  • In this video, I share my thoughts on the Beam Hammer. The beam hammer is a diy power hammer that you can build from wood.

I love the beam hammer -- great engineering, clever design! You thought of all the stress points and made allowance and reinforcement for them. Kudos. Bought the plans, and as I noted in my purchase note, I'll be miniaturizing it for texturing copper jewelry, as I can't hand hammer any more.

We are going to start trying to build our own this week coming up if we have the time. Thank you for all your test and trials to make this alittle easier for all of us. Have a blessed day.

Looks great. Can't wait to try. It's going to be a long time off before I can justify The Twelve Grand for a power hammer but I definitely could use one

Works well Roy! I am currently building a vertical hammer as I do not have room for a beam hammer, but if you have the space that option makes a lot of sense!

Don't let any nitpickers grind you down, your hammer designs are perfect for a guy like me. I'm a very occasional hobbyist smith with very limited space. I really enjoy hammering by hand, but I work with a lot of scrap/reclaimed iron and steel (read: stuff that usually isn't the ideal thickness or dimensions for what I need) and don't have all day to beat material to size. I have a middling woodworking skill-set and beginner's in welding.
I say all that to emphasize how much your designs speak to jack-of-all-trades workshop junkies like myself. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford a commercially made power hammer (both in terms of space and cost), but I can get what I need done quickly at a fraction of the cost. I don't know if you bother reading the comments section, but thank you for taking the time and energy to share your designs as well as everything you show on the channel.

+John Holden thank you very much for all your encouragement! I read every single comment that people leave on the channel sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worst LOL. It's people like you that give me the encouragement to continue to explore new options for Smith's like myself and for the beginners and hobbyist alike. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and encourage me on this cold winter day :-) God bless you and all your endeavors and have a Happy New Year

Makes me wish I had room and a good excuse to build one.

+Black Bear Forge oh come on don't you have enough :-) LOL? It's definitely a fun build but kind of like a puzzle so it's challenging. I just enjoy building these things to help other guys out understand the process better and that they don't have to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars for one. I hope you're healing well buddy God bless you and thank you for the great comment

Hi, Black Bear Forge. Lugh’s mom here in CT. I am fascinated by the very idea of building your own power hammer! Roy’s channel is great, isn’t it?

Almost finished with mine. I just need to get the cam drawn on cad and sent off to be laser cut. Once Thats done and I get the parts back I can finish my hammer. Can’t wait. Great design Roy

Hopefully some day I'll be able to buy your plans to build one only part I see me have problems with would be making a bearing for one

    • @ChristCenteredIronworks
      @ChristCenteredIronworks  6 років тому +1

+Randy Nyman if you bring all of the pieces of the cam pre-cut to a welder of any mention they should be able to knock this together for you in about 20 minutes flat. And maybe an hour or two for all the pieces to be assembled. So you still have options :-) thank you for watching this video and God bless you for a great comment

I like the beam hammer most of all. It has a primitive old world flavor to it

  • @leegates3072

So wondering if the beam hammer needs to be anchored to the floor or could it be mounted to a large timber base and not bounce around much?

Christ Centered Ironworks exactly for beginner they look like this very difficult piece of Machinery but honestly it's just pillow block bearings and pulleys and a couple other spare bits thrown in

I'm not trying to be a naysayer however I can see at 4:40 that your beam has a worn out plate on the striking surface. The surface on the right side is clearly thinner than the left. If you look at more professionally designed examples online you'll see areas of buckle designed to allow a rolling surface when compressed, to smash your metal out with. Check out some old Little Giant plans or the way that anyang hammers work. I know somebody else who makes a tire Hammer plan which has a head design just as comparable to those commercial companies, but since he sells plans as well (no affiliation or referral here, I've never bought a plan nor will I. Atop that, he didn't invent concept anyhow) and I don't want to throw shade on nobody else's chanel , will go unmentioned here.
If you get some time to work with cheap steel and a design a head that looks similar to crappy cars scissor jack that applies spring tension proportionate to force of downswing....
You lose an inkling of impact per strike but your surface will stay level as it applies pressure to the metal. For any intricate work with thin material this is crucial. Hell we ain't gotta tell you, look at how quick that thing chopped through length steel using a common fuller😅🤠
Who needs the guillotine when you got that much whack coming behind something simple.
