this is so mind blowing for me. It's at least for me, high concept truth, explained. giving me insight into my own vulnerabilities and helping me understand how or why I found the value I did. I'm not a cheap person but I find it hard to spend money without regretting it, and it has played a negative role in my life, but his explanation of value through context and perception really helps me see why I feel the way I feel. I'll buy a group of friends some drinks or buy a brand new skateboard and give it to a homeless kid, or just pick up the tap or show up with Pizza at a friends place and I never regret buying those things but when I need some new shoes it is like pulling teeth to get me to buy myself some and once I do I get sever buyers remorse, I finally understand somewhat what is going on in my head here. Not completely as I think I'll have to watch this multiple times to fully get it but it's a insightful explanation of my own insanity. Thank you Rory for real dude.
I love this guy, every time I stumble upon a video I learn something, even after working in this industry for close to 10 years. However... The mental gymnastics marketing people do to reposition advertising as something that contributes to society is baffling. Just accept that you're doing something not valuable to human wellbeing. It's objectively bad for us to be surrounded by ads everywhere we go, be it digitally or IRL. We just don't need all this shit we buy, jesus christ. Look around you, around the room you are right now, and tell me with a clean conscience that everything there is necessary. Marketing makes the world a worse place than it can be. I don't understand why can't these guys just accept that fact and make peace with it (blame it on the bigger system or whatever else). Even when knowing that, you can still allow yourself to enjoy the intricacies of marketing as an art or science.
It isn't all about 'necessary' (here in the West at least). It's also about comfort, convenience, personal taste and discernment. Doing what you have suggested, I've noticed a lot of what I have is not 'strictly' necessary but are a modern convenience. Sofas are a modern invention but they have moved into the role of 'necessary' because our modern brains would see them as such. I have cushions too and I have purposefully not bought 'disposable-fashion' ones but then again I know there is a market for my taste in more high-end. There is a tipping point for me when the price tag outweighs any increase in actual quality and moves into the realm of 'brand for brand's sake.' As you are someone who works in the industry then your brain is able to reverse engineer the advertising around. I worked for many years as a graphic designer and can easily do that. You come across as conflicted and worry that you've sold your soul to the devil! See it as a gift and help others 'read' the advertising around them. 😉😉
The only reason advertisers call themselves marketers is marketing. If this man were the least bit more plain with his language the average Joe would hear his call of "I am your enemy."
This is true if you are familiar with marketing in the context of “the thing that bombards you with ads for nonsense you don’t need and don’t think you want”. It becomes more valuable when you recontextualise it into “how to make a large group of people do something” and/or “how to connect people with products and services they need”. This includes, but is not limited to: * running a vaccination campaign * encouraging literacy in underdeveloped areas * understanding and solving discontentment with government services * getting people into understaffed jobs Etc. His classic example of the train from London to Paris notes that for a tiny fraction of the actual tax money that was spent on the improvement, they could have added wifi on the train and had almost equivalent satisfaction and productivity increases. That’s marketing. Marketing =/= advertising.
Interesting... I watched the video because I haven't seen Ads for years and I wanted to know where marketing was at now.... I think his last point about Ai replacing Ads is already here. :) If I have a use case for an object I can't build myself, I go looking for it on google, which is already enhanced with rudimentary Ai. A lot of successful companies don't advertise but have paid for a high listing in google search results. 'Putting prices up to sell more'. I remember a couple of years ago when I was working at a well known national supermarket in the UK and all the pricing team were getting highly amused as they were going around showing us how they were putting the prices of stuff up and then adding a 'price matched to Aldi' sticker to it. If you can put your prices up to match Aldi then I guess it has to be a win win for them!
I worked in sales for years so I know for a fact that works on people. Whenever I see it though it makes me assume all the tickets that don't say price matched to Aldi are more expensive in Tesco.

i couldn’t agree more with the comments on value here (is Rory ever wrong?!). it’s the one thing that time and again, people seem to misunderstand. I wonder why we seemingly default to an idea that everything has a fixed empirical value?
The bit about subscriptions is so true. UA-cam keeps offering me premium for knock down temporary prices. But I want to know how much will it cost me and how do I get out again if it's not good value.

If every one of the approximate 165 billionaire gave £0.5 billion to the Treasury we could solve the UK debt deficit, child poverty, homelessness and so much more. That would be a nice way for billionaires to give back to the community and help the country
Lol why should they HAVE TO give anything TO ANYONE? Should hott women be required to give some desperate f..ugly gamer that never had sex some sex because she's only giving it to 1 guy?
I used to say that marketing was a waste, but after a while I realised something: Everyone sells some sort of product. Accountants sell their computing skill and knowledge, engineers sell their design abilities, sales sell products and marketing sells...marketing. So Rory's first two and especially his second point that marketing can sometimes if not often be beyond objective valuation measures really hits home. A good marketer is not successful because he sells or causes the sale of products. He's not successful because he improves the client's bottom line. He's only successful if he sells marketing. Sometimes that coincides with value creation and sometimes it does not. The client emperor might have no clothes, but so long as he thinks he's getting actual value and si long as he's paying the service provider then is the provider not successful?
He speaks a lot of sense…maybe he was in a roll, but why the video maker didn’t get him to ‘do it again, but this time without your hands covering half your face please’ is a mystery!
Ive got a question. I know a few people who say advertising doesnt affect them whatsoever. While i believe its true they wont buy anything just because theyve seen an advertisement, surely it cant have zero effect?
Few people see and advert an immediately go an buy something, or consume something is some way. It is volume thing, and sometime the company just need to remind people they exist. Most people find ad annoying much of the time, or are indifferent to them on the surface, but that doesn't mean they don't have an effect. Often companies are selling an idea rather than concept and this that idea that get tied to the brand.
I was wary about starting a gym subscription but needed to for some training. When I checked the cancellation procedure they lied to me 3 times about how to do so. I immediately cancelled the payment at the bank and told them I wouldn’t go back. If it had been clear I might have stayed longer.
How is the foil cap on the cans pointless? Surely it gives the consumer a reasonable confidence that where they're about to put their mouth hasn't got any harmful bacteria/chemicals/dust on.
If you're going to yoink clips for B-roll from other creators, the least you could do is credit them. SAMTIME and Marques Brownlee to name at least 2 that I recognised.
His book, Alchemy, is a must read. You really do need a slow way (e.g. reading a book) to absorb all Rory has to offer. He’s too quick in interviews to be able to fully understand everything he says. The book stops time for you to actually learn his mindset and let your own mind cement the new connections.
Regarding the subscription example and similar situations, I've always been astonished why ethical companies aren't putting more effort into calling out unethical competitors, since it's only a matter of time when such players are going to damage the market as a whole by destroying the trust of many current and future customers. This happens over and over again.
Is this Rory marketing himself.... maybe, If so I think it's working because I've made a note to search for his book (I assuming he's written at least one).
I have NEVER watched a Rory Sutherland video or even a short clip where I didn't learn something hugely valuable. This man is a gift.

i couldn’t agree more with the comments on value here (is Rory ever wrong?!). it’s the one thing that time and again, people seem to misunderstand. I wonder why we seemingly default to an idea that everything has a fixed empirical value?
I do appreciate a fellow who loves his lanyards
He has a lot of them!
The bit about subscriptions is so true. UA-cam keeps offering me premium for knock down temporary prices. But I want to know how much will it cost me and how do I get out again if it's not good value.
rare example of a suit who isn't a complete self entitled corporate rat, and actually uses their knowledge to help those less fortunate - respect Rory.
Great stuff, love it, thanks. Can you share what you'll be doing in the Philippines? I spent a couple of years out there in the Casino industry, great place to work.
Fantastic as always.
🌞Undoubtedly 🌚They're hardwired.
Definitely see AI being a huge part of marketing moving forward. Great insight. Thx for the video.
Rory Rocks!
the moment where the power went out was epic
Yes! 9:42 That should honestly be a law. Anything you can sign up for online you should be able to cancel just as easily online.
12:50 *gets caught eavesdropping*
Me: Don't mind me, I'm honing my marketing skills
Interestingly ingenius speech.
A good portion of this can be translated as “I still have to make a living, I’m not a UA-cam celebrity yet”
Digital Bath is my favourite song by them! Try that or Change (In the House of Flies) 🔥🔥🔥
Very helpful insight in marketing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Valuable information 👍
💪💪
This is gold!
How is the foil cap on the cans pointless? Surely it gives the consumer a reasonable confidence that where they're about to put their mouth hasn't got any harmful bacteria/chemicals/dust on.
on subscriptions Rory must be talking about Adobe
Suggestion: Don't have text coming up on the screen while he's talking that is different to what he's saying.
