The reason I like Floor so much is she isn't just a great singer, she is a vocal artist....she doesn't do just one tone or type, she adjusts to feeling and mixes so well. AND her breath control is amazing. If you like just opera then go for Tarja. If you like artistry and mixes, then Floor.
Yes, the orchestral stuff is on backing tracks, including choir voices, those are not Floor though. They are pre recorded by the London Philharmonic orchestra ( the ones who also did LOTR movie trilogy) arranged by Pip WIlliams based on NW composer/keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen transcriptions. Because of logistical and money reasons they cant bring an entire orchestra with them on world tours, so they rely on these compositions recorded as backing tracks. None of it is meanto to hide or mask anything. regarding the lead vocalist either.
@@daliden That's true, Tarja used to do some of that parts, but with Anette they chose to use the pre recorded by Tarja since Anette couldn't sing those parts. But with Floor who can sing anything, that's not a problem anymore so she can do that too, and they don't need to use Tarja's voice anymore.
I love your analysis. It helps me to understand what i am hearing. I love. I appreciate the performances of the artist even more. thank you. I love Tarja and Floor. Can't help, but Floor is my goddess of music.
It IS a symphonyheavymetal band, they have big orchestra and choir backing tracks, otherwise they should have to have an orchestra and a choir at the stage....
Floor also performed Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort at Beste Zangers. I like Floor's performance of Ghost Love Score best, not only because of the epic finish Floor added in the last belt. But I also love Tarja. Glad I have CDs of both, so I can listen to Tarja singing Nemo, Floor singing Ghost Love Score, etc.
Finally a coach who can analyze voices of these goddesses perfectly, and who can break the voice barrier between male and female while perform. Great job sir!
I think you should do a Tarja solo career reaction cause she developed very strong chest voice after she got kicked off from Nightwish. Tarja - Supremacy (Hellfest)
are you kidding me Tarja's chest voice gives me shivers because of how bad it is, it makes me wanna cry.... I saw her live two years ago. I honestly felt scammed. She should stay in her lyrical singing style. I also saw her live in 2012 and she was much better!!!
Excellent analysis and breakdown Ken. One really appreciates the vast wealth of knowledge and ability you possess, and share with your subscribers. Keep the great reactions/breakdowns coming. They're both two amazing artistes in their own right. I'd give versatility to Floor. She's, in my opinion, better suited to the evolved sound nightwish now has, and an amazing performer as well. Tarja's era was darker, she's the voice that pioneered their sound, and will remain my preferred frontwoman.
Awesome reaction, I love that you take the comments of the previous post and take it into this one. And great breakdown of these two lovely ladies voices!!
Nicely done Ken! As a musician who’s 59, it’s exciting to realize I’ve never tapped my vocal capability. Just finally getting some training. Thought I was too “old”. Guess not. Amazing to hear the change. Blessings brother!
Great Vid Mr. Tamplin, amazing how you can reach Floor's and Tarja's notes. They both are great singers because they both have their different vocal styles.

How do you hit those notes, Ken?????? Ok, lots of practice, for sure, but, there must be a lot of innate in your skills too, right?. BTW, I'm really digging your course. Keep up with the awesome work!
I'm in the tenor range but have always sang along with female voices. Nightwish is an extraordinary group that has had 3 lead vocalists in their history and two are among the best vocalists working today. Few bands could claim both Tarja and Floor. The trouble with comparing Tarja & Floor (and occasionally Annette) is that you're essentially comparing apples and oranges (and bananas). Tarja is a fully classically trained lyric soprano. That's what she does and that's whyTuomas wrote the songs of her tenure in the band, the way he did, to accomodate her style of singing. The best person to sing THOSE songs is Tarja. Floor on the other hand, whilst she's had a high level of vocal training, has chosen to sing in more varied styles, mainly in the rock/metal genre, it's what's defined the timbre of her voice. The album Endless Forms Most Beautiful is written to reflect Floors voice and if Tarja was to sing any of the songs, they would sound very different, much the same as when Floor sings anything pre Dark Passion Play. My OPINION, and it is only MY opinion, is that Tarja is the technically more gifted singer BUT Floor is the better singer because of her adaptability and ability to cope with the technical requirements of the early music and the emotional requirements of the later song writing. I'm not sure that Tarja could have expressed the emotion of The Poet and the Pendulum in the same way that Floor can, mind you if Tarja had still been in the band we wouldn't have that song... I'm not mentioning Annette in this comparison because as good a singer as she was in the studio, live... I don't think her voice was strong enough to do justice to the music, even the stuff written primarily for her. You can't really say who was definitively the best Nightwish singer, it can't be done. You can only say which one you prefer... As I did 2 paragraphs above.
Not just Floor and Tarja, but Anette too. It would be simpler if there had been only one lead vocalist. But I guess then it would be hate against singers in other bands. Some people just think the best way to promotte their darling is to attack another person. There's some rabid fanbois that go in multiple comment threads to spread the poison.
For me I have always loved Tarja more, but Floor is awesome & sometimes it's an unfair comparison as the both bring something different. Seen them twice with Floor and boy does She deliver 🤘
Tarja will always be my first choice but thank god floor took over for Annette! God Annette live was like listening to nails on a chalk board and a screeching cat at the same time
Nightwish is very open about having background choir and orchestral parts being pre-recorded, since even though they could these days afford to move with an orchestra like some bands do these days, they never saw the value being worth the effort and costs
Floor is very "restrained" and timid with Nightwish. She used to be way more theatrical, intense and dare I say operetic with her former band, After Forever
For the style Tuomas is writing in now, she doesn't seem to have to use her "powerful" vocals as much. According to Tarja(wikipedia:fact or fiction video where they butcher her name) when Nightwish first started, Tuomas's intention for the band was to be more alternative and had to change the entire style of the band when they heard her sing because her voice "was too powerful". I'm guessing now that the band has a vocalist that can sing both styles that he's trying to get back to where he wanted to go originally. The last album was so different from the others, and his and Troy's band AURI seemed to have been going in the same direction(naturally, Johanna's vocal style is much different and so much softer). Just my take on it ;)
Phantom of The Opera sounds theatrical for a reason. It's a musical written by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. He wrote it for his then partner classical crossover artist Sarah Brightman who originally portrayed the female role. The original role of the phantom was performed by the incredible Michael Crawford.
Thank you Ken! These ladies are both powerful singers, just a little different toolbox. For me, it comes down to the songs and performances. I can imagine it's a challenge for composer too, to use singer's toolbox in the best possible way in songwriting.
I guess Floor is a bridge between Tarja and Annette, being neither as operatic as the former nor as pop as the latter. She has the most accessible and non polarising sound of the three, which is why her joining Nightwish revived interest in the band. That said, my favourite thing ever of the band is still their cover of High Hopes and especially Marco's singing there.
I disagree. Floor is fully capable of singing full opera, and also full contemporary. On top of that she can also do several levels of distortion. There simply no weak spot on her singing abilities.
I agree... different styles, but both have great voice. And thanks for showing everything. :D I also like the "roughness" of Marco's voice. By the way, do you know Northern Kings? I really like to hear different voices together.
It's interesting you talk about her ability to belt, because when she joined the band, many Nightwish fans said she couldn't do anything BUT belt. I made a comment about it on the other video, but I think it's funny because she comes from a background of rock/metal moreso than an operatic one. I don't know if you were aware of that, but of the 3 Nightwish singers, Tarja is the most classically trained one and Floor is the "rockstar".
She has a lot of stage presence and she really embodies the songs. I like more Floor's technique in some songs and I love the three singers Nightwish has had, but I must say them with Tarja was pure magick.
Hey King! You are always so humble and educative, and with each video you are growing bigger and bigger for this community. I guess you may do a Coach Reaction for Eric Adams of Manowar, who is also a Old school killer. Cheers!
You should hear their "Ave Maria" cover together...he has one with Floor and one with Tarja, both are just beautiful. I agree though, Marco makes "Phantom of the Opera" what it is...amazing!
he also has a band he's been in since the 80s with his brother called Tarot and has "project groups" like Northern Kings as well as guest vocals for so many bands.
Floor and tarja both killer voices. Me in my opinion i like floor better but tarja is amazing as well. This is just my opinion. Thank you for redeeming yourself with the "floorgasm" the "moneynote" if you will that floor does at the end of the song. That made me extremly happy. Love your channel. Keep up all the good work. And you have a killer voice as well my friend. I belt out those high notes just like you do and people are blown away cuz I'm a tiny girl and people joke and say dang how does that come out of a tiny girl like you then they follow it up by saying damn that's amazing especially since back then i was smoking 2 packs of menthols a day even i didn't know how i was doing it lol have yourself a wonderful day and rock on!
Dear Ken Tramplin, There's a German band by the name AnnenMayKantereit and their lead singer HENNING MAY is an absolute power house. I hope you take some time and check them out. Even though they sing in German (beautiful language), I think you would definitely dig Henning's voice! Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks Anand Roy
To me Tarja is great operatic singer but very one dimensional, world class at that though while Floor packs much more power and versatility, Floor for me is actually the best female vocalist I've ever heard in my life.
Love the opera and prog rock, I can hear clearly what you are saying about the opera style of singing coming through in Floor and Tarja's performances. It is a very obvious sound to my ear, and it is a more rigid or classically trained way of singing. For the music that Nightwish perform, it works beautifully though. I have heard some opera singers attempt modern pop music and it can sound dreadful, because it is way too pure. Nightwish are though for me a superb band no matter who the singer is. Love these reactions, learning a lot. Thanks.
Now react to Yannis Papadopoulos: ''Ghost Love Score'' (Cover):::Anything by Yannis please...He is the greatest singer of all time (Yes I dare to say it without a doubt). He's been really acknowledged by the band Crimson Glory themselves and asked if he would be interested in joining the band after covering one their song titled ''Masque of The Red Death''---Awesome range---really TALENTED...sends shiver down my spine...He is also a member of the early formed awesome band ''Beast in Black''...You should definitely check him out... Good luck :)
Actually, I believe Tarja has performed Phantom of the Opera with Fabio Lione in some of her solo concerts. So, you might be able to find clips of that on youtube. It'll probably be fan recorded though. So, I don't how good the quality may be.
More Nightwish videos please 😍 it's my favourite band. They inspired me to sing when I was 16 and if it wasn't for them many things would be so different for me... these videos are very educational and fun when you do the notes haha, you do seem to enjoy watching the performances and that's nice :) Btw yeah, Storytime rocks 😂 it's a very fun song as well. The album - Imaginaerum - does make you travel with your mind.
I've listen to both versions, Floor did it around 2009 I think and she went totally flat at the high note and her recent rendition was barely a little bit better, and Tarja tends to go a little sharp during her solo renditions lol, so I'll stick to Tarja's version with Nightwish or just listen to the actual play with Sierra Boggess portraying Christine.
Thanks Ken, much appreciated. And yes, they are using background tracks a lot, just about every song has the London symphony orchestra (someone corrwct me if I got the name wrong) there too and for some reason they don't want to tour with the band 😂. AND of course it'd cost a huge load of money too. Background tracks are great when they add something that couldn't be done reasonably otherwise, but when it get's to the point of lip syncing... not cool.
Little friendly note; the letter J in Finnish is always pronounced like the Y in "yarn", "yawn" and "yard". Most of us don't mind if people don't get it perfectly right though. We know it's not the easiest language ever. :)
It's same in many other languages and probably in all Slavic languages that "J" sounds like "Y". Not 100% same, but it's far from English or French "J".
There is a video where sound engineers and roadies show/explain their setup. Basically they of course need to have effects/orchestral parts/choir background vocals due to the type of music they make but for large events/venues they indeed have a real background orchestra and singers (I guess it's too expensive to use them live every time). As for singers; I was a die hard Tarja fan for years (even with all of her not so great "features" when not on stage) but hearing them both live in close time frame I have to say that Floor just has more beautiful voice color (to me at least) and is for sure more connected to the audience. I just wasn't ready when I heard her live for the first time. She's also a true metalhead and does a proper death metal growls on some songs. For me she's the best fit for the band. Anette, while I like her a bit less, had an honor to sing on two outstanding albums and was a great fit for those. Kudos to "metal Mozart" Tuomas as well for composing all this. And kudos to you Ken for always being so positive and responding with respect even when people post with zero culture xD P.S. Marko is/was the only singer for Nightwish :P

You can't really say who was definitively the best Nightwish singer, it can't be done. You can only say which one you prefer... As I did 2 paragraphs above.
Exactly 100 % agree
Nah,i think Floor is even more technical sufficiant than Tarja.
Dude, this was sooo awesome being a fan of both ladies.. i'm now a fan of you.. awesome job!..subbed!
Thanks LRD2V8!
Boy you're brave. I've never seen a more precious, irritable group of fans than the Floor/Tarja debaters.
Thanks for this, you're the real deal.
I think he can handle it but yeah into the rabbit hole he goes 😜
They are both beautiful singers and Annette
You're welcome, 216trixie!
TRUTH!
Great breakdown.. totally agree on Floors last passage, and thanks for coming back to this.. its appreciated!
Thanks Mike!
For me I have always loved Tarja more, but Floor is awesome & sometimes it's an unfair comparison as the both bring something different. Seen them twice with Floor and boy does She deliver 🤘
DAVE PUGH thanks for sharing your feedback!
Tarja will always be my first choice but thank god floor took over for Annette! God Annette live was like listening to nails on a chalk board and a screeching cat at the same time
@@JennJohnson9217 my first thought on Annette was - wtf, chimpmunks! sorry to say it, but that is what her voice reminded me of. XD
Ken, I just love watching you view a band that you Dig! Great review!
I am glad you enjoyed it, CMDphoto Rob Wiggs!
Nightwish is very open about having background choir and orchestral parts being pre-recorded, since even though they could these days afford to move with an orchestra like some bands do these days, they never saw the value being worth the effort and costs
Santtu Kahkonen thanks for sharing!
Thnx for your excellent reviews. ... still playing that "An axe to grind" album..love it! Greetz from the Netherlands.
Edwin van den Kieboom Awesome! Happy to hear that!
Ken I am a big Nightwish fan. Love Floor and Tarja. I am very impressed with your vocal skills and knowledge. Major kudos to you.
Thanks TheMuse!
Great reaction video Ken !!☺🤘
Thanks dan!
Floor is very "restrained" and timid with Nightwish. She used to be way more theatrical, intense and dare I say operetic with her former band, After Forever
Vinicius Ferrenberg that's really interesting I had no idea.
@@kentamplin or Revamp also a former band.
Just my take on it ;)
Yes! Someone else has finally noticed this! After forever had such strong powerful vocals and she seems to have toned way down to fit with nightwish
She is good but Pales in comparison to Tarja or Annette.
Awesome!!!
I really do like it!
I'm glad you like it!
Thanks for commenting, J Ryan!
Great video Ken! Thank you
Thanks Cyber Cript!
Please, react to "underneath", studio version. This is one of the most beautiful musics from Tarja Turunen. I never saw anyone reacting to this.
Thanks for the suggestion.
@@kentamplin It´s a pleasure. Your videos are great.
I am binge watching ur Channel, u are like Sam Johnson I cant stop watching!
Thanks Max & Sujy React!!!
Ken, the new vocalist of NightWish! 😜
jackaharts1 😎
Ken actually taught Tarja how to sing.
Will be called Kenwish :)
Floor Has a very good Mix Register wich helps her to be very vertisale musically
I disagree. Floor is fully capable of singing full opera, and also full contemporary. On top of that she can also do several levels of distortion. There simply no weak spot on her singing abilities.
i know Im pretty randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to stream new movies online ?
@@jacobwalsh1888 Indeed, there are videos of her singing opera when she was really young (didn't even had any tatoos)
hello Ken thqnk you so much for make this video !!! i'm really excited :D well i'm totally agree with you and i think that tarja has a dramatic style
I agree... different styles, but both have great voice. And thanks for showing everything. :D
I also like the "roughness" of Marco's voice.
By the way, do you know Northern Kings? I really like to hear different voices together.
Awesome Ken, thanks!
You're welcome Pekka! :)
Abree107 League of Legends thanks so much for sharing!
Ken you definitely ROCK bro! Awesome explanation!
Thank you, Let's Rock Your English!
I felt Tarjas singing so much more. I don't know if that can be taught.
Agreed it has so much character, strong yet gentle at the same time.
Don't agree, Floor sings with so much more emotions.
She has a lot of stage presence and she really embodies the songs. I like more Floor's technique in some songs and I love the three singers Nightwish has had, but I must say them with Tarja was pure magick.
@@ItsNotaTuhmah😅😅😅 is tarja do growling?dude tarja can do is only soprano.throgh classics Only so who's package voice 😂😂
Hey King! You are always so humble and educative, and with each video you are growing bigger and bigger for this community.
I guess you may do a Coach Reaction for Eric Adams of Manowar, who is also a Old school killer.
Cheers!
Thanks for the suggestion, Alp!
Can you make a reaction video about Marco Hieatala? He also sings in Nightwish sometimes :D
So happy you started with my favorite song by them! STORYTIMEEEE
Ravin Nightingale . Awesome!
Tarja 😍 Forever !!!!
Rock on!
I absolutely love Tarja, but Floor is something else! Love them both so much
Floor and tarja both killer voices.
Thanks for your kind comment, winchester girl!
Awesome man!
Thanks Miguel Angel!
Dear Ken Tramplin,
There's a German band by the name AnnenMayKantereit and their lead singer HENNING MAY is an absolute power house. I hope you take some time and check them out. Even though they sing in German (beautiful language), I think you would definitely dig Henning's voice! Would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks
Anand Roy
His voice is unique
Thanks for the suggestion, Anand!
Always❤️
T. Smith Thanks for the love!
Team Tarja. Love her.
😀
wow dude, you have a great voice. And I love them . Both great talented singers in there own way.
Thanks for listening, Michael!
To me Tarja is great operatic singer but very one dimensional, world class at that though while Floor packs much more power and versatility, Floor for me is actually the best female vocalist I've ever heard in my life.
Rock on!
Thanks for the suggestion, Tiavina!
wow impressive breakdown Ken! (Y)
Glad you think so, Nikki!
Dear Ken, would be nice to react to Fabio Lione. Amazing rock and opera singer.
Great video as always. Cheers
Thanks for the suggestion, Victor!
Actually, I believe Tarja has performed Phantom of the Opera with Fabio Lione in some of her solo concerts. So, you might be able to find clips of that on youtube. It'll probably be fan recorded though. So, I don't how good the quality may be.
yay thank you very much!
Floor Jansen recorded a cover of "Alone" not a long time ago, please look it up :)
I've seen it!
More Nightwish videos please 😍 it's my favourite band. They inspired me to sing when I was 16 and if it wasn't for them many things would be so different for me... these videos are very educational and fun when you do the notes haha, you do seem to enjoy watching the performances and that's nice :)
Btw yeah, Storytime rocks 😂 it's a very fun song as well. The album - Imaginaerum - does make you travel with your mind.
We will!
Floor Jansen & Henk poort the Phantom of the Opera check that one out, let's here what you have to say about floor :)
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer uuh just check it out as melvin said. I really think Floor did it even better!
Great analysis Ken...
Guillermo Acosta thanks!
Tarja ❤ 🤩 Love from the 🇵🇭
Rock on!
Sakto jud tarja jud!!!
Thanks Ken, much appreciated. And yes, they are using background tracks a lot, just about every song has the London symphony orchestra (someone corrwct me if I got the name wrong) there too and for some reason they don't want to tour with the band 😂. AND of course it'd cost a huge load of money too. Background tracks are great when they add something that couldn't be done reasonably otherwise, but when it get's to the point of lip syncing... not cool.
Thanks for sharing, Cage80!
Hey Ken, what do you think of “ Steelheart”. The band still performs and the singer still hits it hard in his mid 50’s.
Jeff Dunn Love Steelheart. Miljenko has retained his voice. That's great.
I must say, you hit those high notes perfectly Ken...
Hey, just a kind note on pronunciation, Tarja is pronounced "Tareea", or Tarya, J in Finnish sounds like a weak "i", as in Aria
Thanks for the clarification Renan Colombini
And kudos to you Ken for always being so positive and responding with respect even when people post with zero culture xD
P.S. Marko is/was the only singer for Nightwish :P
