Sound Like Tool (Adam Jones) | BY Busting The Bank

- Опубліковано 28 чер 2024
- In today's episode of Sound Like, Rabea & Matt try to recreate the drop-tuned riffs of Adam Jones from Tool! Combining a Gibson Les Paul Custom, three amps and a mixture of BOSS, MXR and DOD pedals. The result? A thick, textured, stadium-filling tone. This one will be tough to replicate!

Almost more interested in that bass tone to be honest.
Yep. The Specter basses have an awesome tone and then trow a B7K infront and you can forget about it.
Todesnuss I feel like Rabea coulda used some compression
I'm not sure what you two are trying to say. I am talking about the fact that I really like the bass sound and are surprised how close it got even though I ususaly don't like the sound of Spectors all that much.
Todesnuss I was talking about the Gibson, not the bass
To be honest it felt almost to compressed and I'm not sure the doubler helped either since it fucks up the frequencies in a mono setup.
Tool's one of those bands that I love partly for how significant the bass is in the sound of the band
Justin chancellor is the reason I love playing bass. Iv been chasing that tone of his for years now
What really surprised me about Tool.... For years, some of my most favorite riffs/sounds I had associated with it being Guitar. Later on I realized that it was Justin on bass all along. Never before had I experienced music where the bassist contributed so much texture and creativity to the sound.
He’s the reason I started learning
but can you do maynard's voice without busting the bank?
Haha
More like without busting your throat. ;-)
@@phantomechelon3628 hahaha love it
Belch coming hoooooooooooooooooooommee
Noone can
Parabol at 12:55 floored me.. You were so close everywhere else but THAT tone was perfect.
Sounds like Rabea and Matt

YES!
I'm second this!
Malcolm Boyd YES
Damn its expensive to be a professional musician (cries with ibanez gio)
Cries with a Peavey Predator
Cries with a fender squire
some squires are pretty good though, and ibanez gio's aren't horrible methinks...
Ant - O - Nee Ant - O - Nee Never estimate the power of a fender squire with an upgraded pickups, gios wood is okay I guess but the stock pickup s can't handle high signal and heavy stuffs. However both squire and gios are hand down best guitar for beginners and high value for money imo.
Solomon Angom *cries with Peavey Vyper* SOMEONE.. ANYONE.. SPARE ME A NON-DIGITAL AMP!!!
Parabol and Lateralus were the only ones that sounded close to me.
Yeah. He played the Jambi wrong.
tkesici13 to be fair, Jambi is hard to play
BakenBaconGaming meh but still wrong
BakenBaconGaming not really, Ive been playing for about 2 years now and I can play every Tool song
The parabol intro sounded amazing
You can't fake the sound of a Wal bass.
@Vesa Jyrkinen G&L L-2000 is a very good bass to try and get the Wal tone
Justin’s using warwick now . I’m a guitar guy and dunno much about bass, does anyone here can shed some light on the warwick ? Coz i like the Wal sound and i dunno much about the warwick .
@@Danny-wv8ec I don't think he's gonna replace the Wal entirely with the Warwick. I think that he's gonna do the same thing like how he did in Ænima where he used the Stingray on some songs.
Danny B The reason he is switching to Warwick is because he got a deal from Warwick and they are making him a signature bass where as wal wasn’t giving him anything. Also the Warwick will have big blade man 4 pickups that imitate the wall sound
you can get decently close with a spector or a bass with a lot of midrange and active pickups
Y'all missed a golden chance to bring the bass players in on this one. Jones is respected on guitar, but Chancellor is legend status on the bass.
I strongly disagree, Adam is just as great as Justin in my opinion. Both are absolute magicians.
Fuck the bass....
@@naveedalikhan108 imo, they are both amazing musicians, but in terms of general respect among their respective communities, Justin's techniques and tones are far more sought after and respected between bassists when compared to Adam in guitar communities, where he doesn't get enough respect in my opinion with people saying he has nothing unique about him. I love both of them, and they are both equally as talented. With that being said, I would say that Justin is more innovative on his respective instrument, but Adam is still a monster with a perfect refined tone, and techniques like ambient pick scrapes found in Third Eye, Talkbox used in Jambi, picking behind the bridge in Eulogy, and more.
@@j6shy You forgot Danny! :D
@@theconsummatenerd ofc, he is the best drummer on earth
You guys should add a voting poll to the video for how close you guys got.
It drives my ear insane when he plays the Lateralus chorus at half speed gah
ProgressiveMetalist ik!! Wth
I just wrote a long winded comment basically saying that. It sounded so unbelievably bad. Like these guys are supposed to be professional who work at a guitar shop, record these videos. Yet a riff that isn’t even complicated. It’s honestly incredibly easy. And they made it sound like a nickel back song.
It absolutely ruined it for me. It kind of ruined this video series for me. What a terrible way to squander $10,000 worth of quality gear.
@@stevederp9801 lol they are professional musicians. sounds like, not copy 100%. relax
@@stevederp9801 shut up its not that deep lmao
@@BenRandall Ben lmao what a name
It doesn't sound "dirty" enough. It almost sounds like Adam has managed to clean up a Metal Zone. I think people know what I mean. Maybe it's missing some mids?
Sure a little but its played in mono , Adam tri amps
Do a "how to sound like tool on a budget bass edition". All his gear is expensive af
SergeantZaf03 I neeeedddd this video in my life
Agreed I agree so hard!
SergeantZaf03 they did 😂
I've come a close enough to a Justin impression with a EBMM Stingray Classic and a Darkglass B7k with a high treble EQ setting. The part that I can't keep up with is the mountain of effect pedals he uses
SergeantZaf03 Ernie ball super slinky bass is like $5 lol
sound like black sabbath by busting the bank?
an sg and his amp. what else is there. also, didn't they already do this? or was it without busting?
Fektthis It was without busting. I am curious to sr what guitar would they choose that isn't a signature.
They ruined the Black Sabbath "sounds like" by having a second guitar instead of a bass, (like here)
well tony iommi was also well know for his use of treble boosters , and he also used delay
There's the signature Gibson, and the 100W Head edition of Iommi's amp.
TBH, there's probably not much more to be gained from this video, as fun as it would be.
What about the Flanger?
These "sounds like..." videos are very hard to gauge. The mics and EQing have an enormous influence on the tone. Could be spot on in the room, but very scooped once it gets to UA-cam ears. Regardless, fun as always!
UA-cam also compresses audio and cuts outside of 20hz and 16khz I believe
Lateralus clean was spot on wowww
PeriPheric I knew someone had to say this, I was just scrolling to see a comment like yours. Everyone else was just complaining 'cause they didn't play the other songs well, but when you listen the playing of Lateralus is like "holly shit...".
Red Orb it's a sounds like not a play like ya nob. STFU
Sound like Gojira?
MrLokny7685 That would be amazing!!
The Joshiverse yes please
MrLokny7685 yes
Charvel or Jackson straight into an EVH 5150 III. There you go.
MrLokny7685 yes
...steal a mans wallet, and hes poor for a week...
....teach a man to play musik and how to buy instruments, and he'll be poor for life🤔🍺
Same with cars
You really shouldn’t obsess with gear, focus on playing not gear. Buying good gear should be a one time kinda thing.

Damn thats some very tasty bass playing by Matt. Almost ignored Rabea's playing it was so good.
Great job as usual guys!
Do a sounds like karnivool
Opeth
YEEEAAH

Y E S IVE BEEN ASKING FOR A LONG TIME
Make it happen! Such iconic sounds
hell yeah!! Adam Jones is my favorite guitar player! Really enjoyed watching this vid.
Fantastic vid. Great filming, sound and playing. Great job guys
Guitar tone: meh.
Bass tone: holy shit, that's spot on!
JackFou same here, but I thing that the guitar without the diezel just naild it. The "clean" parts Where almost exactly the same as Adam Jones tone
Could very well be.
It could also be a number of things like the EQ, the attenuator, the recording/post processing.
I think they did a really good job because as you said the cleaner parts were exactly spot on.
My reaction was also in parts because super saturated high-gain sound isn't really all that interesting for my ears.
My first impression of the guitar tone was "too much mids." Especially if you're referencing 10000 Days, you need a more "spunky" sounding tone with a rich high end presence. You can really hear it in Jambi and the last section of Rosetta Stoned
Hm, it's close but no cigar. I think the guitar tone is closer, not on every part though.
toold bass sound is soo easy to nail with an any bass as long as it's active and you are playing through a sansamp.
Matt, you were killing it on bass! Sounds awesome.
That was wonderful and great gearing! Two thumbs up!
You spent the right amount of time getting his tone, but you spent no time learning his riffs. But, the tone is what was important.
the sound is more important. learning the song correctly is upto you. at least you get an idea..
Tool? Instant like!
Michael Stelz Such a fukin brilliant band. Even the name gives me chills.
Lol same
sound like QOTSA BY busting the bank!
Oh yeah baby
Curvy Carcass i was about to say this lol, YES PLEASE
Curvy Carcass yeah that video kinda needs a revamp. The unlimited budget is actually important for homme' weird gear.
They have already done a sound like josh homme video.
Shawn not BY just the bank
Wow... just wow...this was great.
You guys nailed it! I need this whole riggg
Sound like RADIOHEAD!!! Please!!!
Tony Ball without a budget would be amazing but almost hurt to see the price
Step 1 : Buy a lemon.....
Totally nailed the bass tone too!
I have been critical of some of your "sound like" videos before, but both of your "sound like toool" videos, both with and without busting the bank are pretty good. nice work guys!
Nice job on this one. It's been so long since I have seen this
you nailed it guys
Yes rabea and Matt thank you this is so good I'm in hospital so I'm watching it and have been watching all of them again
Flynn Hanbury Tenison I hope you get better.
Flynn Hanbury Tenison get well soon
Thank you dude! Hope all is ok - get well soon :)
Thanks
Thanks
Great video! Adam Jones is probably my favorite guitarist not only for his playing but his song writing. And, of course, Rabea Massaad is my new favorite guitar player. Great demonstration, and the bass sounds awesome, too. :)
Sounds like you guys had some mic trouble on this one and recorded the music on the room mics. Would love to see a revisit on this one!
well done! you nailed the high gain sound. you guys look like you're having a lot of fun doing this series.
you guys did great with this one.
all riffs sounded like Adam.
but.....
the parabol riff stole the show. exactly like recording.
good show on bass Matt!!
Nailed it! Good job boys!
Nailed it, congratulations.
To anyone that likes Tool I want to let you in on a little secret.
The band itself has multiple albums and not just Lateralus. I even hear they might have released an album called Undertow but I think it was a secret release judging how not many know of it.
I know Untertow and Opiate, but I just don't like them as much as Ænima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum.
@@imaginerus people will disagree but i personally think 10,000 days is one of their best
No the rare one is salival. Its a live album put out after aenema (i think). They did some really weird stuff on that and covered no quater.
SOUNDS LIKE DEATH PLEASE (Chuck Schuldiner)
Trap a wasp in jar, done
As a big fan of Death, that made me laugh :-) Chuck was a phenomenal musician, but his recorded guitar tone wasn't his great gift to history.
Matt Vogt You're kinda right. I mainly just wanted to see Bea plays some death classics
They need to do some death or black metal sounds like. Transylvanian Hunger era Darkthrone or Altars of Madness era Morbid Angel. Or Obituary.
I'd dig that lead tone tho'.
That was really spot on.
you guys nailed it, spot on!
TYPE O NEGATIVE BASS AND GUITAR PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
I second this.
Fourth'd.
X5. This needs to happen.
fuck yes!
YES!! Ive been requesting for months!! please please do it!!!
Sound like Rory Gallagher next! (:
exspes yep, that's basically it. The MXR compressor helps too
Don't forget he usually set up his sound with his tone and volume pots on his guitar set back to close to half way.
Awesome! Killed it guys!
Nailed it! hell yeah guys.
What about sound like King Gizzard and The lizard Wizard?
Edward Velazco FUCK YES
YEAH BOI
Step 1. Buy a guitar with a microtonal fretboard.
You'll want something with P90s running into a Hot Rod Deluxe. I think he uses a Devi Ever Torn's Peaker for dirt and a Crybaby followed by a DD-3.
Yesssss
1:35
Seymour Duncan SH6 at the bridge
@Olek Golis wrong
You guys are awesome!
Good job guys, so glad you went back and did a "by busting" version of this. Sounds much better. Lateralus sounded dead on.
We're sounding like TOOL without a budget....
except we didn't learn the songs we're demonstrating!
FalconerPhoto that’s not actually true in this sense I can definitely play these Tool riffs better than they can.
@FalconerPhoto And even if that were true.
That's completely irrelevant.
Playing a riff wrong is objective and not related at all to anyone else being able to play this or not.
Your reaction is absolutely useless.
i was gonna say the same thing, almost every riff they played. they played wrong
Lol right! I really applaud them for at least being able to get the sound close to the original by ear but they’re way off on the notes to play! When he played Vicarious my ooze oozed, and flesh crawled 😂. Ok, I’m exaggerating but he was way off on guitar! I literally play Vicarious almost every single day as one of my warm up songs to loosen up my hands, and fingers. I can with 100% confidence say that it was way off. Like Shaq trying to shoot a free throw off!
The best way to know if your sound is close to someone else’s best way is to play there riffs.
sound like Buckethead!!!
Manuel les paul custom, Mesa dual rec/mini rec, digitech whammy, crybaby
Anakin Hunter And superhuman skills
yeaaaah
I could've watched an hour more of this gents! Spectacular! Looks like Im about to be spending some money on some new pedals!
Dudes seriously outdid themselves with that bass tone! Wow, that needs it's own video guys! Gonna go check now if you have one, don't let me down
sounds great lads.
How about a megadeth, marty / Dave sounds like
Next should be how to sound like justin chancellor
Nice job on the sounds like, gents! You had me fooled on a couple of them for sure.
You guys nailed it
To be honest, I didnt really feel it. Guitars seemed off. I can't quite put my finger on it though. Bass was not tight enough either. Granted, it's hard to emulate whatever black magic is going on in a WAL bass. But I think you should have gone for a two humbucker Spector instead of the PJ one. The P-Pickup is too soft for the target sound. Then use a GK or Mesa Amp for bass. I know it's a guitar video but I think a huge part of getting the guitar right is getting the bass right as well.
you do not need a reverb. you do need a flanger
Jesus WHAT AN AWSOME VIDEO!!!!!
Sounds great. Timing is fing hard. Well played boys
Friend of mine has met Adam a few times and says Adam doesn't use any distortion pedals. He just uses multiple amps for the heavy sound.
Lars Fidjarsen they said in the video they don't stock Diezel the pedals the next best thing
He uses an MXR Micro Amp for a solo boost, I think.
I've met him as well, I can confirm what your friends said. Amp distortion only.
He let me play the guitar every tool song was written on.
@@DustinRudzinski wow I would pay good money to have that experience. That would bE... may I say...a HOLY GIFT😏
The tone was good but you played most riffs wrong
XqMASTERpX they try to learn them by ear that day. They are slower with tabs and to at least get some gist of the riff they try to mimic with their ears.
Its called SOUNDS LIKE
XqMASTERpX UA-cam guitarists do that sometimes for copyright reasons
N. Guff there's no copyright infringement unless they claim to have written the music or have the actual song in. They talked about why they don't play the riffs correctly on one of the sound like.
Oh, Will Brewer is my name. Oh ok thanks dude
Awesome guys 🤘
Love the vids! Thanks so much!
Sound like muse by busting the bank
Joaquín Pinochet hope they do it Muse is my favorite band:)
Joaquín Pinochet without busting the bank would be a real challenge!
I'm a self professed Tool-head, and from everything I've seen his silverburst has a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge. That said, love this and all your videos.
Nope he doesn't use JB in the bridge..
www.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/Adam-Jones-0420-2011.aspx
I've seen it in multiple places. Even the linked article from Gibson says he does. Granted, it's hard to decipher if it's a modified JB or not. That said, everything I've found says it's a JB. I've also read people getting very close Bareknuckle Painkillers and Holy Divers.
This topic is a rabbit’s burrow. However, have recently come across info it’s not JB, instead a ‘personalised’ version of the SH-5, which is quite a different style of PUP. Will search for that UA-cam video and paste below.
Wrong. It’s a Seymour Duncan DDJ..
Love these videos! Had no idea the VH4 pedal existed, but now I need one to add to my sound. Thanks!
i've owned one. it sucked dick. sounded shrill and just not good. i can make my amp's distortion sound way better quality and it's just a blackstar venue 60 mkii.
I'm flat out addicted to this show. On a bender watching them all. I've learned a great deal. I gotta get off the sofa and, hey look Sound Like Zakk Wylde. Thanks fellas!
With no budget ? I was expecting the double amp setup! With that being said, you can get a much closer result then you got with a kemper =)
I play in a Tool tribute band it doesn't sound great at all for that money. Guy on youtube does a great mimic with a 5150 and cheap les paul.
Andy M to be honest i thought it sounded crap. the without busting sounded better
"I know the pieces fit..." sounded awesome - glad you played it.
I'm not a musician but I am a big TOOL fan, and I really enjoyed this video. Nice!
Sound like death!
Matt B Yes! Yes! Yes!
Queens of the stone age, this time by busting the bank :)
Good job guys!
Nice work lads! I loaded my LP with a Duncan sh4 in the bridge and run it into a Marshall guvnor, Orange rockerverb mkii. Nailed it!!
Can you guys do a soundlike sonic youth? I've been trying to replicate a few of the key crunch sounds with no luck!
why didn't you use the bf2 instead of the boss chorus? that's the pedal Adam uses for modulation. It's by far his most signature sound.
spaceman spiff exactly! If you only got one mod pedal, then the bf2 is it! But oh well, I love this series
I love Bea and Matt but im disappointed that they had such little knowledge of Adams rig. He uses a BF2 flanger for modulation not chorus. He uses a mxr micro amp for boost. He uses a simple dunlop wah and dd3 delay. Also (and this may be the most important pedal) he uses a ernie ball passive volume pedal. And finally for 10000 days hes using the helio talk box. Dont forget the glass slide! Thats exact and extremely simple.
@@mobeus84 his dunlop wah is a multiwah
Best tone on the series (Sounding like..) thus far!! Congrats. Really dig this. It shows that a Marshall can be whatever you want it to be with the right distortion pedal in front of it.
Great video!
Please do a Sound Like Opeth :D
Sounds like Yngwie Malmsteen!!! We want to see Rabeas neo-classic shreds xD
His signature strat into his signature Marshall. Pretty boring vid aside from the playing I guess lol
oh c'mon, are we watching these videos for seeing how much gear you can buy for 1500 or what tones (sounds like) you can get from a few pieces of gear together at an affordable price? Of course yngwie's playing is all about his hands, but so is BB.king and they pulled that off beautifully!
BigFatCock to get one of his sig anything would top the budget by at least one hundred pounds. It's a nice challenge (frustrating). I think it'd be very much enjoyable.
I assumed he meant *by* breaking the budget
A Perfect Circle next?? :) love these vids!! Bravo!
hey guys!!! I just saw Tool live in Hamilton Ontario on the 31st. Good timing on the video! Thanks for saving me 5 hours trying to dial in the reverb and delay time :)
Parabol was spot on. Lateralus was very good. I think the bass was just a touch too crunchy though
Sound like King gizzard!!!!!
NOOOOO🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love that LP Custom!
I just saw them last night (; they're one of my favorites
Sound like The Smashing Pumpkins
Tony M I honestly can't believe they haven't done it yet, it's been requested so much
Will York Music Probably don't like their music
Tony M YEESSS!!
