into designing a hammer mine is at 5 months of looking for cheap stuff , thinking , drawing , buying and than do it all again and again lol more time than money in my case and having a blast BUY plans folks would have been way easier !!!¡!!! Yeah, took me five months to plan, build, redesign, and debug my 30lbs powerhammer, and just when I was done, I found and picked up a used 100lbs powerhammer for a 1000 bucks from a shop investing in a new one. Will still cost me another 1000 for the new foundations and other stuff, but I'm still pretty sure that considering time and effort, it was actually by faaar the cheaper one.

The huge upside to building a hammer like your’s for me is... I can fix it myself. Out here in Timbuktu, Alaska that is a huge benefit. The only thing on that hammer I’d have to buy is the carrier bearings/ motor and to be honest... I could prolly find the motor on the cheap used. 3.99? Or 399.00?

The cost of time and the cost of tools is huge! When you are starting out and have no plans, no tools, basically no experience that stuff gets expensive quickly and if things go catastrophically wrong then add the cost of a little trip to the ER and what you are left with is money spent and no hammer or press. Get some experience using hand tools first and some tools that work for you and once you get the experience then decide whether to buy or make your other tools.
You should maybe add SKILL SET into the list of variables.....just sayin'

I am building a Frankenhammer out of scrap i have around. It already cost me $130 for the lumber that it will sit on. So yeah, it's not easy building cheap as some might say

you did not mention on american maker of powerhammers, you forgot big blue, kz from kens custom iron, the ka 50, chambersburg ajax ceco, and bailee,
sure building one takes time, but its also a good way to save a bit of coin, and test ones skills in building and engineering, and if you build it you know exactly what it is made of and its limits.
if you know what you are doing and the material strength that is. That is as you have pointed out about the press blowing.

I see your style as far as the business aspect and overhead cost is alot of micro managing, which is good for profits but can kill time and production. I'm not knocking it, we all use what works for us, I do not micro manage, although one does need to be aware of overhead cost vs incoming money.

$850 is cheap. Much cheaper than $12,000.
Used 220 12 hp motors can be had often for 50 bucks or less... mine is a 72 year old motor that once opened and closed irrigation gates. Well maintained everyday of its life. Also I scavenge and haul metal that is too heavy for residents, farmers and work sites to pay to move. I take it for free.
The heavier the better. I've seen powerhammers made with such thin materials that the whole hammer rocks like a rocking chair, That is a waist of energy and I suspect those hammers will rock themselves apart before too long. A pro made hammer seems to weigh a lot, for obvious reasons.

Hey the wood types are pretty common in hammer presses they are designed to absorb the shock in the wood where as if it was made of steel it wood possibly be dangerous and fly apart just letting you know granted that they were common place way way way back when the press was a new concept
why dont you sell what you made in kit including everything plus directions for 1500$ It be easier for everyone.
Well ill leave it up to the "maker triangle" to decide. "Cheap, Good, Fast:" and you can only pick 2! So i disagree, you can easily build a power hammer for little to no budget, and if you include costs of tools when then every project costs hundreds of euros. But you need the experience and the connections to do so. Getting friends to keep an eye out for thrown out motors, Steel etc!
