Best comment I actually stopped listening to them with Anette and forgot about them came back for Floor and lost my mind. The chills she gives when she sings O.O
Yes, Floor proves everyone wrong on anything about singing. To clarify, Floor might not be the best singer on planet but she's one of very few who don't just have a great voice or a good understanding of music. Floor goes one step further and combines her voice and her technical skills with her knowledge of music theory and her acting skills to play with emotions like no other singer I know ever could. So when she is on stage it's not just her voice, each move, each blink of an eye she does and every gesture is well thought through and helps to tell the storys and that is what Nightwishs music is mostly about, they are telling stories and because of that, Floor is the best choice for Nightwish, none of the other Singers were able to do that at this level.
You should give Anette's more recent solo work a listen. Her new album is pretty good. Her voice has matured a bit since her Nightwish era, in a way I really enjoy.
Tarja was very unique at the time. Annette was put in a bad spot trying to sing the classic Tarja songs. Not possible. I do think like you that the 2 records with Annette may be my overall favorites from Nightwish. Studio was great, but live Floor takes almost all of them to a whole new level. Respect to Tarja and Annette. Floor Jansen 100%!!!!!!!!!
👍Do,i get what you are saying,it's funny in a way how people react to the studio albums. A lot of people like the two studio albums with Annette, but seem to like Floor more singing most of these songs.😆 Stylistickly and tone wise i like Floor the best, but i have great respect for all 3 singers. Also ,with these "discussions",sometimes people bring up the MOST sold records, wich are Annette's albums, if i'm right, but i have searched the internet for DVD or B-Ray 's selling numbers, but couldn't find any. I gues that "showtime storytime" must be a best seller to and "end of an era" with Tarja also would have pretty good sales numbers. Just saying, not knowing the whole picture gives a little distorted view.😉🤘
OMG yes. lol nothing says: great work environment like a bunch of moody, cheesed off people, oh nad hey: here's stuff that someone else did, make it your own, while sounding and being kind of like them, and while we're at it: DON'T MESS UP!!!...no pressure. (Anette: l am so calling my agent, I wonder if cookies would help.)
@@strabel803 I only heard once and nemo with Anette.. I think I had a CD and possibly a random tape that a dude a tower? or something shoved in my hand waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when.
Cannot agree more Ken. I know you gotta be nice but Floor Jansen hands down lol. What I find impressive is that I prefer nightwish’s live recordings with floor better than the studio recordings (even the ones she is on). I think that’s a sign of a great singer and artist.
There are a few songs where the studio version is killer. Sleeping sun is one of them. Neither Tarja nor Floor can do that song live as good as the original recording. If you think otherwise listen to the original recording again.
Tarja's vocals are absolutely gorgeous. Tarja is still my favorite Nightwish vocalist. But Ken helped me appreciate the range of skills that Floor brings to the table.
I knew Floor in her previous bands, but I was still suspicious. After the concert I attended, jesus, she is amazing. Tarja is still my favorite, but Floor is impressive.
Problem with Tarja is that she has beautifull sound, but only one beautifull sound... That limits her dramatic capabilities, and that is where Floor with her enormous palet and command of textures and tones and ranges truely shines
@@rientsdijkstra4266 exactly, Floors emotion transfer to the audience, also through using all the ranges and styles, is what makes her outstanding and what I miss from Tarja. Tarja has the better Soprano Voice in my opinion, but just that, the better overall package is Floor. (I wonder what it would sound like if Tarja actually sang one of the more "Pop-ish" songs like Storytime... could be interesting)
Tarja for me, even I recognize is just a matter of taste and sensibility. She gaves me the chills like anyone, but Floor is a beast very versatil, and profesional. Annette is great singer too. But Im in love with the old Nightwish, their songs, and the chemestry with music composition and Tarja's voice. I also like very much Tarja's solo career she has great songs very emotional and epics and she has also a classical career. You can find videos of Tarja singing ave marias, Puccini, Bach, etc and is amazing. Metal, Rock, Pop, Electronic, Classical, she can sing anything. If we measure with points: Tarja 100, Floor 99, Annette 90. In my opinion of ourse.
I really got in to Nightwish because of Floor. I did try and discover everything with Tarja although I do like her voice and that she is a hell of a singer I just couldn't get used to her pronounciacion. Some people don't mind that and I tried really hard to see past that. But that does not take away that she is why Nightwish became such a huge band and that she is one hell of a singer. So it sad to see how some people attack each other because of the "who is better thing". To each their own, and in one way were lucky that we can pick from 3 singers who are all 3 of them really good.
" *the chemistry with music composition and Tarja's voice* " ... Yeap, those old songs were written for Tarja specifically and thus match her vocals perfectly which is why I find other singers loose a few points when performing those old Tarja songs. Just like you I also like the old Nightwish and their songs more, because they are younger, darker, more metallic, more powerful.. as they grew older and mature so did their sound become more relaxed, mature and melodic, still an excellent band but their old stuff are unsurpassed. Current Floor has range, old Tarja had youthful energy, darkness, power, presence and supreme operatic voice; so it's both a shame that he chose one of her most quiet and melodic songs (Phantom of the opera) to "make the comparison fair" and that Floor's chosen live performance is of "Ghost love score" that is erroneously considered by some people to be the definitive version, when the original studio version is simply better. It's the old Nightwish for me, and I think my preference has a lot to do with them being both young and wildly talented so I would most likely have chosen the old Nightwish even if no one had left the band and the band members were the exact same people. As another example of this my favourite Maiden are the 80s Maiden
I agree.. Floor is the best of two different styles by combining the best attributes of each previous two singers (classical vs pop rock) with her own style.. Her style is more empathetic to the emotion of each song.
Has someone who found Nightwish through Anette, Floor is the superior singer. I find her voice to be more pleasing to the ear, and I think thought not a vocal coach she has a much greater range than both of the others.
On one hand, I believe each singer is exactly what the band needed at the time. The music that came out in each 'era' would not be the same if it were anybody else. On the other hand, I really believe Floor, with her versatility, is the key that unlocks the true potential of Tuomas's songwriting abilities. I don't think we've yet seen their magnum opus and with Marco leaving the band there will always be the 'what if's', but nevertheless I'm excited for the future of this band and the stories they will tell!
I feel like "The greatest show on earth" is pretty much their magnum opus. :P Though maybe that's just my personal view on it. As for Marco leaving the band, I wonder if they can find even a decent replacement for him. There's something about his facial expressions and unique rough and powerful voice that's just hard to find. But I will hold out hope for a good replacement and pray that they don't end up like Battle Beast, whom didn't have the same feel in their songs anymore when Anton left.
I agree with you there. I can't really imagine Imaginaerum with Tarja. The sad part was that Anette couldn't really do any of the old songs. I have seen videos of her doing Nemo and it was just sad. in those songs and live she was definitely the week link. Floor can do the older songs, she can do the Imaginaerum and Dark Passion Play songs and brings her own spin to them. I don't really like Human :|: Nature and Marco leaving is quite a hit, I think the contrast with his voice enabled some really great duets and songs sung by him like The Islander are also great.
I saw Nightwish at Wacken with Tarja an later with Anette when she just joined. I couldn't believe they casted the whole world and this was the best one they found. The concert was really hard to stand. Especially cos she kept showing off, where I was thinking why does she do that, does she really believe to be a good live singer?
Ken I agree with you, Floor is incredible! really metal, really symphonic, with also pop deviations, perfect pitch, lot of power but sweetness at the same time, she is an awesome singer!
Floor is my favorite. She can basically do anything (opera to death growl), she has great pronunciation and emotional connection to the lyrics, great stage presence and the band has never looked as happy and comfortable on stage as with her. My second favorite Nightwish singer would actually have to be Marko, although I give all credit to the previous two female leads that both put their stamp on the great history of the band.
They're all great. As a Finnish guy I think I should say Tarja but they're all great like all Helloween, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Judas Priest and Anthrax vocalists.
Floor all day every day for me, but I respect what the other 2 did for the band. The band wouldn't be there for Floor to be in if it weren't for Tarja and Anette.
I like Floor Jansen the best here because I like her compression voice as well as her operatic and I also appreciate her tonality and dynamics. She's very interesting even tho she doesn't move much.
Tarja is fantastic, that make me shiver. Not easy to sing in this quality in open places. Floor also gives me goosebumps and has an incredible performance. 2 differente fantastic divas.
The bottom line is Floor gives me chills while Tarja and Anette never did. She can do the operatic thing along with straight-up rock. As a bonus, she looks like Xena on stage.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 ...Tarja is a generic Opera singer. That's all she's got; unoriginal, limited will her throaty, unsteady vibrato. FLOOR has more Technique & Style in her Singing "Arsenal" than Tarja ever had. And Jinger? She's entirely different and nothing to do with Floor's gorgeous Voice.
I really have to hand it to the guy in charge of Nightwish, forget his name, but for someone to have hired three singers, all of whom have been different but amazing and well received by fans, is quite an accomplishment. I don't think any other band can match that record.
Now having watched the video, great analysis, Floor is unreal in how she can do any vocal style(even death vocals). Now Annette, I really loved how she converted the operatic songs into her style so well live. You're right that she wasn't the live performer the other two were, but she handled it quite well. But Floor, she blows both Tarja and Annette away.
Ken I’ve never heard one note played by this band I have heard however that the songstresses are above average That being said I will tune in and listen just as sight unseen is a phrase we use I will add voice unheard and say Gabriela g is the right fit Kayla reeves also a prime candidate I tend too gravitate toward the ken tamplin method and motto how to sing BETTER than anyone else Stay frosty Jw davis
His name is Tuomas Holopainen. That's his band. Almost all Finnish metal bands are creations of their mastermind: Nightwish, Children Of Bodom, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Lordi etc. etc.
@@adaher Do you know why Tarja is only opera trained but Floor has it all opera, Classic sopran singing power full but worsed is Anette comon pop singer not made for metal.
Floor gives me goose bumps every time i listen and by far for me is the best singer that is my opinion, her vocal range is amazing and get's the emotions going a very talented singer.
My opinion this is kinda like the Queen debate. They all brought something to the table. But like Freddie, Tarja is "the sound" of Nightwish. A symphonic metal band with an actual opera singer (yes Ken she is very much trained, her whole early life was Opera, she's basically a national treasure) is almost unheard of. Annette brought that pop sound which has stayed with the band (influence) and then we get to Floor. Floor is the all-rounder. She does the opera elements enough justice and she absolutely dominates the pop and rock elements in ways I hadn't realized this band was capable of until Floor. So while my heart always goes to Tarja first and I prefer the bands sound with her at the helm, I must say Floor is prolly the best overall sound for the band as they are today, she's fantastic and possibly the greatest female rock singer out there right now. Great video and series Ken!
That's a nice balanced opinion, which I pretty much agree with. Oddly, I probably appreciate Tarja more now than I did originally. I always loved some Nightwish songs in the past (the whole Wishmaster album is a good example) but some of them I really didn't like, Ghost Love Score being one.... I know that's controversial but I'm not convinced by Tarja singing that song as it just kinda peters out at the end. But, I still prefer Tarja singing things like 'End of all Hope' and 'Slaying the Dreamer'. The bottom line is that Nightwish benefitted from both Floor and Tarja. Then of course, there is Anette, who, to my mind is on two of the best albums in 'Imaginaerum' and 'Dark Passion Play'. Not great live (of course), but actually I love her in 'Slow, love, Slow' and 'Scaretale' and I don't think that either Floor or Tarja could replicate her playfulness. I just love aspects of all three!
I am so sorry nitghtwish to me has had to much lead singers but to me the only one for me is TARJA although I did like the lady in the black dress but I love this band is one of my favorites bands from another country I think if I pay for a ticket to watch them live it has to be the original line up for me I allso think for me TARJA has a presence on stage for me and she gives me my moneys worth on the ticket I bot to watch them live she allso has songs she sings with this band I love to she gives me the best of hevey music to classical music to I would have love to see her in Andrew lloyd webber phantom of the opera stage show what she would have brot to that stage show I would love to buy a ticket for that can you amagin if she was in that I would go and watch her if I had to pick from all four lady's TARJA is my favourite they should have kept her I bot the dvd of her last concert with her the fans were crying they wanted her to stay so did I so when a band works stick with it don't change it
I agree mostly on everything, still I think the reason why Anette didnt sound so good on live its because she had to forced her voice to sing Tarja songs and she wasnt there, she didnt get help to adapt the songs and probably dont have the ability to do so. On the other hand she had a sound that is different that the other two. For me the three personify the facets of a woman Tarja is the ethereal kind of angelic side Anette is the woman, seductive somehow vulnerable, yet with a lot of personality and Floor is the warrior, a force of nature, powerful yet gentle.
@@doglover7377 It wasn't until the last concert was over that Tarja received the open letter in her dressing room telling her that she was no longer in the band, so whatever they were crying for, it couldn't have been about that as neither Tarja or the fans knew about it at the point the recording was made. The press conference that was held afterwards, on the other hand, was very emotional and Tarja was certainly crying then. There were a lot of things that happened behind the scenes that led up to that moment though and, while it was not a popular outcome, it wasn't an easy decision for them to write the letter and it certainly took it's toll on the rest of the band, particularly Tuomas (and all of this has been very well documented in various places). Had they not wrote the letter when they did, I believe that Tarja had already expressed that her departure from the band was in the pipeline anyway. I absolutely respect anyone's right to have their own favourite amongst the three female vocalists (not four) and have already expressed my own opinion on this. Given that Tarja and Tuomas formed the band together, she was always going to be a hard act to follow but times change and I think that the evolution of the band, whether through necessity, choice or circumstance has cumulated very well and each singer has had a valuable contribution during their different eras. Nightwish, as a whole, benefitted enormously from the skilful compositions throughout of Tuomas and the professional, musical talents of each of the band members and everything combined has made them what they are today.
Tarja laid the foundation of the soprano led symphonic metal and then Anette filled in with the pop elements but the brilliance of adding Floor is that not only can she handle the back catalogue of both Tarja and Anette, on top of that Floor is also a full-fledged metal singer which means she is a more perfect fit for Nightwish than almost anyone else could have been.
Anette is a nurse and still records, I believe she has a new tune out, it might even be today! She isn't a bad vocalist, she was just the wrong choice to replace Tarja, and all that's on Tomas Holopainen. I think she was unfairly treated by many of the fans, the shoes were too big to fill.
I like some of the songs in the Anette era group in her voice more than I do in Floor's voice just because they are more...pop style in nature, like Amaranth. Same goes for some of the Tarja era songs but. Yes. I do think Anette was treated unfairly. I do think she was a better choice as far as crowd interaction goes though. It just seemed more forced with Tarja
The thing is, I really don't see Annette as having replaced Tarja, Tuomas probably wanted to take Nightwish in a different direction and was limited by Tarja's style, so when he got the chance he changed the style of the band completely. But I really feel Floor is the best of both worlds and has a better stage presence and chemistry, plus an ability to distort her voice to give her a harder rock feeling, which the other couldn't, or at least didn't.
You know, I don't even think she was a poor replacement for Tarja. I think that if Tuomas had just had Anette sing *her* songs for Live performances, it would've been fine. But he wanted to perform Tarja's songs still, and that wasn't fair to Anette. Bye Bye Beautiful also wasn't fair to Anette, or to make a music video of her singing it in; they might as well have put a neon sign over her head for fans to take their anger out on. And if they'd released The Escapist (instead of Amaranth) as their first hit single with Anette, she would've been welcomed by fans much more graciously. A much more solid song. Multiple mistakes on Tuomas's (and the rest of Nightwish) fault.
Unfortunately whoever the band brought in to replace Tarja would have faced the wrath of the fans. A couple of good albums but I feel NW were only cruising for a few yrs with Anette until they decided to replace her with Floor. Fortunately Floor is so good at what she does in being able to do justice to the Tarja era songs as well as Anette's and the the albums with her as well that most fans took to her instantly.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 Tarja has to much vibrato to do ANY of the grit that Floor can sing - hence Marco sang those parts for Tarja - nice combo, BUT enter Floor... Marco & Floor both belting out the same melody but harmonizing it with the full grit is magic!
Totally agree. Tarja set the standard and Floor said hold my beer. Anette is a good singer. Just not for Nightwish IMO. I smiled as soon as I saw the Floor example was the Wacken show as IMO that is the one where she absolutely killed it. The best I've seen of her live recordings doing GLS. So same sorry to the Tarja die hards out there but I think Nightwish was great with Tarja as lead but is now perfected with Floor as lead.
I have to agree that Floor does a great job of bringing Nightwish's long career together in the best possible way. And she also has proven herself with her albums that she just doesn't fill the role of the previous singers, but manages to step up to the plate and show her own talent and wonderful voice capabilities.
Floor Jansen is a beast! I saw her live along with Russell Allen as part of Arjen Lucassen's Star One project. Her sister Irene, another great vocalist, was also part of the act. All 3 of them owned the stage!
My preference is also Floor. She has a beautiful voice that works perfectly with the band. I don't think that pure bel canto works as well with the band.
The real art of Floor Jansen is not in the operatic notes or the belts, the growls, or anything like, the REAL art is in the way she combines these things to tell a compelling story, that engages you and takes you for a ride... building step by step and Leading to those grand finales that she is so good at...
I just began listening to Nightwish this year 2021. I came across the band while watching "The Charismatic Voice" reviews on UA-cam. So, I don't have the years and years of history with the band as many others have. However, I quickly began a deep dive into their music, live performances, and other online reviews. I purchased two of their DVD's (one with Tarja and one with Floor) and bought a ticket to their concert next year in LA, 2022. The music and melodies of Nightwish are amazing!! I have to say that I've been impressed by all three vocalists in the band. And I agree with Ken that the recorded albums of Annette are phenomenal vocally and musically. With that said, if I were to choose a favorite vocalist it would be Floor. She's got it ALL!! I'm so glad I came across this band online. Better late than never!!
Well, Floor has not only replaced Tarja and Anette with perfection, bringing their element together and putting her personality together, but now she's also singing parts that Marko used to sing, and she's also doing that with perfection. In the song Planet Hell for example, who doesn't know that Marko sang parts of the song and saw recent videos of Floor singing the entire song alone, would never imagine, it seems that she always sang all the parts. She's the most complete vocalist I've ever seen, I think she can sing anything she's given, and very well.
Whaaaat? You mean Marko hasn't been singing on Planet Hell like he used to? I mean his voice on that song was amazing, why is only Floor singing it? It was supposed to be both male and female vocals and it rocked!!
This is going to cause mayhem 😂 I love all three singers, but enjoyed Annette's era most of all. I got to symphonic from a love of classical, for me it's the fun, bright energy of Annette's voice that appeals to me most. Each singer has brought something great, something new. I wish you'd picked a different Annette track, Storytime or The Siren would have been a fairer comparison, arguably you've selected Tarja and Floor at their peak.
I feel the same. Dont be afraid to express your love for Anette's era, theres a lot of floor stans trying to ruin it for everyone and jump at anyone who criticises her or praises the other singers over her and im so over it.
I think that it is great that you can express your favourite singer and why you feel that way without resorting to slating the others as some others tend to. I think that all three had some great songs with the band that I haven't heard covered any better than their own version. They had different styles which has given Nightwish overall a huge amount of versatility. It has definitely highlighted Tuomas' skill as a composer and songwriter in the different styles that he has been able to incorporate and the bandmembers ability to play them. I agree that it was rather unfortunate to have chosen Anette singing Wishmaster though. I didn't hate it but she was never going to be able to compare with Tarja there. I even prefer Tarja's version to Floor's if I'm honest but Annette's Rest Calm or Turn Loose the Mermaids is amazing!
Floor is my fave and objectively speaking is the best. She has great falsettos, great belts, her intonation is great, and great stage presence. Loved her in After Forever too.
I think people say Tarja is better just out of nostalgia or preference. which is fair. But vocally speaking Floor can do and brings so many elements that Tarja lacks. Pick any album and Tarja sounds pretty much the same.
Without Tarja Nightwish would never have been noticed. That opera element she brought is just amazing. But I really do agree with you that the best studio album was with Anette, and now with Floor, Nightwish is just amazing. Floor would never have joined the band from the beginning. So the journey that the band has taken is just perfect.
I think we all love the memories. Tarja should sing the old stuff, Anette the songs from her time. But Floor is a Killer Queen she can do it all. But I like all three.
My favorite is Floor, but she is Dutch just like me :-p What surprised me most was your belcanto voice, Ken! Wow! Off the charts. Didn't know that side of you :-D I only heard snippets. Not like in this video
@@kentamplin I agree with Ruben. I just randomly clicked on this video, knowing nothing about the channel before. (though I am a long time nightwish fan.) And I had to do a double take and rewind a bit to listen again when I heard you sing the first time. Then while eating had to do another double take at the belt around 10:45 as I could swear that was Jack Black singing. xD
I watched the video again and what I noticed is that the band members were most relaxed and showed the most smiles when they where on stage with Floor. With Floor they seem to completely go for it to make every show the best ever.
All three singers were the best choice for their respective albums, each of them having their own peculiarities. But all the credit goes to Tuomas Holopainen, the composer, who wrote sublime works for each of them while remaining faithful to the idea of Nightwish, always telling his dream but through different voices.
Dude, you are pulling off a Floor Jansen yourself with that high note at the end here, I`m impressed!. I like all four singers of Nightwish, Let us not forget Marco!!, he supported these ladies like no one could have with his voice. Marco on his own is an amazing singer, and great front man. Tarja is the sound of Nightwish, and will always be their Queen. Anette has her unique style too. Floor is off the hook as vocalist and front woman, Nightwish is lucky to have her.
Floor Jansen is the complete package, she has the stage presence, the empathy, the crowd control and not least an amazing voice.. Floor is the right fit for Nightwish !
You're right, Marco was the other impressive member of Nightwish. let us wish him all the best and let´s hope that he comes back in one or the other way to music soon! (There are some duets Marco did with Floor - they are worth to bee listen / see).
I favor Floor, she is Dutch like me, but that's not the reason, although we see her do so much more than just Nightwish. She always shines. She also is a vocal coach and shows her own footage as well as giving examples and doing covers. She is a tall lady too which adds to her stage presence. Although I have seen Tarja and Floor sing together they match. But overall Floor is the best.
It's Floor for me even though I've been "with them" since -97 or -98. I liked, and still do actually, the Tarja era. A lot. And when Anette was introduced I was happy because she was totally different (later it became obvious that she wasn't able to handle the live stuff, but nevertheless...). I since kind of faded out of listening to music other than the radio when driving. I knew that Anette was kicked out, but I actually heard Floor the first time probably when Elan single came out, but still didn't actually listen anything. I was impressed by her performance on the heavy christmas tour though. But it wasn't until three(ish) years ago when I found the "new" Nightwish and I must say that I've been blown away by her. And the band for that matter, somehow their musical progression goes on a same schedule than mine (might be that I'm in the same age group as most of them). But Floor and her ability to sing anything (Ken kinda liked her version of Shallow I think 😉), the covers she uploads on het channel... And there is something in her tonality that really hits me like no other singer does. Can't explain it, anf maybe it's good so.
Tarja is, and will always be, *THE* Nightwish vocalist to me. But Floor is her worthy successor. Already a highly talented vocalist in her own right 20 years prior, Floor just needed the perfect musical partner for the World to finally "discover" her. Anette was not nearly as bad a vocalist as people made her out to be, and I quite enjoyed her bright, youthful voice. She was the victim of multiple mistakes (and cowardice) on Nightwish's part. I'm glad she's with The Dark Element now.
I did this same thing at the beginning of the year where I compared all three of them performing Ghost Love Score. I personally prefer Tarja, I like her voice so much more than the other two... but this caused a lot of controversy on my video and I got a LOT of aggressive messages because I didn't like Floor as much as everyone else did.
The most honest review! You said it all! I like Tarja's era, because those albums are pure gold in every sense. Even though Floor is amazing, on the last 3 albums, they lost the passion they had. Guess it goes by years.
That is a good point that Floor was able to cover for both Tarja and Annette, which I guess was essential going forward. She is definitely the most versatile. I am more drawn to Tarja because she does look like she was was plucked from the 1700s, giving me dark queen realness. I just like that darker tone.
I am a HUGE fan of Tarja always and forever. I can’t never get tired of Tarja! She’s the definition of a powerful symphonic metal front woman. As for Anette she has a beautiful soft voice and I enjoy her. Floor she has an amazing voice she’ great I’m not a big fan of Floors classical nowadays in Nightwish it sounds forced but if you listen to After Forever and ReVamp she sounds great there. Tarja will always be my favorite and I will follow her career. Love all
I knew of Nightwish for quite some time but was never truly into them when Tarja was with them, even though I always admitted she had such a clean-cut wonderful voice! Then along came Anette. When I saw the video Bye Bye Beautiful I wasn't sure how much I liked them or not! Fast forward to just a couple years ago, when I saw a Nightwish live at Wacken video with Floor Jansen and it was love at first site (hearing). She can literally do it all - she can belt, sing soft/delicate, loud/powerful, growl/scream and hold those difficult notes forever with LITTLE difficulty! But it was her stage presence which made me realize just how special she is to the metal world!
Floor is the only singer who gave me instant goosebumps all over my body. Every time I hear Nightwish. Perfect pitch, perfect range - nothing else to wish for. Tarja did this operatic stuff and made Nightwish unique. For my opinion it was a little too much vibrato in it. So I prefer Floor a lot. Anette... liked her snotty voice a lot, but never got warm with the missing range. Also too many mistakes hitting the notes. Sometimes my ear was not comfortable with her. So Floor is my all-time favorite and Tarja is second. Anette is third, maybe just because it seems not to be her voice genre.
I got into Nightwish with Tarja, and I loved them deeply because of what Tarja did. It stood out from the rest of metal, that all had the metal singers, belting and whatnot. Tarja didn't and I loved them for that. So, when the sound changed with Anette (good singer, obviously), I was done with them. Not liking where they were going as a band. Then Floor comes into play and got that old Nightwish sound back (kinda) but adding the rough metal sound that I loved the lack thereof.. So, in that way, for me Tarja is my favorite, just because of the Nightwish I used to know, without the rock edges on the singing. Don't get me wrong, I love Floor's singing, always have, I've known her for quite a while. My old band and hers (and many others), back in the 90s: we 'battled' in the Brabant (or Tilburg) music scene, lol. We come from the same area and era and I am truly proud of her, of what she has achieved.
Floor really is the most diverse. They really struck gold with her. She can sing so many different styles and she has a killer range. She really brings it all to life.
Absolutely agree! Many bands have a female lead singer that can hit those HIGH notes mixed with the lower notes, some can growl to hell & back, some can hold that note forever, some can belt and some can whisper... then there's Floor!
I think that Tarja developed her lower voice later. If you hear the low notes from her in "Supremacy" - they are gorgeous and very powerful. At this concert she is a little bit weaker with lower notes, but still - she was ill, so I think she did a wonderful job! It wasn't always perfect, but... no one is. :-) Love her voice, she's amazing.
Metal, like classical music, are works of contrasts and emotions. This makes them significant and they leave their mark on the history of music. The best works are created when composers step out of their comfort zone, as is the case with the two albums on which Anette sings. They are the absolute pinnacle of the band's work. They wouldn't have been composed this way if Marco's vocal partners were Tarja or Floor. Regardless of who was dressed how and what someone would say over a glass of beer, these two albums are the best musically because the contrast is maddening and the emotion is the main dominant element that shakes the listener. I'm a fan of the band and I have three albums in the car - the last one (regardless of who it is) + DPP and Imaginarium. If Tarya had stayed, the group would have been bored, if Tarya had been replaced with Floor, the group would have been spun into a maelstrom of sameness and lack of inspiration. That today they are the absolute leaders in this style is largely due to the total transformation that came with Anette.
Floor has brought tears to my eyes everyday since I first heard her about 9 months ago. Very often 3 surges of fullbody goosebumps during most performances. I´m still in disbelief what that woman has done to me. It makes me think she is the greatest ever, well atleast for me :)
Tarja and their old songs gave me more chills and made me want to jump out of my chair and headbang all the time. Floor brings more tears to my eyes with how emotional she can sing, and she's incredibly versatile making pretty much every song work for her. She also has very wide appeal even outside of the metal fandom. Both are equal to me. But I can understand liking Floor more, as Tarja's wasn't to everyone's tastes. And I might be biased since back then, while I had listened to metal before as it was played on the radio alongside the usual songs, Nightwish was the band that truly made me a metalhead. Also, since you started listening about 9 months ago, let me guess, because of "De Beste Zangers"? :P Fun fact, Floor is from my hometown (never met her though), and when I heard she was on that show it was the first and only time I ever watched it. Simply because she was on it. :P Though I've been a Nightwish fan for like 16~18 years now. (God damn I feel old now. xD)
I never got into Nightwish back in the day because Tarja's voice just didn't do it for me. She's a great singer for sure, and I understand the appeal, but it never gelled with my tastes. Something about her accents and the way she played with pronunciations as well as staying mostly in that high register. It wasn't until last year, when UA-cam just wouldn't stop putting Ghost Love Score in my recommends, that I discovered Floor, and that was a game changer. She breezes right through the operatic/theatrical stuff, as well as Annette's poppier style while bringing this dynamic rock/metal grit that really seems to bring a cohesion to their sound that I never got before. Tarja stays up in the stratosphere on recordings and seems to be, imo, separate from the band in live performances. I really like the albums with Annette, but she does not fit live, at all. Not only does Floor fit, she becomes a sort of lightning rod, taking the energy from the band and the crowd and exploding it back out in a way I've never really seen before. Months and months later I'm still absolutely blown away. Clearly, it's Floor for me. Also, Annette is SUPER cute, and I do really like her energy, even if it's a bit misplaced in this scenario.
My favorite is Tarja cause she has some kind of an special connection or chemistry with the audience and with the band members, specially in songs like Everdream, Walking in the Air, Wish I had an angel, Nemo, Siren, Over the Hills and far away, Bless the Child, Ghost Score and of course Phanthom of the Opera. Just analyze Walking in the Air and you could notice how people feel like that, as if you were somekind of floating in the air. Definitely, Tarja.
I absolutely love that dark warm voice of Tarja. but Floor can sing everything, she's probably 1 of the best singers alive that i know about, that last bit on poem and the pendulum brought me to tears and so did the beginning bit of the greatest show on earth.
Nightwish grew into Floor, they fit her well. And she came out as the full butterfly with them. The stars were just right aligned for this to come together. Everything preceding it had to happen to reach this conclusion.
Floor is in my opinion, one of the most versatile singers in the business, not just the symphonic rock genre. I really liked Tarja and was gutted when she left and as it is all about the live experience for me, I basically skipped Annette and then there was Floor............. Again just my opinion but I think she made Nightwish's live performances significantly better and I love OG Nightwish. The 1st time I watched that Wacken open-air concert I was totally blown away. My goosebumps seemed to be multiplying at an alarming rate as the concert progressed. Probably one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Tarja was the special voice and skill they needed to stand out in the crowd of cool metal bands. Anette and Floor are both extremely skilled and deserve all the recognition for their work but they just don't have the "special thing" anymore. Still some great music but when Tarja left I feel they lost some of the magic..but I have to agree Floor does fill those shoes pretty darn well :)
It was the contrast of heavy music and true trained opera singer, which not many bands have. I too prefer Tarja for that. Floor is good singing all stuff , but there is that difference in training.
Floor had opera training. I watched dozens of reaction videos to Floor by vocal coaches and opera singers. They are all blown away by her vocal abilities, breath control and say she does things with her voice they didn't even know are possible. Some great singers can sing opera and rock, metal, and pop. But they cannot alternate between that in a sentence like Floor can. And she makes it sound like she didn't need training for it. Not my words, but from professionals. I also saw a professional analysis of the End of an era live version of Phantom. The vocal coach said that Tarja is only well trained in exactly what she is famous for. The opera sound. Everything else is mediocre to weak. Another expert, an opera singer and teacher, explained that Tarja's pronunciation (accent) gets in the way of her singing sometimes. She is apparently not trained to use pronunciation to help with singing techniques. Where most professionals will mention at one point that Floor uses pronunciation in her singing technique. So yeah, there is a difference in training. Floor is to Tarja what van Gogh is to a professional house painter. And she is also very good at painting houses.
@@Valkaria the other person was talking about what they felt listening to Tarja, not about voices and the apparently superhuman things Floor does in your ears. you dont have to try to prove someone wrong to get a point across.
Floor Jansen all day long. The best English pronunciation and a Swiss Army Knife voice that handles anything Tuomas and the legacy songs can throw at her. Plus her presence gave the band peace from all the drama of the past.
I remember hearing Floor in her first band, After Forever, back in the late 90's. It was clear, even then, that she was going places and she is an absolute beast today. I know very little of actual song and some of the terms you speak of are just Greek to me, but I know what I like and Floors voice sound very complete to my ears, the way she blends various ways of singing from operatic to near growling. Excellent video Ken and I agree with you: Floor is the woman👍
Floor. I loved Tarjas voice when i was a nightwish fan. I didn't listen to nightwish for 10 years until i showed my 5 year old what bands i liked and the first Nightwish video was from 2013 live at wacken open air. I was blown away! I am a big fan of Marko Hietala. He truly completes Floor with his amazing voice. Too bad he quit.
Beautiful analysis of vocalists Ken! For me their best album is "Wishmaster", and I had the privilege of watching them live in 2003, unforgettable. My vote is Tarja, always. PS: There will be analysis video for "Stranger" and "Ave Maria", DIMASH is evolving even more, he really isn't from this planet!
I love all of them! Tarja was the first and hearing her sing in NW it brings back good memories! I really love Anette, too. Saw her live with NW back in the days and she rocked. Yes, she's not Tarja or Floor, but she knows this. Check her new stuff with The dark element out. She released her new Solo Album Strong yesterday and it's awesome! And Floor is Floor - no need to say more! She can sing everything! I think it's great that everyone can choose a favourite song of NW with one's favourite singer in it! Kind of a luxury problem 😉
Tarja was my favourite female singers for years. I got into Nightwish in 1999, I never thought anyone could 'replace' Tarja. Until I saw Floor live with Nightwish. Incredible. Annette I never liked, I saw her with Nightwish twice and both times I had to leave early.
I was waiting for this one…. And it’s my most conflicted…. When I think of Nightwish I immediately think of Tarja, probably because the Century Child and Once albums were my entry point to the band… I love both of those albums but not the earlier titles with Tarja. However the two Annette albums I love… best two albums the band did for me and Dark Passion Play is one of my most favourite albums of all time. However Annette wasn’t as good live, especially the Tarja material. Floor is the best live and can sing all material and make it her own… however the two studio albums she sings on I don’t like (although this is no criticism of her). Gun to my head If I could only choose one of the singers it would really be difficult…. Floor for the live material but Annette for those studio albums….
You're old fan so I guess you know who writes the songs in NW, right? Tuomas was in fire then and Dark Passion Play was almost done when Anette joined. That's my reason I don't give so much to her. But can't deny she sounds good in studio although I like Floor's versions of almost all these songs with small exceptions. But this doesn't matter .. still I am a bit biased. What upset me is too much crediting of Anette for these albums instead of Tuomas even as I said already the first one was written before.. Cheers!
Tarja, Anette and Floor are all extremely talented and fantastic singers. Floor is absolute perfection though, she does it all and she makes it seem so easy and fun!
Tarja was one of my favorite singers and I thought no one could top her in Nightwish, Anette showed me I was right, then Floor proved me wrong.
Best comment I actually stopped listening to them with Anette and forgot about them came back for Floor and lost my mind. The chills she gives when she sings O.O
Lol I started reading and thought you were gonna say Annette proved me wrong 🤣 I like her in other bands, she just didn't fit for Nightwish
+1!
Exactly that!
I think I had a CD and possibly a random tape that a dude a tower? or something shoved in my hand waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when.
yeah she was like literally an opera singer and probably the best live I liked the pop vibe anette gave floor is like both
Cannot agree more Ken.
Agree, I've seen Floor live with After Forever, ReVamp, NW and her Dutch solo-tour..... and Floor live is better than studio recording.
Nightwish always will be live band...Studio recordings are great with all 3 singers but live is different side.
Hell yeah! Dark Chest of Wonders, Wacken '13 is just amazing. I listen to it more than the studio version.
@@L.T.L.T.L.T. She's awesome with Star One!
I am Floor all the way, though I got hooked on Nightwish with Tarja. Floor gives me chills.
Tarja for me!! Those dark operatic vocals are my thing. But I love that Floor is the current singer of Nightwish ❤️
Tarja checks some boxes. Annette checks some boxes. Floor checks all the boxes. 🙌💯
👏👏👏
Floor checks boxes.
Floor destroys said boxes.
Floor makes the new boxes...that no one else can check
Floor Jansen...hands down...the best
No. Tarja is still far better.
Not even close to Tarja!
I agree. With Floor I feel so much emotion. She brings tears to my eyes .
Lol. Tarjas rendition of Phantom of the opera blows Floor off the stage.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 Indeed. Yet Phantom of the Opera is just one song. The point is Floor OVERALL is the better singer Nightwish ever had.
I shudder to think how incredible the song that tops "the greatest show on earth" will be. But i don't think its possible
Tarja is highly influential and i do agree that she brought a different dimension to the overall Nightwish sound.
I love all 3 singers, they are awesome. My favorite is floor. Floor is the best female singer I've ever heard.
I love the energy Floor brings to nightwish she’s fantastic.
So good!
Ken I agree with you, Floor is incredible! really metal, really symphonic, with also pop deviations, perfect pitch, lot of power but sweetness at the same time, she is an awesome singer!
Floor is dutch and absolute my favorite singer . She makes me cry of happiness
I texted a link to this video to my daughter. She rarely comments, but if she does, look out !!! Lol. She's been a big Nightwish fan for years.
Finally someone that really has an opinion and is not afraid of telling us!
And Im really digging your analysis. Just an excellent video. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed!
Floor all day every day for me, but I respect what the other 2 did for the band. The band wouldn't be there for Floor to be in if it weren't for Tarja and Anette.
Floor 100%!!! Amazing presence on stage with a killer voice!!!
I like Floor Jansen the best here because I like her compression voice as well as her operatic and I also appreciate her tonality and dynamics. She's very interesting even tho she doesn't move much.
if you watch some of nightwish other stuff she moves ALLOT.
Lol have you seen her windmilling? Check out Storytime Live at Wacken!
Or her dancing on ‘I want my tears back’ in Buenos Aires.
It would be silly to move around like crazy in a song like ‘Ghost love score’.
Exactly exactly exactly

Lol. Floor is absolutely generic in every way.
Tarja destroyed her and so does Tatiana from Jinjer.

@@Arend010 Exactly.
Ken I’ve never heard one note played by this band I have heard however that the songstresses are above average
That being said I will tune in and listen just as sight unseen is a phrase we use I will add voice unheard and say Gabriela g is the right fit Kayla reeves also a prime candidate I tend too gravitate toward the ken tamplin method and motto how to sing BETTER than anyone else

For me the three personify the facets of a woman
Tarja is the ethereal kind of angelic side
Anette is the woman, seductive somehow vulnerable, yet with a lot of personality
and Floor is the warrior, a force of nature, powerful yet gentle.
@@davidstephen6753 Best thing about Floor and Tarja. They are friends IRL.
Nightwish, as a whole, benefitted enormously from the skilful compositions throughout of Tuomas and the professional, musical talents of each of the band members and everything combined has made them what they are today.
floor because she can sing so many different styles .
All of them did it greatly. But Floor OMG!
Tarja laid the foundation of the soprano led symphonic metal and then Anette filled in with the pop elements but the brilliance of adding Floor is that not only can she handle the back catalogue of both Tarja and Anette, on top of that Floor is also a full-fledged metal singer which means she is a more perfect fit for Nightwish than almost anyone else could have been.
she cant, not at tarjas level...
And if your sick, Annette is the singer to look after you, beat that!!
Tarja was awesome! But Floor, overall...hands down.
No.
Tarja destroys floor.
Tarja still beats Floor easily.
Floor will always just be the replacement.
Awesome!
@@kentamplin You have a great thing going on with this channel man! Honest, non-biased, and fun!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
I agree.
She can sing a ristorante menu and it will sound awesome.
Whaaaat? You mean Marko hasn't been singing on Planet Hell like he used to? I mean his voice on that song was amazing, why is only Floor singing it? It was supposed to be both male and female vocals and it rocked!!
Is there a version of that online? I couldn't find it .
@@k.b.6844 Marko left the band and Floor took over his parts in Planet Hell. In other songs Troy was given more significance.
Have to agree, I dont think Tarja or Floor could have done Meadows Of Heaven or Turn Loose The Mermaids as good as Annette
Ghost Love Score sung by Floor = Goosebumps EVERY TIME!
Floor is my fave and objectively speaking is the best. She has great falsettos, great belts, her intonation is great, and great stage presence. Loved her in After Forever too.
So happy you did this one Ken! I love Tarja…but, like you state, Floor is the perfect blend of Tarja and Anette!!! Great review man!!!
Floor... Floor... oh boy oh boy, chills every time
My favorite is Floor, but she is Dutch just like me :-p What surprised me most was your belcanto voice, Ken! Wow! Off the charts. Didn't know that side of you :-D I only heard snippets. Not like in this video
Wow, thank you!
What he said...
Profound, and so on point. I would like this 100 times if I could.
This
Dude, you are pulling off a Floor Jansen yourself with that high note at the end here, I`m impressed!. I like all four singers of Nightwish, Let us not forget Marco!!, he supported these ladies like no one could have with his voice. Marco on his own is an amazing singer, and great front man. Tarja is the sound of Nightwish, and will always be their Queen. Anette has her unique style too. Floor is off the hook as vocalist and front woman, Nightwish is lucky to have her.
i love tarja and floor ALOT but for me nightwish's best singer is/was Marko
Floor Jansen is the complete package, she has the stage presence, the empathy, the crowd control and not least an amazing voice.. Floor is the right fit for Nightwish !
All are great, Floor is my favourite... but still the 2 best Nightwish albums are the ones with Anette on vocals.
I like how even tho it wasnt your intention, we also see how impressive Marco is :D always love when he kicks in
You're right, Marco was the other impressive member of Nightwish. let us wish him all the best and let´s hope that he comes back in one or the other way to music soon!
For me Annette and Nightwish never fitted together.
I love Tarja but Floor is a goddess! She gives me goosebumps whenever I hear her incredible voice! And her stage presence is absolutely gorgeous.
Cmon Ken!!! It’s not even close!!! FLOOR IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL!!! You’re absolutely right
Tarja and Floor got the goosebomps factor, like you say, for me, really both made me cry.
Floor ROCKS!!!!!
Floor for me from songs like Shallow to Romanticide to Shoemaker to Frozen to Phantom of the Opera the lady can do it all.
Floor for sure! Great voice, charisma and interpretation. She is a monster on live performances. 😎
Angels Fall First and especially Ocean Born are my favorite Nightwish albums, and Tarja was such a crucial part of my favorite era of Nightwish.
Floor can do it all!!!!! Floor all the way! They are all phenomenal singers!!! But I just love Floor the most!
My favorite is Tarja ever since I listened to “Wishmaster” album back in the day! Great series Ken, love your “soprano” voice!🤟🔥🎸
Floor is an outstanding singer, one out of a million! Good that she joined the band.
Nightwish died when they fired Tarja. Now it is floor featuring Nightwish
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the wonderful videos =)
You always seem to cheer me up. Helped me through many dark hours.
@@darkreijo Thank you, Reijo. I appreciate that! God bless you.
Cheers!
Floor is a metal goddess. She's the best.
Lol. No.
Tarja and Tatiana from Jinjer slay Floor
I've been living under a rock and only discovered Nightwish last year so my vote is definitely for Floor!
I have been listening Nightwish since I was a child, love Tarja. BUT Floor is an angel!
I absolutely love Floor. She gives me major chills and brings me to tears whenever I hear her singing.
Tarja defined Nightwish a a powerhouse never the been the same since .
Wow. "The" Two Empresses in the Realm of the Metal. Your Highness, Lady Tarja Turunen AND Your Highness, Lady Floor Jansen
Tarja, Anette and Floor are all extremely talented and fantastic singers. Floor is absolute perfection though, she does it all and she makes it seem so easy and fun!
