    Had a boss get mad because people worked the office hours and left on time. He hung a sign under the clock in the lobby "this sign will never be stolen because people are always watching it". He forgot that I brought the clock into the office when it first opened. I took it home with me that day.

      Back in the 1980's in the town where I live (U.S.) someone in a local factory or plant noticed a camera in a men's restroom and the owners found themselves with a wildcat strike.

    Long ago, when I was the supervisor of a small shop, I had a bullwhip hanging on the wall, with a sign that said "The floggings will continue until morale improves. " Everyone knew it was a joke, with the possible exception of the owner of the company. 😂

    I worked in a call centre once, and they started monitoring me going to the toilet. I only had 15 minutes for a break on an 8 hour shift. And your supposed to get a drink, from a really busy canteen, drink it, filter the drink through your body and then release it into the toilet - All within 15 minutes on your break. Yeah, now I know why you gone bust. Place does not exist now.

    Number 2 would make great evidence in an unjustified dismissal lawsuit. Fired a week after not answering your phone? Even if the company said that had nothing to do with your termination, just the fact that that notice exists would be a serious problem for the company's credibility.

      Sadly, I have seen a similar sign posted to a host stand at a casual restaurant/bar in the US. Major turnoff. It’s icky to patronize an establishment that thinks so little of people, and you know they’re short staffed because applicants saw that sign. 😂

      There was a difference between the restaurants who cared and those who complain about being short-staffed.
      The ones that struggled often paid everyone minimum wage and raises only happened when the government raise minimum wage. These places were just as expensive if not more than many other places.
      The places that paid higher than minimum wage had plenty of employees, service was fantastic, and the food was great. If people won't work for you but are working for your competition than it isn't lazy people it's you as a boss.

    That doctor's note one can be used to good effect. If you take a sickday or three, *let* them ask you for a dr's note, then refer back to The Sign.
    Think I was 4-5yrs into my career, worked at a shiite place and got a nasty flu that knocked me off my arse. Was a Mon-Fri absence. Was "asked" for a dr's note to "prove" I was actually sick. I was literally under the covers sweating *and* shivering at the same time, and I was supposed to... what?... take a bus to the doctor? When they wouldn't let up, I just said, _"Kfine, being that this is medical-related, I'll just take _*_ANOTHER_*_ sickday to go to the doctor and get a note from him."_ Yeah, they backed off when they asked me if I was being serious and I said absolutely. I was thankfully out of there a few months later.

      I have always thought the notion of doctor's notes, for some illnesses, are pointless. Yes, too sick to go to work, also too sick to sit in a waiting room for several hours to get a note.

      I don’t know about other places but my GP has recently introduced a system where you order your Docs note online, you self diagnose, you say how long you need it for up to two weeks, and for something like the flu they don’t bother ringing you or asking you to go in. They just email it to you later that day. Much better system but not a very good service.

    Actually, in the US, those holidays are not required to be paid. My spouse interviewed for a position and the person interviewing him said they don’t pay for holidays. Googled it, it’s not required. He didn’t take the job because A. They lied about the pay rate in the job posting, and B. Funny thing, all the employees on the work floor didn’t seem happy. I think we can guess why.

    We sarcastically hung a "beatings will continue until morale improves" and our boss called a meeting explaining how great our job is. I'm glad I don't work there anymore.

      There was a sign like that posted in the break room of a place I used to work. It was the boss that put it up. Bit of a twisted sense of humour, but a great guy to work for.

    My boss at the charity shop where I volunteer recently pointed out a sign that another manager at another branch had put on the wall in the office.
    It states from what I can remember,
    Mobile Phones - please note that as so many volunteers are using their phones on the shop floor, if you don’t put it in your locker at the start of your shift, and are caught using it on the shop floor, you will be asked to leave and your services terminated !
    It’s difficult enough to try to get volunteers in the first place and this manager is always moaning that she doesn’t have enough help - but when she puts up signs like that, is it any wonder she doesn’t have any staff ?!
    My manager was horrified to see it !
    The funny thing is, when I popped into this shop last week when my boss was covering for the manager’s day off, I went through the books and media section (this is what I’m in charge of in my own branch) and was horrified to see that a lot of the DVD’s (2/3rds) were either scratched beyond acceptable or none existent and some of the books were so old, that they had new forms of penecillin growing on their covers !
    I told my boss that I was going to send her some of our decent stock but was told unless this manager actually asks for it, she won’t take it.
    Yet she’s happy to fill her shelves with crap stock and wonder why it doesn’t sell !
    I’m baffled !

    My best employer gave 18 vacation and 18 Miscellaneous days a year. Vacation days were capped at 18 but you could accure up to 32 Miscellaneous. When they had a massive layoff (with twelve months notice) I received a total of 50 days PLUS 12 months severence pay. Those were the days.

      Worked for me, just out of high school, "toured" the place I was interviewing at, saw the same two signs posted in multiple places on 5 levels/floors that were part of the tour. 1st sign was something about clocking in and out for coffee breaks, lunch breaks, and 2nd was a list of 8 or 10 items with the phrase "Remember you are replaceable..." between each item listed. About mid-point of the tour, I knew I wouldn't accept a job offer, if made. As they clocked out for AM coffee break, I thanked them for their time, said that I could tell that I won't be a work-culture fit. One interview got mad, the other thanked me, passive aggressively, for not wasting the rest of her day. My parents weren't happy either - lol They relaxed a bit after I told them about the signs. (I tend to get super focused on stuff and unintentionally miss break/lunch times/end of day, unless someone interrupts me, or I have a shared workspace)

    I have Crohn’s disease so if I had the last one imposed on me, I’d report him to HR for discrimination. My bosses etc are all aware that I may need the toilet immediately.

      You have a valid reason, unfortunately there are people that will take the piss. I have a "supervisor" that will disappear to the toilet for 30 minutes at a time. He won't tell anyone, he will just disappear. The best is when he goes to the toilet before his break, goes for his break followed by the toilet again. Managing to turn a 30 minute break into over an hour

    I can't remember the list one boss posted about his rules... but every IT person in the shop added to them. The additions were not complimentary.
    After a dozen or more additions, the list was removed by the manager. He pouted and sulked for weeks.

    Overall with these videos: a heartening look at the fact that employment should be a transaction in which both parties benefit: one person gives service, the other pays him for it, instead of the traditional idea that if you're looking for a job, you're automatically in an inferior position and will remain that way. It's equal.

    Long story many years ago worked in fish factory they put me on a job that was easy enough to do but after a short while.
    I was asked by a co worker to go faster( not a supervisor) a co worker. I asked was there more money for going faster the answer was they( the production line' There was more than one line) wanted to win the cup my reply was no cash same speed from me a very disgruntled co worker walked away. Tea break came and I asked to see this precious cup to my surprise and discussed it was made of cardboard wrapped with silver foil how's that for a brain washed work force. they took me off that line there after. You don't need a sign to insult your work force if they that dumb.

      My father was told to slow down by the shop steward in a car parts factory because he was showing up the other workers. This was Birmingham (UK) in the early 50s. That attitude went well for the industry...

      @@catlover132 Back in the early 70's I worked for a major charge card company. Simple enough job. Our department changed addresses for card holders statements. I was told by my supervisor that I was showing everyone up by doing more then they were, and making her look bad as a supervisor. I was not,, to my knowledge, doing anything any differently then anyone else.. I continued at the comfortable pace I had been working at. The supervisor told my teammates to shun me until I got the message. I was very young and scared to report her. Fortunately I was not at that job very long by my own choice

    When I was younger, my old boss (who died in ‘09, I did mourn him, because, despite this one negative, he gave me a shot and I’ve been employed at the same company for 18 years) he would constantly be on me about my bathroom time. Like hauled in the office, long chats about how often and how long I would take, leave notes at my station about when he discovered I was gone (7:36AM where is [name]?), etc. He was a former Marine and a former GM plant worker, so, you sort of understand where the mentality came from, but I never understood why I was so singled out, or, at least why it felt that way. Strange.

      One job I worked at briefly, a factory position, had three ten-minute breaks per shift which all employees took at the same time, whether they were using the restroom, having a smoke, snacking, checking their Facebook, or anything else.

      Only once I was asked why I went to the bathroom for the second time in the same day (I usually didn't take extra break for this, I just stopped there on my way to smoke) and I dead pan replied "this is the first time in this company I actually gave a shit."
      Two weeks later I got an email from HR that they need to talk with me about something (not specifying what) and if I can come on Tuesday, 1:30 PM. Just for some background, we were not the most common workplace, most of us worked Mon-Fri 2:30PM to 11:30PM, so asking for that was pretty insulting, but I was even weirder, my schedule was Thu-Sun night shift (like from 10:00PM till 8:00AM). So I replied that it would be fine, if they are willing to add this to my overtime, trip included, just about 5 hours of overtime. Surprisingly, HR doesn't like to pay overtime for not working, so they said that I should provide timing according to my presence and availability. Perfect. Just perfect. "Dear [name], I went through our ticket stamps from last 6 months and found the best time for our talk. Please, mark your calendar for next Sunday, 3:00 AM. That is the time my colleague returns from his lunch break, and we have the lowest number of calls, so there will be no service interruption."
      And I never heard from HR again.

    I had a boss give me grief about the time that I would sometimes spend in the bathroom. I looked her straight in the eye and asked her if she had any idea what it was like to have IBS-D. What it was like to live with diarrhea every day of her life, and how she would deal with the horrific stomach cramping. I then asked her if she had read up on the ADA laws (US: Americans with Disabilities Act) and if she knew that her comments were harassment against someone with a disability and that a few extra minutes in the bathroom was a reasonable accommodation. Then asked her if she understood what discrimination was? That was the last time she gave me a hard time for having to run to the bathroom in a rush let alone for the time I spent in there. That sign would be considered discrimination, and that boss is someone who would more than likely retaliate against someone who asked for an accommodation.

    Sadly in America the bathroom is a common thing to be told about by management. For the most part they only want you to use it during your scheduled 10 minute break Every 3 hours if you need more they want doctor documents then they still ignore it and tell you to use your break

    Snappy notices are always a temptation. In middle-management for the last decade before I retired, I had only 2 such notices on my office wall.
    One said "Last year i coudent even spel degree - now I hav got one!" My actual distance-learned degree in English Literature was framed next to it.
    The other was a quote from Will Rogers. "It ain't what you don't know that causes trouble! It's what you DO know that ain't so !!!"
    I suffered for years from a boss who was a total pr!ck. His own boss was even worse (something I've always thought worth remembering.) Both intellectual midgets - don't know how they ever kept their jobs.
    The sad thing - in retrospect - was that if they hadn't worked so hard to be rid of me (and failed every time) I'd have probably left a lot earlier than i did. Just never liked being pushed. And never hesitated to involve the law where necessary.
    I think they call it Dunning-Kruger these days.

    I got a call one morning from my Dad. He had spoken to my autistic child, but she forgot (again, autistic) to tell me! My mom had had a heart attack, she was 87 yo, and he needed me to come help in San Diego, CA. My supervisor sent me right home, thank you! So, I decided to take family leave for a month to help mom. When I was at my moms', my boss called me everyday asking when I would be back.....My mother couldn't even WALK, or FEED herself, etc.

    I worked as security guard for a condo complex. My Captain was death on long restroom breaks. He himself took breaks long enough that the management company charged back the time he was on break because, on day shift, they had to have an employee fill in at the gatehouse.

    Boss got up me in a meeting for never answering his calls (he calls at 09:00 while he is "on his way to work"). I told him that time of the morning I was having my morning toilet break - regular as clockwork, and that as soon as my ass hit the seat the phone would ring. I could always take it with me and answer it if you insist. He told me to hit the head before work starts (I actually start about an hour earlier than that, but according to him I only work office hours), or I need to be faster when I go - yes, he actually said that. I grossed out everyone in the meeting by telling them I'm lactose intolerant and I also can't digest sucrose, glucose, maltose, dextrose, fructose, to me a course of Ducolax and the horror it brings with it is just a Tuesday, so there is no one anywhere in the world faster than me when taking a dump. When I gotta go...I GOTTA GO. The bloating and discomfort is next level. It's all over in the time it takes to yell OH MY GOD NOOO! The real time is taken while trying to make the toilet habitable for other humans when I'm done. Flushed 6 times, scrubbed from top to bottom, and disinfectant spray on everything...BIOHAZ CLEANUP CREW TO CUBICLE ONE...STAT!! I actually hiccupped, belched, and shit myself simultaneously at my desk once. The looks of horror, shock, and disgust were totally worth it. I'll bet he doesn't bring that up again.

    Love these videos. I do have a question that I’ve wondered about for some time. The term pillock, I know more or less what it means, I was just curious where that word comes from. Every time I’ve heard it used the amount of frustration and disgust in the speakers voice makes it so vivid about the emotion they’re feeling.

    You can always tell a company that doesn't have a good HR department by looking at their signs. It's actually the best way to find out about the culture of a company, (a bad company) to work for when you go on the interview and encounter sign after sign. Even if it's not egregious, just sheer volume of telling people what to do plastered on every wall I would NOPE out of there. Thanks for broadcasting your toxicity that would have taken me months to figure out after I get hired.

    The hypocrisy of the sign writer who asked people to be kind and not insult the staff, which is okay to do. But they started by insulting and pre judging a large portion of the population. If I seen that walking into the store I'll walk out

    I work with a couple of people who use the ONE AND ONLY employee restrrom as a way to take extra breaks. Since there is only one, (small store, usually 5-7 employees there at a time, maximum), if you are waiting outside that door to use the restroom, this becomes a problem. Sometimes, the people are in there for ten or fifteen minutes! Amazingly, their long restroom breaks usually take l when it is close to the end of their shift, or there is undesirable heavy labor taking place. Sad that a sign has to beput up, but i get it.

    'Government handout' happened in America during covid times. Illness and crazy public versus staying home with 'government handout' money. Most people didn't work. Those that did as servers were in a tough place as mentioned above.

    The problem with America is that employees' rights aren't as protected as they are here.
    Americans struggling to make ends meet are often too scared to stand up to employers, who can sack them on the spot apparently on a whim.
    I see many stories of Americans taking annual leave (or their equivalent of it) to attend family events like weddings, funerals, birthdays, and even the birth of their children, and then getting a call saying "Bob phoned in sick, we need you to cover for him", and then getting fired if they (completely reasonably) choose not to cover for Bob, and stay to watch their child enter the world instead.
    Personally, I'll happily refrain from booking (say) Christmas off, as I no longer have young children, and I have a colleague (who I get along with very well) who does, so I would give him, and probably anyone else the opportunity to take that time off. But I'd only come in to cover if it wasn't my shift anyway because the double pay makes it worthwhile, not because my boss threatened to fire me if I didn't.
    I'm very much aware I have a great job, and work with some great people, but I've had jobs where employers have tried to pull stuff on me in the past. It's sometimes worked, but I'm too old and jaded for that sort of nonsense now.
    But I'm still glad I don't live and work in America!

    I remember once walking across the shop floor and the manager was on the phone telling someone to come to aisle 4 and pick up a piece of rubbish oh my God why not j6st do it yourself the guy was a complete jerk I was convinced that at the end of the day he waited for the mother ship to come down and collect him and take him back to whatever planet he came from because is sure as hell wasn't this one

    You're in the UK so you might not know this but during the height of covid in the US those government handouts that was mentioned amounted to a little less than $2,000 or around there for the entire duration of covid which is years plus a little bit extra money for your unemployment assuming you qualified. If you were to add all that up it would be poverty level wages. These jobs were competing against poverty and losing! That should tell you of how poorly paid those jobs are...

I apply do not take NO as answer. etc. However that does not mean it is bad rule. Asking is notmal thing to do even in "harasment" scenario. I put harasment into "" as asking and than respecting answer is not harasment, but normal adult behavior.
