- She went viral the other day after recording a call with her boss when she was trying to quit her jobt. In that call her boss called her work terrible, called her a liar, a cheat and accused her of being lazy. In short, he was despicable.
I have a conversation with her to find out exactly what happened, the context behind it to try and finally understand once and for all. We spoke about what it was like to be in that position as well as her having some great advice for those who are also sitting in a similar position.

This manager/CEO is the classic example of "people quit Managers, no jobs".
I know I have. Had a couple jobs I quite enjoyed and was exceptionally good at, but worked for a crappy manager and left. One was for a large national company, not that my job was way up in the company or anything, but they would do their exit interviews by phone, and it would not be someone from the local office giving it. They would honestly take your input into consideration and also indicated if they would re hire you. That manager was moved. Likely not demoted, but definitely not in a management position. They also told me I would have a job with them any time I wanted to come back. I know they moved the manager because I had several friends still there. Several people prior to me had very similar exit interviews.
Gillian Welch wrote it into her song "Everything is Free": "I never minded working hard, it's who I'm working for."
As soon as he said, "Imma make it four weeks," I would have replied, "And I've just made it four seconds. I resign."
Brilliant. The kind of thing I always think of a week after I needed it 😂😂😂.

They've never been held accountable before, they have no reason to assume they will be now.

Yeah I was being harassed by a direct co-worker and went to HR and they didn't do s*** about it. Nobody was helping me. It was making me physically and mentally sick. My doctor signed me off for a 3-month medical leave and at the end I called the current manager to tell him I quit I'm not coming back. He was so pissed he was trying to convince me to come back. Dude this job is killing me and none of you are doing anything about the man harassing me so that is a hard no. My husband at the time worked there and he goes running to the husband trying to get him to convince me to come back. You're all acting like you can't live without me but the two years that I've been showing up to an abusive toxic place and nobody gave a s*** about me. Just stop the absurdity. After a total of 22 years of which I highly enjoyed the first 20 you will never see me again.... my kids very briefly worked at the same store in high school but ended up quitting and getting jobs getting paid better. They were making more than their dad working there and he had worked there for 36 years.
I had a boss tell me in a face to face that I should be in a job with no human contact because I was too stupid to talk to anyone. That was 45 years ago and I still remember how I felt and the fact that I stood up without a word and walked out to my car and drove away.

My response to that would be, "If you don't like one week notice, I can make it immediate."
Contracts in the UK and EU are different. Many of them have a required notice period.
I'm in America, companies here, after decades of "right sizing" and firing people without a hint of notice, are LUCKY if an employee gives then 2 weeks notice.

@@hollysmith1347 Yeah or lose weight. However I found I could not be complaining about it, and going to the doctor for it was assinine I was told. That I lost around 17kg in 4 months was a 'good thing'. For the full picture I was on a good normal weight when it started.
No it was not, it was taking a sledge hammer to my muscles and I got nerve damage by being underweight. Heck, I even got specialized food to gain weight and it took me almost three years to gain enough to be out of the danger zone and on a healthy level.

Most gain weight, but there are others that lose weight.
It's terrible. Hair loss, acne, brain fog, more prone to getting sick, fatigue, mood swings etc. Are some of the other symptoms.

I was the target of gaslighting, narcissistic behaviors from a supervisor. I had to go the therapy to heal. Now I don't tolerate any of this behavior anymore. No job is worth it.
I went through something similar, but in my case the term is "and then we got new management."

Exactly my experience!
I have worked for large impersonal organisations as well as small /family-run companies who know all their employees by name, but in general I have always found that the employee is expected to be loyal and completely invested in their company, the employer and their role yet the reverse is that when they are no longer needed they are to leave immediately with no fuss and - if required - no paid time to attend interviews or for their pay packet to include full wages covering any contested hours/ days of the notice period.
Basically exactly as you stated in your comment, despite it being unfair and far harder for the individual to bounce back and get through the situation unscathed and stress-free.
It’s disgusting how companies can do this almost universally and that it’s expected - even accepted due to how common it is - even when the employee feels taken advantage of but still goes that extra mile to remain professional and generous (because of their integrity) and tries to ensure a smooth transition even though it only benefits the employer.
I’m glad stuff like this is called out and bad practises exposed. They deserve to be. I haven’t listened to the entire story and background, only this video, so not sure if the particular person or firm can be identified, but in my opinion she has every right to reveal any events and harmful incidents involving her as long as she is honest and doesn’t declare anything illegal or intend to deceive regards the other party.
My job that I just left was so toxic and I am still suffering. I phoned in a couple of weeks ago with a severe migraine and my boss swore at me. I have a witness to this and several other things. My boss stole money from our charity box for coffee money and various other personal stuff. I worked free during each Covid lockdown. I am taking this human piece of garbage to court because she created the toxic work environment. I actually had to take a 4 month sick leave. What bugs me is that I went out my way for this company so many times and I get treated like garbage. I can hardly wait to go to court. Everything is documented and dated and I have secured a labor lawyer.
In the US I think people, young generation are finally changing this. They will not take the toxicity anymore and neither should anyone else

A smidge under £30k a year was the entry level salary for the Met Police 20 years ago. Adjusting for inflation, that's over £50k today. £30k isn't even the median average for the most deprived parts of England today (NE England, £31k); In London the median is up to £45k!

I worked at a small business out of college. Soon after I started the business was taken over by the narcissist son. He was beyond awful. I tried for a year & then professionally gave my notice. He was so angry he told me I had to leave at that moment and wasn’t even allowed to pick up my stuff. Not long after I left, so did almost everyone else. A year and half later, the business went under. Bosses like this shoot themselves in the foot. They’re scared & incompetent & take everyone else down with them.

So many so called managers these days can't even manage their own lives and cause so many mental health issues . In my day (1970s) you had to work your way up the ladder so that you could appreciate the work done by the lower but essential staff. I am so glad I am now retired .

@@lama2584 $30,000 is barely over $14.00 an hour. The national average is much higher than 30K. $30k is basically the poverty level or below, and is below minimum wage in a lot of states in the US.

I worked for a jerk like that for nearly 10 years (no HR dept there either) because I didn't value myself enough to get out; and my husband at the time, instead of supporting me, threatened me by saying things like, "don't you quit your job!" Praise to her for taking care of herself.
Going forward..never, ever think any company's HR is on your side.

I quit a designer job without a backup a couple of years ago. I worked for a Jekyll/Hyde manager who was grood to chat to, but an utter bellend five minutes later.
I got back after Xmas break. Caught flak straight off the bat, so quit the next morning.
The relief was incredible.
People need to name these companies and managers. Shame is the only thing that will change them.

The company went bust shortly after the conversation, with this pretty scathing review from his investor: "I took quite a hit personally on backing Leo and the business, and I was very disappointed on the costs and progression on sponsorship, it was not at the level I was led to believe."

What she's describing about this boss' behavior sounds like classic abus*er tactics. Especially him saying she wasn't talented - that was his way of making her feel she had to stay because nobody else would take her. AND when he later groveled and apologized, love-bombing her. He expected her to come crawling back. I'm so glad she didn't. His behavior had NOTHING to do with her. He would have done that to anyone. Imagine being in a relationship with him ☠️☠️

It's easier to look back and see what went wrong and how you should have dealt with it. I wish I had the wherewithal to record my boss when she was having a go at my abilities. I ended up doubting myself, and (I can say this now), even thought of driving my car down a steep embankment! I was a nurse in the NHS, I knew my stuff, but lost all confidence in my abilities. Well done to the young lady for coming out stronger.
Sometimes we are like fish in water - we can't see the medium in which we swim. Often there are traumas in our lives which go back to childhood and we channel that. Setting boundaries can be hard but when done once it becomes easier and easier, and eventually automatic.
As a father myself it would break my heart to hear anyone do something like this to my daughter, also I would like her to not be broken by it like this girl seemingly didn’t.

Also, it sounds very likely that the boss was breaking UK law. If a student is producing work that is going to be used by a company then they are entitled to minimum wage. Work experience normally means unpaid.

This girl is so strong. I would have given this boss a piece of my mind out of anger (which is not good). I constantly encouraged the members of my team to reach for the stars and when the opportunities were outside the company we worked in yes I was sad to loose a great person but I also was happy for them. Kindness and encouragement don't cost anything and gain so much for everyone. Also the critic was giving her no information on what to do better. Everything is wrong is not helpful as it doesn't communicate what to expect.
What a great follow up to someone who I was so concerned about! I am so happy that she found a much better job. Her boss was such a manipulative knob and to hear how she is doing now is such a great relief. Thanks, Ben!
Having worked in esports, it really is an industry full of immature ego babies at the top who bought in early with not a lot of money to go around atm.
I was raised where the trend was to always give 2 weeks notice to quit. I have only quit 2 times with out doing the 2 weeks notice. One, I left because my doctor stated that my optical migraine was from the tension in the office and I should consider quiting. I was going on my 2 week vacation, so I turned in my notice effectively the next day with my vacation being my 2 week notice. The second one was a really toxic situation with a man who was the most chauvinistic person I have ever met. I turned in a copy of my resignation to both my boss and the HR office. On advice of the HR office, I met a HR employee and we went thru my file and both of us initialed on each piece of paper in my file. This came into use as they caught him trying to place derogatory complaints in my file, like write ups and client claims.
Back in 2012 I was on a vacation that had been approved 8 months earlier I got a text from my boss asking me to go out on a job. I replied that I was in Jamaica and that there was no way I could make it in time. His reply was "LOL, sorry forgot." He was a good boss and it became a running joke for about six months where he would call/text and ask if I was still in Jamaica before sending me out.
I saw the original post in 2021. I'm so glad her life and work is soooo much better. Living your best life is the best revenge.
If she truly didn't understand any of those things, it's absolutely on her boss. Your employees aren't mind readers. Maybe YOU AS A BOSS SUCK AT COMMUNICATION. Or being a leader in any way, shape, or form.

Recently quit an extremely toxic and stressful workplace that caused me significant amount of anxiety and significantly affected my quality of life. Left the last few days of the workplace crying as the fuckers kept guilt tripping me and FORCED me to work 10 extra days beyond my notice period.
Got hired at an incredible company that values its employees with 3x the pay and also incredible work-life balance.
All I can say is never stop trying for looking for that job that gives you a purpose in life and never give up despite the adversities!

Yeah, those experiences can really stick with you. I mean, I changed a toxic work environment in 2021, and I still sometimes have a hard time trusting my bosses, even though they're totally cool. Once you get burned like that, you're extra careful next time. I hope Tara doesn't have to go through that again and the best of luck for her.😊

I quit a job because one of the higher ups forced me to work a day that I normally had off and that day was also Mother's Day. As a mother myself, I had made plans to celebrate it with my mom and mil and told them that. Didn't matter to them.
So I worked that day and gave my 2 week notice the next day. The OWNER waiting until I was clocking off my last shift to reach out to see what they could do to keep me. In a polite way, I told them 'too little, too late.'
Same same with......a pathetic bar job. The bar manager used to keep me late so I'd miss any transport home and gave to walk home around midnight (I was a 21 years old female). So I just gave a day's notice and he begged me to stay. I'd like to say that was satisfying but at the time once I'd morally won I didn't care any more.

I’m dark skinned, not thinned skinned. I was requested to work here for my ability to increase profitability. I got called out for requesting my due annual holiday. Boss demanded I hold holiday over because they had ‘family concerns’. Turns out their personal assistant made an incorrect date booking for their child’s birthday.. I was visiting my family back home for two weeks due to my father going through his dying process. Blacker than dark. When I offered my resignation I was told that I was not considered decent and should have not accepted the position if I couldn’t control my personal life.
This was absolutely mind numbing to watch. That poor lady. He sounds like a full blown classic narcissist.
One important concept I have learned in my years, which every employee needs to keep in mind, is: you are not your work. You exist beyond your work.
Also: You have skills a majority of people don't have, which is easy to forget when you mostly interact with people who fill similar roles to you and therefore have very similar skill sets.
This is a sign that toxic environments impact how we look and feel. This lady looks WAY BETTER - less stressed, much healthier and much happier today than she did in the original video.
I wish I could tell about the toxic manager I had when I worked for the UK Government. He was one of the worst people I have ever had the misfortune of meeting and was the reason why I quit. This was many years back now and I doubt I could remember enough of the details. After I left, he eventually got a 'sideways promotion' after a racism incident (that he should have been fired for) that cost the department a great deal of money in compensation to my colleague who suffered the abuse.
If that young adult was my kid or even my significant other being talked to in this manner would be so compelling for me to humble this toxic boss by giving the him a half a year off from having a broken jaw, arm, leg, and mostly his ego/false pride.

I have worked for small businesses most of my 27 years in the workplace. There seems to be a personality type that start small businesses. In general they never enjoyed working for other people due to the perception that they were being exploited and or didn't deal with being told what to do. They tend to feel that they are in a position where they own you and can treat you in any way they choose. I have learnt a whole lot about poor management of people due to observing and being on the receiving end of that kind of behaviour. The worst was when I didn't have a break for 2 years because the business would crash if I did. All for basically dead end job's with little pay. I now work for a large corporation where we treated humanely.
Has the narcissistic boss made a statement about his notoriety? I would love to hear his lame excuses. 😊
She looks way healthier now: Her affect, her emotional stability, and not that weight is important, but a lot of times people overeat when they are stressed.

After years of being both an employee and a boss I can tell you, if you decide to leave because you know it's what's best for you, don't them anyone us aggression or guilt to make you stay. Otherwise a few months later you'll be right back where you started but those few months will have been even worse than before. Also, never let someone's bad behaviour push you to leaving before you're ready. If you know you want to go, figure out what works best for you... if you have no financial backup, stay at the crappy job long enough to secure a new one... and start doing the job you were hired to do. People like this woman are helpful and kind... and end up getting a load of extra work, overtime and unpaid responsibility dumped on them. They'll need someone to take those jobs anyway, best to let them start sooner than later.

Don't argue with a narcissist. The best to do is ignoring them. They are incapable of empathy so you don't need to pity them. They will never pity you.
Leo is a horse's behind. I'd have told him not to look for me in week 2 - 4. I'd have just removed the job from my CV (resume).
Boss clearly a narcissist. That last call was a “love bombing”
Bosses like this need to be publically named and shamed.
Several jobs that an Uncle of mine worked he was not appreciated and when he eventually quit they had to hire multiple people to replace his work load. In more than one instance they tried to get him back. One employer even came to his house to ask him to come back, which he turned down as too little too late!

The so-called boss’s attitude and reactions are typical of a man who thinks he had a good chance of turning the professional working relationship into one with *benefits* and when he finds out that’s not the case he then gets nasty on a personal level.
No matter how bad your company is doing, it really isn't hard to be a decent human being. I will not excuse her boss because of stress, because maybe the Sunday call might have been stress, but the next day he should have recovered enough to human, and he really didn't.

Her previous boss was absolutely not a leader … just a ‘wanna be’! It’s unfortunate he isn’t going to see this … no doubt he probably felt justified in what he did! It was like vengeance! God will address his behaviours at some point!
So glad this lady was able to grow from this as experience … kind of like the silver lining in a bad situation!

Unless it's in your signed contract notice is a courtesy to your employer, it is NOT MANDATORY. You can walk away anytime just as they can fire you at any time.
