AWESOME JOB!! Thanks so much, there are many sailing budget videos out there but you guys have nailed it! that was a well researched and wonderfully presented. helps to keep my own dream alive. THANK YOU
Cruising costs as much as you have or as little as you want to spend. All depends on the lifestyle you want to live. I cruised my 33ft, steel, pilothouse cutter ($40k) singlehanded for 7 years including a 40,000 mile circumnavigation on an average of $10,000./year. Went south of the capes (cape horn and cape of good hope) so I didn't have any transit fees. No sat phone and pay as you go cell phone. Did all my own maintenance, used my bicycle for most all transportation, spent only 4 days tied to a dock and did 2 haul-outs/refits. Sold my boat for what I paid for it after I moved ashore. I admit, I lived very modestly based on my philosophy of minimizing my footprint on the planet. Go small and go now! It is an awesome lifestyle!
You guys have the right idea. I speak as a 50 year veteran as a small craft professional mariner, two round trips to French Polynesia from the west coast of North America and South America. Rule of thumb for you dreamers: get the smallest boat you think you can be comfortable (Relative term!) on; keep the equipment to the minimum necessary because it will all go to shit one day; expect to be uncomfortable at times; no matter how well you plan, there will be surprises; you are not guaranteed to wake up tomorrow. Be bold and go.
Really refreshing to watch a straight up, no punches pulled documentary on crucial facets of blue water cruising. Congratulations to this couple for a clear and concise video. Well done.
Have been privileged to be part of the offshore cruising community for 40 years. I admire and respect your attitude toward financial responsibility and priorities.
Great video showing the backend costs that underlie the front of house glamour. Liked the reminder that we don't see EVERYTHING regarding your sailing lives. I love your Britishness with lots of Tea and playing boardgames (never seen THAT anywhere else). A wonderful channel which is well presented.
So basically it's a lot like living on land. If you cook at home and fix things yourself it's not that expensive. I notice a lot of sailing videos are of cruisers eating out, partying and getting drunk. That's why I like your videos, it's about experiencing the world up close. Thanks for the background and info.
Thanks guys.Great job. We spent 6 years living on a boat in the Caribbean and your numbers look similar. The best payments are the continuing memories.Fair Winds. David
Reading some comments here, most are saying they thought it would cost more. For some reason i thought it would be less. Especially being so frugal. I guess i was thinking with No Rent, Electric/gas, Car Payment/ Registration, Water, Waste Removal, Property Taxes, no monthly Cable TV, and monthly Phone Bill it would be closer to a grand a month. Living as frugal as you do that is. Thank you so much for sharing this info, this was very informative.
joe bosco I’ve been researching this topic for a while and thought it spot on. There are those that spend less but usually on 30’ or less with less systems, etc. Just the cost of bottom paint almost doubles with each time you add 5 ft in LOA. Same for moorage, lines, etc.
As a social river racing sailor(34' S&S) , (& retired merchant mariner of advanced years), I found the videos of your Pacific Ocean crossing absolutely riveting & so envious of your wonderful lifestyle. Wish I was 50 years younger1 Safe sailing. Thanks & regards. Lindsay Goodwin, Kalamunda, Perth Hills, Western Australia.
Thanks for being so open about your expenses, 37 ft seems to be the magic number for comfort v costs when cruising. I admire the ease in which you live your remarkable lives together.
Well Matt & Amy, We knew the old adage of a boat and it's yearly costs being very high, but this chapter was most enlightening. Sailing 'close to a budget' gives us the bluntest eye-opener. You two are a great example to just how it CAN be managed. Well done. Vernon & Joanne, Arizona, USA.
I was reluctant for many years to buy a boat because of the cost of keeping a boat. I heard so many people talk about how expensive owning a boat was: "a boat buck" was $1000, a boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money". We sailed our first boat around the Great Lakes on a very low budget. Doing a lot of the maintenance and repair work yourself is a huge savings. We now have an ocean cruising boat $35000 and anticipate $20000 in upgrades. We have sufficient financial reserves to cover unexpected maintenance or replacement of the things we are not repairing or replacing. One of our big fears was health insurance while in the US, which is quite expensive, but we found decent health insurance for outside the US that will cost the two of us $800 a year. Everything tastes better on a boat so food costs can be low.
Just found you guys while relaxing in front of the fireplace.... it's cold in 🇨🇦 right now! 4.5 yrs from retirement & full-time liveabord sailing. Best explanation of costs as you made great effort to explain your lifestyle choices. Thanks for helping us build our confidence to do this liveaboard life. We will start following you. Fair winds and all the best for 2020!
This really puts things into perspective. For many people with the dream to sail or people just starting out, like us, this is super helpful! Thank you!
As I am currently in the early stages of planning to start a life on the ocean, this very thorough rundown of costs is incredibly helpful. I had so far no idea about what to expect and now I at least know about a rough estimate of what to expect and why.
Fantastic guys, that has to be the most informative video on costs for sailing around the world on UA-cam. Excellently presented, broken down in a very understandable manner and exceptionally well explained, legends, the pair of you.

@@Pyndle $17k is super frugal for a couple sailing. However it all depends on where you go, mode of transport, speed you travel at and the activities/luxuries you use along the way. Used to be able to travel slowly in India and Nepal for total budget $10 to $15 per day about 12 years ago. Guessing $20 to $25 is do-able today in India/Nepal. I reckon once all set up cycle touring and stealth wild camping a lot of the time could prob average no more than $30 to $40 per day in most countries. Since getting married rent and local property tax alone is about $16,800, that's before gas/electric food, car, clothes etc.
There are dozens of videos on UA-cam detailing the cost of sailing around the world, but you have produced the best one on the topic that I have seen. Great job. Lots of great tips here on how to experience such an amazing life on a budget, and inspiring, positive attitudes. All of us who have taken up adventure traveling, and lived away from family for any length of time, know how hard that can be, but you will have incredible tales to take back when you are once again reunited some day.
After watching a few various sailing videos, I'll say this is one of the best for real and very usable information, especially for those of more modest means. Especially like the bit about choosing a smaller boat in better condition than a larger boat that will need repairs who knows when or where. I get the sense you two are sailing round the world because you enjoy most aspects of it and more than willing to take on the not so pleasant parts as part of the adventure. Fair winds and safe seas on your wonderful journey...
I have to agree about this channel being one of the best sailing channels on utube. I have gone from watching an American family who thinks sailing round the world is about children enjoying all the water sports but seem to have no meaningful contact with the local inhabitants to couples like Matt and Amy who delve into the local life and are all the better for it.
That was excellent. Thank you. I don't think I have seen a breakdown like that. Very informative. I love the fact that you paddle your dingy. That is probably something I would do. Love a good workout. I hope you keep seeing all the wonders of the world and share with us.
This was a very informative and well-organized explanation of the costs associated with your adventure. Thank you for sharing. I've dreamed of sailing since I was a little girl, but so far it has not been possible. Perhaps one day I can make it happen.
Had a great idea, I love sailing, and I have always wanted to sail the world. But as with most people in my generation, I could never leave the internet luxuries that I afford today. However, now with Starlink becoming a possibility, the idea of being able to sail around the world in 5 years with full high-speed internet anywhere in the world or ocean at a low cost is game-changing. Internet would make spending a few weeks crossing the Atlantic so much more bearable. Imagine this: Crossing the Atlantic watching the sunrise with Netflix on a TV just off to the side of your view behind the wheel. I suppose I would just need some powerful solar panels or a generator battery supplement.
I've been preparing people's taxes for years and working with them and their money management skills (many of the skills are just budding - at any age). What you did here was really great and is a great example for anyone, in or out of boats. Keeping track of where you've been really helps to show you where to go. When you keep track, as you do, you tend to spend much more deliberately - and that's only a good thing. You end up spending your money in a way that works for you, and that's the whole point. Kudos for not talking about the finances in terms of "lack", of what you're prevented from doing (and it would have been very easy to do, and many people would have). I really love the reality-based, upbeat way you told this story. I'm sure I'll be sending people here for a long time into the future. Aloha!
I really appreciate the information you shared. I am almost to the point to go sailing full time as well, and I need to have a good idea of the costs ahead of time.

I really appreciate your honest and candid perspective of the costs of sailing. All the other videos can be a little out of touch with the general public. Most of us that want to do this aren’t rich. This definitely gives me a better idea for planning. Great video. Safe travels!!
That's very useful. I can't see how you could reduce it much more other than doing without insurance which is a gamble. I'm particularly impressed that you have only motored 400 hours in three years. My only advice is it might be prudent to start setting aside some money for major maintenance like replacing your batteries.
Would be interesting to see you guys filming some of the bad stuff maybe do a vid on "the bad stuff".. e.g. rolling around at anchor and in bad weather as thats the reality of cruising
I would be interested in seeing that as well. It goes along with all the good stuff that happens. We do appreciate this channel and think they do a great job with their videos. We have zero sailing experience but are very interested in the entire idea of it. Therefore, I really don't think I want to be sheltered from the rest of it. Just saying.
LOVE your channel. My fiance and I are binge watching most of your videos. Question - how much did the boat cost, and what did you invest in getting it ready for this journey? That would be SUPER helpful in planning our own. Keep up the great work, we will be following along, and supporting on Patreon.
Thanks for the video. As an experienced coastal cruiser I am very interested in the cost of sailing offshore. Your video is by far the best I have viewed on cruising costs. Your down to earth nature and clever editing make watching your videos a real treat. I never fast forward as I may do on other UA-cam subscriptions I have. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing your costs of sailing around the world, I am just to lazy to write any € down, perhaps I don't want my wife knows the real costs of our boat and enjoys our sailing holidays more.
This is rapidly becoming my favourite sailing channel. You guys are doing an amazing job of articulating the highs and lows of a yacht circumnavigation on a realistic budget. You certainly inspire me to get on with the preparation of my old 1979 Cape Dory 36 for a similar type of adventure starting in the next 5 years (long term goal). All best with your continuing adventures and fair winds.
Wow thats the best example of a sailing budget i have ever seen, I agree with your friends you are tight maybe scottish? 🤣But ya gotta do what ya gotta do👍
@Bee Polar73... Its a delicate thing to ask someone about their income. Also considering their source is possibly largely from us, the general public, i'd think that to reveal such a number would lead alot of people to think "oh they're making enough money, they don't need my contribution" not realizing that patrons, and donations are as fickle as the weather, and not an absolute guarantee month to month.
I am mostly impressed that you both agree on achieving that level of frugality! I doubt I would experience the same marital harmony on all those “sacrifices”. You are definitely made for each other!
That was very interesting and informative. I don't often comment but you did a great job on this. Now the question is, where does the $1500 per month come from?
They have maybe been saving the most of their money (income) from a former job and using it wisely, as we all should be doing. If you want your dreams come true ;)
Hi Tim, We don't have a water maker but have huge water tanks that can hold 500 litres, by using salt water for washing we can make our fresh water last for well over a month.
Patreon income? Just tap on the P sign at the end of each video, see how you can contibute and on the left side you can see the income per video. Perhaps time to become a patroon yourself? Currently 427 USD per creation.
Great Info. Thank you for the openness. The next much more personal question is: How did you guys (at your age) get the money needed to buy the boat AND to stay a way for 3 years?
Wow! Thanks fir the detailed information and advice from this video and others. Its lovely to to follow your journey around the globe. The insight you provide along with your personal approach, makes your videos great to watch. 👍

It will cost me slightly more because my wife would divorce me if I bought a boat.
Then you dont share same interests. Ashame to be married to a wife like that then. A wife should support a husband no matter what
If you spend it all on the boat, you won't have much left to give her. (just an idea)

I’ve actually saved this video as Its got to be the best one on the internet for breaking down the costs! So well presented well done again 👏👏
Thank you and good luck with your adventure.
Wow thats the best example of a sailing budget i have ever seen, I agree with your friends you are tight maybe scottish? 🤣But ya gotta do what ya gotta do👍
Thank you for sharing this with us. Looks like you are enjoying your time at sea.
But... where your money does it come from? What do you do for a living?
Trust fund
Kevi O it’s not that hard to have this sort of money by your 30s
@Bee Polar73... Its a delicate thing to ask someone about their income. Also considering their source is possibly largely from us, the general public, i'd think that to reveal such a number would lead alot of people to think "oh they're making enough money, they don't need my contribution" not realizing that patrons, and donations are as fickle as the weather, and not an absolute guarantee month to month.
@@TrustJesus100 You aren't entitled to that kind of private and personal information.
@@Nyx_2142 Agree 100%
I am mostly impressed that you both agree on achieving that level of frugality! I doubt I would experience the same marital harmony on all those “sacrifices”. You are definitely made for each other!
That was very interesting and informative. I don't often comment but you did a great job on this. Now the question is, where does the $1500 per month come from?
They have maybe been saving the most of their money (income) from a former job and using it wisely, as we all should be doing. If you want your dreams come true ;)
Knocked it out of the park!! Really well edited and presented, thank you so much, regards from Clevedon, UK
Hi Matt & Amy, How do you get fresh water? Do you have a water maker onboard?
Hi Tim, We don't have a water maker but have huge water tanks that can hold 500 litres, by using salt water for washing we can make our fresh water last for well over a month.
u 2 people r the definition of true hearted. true love.
So how does it compare to what you had originally budgeted before starting your journey?
Hi Leigh, It is in the ball park, we guessed £12K to £15K per year, but we spend less on marinas, more on insurance and food than we thought.
Thanks for putting this together! Very useful! Good luck and stay safe!
Very useful thanks. Be interesting to know how much money you earn while sailing thru patreon and YT etc. Also do you freeze much fish?
Patreon income? Just tap on the P sign at the end of each video, see how you can contibute and on the left side you can see the income per video. Perhaps time to become a patroon yourself? Currently 427 USD per creation.
I must say this is one of the best breakdowns I've seen. You guys are great--love your channel.
Great Info. Thank you for the openness. The next much more personal question is: How did you guys (at your age) get the money needed to buy the boat AND to stay a way for 3 years?
You are our inspiration. Keep going as we still need the motivation to go step by step closer to our dream such is sailing around the world.
How much was Florence to buy?..... if you don’t mind me asking!

maybe 4
Wow! Thanks fir the detailed information and advice from this video and others. Its lovely to to follow your journey around the globe.
The insight you provide along with your personal approach, makes your videos great to watch. 👍
800 litres in three years!! Bloody legends well done
Spending less and living more...... priceless adventure, close relation with nature, being productive, making good thinking and living the life you love.
But how much did you spend on tea?
1120 dollars, or 7%. They call it 'other'.
This is why you need to get silient Yatch. It runs on solar. If you have the money to buy it. Great information guys. Keep up with the good work.
Wow these guys are serious penny pinchers. Rowing instead of using the outboard?!
Yes, we sometimes drink a lot of the beer to save weight too.
It makes more sense than using the outboard and then paying to row a machine in the gym! ;-)
You've got a point!
This video is awesome! The information is well presented and is very well organized. This is just what we were looking for.
I would say both of you have it all together, That is an understatement. you work hard for what you desire, and deserve the lifestyle of your dreams!
