After seeing this multiple times, I can almost confidently tell the video editor put a flanger effect on Rabea's voice in that part. It doesn't kill the mood for me though, just goes to show how much depth these guys and especially the editor himself tries to encorporate in the videos
The chorus that seems to be on everything from Fair Warning on was actually an Eventide Harmonizer. Eddie would set one side slightly detuned. He most likely got the idea from being a pianist. Most pianos have three strings per key. One popular method of tuning them is to tune the center string dead on the pitch, and the outside pair slightly sharp and flat. It creates a natural chorus, and using a harmonizer in the same manner adds a certain fatness to the tone.
@@tednugentlives you will also find documentation of the eventide technique he called " jape" as well as use of the boss ce-2. He didnt just go one way and as he got more money, his gear got upgraded/ changed... regularly

I just got to this so I realize I'm coming late to the conversation and you won't ever see this, but I feel the need to go on record with how shocked I was when you started playing Panama. The show was really interesting as always and I enjoyed the build up, but I wasn't really convinced you would get a Fender amp to come anywhere near EVH's tone. Not that I'm an expert. Just something I was thinking as you went through the process. When you started Playing Panama i absolutely started listening on a different level. The tone seems perfect. i was sent straight back to the 80s. Really all done. Much impressed and really thankful I watched this.
I'm watching this 3 years after Ed passed RIP. I was driving when I heard the news and had to pull over because I was crying such a flood that I couldn't see. We were good friends when I was a teen. He taught me a lot. But I never tried to sound like him by rig or playing, although I could handle the first VH album pretty well. Now I will find one of these pedals and have it along with a couple others so I can invoke his memory. Hopefully without crying 😭 in public.
God Bless you, Brother Man. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. I never had the honor of meeting Eddie, but his music and guitar magic have been a big part of my life- motivating, moving, and rockin' me up from my teenage years! All the best to you. RIP EVH

@@9unslin9er if he wants to play his catalog, he will need more than one though to be fair. He didnt always use a floyd rose but its definately an essential tool to " play like steve stevens". I would guess that he said this during his time with vince Neil band and probably meant in that particular situation. It would have never worked for Billy Idol or Atomic Playboys. He bought the gretsch because he needed that sound, same with the strats, hamers, les pauls etc. There really is no such thing as " the one guitar" for every sound, unless your sound and style are extremely limited, which is definately not the case with steve stevens
I've been playing with that Neural DSP Archetype Plini plugin and it gets you EJ tones real well. But on the guitar side just some strong mid-range single coils are most important.
Strat > TS Mini > Tape Machine/Ibanez Analog > Cleanish amp? I think nylon pick is a huge part of his tone as well. His touch is nothing like any other guitarist.
I think Tone City Golden Plexi would've been perfect for this "without busting the bank" episode. It doesn't offer much tweakability, but it probably does the "full blown-up" sound better than any pedal, with all the dirt too and for such a cheap price. Other Plexi pedals often are rather "clean", they are high quality, which in my opinion a blown up amp rarely is. But the cheap Golden Plexi has that vibe of uncontrollable feedback and whatnot. You might've still made the correct choice because I'm not sure you could make the effect chain work with that pedal at all. However, I think you did fantastic job with the sound. I think all the key things are there so that you can easily recognize what you were going for. I think this is one of the better "sound like without busting the bank" you've done. I'd love you to sound like Marty Friedman/Dave Mustaine on Megadeth's Rust in Peace. That's one sound that is somehow so specific I can never put my hands exactly on it. And haven't heard others be able to either. It's like this basic Marshall tone with reverb etc, BUT there's something more to it.
Just a marketing idea for The Captain. Why not have printouts of the rig rundowns from these videos in the store/online so if someone says I really want to sound like X but only have Y$...quick cheat sheet ready to go saying Bea & Matt recommend this to make it happen for Z$, or just make them Anderton Recommends "Bundles"

@@potentialbouldercrusher9159 yup exactly right. The first time I switched from 9s to 13s on mine I learned a few things. First holy crap that tone. So meaty and chunky. Just so much metal over the pickups. Second, put extra springs in the trem system. Without the extra reinforcement you can actually see the bridge lifting up. And last, watch your neck. The first strat I did this to was an old squire and I noticed very quickly I was having to adjust the truss rod to keep everything straight. So freaking worth it though
This is not as hard as people seem to make it. While Stevie used several amps over the years, a good shortcut is a tube screamer or clone pushing a fender vibroverb or similar into grit. Then a Marshall clean biting through it with it's clean using alnico 2x12s. Size .12-.13 strings help with raking. Dial the TS with level all the way up and drive almost all the way down. Some Mesas can get close to this tone without the extra marshall. DO NOT use TEXAS SPECIALS with large strings, it will just sound muddy. Low output pickups are what is called for. The Texas specials were designed to help people sound like SRV without the large strings, But SRV really did not like them that much as he never played live with them. You can also use the bassbreaker to sound like SRV, Push the amp a bit the same way with a TS like pedal with level up and drive down. You WILL get close enough without ten amps. Practice your raking. Practice and Enjoy!
I've come as close as I possibly can on my tight budget. The gear I have is a Silvertone stratocaster that I modified with parts from a JS100 from the early 2000's, including the ibanez AH2 bridge pickup and licensed floyd trem system, which cost me a total of $450 CAD (all currency is canadian) for both guitars used. As well, I have a 120 watt (VT80+) vox valvetronix that I set up on the 5150 preset with it dimed to 10 on all but the gain, which I pulled back to about 8 or 8.5. For a phaser I picked up an MXR phase 90 for $110 brand new, the flanger I use is a JOYO classic flange which cost me $46 new, I have a JOYO analog delay for that 1 repeat split second snap, which was $55 new, and I have a Behringer 7 band EQ that I picked up for $50 new. All said and done I spent $711 Canadian, which is peanuts in terms of £. 408£ all said and done. Not saying the guitar is great, it needs some work and a better trem system. But a floyd rose original is another $300 CAD, so you're still under 600£. I wish I had a proper recording setup to do more with music and such, but that's my next project after the house.
Question is, could they pull of the two amp rig? Perhaps a Gretsch Streamliner, Ibanez Analog Mini Delay and Roland JC-40 together with perhaps a Marshall DSL, Blackstar or Fender Bassbreaker. Or possibly even a Vox?
that would be a good one for sure!!! Pretty easy tone though-to duplicate gear wise that is. An epiphone les paul 2 channel amp and some boss pedals since Billy still uses boss now.
That is the best ‘sounds like, without’ yet! Absolutely awesome. I’m going to look at buying this exact set of pedals to go through my Marshall DSL40 CR with my SG and Les Paul. I’m not aiming for an EVH sound but this collection would just add pretty much anything and everything I want.
Back in the day Eddie and Brian May joined forces at some point, and got together on May's EP Starfleet. Legend has it that they swapped guitars just for giggles: Brian playing Eddie's guitar and vice versa. Imagine 2 absolutely instantly recognisable guitarists swapping gear?? Megadeth don't really have an iconic guitar tone
Megadeth stink
Sound like Steve Vai or Def Leppard! Panama tone was on point. Nice one
Other EVH Flanger songs are "Hear About it Later" and "Unchained"
"And The Cradle Will Rock" which was actually done by plugging the flanger into a keyboard
Vinyl Scratch always wondered how they got the keyboard to sound like flange guitar

Nirvana, buy a peavey rage, crank it, done
@@tomasagustinveravicentin7789 umm nah

@@skurk3448 I'd actually go with the Squier Bullet Mustang and a Boss Katana since it has the DS-1 built in it.
Great job!!! Now do Eric Johnson without busting the bank... And by busting the bank!
Yes! Do Eric Johnson! Cliffs tone
@@bweeks8869 it would be THE most epic video ever!!!
@@jonboydiego999 AGREED!!
I saw a video somewhere once where Eric himself showed exactly how he achieves that sound
@@ragnaroksangel yeah I've seen that too, it would still be good to see them recreate it both by unlimited money and on a budget. I really enjoy watching these guys mimic not only equipment but have a go at getting that signature tone and feel.
I would love to see Bea do one of his idols.Nuno ! I'm sure he would really enjoy it and do a really good job
This is remarkably close, I had no idea that these Plexi pedals genuinely do come very close to the sound! Good job!
RIP EVH
I've never clicked on anything so quickly in my life!!!
Best episode so far and I've seen them all. BEAUTIFUL playing and fantastic tone.
These blokes absolutely honor “The Legend”! Great job, guys!!
SInce we're doing 80s era, why not do a Sounds Like Steve Stevens (Billy Idol)?
he used hamer guitars, has used the EVH Wolfgang and i believe he uses Knaggs now, i think the Musicman Axis (the £400ish one) would work
his amplifiers are were Carvins and now are Friedmans which are super expensive so a marshall with a friedman Brown Eye overdrive
for pedals get a boost, EQ, compressor, fuzz, vibe, delay, whammy and a wah
Hamer guitars and carvin amps back then
Steve has said if he could only have one guitar, it would be a "really good Les Paul", hence his signature Knaggs model.
Here's a challenge... sound like the Cars. ! That tone might be tuff to dial in...
@Brett S. he also has a Signature Gretsch but i do agree the tele or les paul is the way to go
Incredible... What a player.
Eddie Van Halen ain't bad either😁
It was awesome to watch Rabea playing some Van Halen!
Sound like buckethead by/without breaking the bank
Eddie's "Secret Sauce" chorus during the 80's was a Roland DC-30 Analog Chorus-Echo. MXR's 5150 Chorus is a workalike "clone" of that circuit.
Sound like Eric Johnson without busting the bank, would really be helpful
Not possible, gotta bust the bank
I've been playing with that Neural DSP Archetype Plini plugin and it gets you EJ tones real well. But on the guitar side just some strong mid-range single coils are most important.
You need to be able to play like Eric Johnson for that, so good luck.
@TheBradge yup let's buy Eric johnson for 1500 pounds 🤣
Strat > TS Mini > Tape Machine/Ibanez Analog > Cleanish amp?
I think nylon pick is a huge part of his tone as well. His touch is nothing like any other guitarist.
Aint Talkin Bout Love was 90% there but everything else was spot on! Nice job gents. Now BOSTON pleeeeeze!
This is the best series on Andertons, LOVE IT ❤️
I think Tone City Golden Plexi would've been perfect for this "without busting the bank" episode.
SUUUUUUCH A GREAT IDEA!!
Glad I'm not the only one who has thought this. Missed $$$ opportunity.
Well, I've been listening to EVH for 40 years and you guys did really well reproducing the sound. Well done!!
Sounded about as EVH as possible without borrowing his fingers!
hmmmm, I feel it was a bit too brittle. An EQ pedal to get some more low probably would have helped a bit.
ErichWilliam I would’ve just brought down the presence/extreme highs a tad, otherwise sounds almost exact
@@djw6670 Bassbreaker doesnt have a presence control, which is why I thought an EQ could do the job of cutting em back a tad.
ErichWilliam ErichWilliam Never played a Bassbreaker, always thought they were bigger amps with more controls etc. MXR EQ would do the job nicely
I've played a couple and have hated every single one. Even the new fender guitar demos, especially the Alternate Reality ones, the tone is just the worst. Not sure why they are so popular with Andertons these days. It makes me miss the Marshall 30 days everyone complained about.
Great job! This episode was fun to watch and I think that is probably the best rig you guys have ever put together.
100% IMPRESSED! Great job Bea!
What a splendid job you did , you managed to get that cutting tone .
I think the hint of chorus and delay is what really makes the EVH tone come together. It makes it go from a nice tone to a massive tone.
Please sound like Stevie Ray Vaughan by busting the bank!!!
Fender tube amp, strat, tube sceamer, crank amp to 11, 😁😁
@@justinh8049 and stevies fingers hahahah
It would be awesome if they had a double amp setup.

Amazing how close that distortion got you to EVH's sound in an instant. Great video! Would love to see one on Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane.
😂😁
@@gktde9874 Yeah fat chance trying to nail those incredible tones, but would love to see it regardless haha!
I think some a Shawn lane vid would need an incredibly well practiced shredder plus some editing bc Shawn did a lot of stuff with layers. (Eg kaiser nancarrow)
Unless they felt like doing the buckethead thing.
@@JoshNotJohn0 His tone was always best live, with his 4 cabs each delayed by a few ms for a huge "quad tracked" style sound.
Wow, you nailed it fellas! I keep rewatching this video for the toanzz. It’s saturated, yet clear... warm, yet crisp... spot on EVH

Great tone, well done. Pls do Ty Tabor from Kings x.
I second this!

Eddie still has the best guitar tone ever recorded. They still give me chills. You guys came really close, very impressive.
I very much wanted Hot for Teacher to keep going! maybe a thought, when you play the really impactful intros, take it another bar further with the programmed drums added when it kicks. that'd be cool
And go what, copyright strike sollicitating?

Sounds like SRV by busting the bank!
Fandeschats 974 people have been calling this for years!
His tone was mostly in the hands, though. Get gauge 13 strings on a strat and pick as if you were trying to break the strings.
The SRV tone is nothing complex. He playing ability can never be copied, however .
That fella was intentionally trolling by playing _Stairway_ because he knew the camera was there 😂
1:47
the forbidden song
No stairway...denied
That was really good. Missed a bit of that marshall like bottom sound, but the rest was GREAT. Well done!
I noticed the exact same thing right off the bat.

What about singing stairway in a guitar shop? Just start belting it.
Probably waste of time keep asking but here goes Billy Duffy ( the Cult)
Brien Collins +1
Question is, could they pull of the two amp rig? Perhaps a Gretsch Streamliner, Ibanez Analog Mini Delay and Roland JC-40 together with perhaps a Marshall DSL, Blackstar or Fender Bassbreaker. Or possibly even a Vox?
Agreed
that would be a good one for sure!!! Pretty easy tone though-to duplicate gear wise that is. An epiphone les paul 2 channel amp and some boss pedals since Billy still uses boss now.
What Era? Billy had his roland/Vox + gretsch Era, and then he had his les Paul Marshall Era.
You guys should do one where you try to sound like a different instrument eg. Sounds like John Coltrane - Saxophone
