Whatever your politics we have to admit and appreciate that our country gives kids like him, and me, a way up in life if we really, really want it and work hard. For me it was a fantastic college prep public school in Cincinnati that introduced me to the more articulate stable side of life. I live abroad now and miss Ohio every day, my kitchen walls are plastered with family photos from Middletown and KY so my half Swedish half American kids know their hillbilly legacy, good and bad.

I'm with Lyndsey. I too was the one in my family that felt the responsibility of taking care of my siblings. I had 2 older sisters and a younger brother. They were learning disabled and I wasn't. Mom always told me I was the man of the family and I had to take care of them. I took this responsibility seriously but even now at 54 I grieve at my failure to protect them. We were removed from our parents care and placed in Foster Care where we continued to be abused. We were then moved to a Christian Group home, Gateway Woods in Leo Indiana. We thrived there but when they left I was lost. Had no one to care for and I didn't know who I was and what my place was. God has been good to me though and I praise him every day for making me the man I am today. God bless Trump, God bless Vance and God bless the U.S.A.
Forgive the child in you that thinks you’ve failed. Many children are given the job of being an adult way too soon. It sticks to you, be the leader, the boss, don’t dare make a mistake, make good choices. Parent tapes. That’s what it’s called in some psych classes. It’s the replay of things you heard or were subjected too by your parents. We all have them. When I get sick of hearing their words in their voice in my head, I tell them to stop. Then I proceed in my own direction. If I made a mistake, I live with it. If it turned out well, I live with that, too. Keep giving your inner self pats on the back. You deserve it!😊

Had a horrendous childhood in Syracuse NY then in my thirties I got into UB Pharmacy School in 1996. I LOVED Buffalo. Lived in Kenmore. It was wonderful. Canada was 20 minutes away and pre 9/11 going back and forth was no problem.
7/15/24, J. D. Vance now VP Nominee! I really knew nothing of the young man until searching articles & watching videos. JD is a perfect example that your past experiences doesn't have to limit your future, but faith, trust and obedience can take you so much further! Every child in America needs to understand this. We don't have to let our past define our future!

@@eclipse07ful Telling the truth is my point. Stating facts is my point. You are obviously too dense to comprehend that. Hillbilly Elegy is a false title for his book. @knowmusicman157 Hillbilly just means you're from the country, stop being so bloody pedantic. Should every artist who claims to play hillbilly music and isn't from appalachia come apologise to you oh exalted one?
I did. One of the few (only one I know) who got out. Doesn't seem unusual to me though, the entire experience. Not his region but that's not the only opiate inflicted region in the US where there's simply a born understanding of your place in society and you don't dwell on it much. Not dwelling is part of the problem.
I lived through an alcoholic era where my dad was always drinking and had other addictions as well, stems from his childhood as he was abused as a child from having to work as hard as a grown man in the fields and no way out, making moonshine to sell to have food to eat, very poverty stricken, non-ending , he died working hard and still in his alcoholism cycles. I miss my dad, he tried so hard but couldn’t seem to escape. We need to do better for our children and grandchildren.😢
Great story and sad for that boy who lived in that situation. I was a single mom with two young children. Left my beautiful home to escape a bad relationship. No money and got laid-off from my corporate job. I worked hard to give my children a better lives. Thanks god that I never smoked or drank. Congratulations JD 🇺🇸

His book was a best seller for a reason. It is very well written; captured the demise of once vibrant American cities at the same time exploring the heartbreak of truly "broken homes." May God bless and Mary keep him.
When we saw the film at the theatre...all the people in attendance clapped and cheered at the end...it was so full of hope that no matter what your childhood...if you can survive it...you can make it in the world!!
As a child of an alcoholic, what he went through was so admirable. You're right, you work through all the "stuff" from childhood and overcoming all that to become a success is even more of a celebration. I loved the book!
Vance was in great part able to overcome his past because he is highly intelligent and highly educated. There are many reasons people overcome their past but it helps to be so intelligent and good-looking and articulate. Some would give up because they are not of good IQ or looks or articulation and so many other things. Though most people have no idea how they looks and other things about themselves. He is special... when I seen his interviews I knew I liked him... everyone has wrongs but trump you overlook them cause he has so much capacity everywhere else that is just like wow.
Biden is poor parents kid... you see the difference between poor people and rich people... Trump can still go on another 20 years it's the way the rich are groomed and taken care of they think different while the poor struggle with their kids to make it.
Look at Hunter... I guarantee you he is carrying pain inside ❤ his mind is shattered ... but you see trumps kids and they're outstanding producers nothing shattered in them.

I didn’t know a thing about this man, but what a refreshing person to serve a role in politics, instead of a person from an elite, political family. He has real wisdom and an understanding of how to help people.
Yeah i feel a lot better about him as VP after watching this. As you said, not from an elite family by any means, and you can visibly see that he's got a certain amount of compassion and decency to him. Politics can change people, this video was before he got into politics, but still. He came from the humblest of beginnings, I have hope he will turn out ok. People should watch stuff like this before forming opinions, I was all negative on him before I saw this. Best to give people a chance, as much as possible.

This movie was about a man who didn’t grow up in a privileged life but his adversities made him the good man he is. He had a choice in life but continued on in a good way. Strong man with good leadership abilities.
So true! Wonderful people can come out of rotten situations and rotten people can come out of wonderful situations. The first group has humility, self respect , tenacity and determination. The second group has pride , selfishness and no respect for self or others.
What do you mean by this "He had a choice in life but continued on in a good way"? Are you suggesting that he should have become a criminal or drug addict or something instead of just being a normal person?
He is not a product of his circumstances
He is a product of his choices

What people don't realize is
We cannot control what is thrown at us or with what relentfulness it comes there's no mercy at times you rely on someone else's hand to ease the burdens and get help sometimes it never comes or arrives very late
However... what I wish I had learned sooner way sooner is this....
NEVER SURRENDER ❤
Meaning when you feel like you're broken 💔 instead of giving up and saying okay I can't do it
That's when you need to FIGHT HARDER because you're about to LEVEL UPwards and it SPIRALS it compounds ❤
And that spiral directly AFFECTS EVERYONE around you... massive shock waves
❤
Most people think I'm breaking down now.... give up .. catch a break to rest but that's when you GO ALL IN...
I think building systems of habit.... and REMOVING people and things from you can alleviate that
You can't give in ... ❤ every time I gave in to rest to catch a break it was worse...
You have to force yourself to keep going 💯

We pity him if we watch the movie or read the book. But politically we must move into a different area besides pity. He along with Trump makes the t dangerous. Becareful we are voting for our children and grandchildrens Future.
Childhood trauma isn’t something you “deal with”. It’s a lifelong pursuit of relief from the constant pain and fear and guilt and shame and feeling unsafe no matter the context.
That is 100% true.
And a life long „ skill“ to feel with people and kids from an unsure and unhealthy background - he will never forget where he comes from in a good way
yes. It is a constant journey that you revisit from time to time. I like to say I have to walk myself back through it...all the way to the same conclusion....I didn't cause it, I can't fix it, I won't be able to go back and change it, I can just move forward.....And that's ok! That's my life and I am happy for it!

Man he grew up 10 minutes from where my mom lived till she died suddenly at 54. Both my parents are from Middletown, my mom's side from Breathitt just like JD. Brought tears to my eyes. Hard to believe a kid with a background like mine, both of us sitting in police cars while our addict moms got hauled away, might be VP is just mind blowing. Whatever your politics we have to admit and appreciate that our country gives kids like him, and me, a way up in life if we really, really want it and work hard. For me it was a fantastic college prep public school in Cincinnati that introduced me to the more articulate stable side of life.

Vance was in great part able to overcome his past because he is highly intelligent and highly educated. There are many reasons people overcome their past but it helps to be so intelligent and good-looking and articulate. Some would give up because they are not of good IQ or looks or articulation and so many other things.
