This is the second home in which ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).
Ring has increased the price of most things lately. Cloud storage went from $3 to $4 / month or from $30 to $40 per year. The Pro 2 is $260, and in short supply (popular).

Looking to purchase a ring doorbell .but I would like to connect to my smart tv and smarthings can you please help or recommend which ring cam I would need to purchase
I haven't played with SmartThings recently so I can't say for sure, but I heard someone say that the newest products (Pro 2 and Doorbell 4) don't work well with ST. They also aren't listed here: www.smartthings.com/partners/ring So maybe stick to the slightly older doorbell versions (Pro 1 or Doorbells 1-3) if you want to ensure Ring and SmartThings integration?
Hi thank you for the video. I ordered the ring voice video from Amazon. Is this the doorbell one your talking about? It was $79 certified refurbished. Thank you, Heber
Unfortunately not that I'm aware of, the Ring Doorbell Wired isn't designed to ring an old mechanical chime (this is one of the big benefits of the Pro and Pro 2).
A fair question. Ring have stopped selling the peephole/door view cam now, which is unfortunate as it was a neat product. The plug-in Ring Chime is also useful, and I could have covered that too, you're right. Thanks 🙂

You can use either a tablet or smartphone - both will work fine. (This applies to all Ring cameras and doorbells, too - the Ring app works fine across different types of devices).
It's tricky, and it often depends on how powerful your router is. However 25 metres is probably too much for a reliable connection, and exploring a whole home WiFi system might make more sense. These allow you to place WiFi discs/points around your property, boosting the overall reach of your WiFi network.
so I want the ring doorbell where you can quick release the battery and swap it asap so I don’t have to charge it using the orange wire. I want to have 2 batteries. when one battery dies I want to replace it fast with the 2nd battery I have that’s charged and recharge the dead battery and repeat the process. So I don’t miss a moment on my ring door bell. Please let me know which model to buy. Amazing video BTW
Thanks, glad you liked the video 🙂 You'll need a Ring Doorbell that supports quick-release batteries, meaning the Ring Doorbell 3 and 4 (the Doorbell 2 has been effectively discontinued, and the Ring Doorbell 2nd Gen does NOT have a quick-release battery).
Ugh I just want to make sure my ring is actually charging! Doesn’t seem to have any lights and I’m going to the airport ina few hours. Can’t find this info anywhere been searching for 2 hours
It depends if Ring were notified of the theft (see support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115003475783-What-to-do-if-your-Ring-device-is-stolen ). If they were notified, Ring would block the device so it couldn't be registered in other people's Ring app.
No worries 🙂 Hmm good question, Ring 2 was a standalone product launched in 2017: www.techhive.com/article/582845/ring-video-doorbell-2-features-specs-pricing.html This was an improvement over the original Ring Doorbell 1 from a year or two earlier. However Ring then upgraded the Ring Doorbell 1, making it the "Ring Doorbell (2020 Edition)" or "Ring Doorbell (2nd Generation)". So it gets a bit confusing. The gen 2 you mention might actually be the upgraded Doorbell 1, especially if you purchased it in the last 1-2 years. 🙂
Yes that should work fine. With the battery models (1-4), the wiring provides a trickle charge to the battery - much like the solar panels do for Ring's devices. This means that the battery is still in play, and can work even when the power is off.
No, they assume a powered doorbell, clearly stated. You can add any 24VAC, 40VA transformer but you do have to wire it up. Ring sells one ("Power Adapter") that plugs in, for about $25. I prefer the 3 wired versions, because they have more preview before an event, they can work with existing chime, and you don't have to recharge the battery every month. Chances are you will have a dead battery when that burglar comes around, no thank you. But I realize some would prefer the battery option, it's easier to install so it's attractive up front. Just remember, limited live view preview.
Hi ring model 4 , @ $199 you have not said does it have a Loud ringing bell ??? how do you talk to your visitor after they ring the bell? do they ring the bell and it automatically opens up a verbal conversation to your phone? many thanks Pete!
Good point, I didn't cover that specific - although the answers apply to all Ring doorbells tbh. The doorbell volume is loud enough, and it also supports notifying you via your phone, a Ring Chime and/or Amazon Echo speakers too. And yes, when someone presses your doorbell, you'll receive an alert on your phone. If you click this, it will open a video stream showing your visitor and you can then have a conversation with them - similar to a WhatsApp call.
A fair point, others have asked this too. It's because the majority of my viewers and blog readers are American, but going forward I will ensure that I give both US and UK prices. I agree it's a bit confusing for me as a Brit to be discussing American prices 🙂
The singing was good 😁 do you know if it is possible to have a wired ring doorbell at your front door and then one wired to the back door so 2 x wired ring doorbells on one transformer? Or would it be best to have a battery Ring at the back door even if more expensive?
Lol thanks 😅 Uhm good question - I haven't tried it myself, but I have read from others who have had two Ring doorbells on one transformer without issue. The main issue would be if the transformer is borderline powerful enough, and you then have two Ring Pro 2 doorbells (since these use more power than the Ring Doorbell Wired, for example). But most transformers including the official Ring transformer should have enough headroom to power a second device.
It doesn't have head to toe (the new Doorbell Wired Plus does though). The Doorbell 4 does have customizable motion zones though, which you can read about here: support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4402672227348-Utilising-Customisable-Motion-Zones-with-your-Ring-Video-Doorbell-4
Nice idea thanks. I'd ideally like to get my hands on the Plus and do a proper comparison vid, but that might take a month or two. I'll see how things go, but certainly, that would be a useful video for me to take. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
Before you buy it, make sure you have new enough phone, otherwise you gonna miss all action in front of camera (very big delay), make sure your wifi router close enough to doorbell, thats also gives delays. So new doorbell camera + monthly subscribe + new phone + extra work to get router close to bell makes it very, very expensive.
Anyone watching this now needs to know that some of the info about the Wired is incorrect, or most probably, out of date. I've just fitted the Wired Doorbell, and it doesn't only just work with the Chime. It has the option to work with existing house chime, or even just connected a power plug, with chimes coming through to Echo Dot. Depends what package you buy. Also my Wired Doorbell does have Auto Replies where you say it doesn't. Thought I'd mention these, Knly incase anyone watches this and gets put off buying the Wired model.
Thanks for the updated info, it's appreciated 😊 You're quite right - originally, Ring said that it wouldn't have auto replies. Plus they seemed to suggest that it couldn't activate the existing house's chime. It's good that they appear to have resolved this, because it does mean that the Wired is a much more attractive purchase now IMO. Thanks again.
A good question, and to be honest I'm not 100% sure, it's something I intend on testing out myself. Having said that, my general understanding is that hardwiring the battery version only provides a trickle charge for the batter - it won't use the incoming Power for extra functionality. The Ring support page suggests this is the case too: support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/204252980-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Hardwired-vs-Battery-Powered-Operation
I... doubt it. It seems more like Ring have scrapped the peephole cam: support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058732952-Ring-Peephole-Cam-no-longer-being-sold-on-Ring-com They usually don't entirely scrap a product if they're planning in upgrading it. Usually they still sell the old one, before (and after) an upgrade.
Yes, unfortunately so. They must connect to a WiFi network (well, unless you buy the Ring Alarm Pro and pay $20/month - which then allows you to record locally... but that's not a common usecase). In short, Ring does depend on WiFi yes.
Its not really "all ring doorbell models" if you eliminate the first generations. Which is what I wanted to see a direct comparison between my first gen and later models.
A fair point, I should have said all currently sold models 🙂 My understanding, though, is that the Doorbell 1 First Gen has lower Res (720p) and slightly worse motion detection performance, but other than that it's similar to the later models. There's a technical comparison between the first and second gen models here: support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360045514872-Telling-the-difference-between-the-Ring-Video-Doorbell-1st-Generation-and-Ring-Video-Doorbell-2nd-Generation-#:~:text=The%20Ring%20Video%20Doorbell%20(1st%20Generation)%20has%20sensors%20on%20the,device%20or%20the%20mounting%20plate.
LOL! I agree entirely, it's not clear why Ring have so many. I'm guessing they want to keep releasing a few products a year (at least) but still sell some of the older models so they struggle to delist them. But many companies do this (i.e. only sell this year's and last year's models), and it'd probably be good if Ring do that soon too.
Like your videos , I have ring (wired) and Ring has a long way to go to ,,,,, I would like to see you add a feature like to catch a Thief? So a good test of head to toe in real time speed and for future products 1-Thiefs run to steal package and can ring get a Face picture of this? but will Head to toe work? 2- Break in which would be most of the times is slower movement and more frames per min. than from the video can I get a Face pictures of it? 2- license plate numbers? Ring cant do this? if you really want to cut crime you need a bullet camera w less wide angle and this is the best way to catch a thief and the is a quicker of maybe get your package back and I really don't want to send money until Ring has products can do this? let me know what you think.
Thanks 🙂 And great comment - I agree with eve you said, all those features would be ideal. Right now it feels like Ring market their products as security cameras, but without always having the features or resolution/image quality to be properly used for crime prevention.
Nice video, but I think you need to figure out who exactly you are trying to target with these videos. You’re clearly English and living in the UK, yet your videos state all prices in dollars and you mention features that are currently only available in the US and not in the UK (at this time) like Amazon Alexa greetings. Also the birds eye view function on the Pro 2 is a horrible blurry mess the UK compared to the US. Not having a go, just a bit of constructive criticism.
Hey Jason, many thanks for the constructive comment, it's appreciated 🙂 You're definitely right about the UK/US thing - up to 60% of my viewers (and blog readers) are American, and only 15-20% are British. So I do target the US as a result. However I should do more to highlight features that barely work (or aren't available) outside of the US. Ring aren't great at supporting the UK at the moment. Anywhoo thanks again 👍
I went to upgrade from a second generation Ring and wanted to see some of new awesome features in the Ring 4. I left disappointed, the features are 99% the same (nothing new). The newest Pro model offers the extra features (head to toe video, 1536p HD+ Video, +3D Motion Detection, package alert, bird’s eye view). They need to bring these feature over to the battery models.
Yes I agree, it would be nice if Ring started offering some more of these features on battery. Some would drain the battery more (especially the 3D radar and bird's eye view), but other features should be fine to offer on all their devices .

@@SmartHomePoint yeah, especially for the price during Prime Day or Black Friday - for £35 I got the doorbell, the power adapter and echo dot speaker.
Best video ever ! Thank you

you are a genius 👏 thank you very much indeed for your help mate🤝
Great precise review. Wish all tech reviews were like this.
Thanks, I appreciate that 🙂
Wired doorbells outperform the battery ones but what if you hardwire a battery version? is the performance then the same or does the wired still win?
A good question, and to be honest I'm not 100% sure, it's something I intend on testing out myself. Having said that, my general understanding is that hardwiring the battery version only provides a trickle charge for the batter - it won't use the incoming Power for extra functionality. The Ring support page suggests this is the case too: support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/204252980-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Hardwired-vs-Battery-Powered-Operation
Will there be an upgrade to their peephole camera soon?
I... doubt it. It seems more like Ring have scrapped the peephole cam: support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058732952-Ring-Peephole-Cam-no-longer-being-sold-on-Ring-com
They usually don't entirely scrap a product if they're planning in upgrading it. Usually they still sell the old one, before (and after) an upgrade.
Thank you. Becoming a responsible adult is difficult.
Very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
So one has to install wifi before buying ring?
Yes, unfortunately so. They must connect to a WiFi network (well, unless you buy the Ring Alarm Pro and pay $20/month - which then allows you to record locally... but that's not a common usecase). In short, Ring does depend on WiFi yes.
Can you just buy a indoor camera - do I need to buy the door bell. I already have security cameras
Great comparison & explanation

Well Done Video Sir.
Going with the Pro 2
Thanks 🙂 And good choice, the Pro 2 does have some great features to be fair.
Great vid.
Brilliant video! Thank you
You're very welcome, glad it helped 🙂
I’m so confused by the ring range why so many video bell versions ?
Great simple video!!!!!!
Thanks 🙂
Thanks for explaining all that...
No worries 🙂
Hi From The Sky 💫
Thanks, I am looking for a good system
I'm pleased with Ring overall (despite having one or two criticisms), hopefully you'll like whatever Ring device you choose too 🙂
Thank you. Great Video.
Glad it helped you 🙂
Like your videos , I have ring (wired) and Ring has a long way to go to ,,,,, I would like to see you add a feature like to catch a Thief?
Thank you
thank you. i will get the 4 !
Good choice, that's a pretty solid battery doorbell - I hope it works well for you 🙂
Nice video, but I think you need to figure out who exactly you are trying to target with these videos.
Very helpful 👍🏻.
Thanks 🙂
I went to upgrade from a second generation Ring and wanted to see some of new awesome features in the Ring 4. I left disappointed, the features are 99% the same (nothing new). The newest Pro model offers the extra features (head to toe video, 1536p HD+ Video, +3D Motion Detection, package alert, bird’s eye view). They need to bring these feature over to the battery models.
Yes I agree, it would be nice if Ring started offering some more of these features on battery. Some would drain the battery more (especially the 3D radar and bird's eye view), but other features should be fine to offer on all their devices .
We bought a Ring 5UM5E5 2nd Generation doorbell in July 2021.
It was only about $50 and needs to be recharged every 6 weeks.
Can we just use upgrade to a newer model with the same mounting bracket
or do the newer models use different mounting brackets ?
Do the batteries for newer models need to be recharged just as frequently ?
