@@kalejoe6599 Yeah he did. If you listen closely you can certainly tell it’s a single coil guitar but less twangy than a fender and more sitar-like/lipstick pickup which could only be a danelectro. It also states the same in the anthology he released last year.

Also, and I know you know this, but he never ever played Kashmir on a Les Paul, it was the Danelectro. And Communication Breakdown (in fact ALL of the first album) was the Telecaster, he never started using a Les Paul until Led Zep II.
Gibson Les Paul custom : gift from Joe Walsh ~ Gibson SG doubleneck : gift from Jeff Beck ~ Gibson Les Paul " black beauty"w/ bigsby trem. ~ possibly nik' d by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols ( self confessed kleptomaniac at the time)
These guys used the preamps off of Teac reel to reel recorders into a Marshall for a lead tone. There were hifi quality little tube amps in the recorders around 20 watts. Loud enough to drive speakers by itself
Just to throw it out there, as a owner of a Friedman and a DSL, which are for there individual price points both proper amplifiers, the Friedman gets all the attention when I'm playing. That being said, for the price I can't say enough good things about the DSL. It's easily the most road worthy amp Marshall has put out. Though it's not as punchy as a JCM, it's much closer than anything in that price point.
Reverend Andrew Mills Yea the Stadium Arcadium pedalboard is the one I mean. I had the WH-10v2, the cast iron one. It really ate tone when it was off, but when it was on you can get some cool lead tones much more treble and bite than most wah pedals... Sold it though because I didn't get much use out of it, and the tone-eating part... Not sure if the original plastic one is the same in that way...

If you don't have a budget... why wouldn't you just go and research the actual equipment he uses and buy those? Realistically, that would probably be the best way to Sound Like... Jimmy Page.
Waleed Ali But they actually do lol. Jimmy used Teles for recording and Les Paul live, Vox for recording (and live when he had the chance) and Marshalls live
what Anderton's did was use the most expensive guitars and amps we have in store.. Rather than use the actual gear Jimmy Page uses.. Including Telecasters and SG's and the like.
Because most people aren't Jimmy page and don't have his skills. Jimmy used effects, but his technique and feel is what made the sound unique.....most of us mere mortals need expensive effects pedals etc to achieve this.
metafis no sir, gear is very important. Otherwise Page would have stuck with one rig his entire career if it didn’t change anything. This video didn’t even hit ball park. There is a lot more to Page’s tone than heavy distortion
I have heard both, and this one sounds a tad closer, but I think you alot of folks below in comments got caught up that you didn't need the JP gibson in the first place. I disagree, I think you DID need it because if I am not mistaken, it has custom PAF pups in it, that is not standard in the modern Gibson Standard or custom Les Pauls now. I have played the 59 re-issue, and they do sound different. So, I think it was a good call, to use it, and for that reason alone, you were ahead of the game on tone and being close to his real sound. I appreciate the time you all put into it, thanks,
+Rabea Massaad I think what he meant was have one of you guys with the budget rig, and the other with the unlimited rig. Live, side by side comparison of both.
+Rabea Massaad I think he means compare the expensive rig and the cheaper rig side by side - you playing one and Matt playing the other maybe. That would be pretty kool, but whatever, I'm not God.
1:09 vs 6:40 1:30 vs 10:42 - yes, for me the difference is very audible, however not woth the difference! I kind of like the grit and noisyness of the cheapest set and even think it's more like the original sounds from the album recordings! The law of diminishing returns... Great video guys, thanks!
Kashmir was played originally and live on a Danelectro. Led Zepp 1 and Led Zepp2 were recorded and performed with a telecaster. Live amps HiWatt, Marshalls and sometimes Orange
Just... wow!!! Loved all of the gear in this episode (as always). That T-Rex tape echo though, that is something that people will be paying thousands for in years to come!
Does it sound better than the £1500 rig? YES. You can tell that even over youtube. I suppose the kicker comes in the fact that it doesn't sound nearly £7000 better, but if money is no object......
+That smelly guy on the train You really don't. They splurged. Jimmy Page doesn't play a Friedman. What's so special about the his Custom shop guitar? The Friedman is a great piece of gear. But the Jimmy Page Les Paul is purely a collector's item. I'm not saying it's bad but it's nowhere near worth the price. You're paying a lot because it's a limited edition Jimmy Page Les Paul.
+Gary Moseley In a mix this rig sounds better, for a practice friendly setup the 1500 dollar rig has the advantage of sounding good at a lower volume and is still gigable.
Doug Payne If they really wanted a Friedman, they could've gotten the Mini Dirty Shirley and went over the $1500 budget with just the head. Friedmans still sound good at lower volumes. Even the Supro Black Magic which is supposedly the amp the Jimmy Page recorded on is $1500. I personally think this is more of "get a Jimmy Page type tone with an unlimited budget." You don't need to spend that much to get close to a Jimmy Page tone since Jimmy Page plays cheaper gear than this.
JELIFISH19 Yeah true, I haven't heard a Friedman in person so my opinion is entirely based on what I heard in the video, and the fact most Marshall 100 watt plexi/jcm800 type amps need volume to sound their best. And also most of the records made in the 60's and 70's was made with whatever was available and practical to the musician (there's so much myth and lore behind the Jimmy Page rig that you could spend eons searching for his gear and sound).
@AndertonsMusic, For some of us prog rock guys, I'd love to see one done of Alex Lifeson, Trevor Rabin, Steve Howe, etc. and would be great to see Rabea tackling some of those rifs. Great series!
Love the videos guys, but the cynic in me always wonders whether Lee has decided he wants to shift a couple of £5000 LP's that have been hanging around, some Friedman amps that have already been reduced and a few brand new and very expensive tape echo pedals so perhaps suggested the 'new' format? Fair play if he did, he's running a business after all.
+SW1976 I usually take this whole channel as very very clever adv campaign that both parties (the store and potential buyers) enjoy and benefit from. And in my book there is totally nothing wrong with it. Kudos to Lee and the crew for their passion.
Simon O Totally agree, but unlike the 'Epic deals with Bea and Pete' videos it's never mentioned that they are looking to shift stock and therefore base the videos around that requirement rather than just doing it for fun and the enjoyment of the viewers. But as you say, Kudos.

I want to hear The Beatles, specifically the Revolver era which has the best tone and was recorded exactly 50 years ago! (Released in august 1966) Yeah a 50th anniversary episode! I want to see George's SG and Lennon's Casino via Voxes and Fender Blackfaces.
(Bust the bank and you can test the famous Fair child 660 thing that costs a lot.)
Listen though things like She Said She Said or Doctor Robert and thrive on the mix between the driven SG and the cleaner Casino. Mind Blowing People!
I'm posting this again, and again, and again, but I want to see these vids sooo badly!!
Sounds Like:
1. Metallica (with Chappers, if required)
2. Avenged Sevenfold
3. Eddie Van Halen
4. Green Day
5. Jimi Hendrix
6. Buckethead
7. Brian May
8. Steve Vai
9. Yngwie Malmsteen
10. David Gilmour (redo with driven sounds)
11. Zakk Wylde
12. Paul Gilbert
13. Randy Rhoads
...Without Busting The Bank
And please do some vids on how to get the signature tones from different modelling processors and amps of different budgets (and by that I mean really cheap stuff like 20 watt modelling amps to really expensive stuff like huge pedalboards).
+Ameen Singh I'm all for _Buckethead, Zakk Wylde, and Paul Gilbert._
they've done Hendrix and EVH already and probably a few more of the ones you mentioned.
I'm all for Malmsteen and EVH as well.
chadwr85 When did they do EVH?
Ameen Singh Some time ago. I think it was chap and capt.
This looked like it made Rabea happy, (would've made me happy) love the 'Whole lotta' Love' solo, very nice work.
That setup sounds incredible. You can hear the littles nuances you don't with some less expensive gear.
01:30 Epiphone/Marshall DSL - 10:42 Gibson/Friedman
+Dan Rodriguez There is a pretty noticeable difference. But it's not even that one is even worse than the other, they're just different.
DomSchu I completely agree with you.
I really feel like the friedman wasn't the best choice. If they had any, a supro would have been awesome. The friedman got the dry, but it just didn't get the clarity much at all.
LOL. I was thinking to myself, I've never heard of the band, Special Episode.
Great Job Guys!!! Now do Stevie Ray Vaughn BY Busting the bank PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you all are awesome this is Ernie in Nashville and i own a 59 les paul cherry sunburst and a 59 les paul jr that i bought for a 100 bucks in 73 and the 59 les paul was purchased for 500 dollars in 72 and the 59 les paul goes for over 200,000 dollars and the Jr goes for around 10 grand so i got a pretty good deal and the 59 les paul is kept in a safe set at 72 degrees with humidifiers with my other 3 friends jems and im glad i kept them as a kid and did not paint them and i play my 61 fender esquier and a 59 reissue. great playing as usual....
Loved this video. Sounded spot on. Great job on delivering all of the tone goodness.
After listening to them side by side (both videos), your newest "Sounds like, without a bank" has so much more depth and sounds very rich and full. Good job guys
lovin it guys! i play bass, so would it be possible to do a sounds like but for a bass player?
+Joshua Wood a) As a bass player, I'd very much like that b) They have done that with sound like Royal Blood, just in case you missed it
+DeathLight oh yeah i saw that. but id like to see more " sounds like " for bass players. but i know they are really busy getting other content to us. But id just Love it they did more
This is actually a great ideia
+Joshua Wood Nobody wants to sound like a bass player...
+PeterWasted how not? bass is an essential part of almost all music, espesially the kind of music that Andertons play in these videos. So it would be cool to see how they would do this. on a budget and try and replicate some famous bass players
Do a sound like the who or the beatles or the stones
+Jacob Zwigy yes please
Spends thousands to buy a Klon Centaur
I also asked for that but specifically the Revolver era which has the best tone and was recorded exactly 50 years ago! (Released in august 1966) Yeah a 50th anniversary episode! I want to see George's SG and Lennon's Casino via Voxes and Fender Blackfaces.
(Bust the bank and you can test the famous Fair child 660 thing that costs a lot.)
yes i agree that is the best era i recently got a casino to get that era sound also the amps where fender silverfaces not blacks
Might as well dream big, craving more! Fun video! Great job!
Sounds mint...great job. Whole lot a love solo is bang on (sound and playing). Love how that Les Paul sounds firm yet articulate even with higher gain. Looking forward to hearing more "special" episodes.
Do both in one video. Get one rig with a budget and the other without and compare them
This has replaced top gear for me!
Also, and I know you know this, but he never ever played Kashmir on a Les Paul, it was the Danelectro. And Communication Breakdown (in fact ALL of the first album) was the Telecaster, he never started using a Les Paul until Led Zep II.
Page actually recorded Kashmir on the les paul but used his Danelectro live because it is tuned down to DADGAD (tuning used on kasmir).
Gibson Les Paul custom : gift from Joe Walsh ~ Gibson SG doubleneck : gift from Jeff Beck ~ Gibson Les Paul " black beauty"w/ bigsby trem. ~ possibly nik' d by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols ( self confessed kleptomaniac at the time)
sick video boys, lots of fun and great tones for sure
These guys used the preamps off of Teac reel to reel recorders into a Marshall for a lead tone. There were hifi quality little tube amps in the recorders around 20 watts. Loud enough to drive speakers by itself
for kicks, would have liked to have heard a £500 Epi Les Paul through the amps/pedals.. Now it's a £3.5k rig. .
+bottleneck1100 go se the original video
+carlos mendes you definitely didn't understand what he was asking
+H Bomb Hahaha
Just to throw it out there, as a owner of a Friedman and a DSL, which are for there individual price points both proper amplifiers, the Friedman gets all the attention when I'm playing. That being said, for the price I can't say enough good things about the DSL. It's easily the most road worthy amp Marshall has put out. Though it's not as punchy as a JCM, it's much closer than anything in that price point.
I have a dirty shirley 40 and dsl40cr. And the dirty shirley just sounds and feels better. The dsl is great but the shirley is phenomenal
I couldn't stop worrying you might drop the less Paul.
OMG! OMG! Those echo sounds out of the T-Rex are damn gorgeous!
Just found this series. Great job guys!
now we want AC/DC again... with a 61 sg... a jtm 45 and a schaffer replica!!!
John Frusciante by busting the bank. You need to buy about thirty pedals, a 62 strat and play mostly clean and distortion on a cheapo boss ds-2
Ive already busted the bank by doing that haha, only thing I don't have is the vintage strats :)
Reverend Andrew Mills
Yea the Stadium Arcadium pedalboard is the one I mean. I had the WH-10v2, the cast iron one. It really ate tone when it was off, but when it was on you can get some cool lead tones much more treble and bite than most wah pedals... Sold it though because I didn't get much use out of it, and the tone-eating part... Not sure if the original plastic one is the same in that way...
well let me list up what i got :)
Fender Stratocaster 1950's Road Worn 2-Tone Sunburst
Fender Stratocaster 1960's Classic Series 3-Tone Sunburst
both with SSL-1
Martin 00-15M
EHX - Holy Grail
EHX - Big Muff
EHX - Electric Mistress Deluxe
Boss - FZ-5
Boss - DS-2 MIJ and MIT
Boss - CE-1
DOD - FX65
Ibanez - WH10v2
MXR - Micro Amp
Line6 - FM4
Line6 - DL4
Moog - MF105
Marshall JTM45 with JJ KT66
Marshall 1960B cab with greenbacks
Jonas Jørgensen
Daaamn you are a really dedicated Frusciante fan! How is the 00-15m, I want to buy a good solid wood acoustic at some point in the future, but as I'm also a Neil Young fan I think about buying a D18 or D28. Not enough money for any of those right now though, and they need to be left handed, so problematic situation....
haha sure am :) its really the greatest feeling acoustic ive ever played, sounds fantastic when you want to play frusciante stuff but its not that open sounded if you can follow where im goin, so if ya wanna play other stuff too, get the 00-15M and another great guitar
Because you need his fingers.
There is a lot more to Page’s tone than heavy distortion
wow, that rig sounds friggin' fantastic...great job guys! :)
I appreciate the time you all put into it, thanks,
40 sec into the video and I already know, THIS NEEDS TO BE A NEW FORMAT.
why not compare the $1500 rig to the unlimited dollar rig?
That's what this video is :-)
+Rabea Massaad haha well yeah! but like in the room differences! xD
+Rabea Massaad I think what he meant was have one of you guys with the budget rig, and the other with the unlimited rig. Live, side by side comparison of both.
+Diego Tobar Or not even side by side, but just with 'flashbacks' from the other episode edited in (other than just the sample in the beginning)
+Rabea Massaad
I think he means compare the expensive rig and the cheaper rig side by side - you playing one and Matt playing the other maybe. That would be pretty kool, but whatever, I'm not God.
Live Jimmy had more gain and or more volume. He also used the middle position on the toggle switch a lot. Good job though.
1:09 vs 6:40
1:30 vs 10:42 - yes, for me the difference is very audible, however not woth the difference!
You should do a remake of the Metallica one Rob and lee did
Still waiting for Eddie Van Halen
Johnny Marr. Please
Wow! That sounded great, guys!
Just...
It's not 7000£ better, but you will have to pay that price to get there so the price-to-value difference is not even relevant!
Sound like - Alex Lifeson from Rush
Why no telecasters?
@AndertonsMusic, For some of us prog rock guys, I'd love to see one done of Alex Lifeson, Trevor Rabin, Steve Howe, etc. and would be great to see Rabea tackling some of those rifs. Great series!
Amazing lads! Keep it coming.
+SW1976 thanks for watching. I can assure you that all the video ideas for this series are done by request! There are no ulterior motives ;)
+SW1976 you can go to the original "sound lke jimy page without busting the bank" video and find coments asking for a "busting the bank" version
Like I say guys, just the cynic in me. :) Keep up the good work, nothing better on youtube.
But as you say, Kudos.
please do one for Slash sound But... by busting the bank!!!!
Make Sound Like Kirk Hamett !!!
+RykahP96 this
I do not think that with that team is sufficient
And Hetfield while we're at it
Excellent job! You guys inspire me!
Bea has gone through such a good transformation, good job!! 😉
