  • today we spent another day with lola tessie looking at her old money collection with all the old filipino sentimo coins and notes before the philippines peso. Until this day we never actually new the philippines sentimo even existed, we just assumed its always been the philippines peso.
This was just a day were we spent some more quality time with tessie relaxing and having another good catchup , and of course to have some of lola tessies famous chicken adobo which by the way is the BEST. It could possibly be the best chicken adobo in zambales.

The person in the P500 bill is the late Senator Benigno Aquino, the husband of former President Corazon C. Aquino, the first woman president of the Philippines.

I thought that she would have had the much older Philippine coins because she's older (no offense), but the oldest coins that I could see are just from the 70's. One is the big and somewhat beige 1 peso coin. The other one is a rare 5 peso, Ferdinand Marcos coin, and I think that it's harder to find than the coins minted during the American occupation.
I was hoping that she would show some coins that circulated during the Spanish occupation. Those coins are, of course, not the oldest, but they are some of the rarest in the world.

She's talking about the Loon, a kind of duck. Hence Loony.
Centavos or Centimos are just the local (and Spanish) words for Cents. So 50 centavos = 50 cents. 2x 50 cents = 1 peso. The Philippine peso in the past was directly equivalent to $1 during the American period. So 50 cents in the past would be about 25 pesos now. The peso _now_ is worth less than the peso in the past. The peso only really started to go down during the 80s during the Marcos era, then again during the Asian Financial Crisis in 1998. I'm not as old as Lola Tessie but I still remember my childhood in the 90s when 50 cents still existed in Philippine money and was enough to buy like a bubblegum or something. It's worthless now. Only reason 25 cents still exist is because supermarkets like to use the 99.99 trick instead of saying "100".

The square 1 centavo and the thick 10 peso coin was from the Marcos era, philippine currency was stronger and the economy was booming.

back in the day where a filipino centavo still have value. i vaguely remember my great grandma told me a bottle of coke was about 10cents.
the guy in the 500? his wife is the reason philippines economy plummeted.

fun facts 100 trillion Zimbabwe dollars is equivalent to to $0.40 US cents in the height of hyperinflation. Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value - zero. Fiat money is a government-issued currency that is not backed by anything physical. The value of fiat money is based on supply and demand and the stability of the issuing government, rather than the worth of a commodity or other asset backing it.
While fiat money gives governments’ central banks greater control over the economy because they control how much currency is printed, one danger of this is that governments will print too much of it, resulting in hyperinflation.
