All Ring Doorbell Models Explained (Beginner-Friendly Buying Guide)

- Ring have come a long way since their appearance on Shark Tank back in 2013. Heck, they now offer 10 different smart doorbells (and over 10 smart cameras). Whilst this is good in terms of choice, it can also be pretty confusing.
What's the difference between the Ring Doorbell Pro 1 and Pro 2? Or the Ring Doorbell Wired and Pro? Is the Ring Doorbell 2020 edition worth buying, or should you get the Ring Doorbell 3 instead? Or should you pay $20 more for the Ring Doorbell 4?
Ring's product line-up is very confusing right now. As as a result, I shot this video to talk you through all the similarities and differences between each Ring Doorbell.
I start by covering the main difference - whether it's hardwired or battery-powered - and then I move onto the specific features.

Great video for future ring doorbell owners to make up their mind. Thank you very much for making this 🙏
Thanks for that, it's appreciated - glad the video helped you 🙂
@@SmartHomePoint my friend it really did, I purchased the ring pro 2 yesterday with the help of your video
That's awesome, glad to hear it 🙂 Enjoy the Pro 2 👍
you need an award for answering all of these questions!!! good job!!!
It took me an hour to find your video. This is EXACTLY what I needed to know. Features of each and battery versus wired. Very thorough and all my questions answered.
That's great, glad to hear the video was helpful 🙂
Thank you for posting all this very useful information. Whenever I have a question and I “google it” I’m noticing that your videos or articles are coming up as the most reliable and useful sources of information and answers to my questions. Thank you! I’ve now subscribed and I look forward to hearing/watching your new content!
No problem, and that's great to hear - many thanks 🙂 Yes we always aim to own all the products we write about and record, which helps I think. Some blogs just rely on third party sources, but I always find it best to put the reader/viewer first and answer their questions in full (ideally!). Thanks again 🙂
This is great. Well thought out, detailed, and well explained. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do - glad you liked the video 🙂

I was ready to give up on even purchasing one until I came across your video. It was clear and simple to understand. I am so excited to finally know which one to buy. Thank you

Glad to hear it 🙂
I couldn't decide which ring doorbell to buy till I came across your video. Thank you for helping me make the right choice
No worries, glad this video helped you out 🙂
Thank you very very much. I had some porch pirates today and am now trying to determine which Ring to buy. This was clear, helpful, efficient, and I laughed at your song :) 10/10
Haha glad you liked the song 😅 Sorry about the porch pirates, that sucks, but yep a Ring Doorbell can be a good deterrent for sure 👍
Thank you for this breakdown! Made my decision much easier!
Very welcome, great to hear you found this helpful! 🙂
I like the non-wired, just keep batteries charged. Thank you for the video, it was very informative 🙏🏽.
Glad you liked the video 🙂 And true, the battery ones are quite useful for sure
This is the second home in which ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).
THANKS... just what I needed. you provide more info than the ring comparison webpage. BTW.. Great voice! Broadcasting career would suit you!
Many thanks for all that 🙂 Glad you found the video helpful.
That was super helpful! I just got my Ring 1 2020.

Thanks for the concise summary!
Their product names prove they never expected to be so successful lol.
No worries, and agreed, their names are a confusing mess lol 🤣
Great video.
What wireless camera would you recommend for the door? Is it simply ring 4 and that's it? Any other good brands ? Ideally I don't want to pay for a subscription but not sure what would the best option me. Thank you!!
Great video!!! Do I need to have a subscription in order to access video? Or does it automatically upload video to iCloud for Apple users?
Great comparison & explanation
Thanks, glad you found it helpful 🙂
Ring has increased the price of most things lately. Cloud storage went from $3 to $4 / month or from $30 to $40 per year. The Pro 2 is $260, and in short supply (popular).
Yes that's true, Ring's price hikes aren't ideal. 😔 Unfortunately I can't edit videos to show the new prices, but thanks for flagging up the new prices. 👍
Why is the pro 2 sought after or so popular?
We bought a Ring 5UM5E5 2nd Generation doorbell in July 2021.
It was only about $50 and needs to be recharged every 6 weeks.
Can we just use upgrade to a newer model with the same mounting bracket
or do the newer models use different mounting brackets ?
Do the batteries for newer models need to be recharged just as frequently ?

I liked the video for your ring song but stayed for the information. Than you. 😂
Haha thanks 😆👍
Thanks for explaining all that...
No worries 🙂
Very useful video even if the battery doorbell lineup has changed a little since 2021.
I was just told by RING that in apart from USA and Canada, the wired-in bells DO NOT work with an existing chime. Can you confirm if this is the case?
@4:14 is there any way to hook up the Ring doorbell wired to the old doorbell’s mechanical chime too?
Unfortunately not that I'm aware of, the Ring Doorbell Wired isn't designed to ring an old mechanical chime (this is one of the big benefits of the Pro and Pro 2).
perfect video!
You are a fantastic speaker. I didn't hear a single erm.
Hi ring model 4 , @ $199 you have not said does it have a Loud ringing bell ??? how do you talk to your visitor after they ring the bell? do they ring the bell and it automatically opens up a verbal conversation to your phone?
many thanks
Pete!
Good point, I didn't cover that specific - although the answers apply to all Ring doorbells tbh. The doorbell volume is loud enough, and it also supports notifying you via your phone, a Ring Chime and/or Amazon Echo speakers too.
And yes, when someone presses your doorbell, you'll receive an alert on your phone. If you click this, it will open a video stream showing your visitor and you can then have a conversation with them - similar to a WhatsApp call.
Thanks for the video. Do both wired options come with a power adapter or can they only be powered from existing tradition doorbell wiring setup?
Neverminded, you covered it in your other video and they do. Thanks again.
Hah no worries, glad my videos have been helpful to you 🙂
No, they assume a powered doorbell, clearly stated. You can add any 24VAC, 40VA transformer but you do have to wire it up. Ring sells one ("Power Adapter") that plugs in, for about $25. I prefer the 3 wired versions, because they have more preview before an event, they can work with existing chime, and you don't have to recharge the battery every month. Chances are you will have a dead battery when that burglar comes around, no thank you. But I realize some would prefer the battery option, it's easier to install so it's attractive up front. Just remember, limited live view preview.
Do you have a video for the outdoor cameras?
Yes, I have another covering Ring's cameras here: ua-cam.com/video/uBhlcZ_GBRQ/v-deo.html
The singing was good 😁 do you know if it is possible to have a wired ring doorbell at your front door and then one wired to the back door so 2 x wired ring doorbells on one transformer? Or would it be best to have a battery Ring at the back door even if more expensive?
Lol thanks 😅 Uhm good question - I haven't tried it myself, but I have read from others who have had two Ring doorbells on one transformer without issue. The main issue would be if the transformer is borderline powerful enough, and you then have two Ring Pro 2 doorbells (since these use more power than the Ring Doorbell Wired, for example). But most transformers including the official Ring transformer should have enough headroom to power a second device.
Thank you!
No worries 🙂
awesome video.
Thanks 🙂
Nice one.. thanks
No worries, glad it was helpful 🙂
What about battery Peephole camera?? And what is the Chime that comes with it?? Good video though in general. Thanks
A fair question. Ring have stopped selling the peephole/door view cam now, which is unfortunate as it was a neat product. The plug-in Ring Chime is also useful, and I could have covered that too, you're right. Thanks 🙂
Looking to purchase a ring doorbell .but I would like to connect to my smart tv and smarthings can you please help or recommend which ring cam I would need to purchase
I haven't played with SmartThings recently so I can't say for sure, but I heard someone say that the newest products (Pro 2 and Doorbell 4) don't work well with ST. They also aren't listed here: www.smartthings.com/partners/ring
So maybe stick to the slightly older doorbell versions (Pro 1 or Doorbells 1-3) if you want to ensure Ring and SmartThings integration?
Is Ring 4 Plus better pick out of Ring 4 and 4 plus or is it not worth it?
The most confusing video Iv seen explaining Ring. But great effort 👍
Do you know how far the WiFi range works on these? I want to install one on my back gate which is around 25 meters from my router, will it work?
It's tricky, and it often depends on how powerful your router is. However 25 metres is probably too much for a reliable connection, and exploring a whole home WiFi system might make more sense. These allow you to place WiFi discs/points around your property, boosting the overall reach of your WiFi network.
I really needed this Thank you for posting :) 5*
Glad it was helpful 🙂

@@SmartHomePoint yes I did but I think I may go with Vivint but thanks again.
Thank you
I Have the 3rd Generation, if I wired it up to the mains with a Ring Plug, if the power went off, would it Still work with the battery? Many thanks.
Yes that should work fine. With the battery models (1-4), the wiring provides a trickle charge to the battery - much like the solar panels do for Ring's devices. This means that the battery is still in play, and can work even when the power is off.
Thank you for the video! I have a (gen 2) is that the discontinued ring 2 you speak of because the app makes a point of calling it 2nd generation?
No worries 🙂 Hmm good question, Ring 2 was a standalone product launched in 2017: www.techhive.com/article/582845/ring-video-doorbell-2-features-specs-pricing.html
This was an improvement over the original Ring Doorbell 1 from a year or two earlier. However Ring then upgraded the Ring Doorbell 1, making it the "Ring Doorbell (2020 Edition)" or "Ring Doorbell (2nd Generation)".
So it gets a bit confusing. The gen 2 you mention might actually be the upgraded Doorbell 1, especially if you purchased it in the last 1-2 years. 🙂
@Smart Home Point yes it's the 2020 edition. So It's just an upgraded ring 1. Thank you so much for your help. Much appreciated and Happy New Year.
No worries, and Happy New Year to you too - thanks 🙂
Do ring doorbells download video images for replay?
Thank you. You have a very good speaking voice and lavaliere mic. May I ask what it is?
Thanks, I appreciate that 🙂 I use the Tascam DR-10L, which is a pretty useful device.
@@SmartHomePoint Thanks!
thank you. i will get the 4 !
Good choice, that's a pretty solid battery doorbell - I hope it works well for you 🙂
If you have the non wired do you have to have a smartphone or can you use a tablet instead?
You can use either a tablet or smartphone - both will work fine. (This applies to all Ring cameras and doorbells, too - the Ring app works fine across different types of devices).
Will the ring doorbell 1 work if its a stolen one? My mate has one for sale
It depends if Ring were notified of the theft (see support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115003475783-What-to-do-if-your-Ring-device-is-stolen ). If they were notified, Ring would block the device so it couldn't be registered in other people's Ring app.
You should add Amazon affiliate links in the video description, great watch!!
Thanks, glad you liked it 🙂 And you're right, that would make sense to do thanks 👍
so I want the ring doorbell where you can quick release the battery and swap it asap so I don’t have to charge it using the orange wire. I want to have 2 batteries. when one battery dies I want to replace it fast with the 2nd battery I have that’s charged and recharge the dead battery and repeat the process. So I don’t miss a moment on my ring door bell. Please let me know which model to buy. Amazing video BTW
ua-cam.com/video/xEJNZCWU-XU/v-deo.html this is what i’m talking about.
Thanks, glad you liked the video 🙂 You'll need a Ring Doorbell that supports quick-release batteries, meaning the Ring Doorbell 3 and 4 (the Doorbell 2 has been effectively discontinued, and the Ring Doorbell 2nd Gen does NOT have a quick-release battery).
Wired doorbells outperform the battery ones but what if you hardwire a battery version? is the performance then the same or does the wired still win?
A good question, and to be honest I'm not 100% sure, it's something I intend on testing out myself. Having said that, my general understanding is that hardwiring the battery version only provides a trickle charge for the batter - it won't use the incoming Power for extra functionality. The Ring support page suggests this is the case too: support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/204252980-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Hardwired-vs-Battery-Powered-Operation
Superb
You have such a deep voice, you need to make bad bunny song covers!
Hah thanks 🙈😅
Gurl bff
I'd tongue punch his gooch
Who is bad hunny
Ugh I just want to make sure my ring is actually charging! Doesn’t seem to have any lights and I’m going to the airport ina few hours. Can’t find this info anywhere been searching for 2 hours
I think that the Device Health section of the Ring app would show this? It can take a few minutes to update (after plugging it in though)
Is there a monthly fee that I pay once I buy and hook it up???
There's an 'optional' Ring Protect subscription for $3 per month, but it's pretty useful. You don't get any recordings without paying that fee.
Battery models have solar option?
Good point/question - yes, you can purchase a separate solar panel mount for £50/$60.
Will there be an upgrade to their peephole camera soon?
I... doubt it. It seems more like Ring have scrapped the peephole cam: support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058732952-Ring-Peephole-Cam-no-longer-being-sold-on-Ring-com
They usually don't entirely scrap a product if they're planning in upgrading it. Usually they still sell the old one, before (and after) an upgrade.
Yea,very nice vid!
Thanks, appreciate it 🙂
Thanks, I am looking for a good system
I'm pleased with Ring overall (despite having one or two criticisms), hopefully you'll like whatever Ring device you choose too 🙂
I’m so confused by the ring range why so many video bell versions ?
LOL! I agree entirely, it's not clear why Ring have so many. I'm guessing they want to keep releasing a few products a year (at least) but still sell some of the older models so they struggle to delist them. But many companies do this (i.e. only sell this year's and last year's models), and it'd probably be good if Ring do that soon too.
A bit off topic ... but why are you pricing these in us dollars when your in the UK 🇬🇧 ?
A fair point, others have asked this too. It's because the majority of my viewers and blog readers are American, but going forward I will ensure that I give both US and UK prices. I agree it's a bit confusing for me as a Brit to be discussing American prices 🙂
Does the doorbell 4 cover head to toe and can manually select activation zones?
It doesn't have head to toe (the new Doorbell Wired Plus does though). The Doorbell 4 does have customizable motion zones though, which you can read about here: support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4402672227348-Utilising-Customisable-Motion-Zones-with-your-Ring-Video-Doorbell-4
@@SmartHomePoint can you do a comparison between the new plus and the ring 4?
Nice idea thanks. I'd ideally like to get my hands on the Plus and do a proper comparison vid, but that might take a month or two. I'll see how things go, but certainly, that would be a useful video for me to take. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
Hi From The Sky 💫
Thank you. Becoming a responsible adult is difficult.
Like your videos , I have ring (wired) and Ring has a long way to go to ,,,,, I would like to see you add a feature like to catch a Thief? So a good test of head to toe in real time speed and for future products 1-Thiefs run to steal package and can ring get a Face picture of this? but will Head to toe work? 2- Break in which would be most of the times is slower movement and more frames per min. than from the video can I get a Face pictures of it? 2- license plate numbers? Ring cant do this? if you really want to cut crime you need a bullet camera w less wide angle and this is the best way to catch a thief and the is a quicker of maybe get your package back and I really don't want to send money until Ring has products can do this? let me know what you think.
Thanks 🙂 And great comment - I agree with eve you said, all those features would be ideal. Right now it feels like Ring market their products as security cameras, but without always having the features or resolution/image quality to be properly used for crime prevention.
yeah
