Bon came across more authentic because he was singing in his natural voice. He didn't have to push himself to get a "rock and roll voice", it was just there, seemingly without effort. He also had a swagger and charm that was unequalled. He made Mick Jagger look like an introvert, if such a thing is possible.

I saw Axl/DC in 2016 or thereabouts. I thought his singing was more than good enough and what he did do was stay out of the way. He sang and let the band carry the show which as an AC/DC fan I really appreciated. I wasn’t there to see Axl. As a performer he seemed to get that

The one really cool thing about this band is they’ve never relied on an image, hype or being pretty… They get so much respect just because of the pure soul of the music… I could just listen to Philip Rudd and Cliff Williams play rhythm tracks all day… And I miss Malcolm Young quite dearly.

Although the point and intention of this series is about replacement singer comparisons, there is a whole extra dynamic beyond the vocals when throwing in Axl's contribution. Axl said in an interview that he wasn't so sure that AC/DC would even want him, but almost felt a calling to help AC/DC out of the real crisis that they were in, if they weren't going to be able to finish the full tour commitment. The word was that it could have cost them about $20 million and caused irreparable damage to the band's relationships with the record company, promoters, etc. It was an extreme crisis for the band. Meanwhile, GnR was newly, finally, reunited, and had also just started out with new commitments themselves and about to start their Not in This Lifetime tour. Fortunately, the rest of GnR were supportive of what Axl wanted to do for AC/DC. But then to add on top of that, Axl breaks his foot in GnR's first reunion show. So now, Axl successfully manages to juggles both the AC/DC and GnR show commitments, despite having to do it with a broken leg, yet was on time for every show, ready to go and giving his best effort, almost humbly. Angus had spoken out that Axl was actually very professional, respectful, always on time and prepared for the shows. **That's a Whole Lotta Good Job Put Together!!** Axl has also obviously grown a lot since those early days, and is much more professional in GnR since the reunion and beyond, as well. He works very hard to do his best, and deserves so much more recognition, and much less focusing on the diminishing vocals and weight issues. He's so much more than than any of that. He's incredibly talented, rather a musical genius, very intelligent, actually a nice, funny guy, and too often misunderstood. Having an extremely horrible childhood, then adding the probable bipolar issues would mess with anyone, but imagine having the repercussions of having it highlighted constantly to the international masses, as part of the cost of fame. Yeah, he really deserves a break from the flack, and validation and credit where it's really due.

5 years ago today we crossed the pond for the final Ac/Dc gig in Philadelphia . Axl Rose was on lead vocals. - he was amazing and absolutely spot on! Ac/Dc songs suited him so well and he had the vocal range to sing both Bon and Brian’s songs effortlessly whereas I feel Brian’s voice doesn’t naturally suit the classic Bon songs . . Love Axl/GnR and love Ac /Dc and so it was the perfect combo for me and one of my favourite concerts ever!

The only thing I did not approve of Axl Rose being in AC/DC is because of his lack of professionalism. I knew he had the potential to do a good show because his vocal range and style is very similar to the sound of the band. But because AC/DC is a very professional minded band I feared that Axl was going to screw it up because of his antics. Stopping songs to call out members of the audience, showing up hours late before the designated time of the concert or not even showing up at all.

Great video! I have to disagree with your initial assessment though - Bon Scott wasn't ducking notes and actually went higher than the studio version on the 'AAAAAAAAAALL!'. I've always found that Bon manages these sounds effortlessly, while Brian pinches and strains too much. He tenses his neck so much that his chin ends up resting on it, especially in more recent years.

I’ll go out on a controversial limb and suggest Bon didn’t not have the vocal power to rock the stadiums like Brian has so successfully done for 40 years since.
I also prefer Brian’s sound but admit that could be because when I was getting into music Brian was in the driver’s seat.
I think Bon’s bigger recording sound was more driven by studio techniques than Brian’s has been. Not that Brian wasn’t helped in the studio but he seems better able to replicate the records live.

@@davidgeisler9885 ..I think that may be partly why I much prefer Brian myself..I just discovered AC/DC when Back In Black came out..so it was Brian from the get-go on AC/DC for me..I remember back then, hearing some of their earlier work, and thinking:"something sounds odd about the vocals on those songs" to myself..I didn't even realize it was a different singer at first..similar enough for me to assume it was the same guy, but different enough for me to realize something was "off" or "different"..and even though I liked some of the songs, I must be honest and say I didn't like the sound of Bon's voice as much..later, I was discussing this with some guys, and they then told me:"oh, no..that's not Brian..that's Bon Scott..the original singer..he tragically passed away and Brian took his place"..then, I saw some pictures and a couple video clips of Bon singing with AC/DC..and I remember thinking he looked a bit odd/out of place with them, I think Brian's look fits in more with Angus and the other guys as well..not dissing Bon at all..he was the first with AC/DC, and nothing can take that away from him..although, Brian has been with them for a MUCH, MUCH longer time..now, had I known about/been an AC/DC fan from the very beginning, my opinion may have been very different..who knows..but, a person's personal place when being really into a band or singer, or any music in general, has much influence on his/her personal opinions and feelings about said band/singers/music....

One of my favorite clips of AC/DC is one of the early promo videos of a very young AC/DC band on a float going down a city street in Australia performing It's a Long way to the Top with Bon and the bagpipes.
That video set the stage for what I expected from AC/DC from that point on, rocking and having fun and enjoying what they were doing.
Axle made his Hay in the early days with the original GNR lineup. I saw them live in a fairly small indoor arena and his vocals were so very powerful. That was the time frame axle really was one of the best, but to me that was where he should remain!

@billwiley.... very interesting. IALWTTT was prob my intro to Acdc. Loved that song. I am actually wondering if they ever sang that song live on tour, even in the early days, and if there is even any audio bootlegs proving it. I have a few myself so must check that out. Perhaps the inclusion of the bagpipes was a reason for it not being a staple song. One things for sure, Brian would struggle delivering that song with kudos the way Bon did. Bons delivery was effortless and his raising the volume to his vocals without a struggle is why Bon will always be regarded as the ultimate ACDC singer

  • @benking1429
    @benking1429 2 роки тому +8

Acdc are my favourite band of all time. I own every album, a stupid amount of memorabilia and have them tattooed on me. Bon Scott is lyrically leagues above Brian, he's a street poet, he's been around the block a million times. He's easier to imitate with his nasal tone, but unique in his front man presence, rivals Freddie Mercury but in a completely different way. He's one of my heroes, but the other hero of mine, Brian Johnson, has an insane range (look at House of the rising sun covered in his Geordie days). The vocal ability and range of Brian Johnson is vastly underestimated, he's able to transcend the limits of blues rock. The power of Brian is absolutely insane, I often find he gets ridiculed (when I go to see tribute acts) despite his unrivalled ability. There seems to be Bon Scott purists in the acdc community and it's very disappointing, because Brian took them to a completely different level, his actual singing is superior to Bons in my opinion. Whether you like the albums after back in black or not, there's no denying it's their best effort, it sent them into the stratosphere. If you're a true acdc fan, you have to take them hand in hand. They're just as perfect as each other, but somehow match each other in their importance and brilliance for the band. If the general Malcolm had Brian in the band for longer than Bon was alive, then there's a reason for it, because he was a true perfectionist. Fucking love em, appreciate them both 🤘

I just think that Axl was a perfect fit for the vocal style and I don't hear much difference between. Other than Axl's voice is Axl's voice. I just feel it was the right fit as GnR was a very similar kind of rock band to begin with.

As a singer Brian is my favorite by a slight margin. The way his voice has changed over the years is very fascinating to me. Some say he just screams, but just compare him to anyone trying to imitate him in an AC/DC cover band. They lack the soul and bluesiness that's the basis of his high, distorted notes. Like this video shows, Brian is not really screaming even if it sounds powerful. He sings without ego or macho and is able to deliver even the worst AC/DC lyrics with soul. You just gotta love the guy. His enthousiasm compensates somewhat for his lack of lyrics. I don't even know how much he actually wrote; a lot of the lyrics since Back in Black seem to be from Angus. But Brian's dedication goes together with Angus' sober attitude, which is "we keep rocking no matter what", which is why Back in Black was such a monster album and why Brian has been in the band ever since.
Bon was by far the greatest lyricst of course. His songs were fueled by pain and loneliness but they were also fun, being the template for later songs although they rarely got close. He gave AC/DC a darker edge that made the band deeper, which went well with the raw 70s production. His vocals and lyrics were uncompromised and honest.
Axl is one of my favorite singers and frontmen but AC/DC doesn't cover his range, even if the man himself loves the band. Bon's material suited him better than Brian's, on which he went all out with distortion, which sounded way too angry compared to Brian's soul, but he did impress me with hitting all the high notes. Damn did he shred his voice during those AC/DC gigs. He probably wouldn't be able to do it again. But he was there when AC/DC needed it, giving the band fresh energy during a rough period. It was definitely a legendary crossover.

The main difference between Brian and Bon is of course that Brian is a better singer technically. Don't get me wrong, Bon could belt with the best of them, but his strength lay in the intimacy of his voice. When Bon sang it was like he sat just opposite of you and told you a story and he could make the fans feel that whether they were 200 or 20000. Brian brought, as you say, more muscle to the band and raised the bar, almost making the band more disciplined in his quest to not be the next Bon, but rather make his bones as his own man. He's done a wonderful job of it I'd say. Axl, being a huge fan of AC/DC, made a great impression as lead singer as Brian was forced to step back, but he does feel a tad light next to a behemoth such as Brian. Cool video man👍.

Here we have 2 great singers and front men in Bon and Brian in my opinion I feel that if Bon was still around I could still see this band still being on top now as for Axle well he could fill in so many bands and pull it off no doubt but I think it would be hard to replace him in G&R

Strangely as a kid I had no idea AC/DC had different singers because to me they sounded alike... but now as an adult they sound totally different. Both very talented obviously, but have two different styles. As for Axl, again, it would be completely dull to ignore how talented he is as well but still his own distinctive sound and style to it that still fit well.

I think that "blues bar singer" sound of Bon is not a coincidence since a lot of the early songs had a lot of blues elements or where actually blues. He just sounded cool and nasty but with that "I know what I'm doing!" attitude. Pure rock'n'roll. With Brian ACDC got a cleaner sound which I think is not bad at all. When Axl stepped in I was really surprised when I heard a recording of him singing Highway to Hell. No matter who you are, it needs a lot of guts singing THE rock song of the century as a replacement. And he pulled it off like his life was depending on it. By the way I recommend to watch the performance from 1989 MTV Awards when he sang Free Fallin together with Tom Petty. It felt like Axl killed Toms confidence in his voice that night. :D
