That ‘self healing’ automation DEFINITELY needs its own video, the various issues random power cuts we’ve experienced over time causes me far more headaches in making sure my smart devices operate uninterrupted
You need a pressure sensor under the toilet brush holder so that when you take the brush out to clean the toilet it will tell your wife that you are in the process of cleaning the toilet and when you return brush to the base the sensor will notify her that the cleaning process is complete and is ready for the "Toilet" inspection. Great video!

The pressure sensor on your bed is great but one tip. Rotate the pad so that it’s laying on all the wood supports. It’s to hold it a little better also maybe it reads more areas in your spot and will cover your body length
11:52 I have the electrical switch replaced with an electrical switch with some lights pointing down, its always on when it's dark, but I also have a battery powered motion sensor light in a different spot in case the power the house goes out. Both are dimmable and the battery powered one is only on when its dark enough and if there's movement.
Thanks for the video. I never realized that the Withings integration was fixed so that the sleep sensor would show occupancy natively. I just mine out of the closet and set them up again. Thank you.
Ha ha. That look at the end. I think that's my permanent face when it comes to chores at home (and picking up the endless amounts of toys that seem to distribute themselves all over the house thanks to my children) 😂
Correct... I have a circulation pump and no return line. And I have an automation that turns it on/off throughout the day based on motion on the bathrooms and kitchen (where water is used).
@@chrisabrams1238 I added one in our master bathroom sink and one in our kitchen to cover both directions the hot water runs in. But we have a tank, so there were no functionality issues with it only one the one sink initially
I’m slowly getting into automations. I only really have two or three. Our house is slab on grade so it takes forever for the hot water to get from the garage to the other side of the house, especially in the winter. So we installed a hot water circulator that unfortunately has one of those old time dial timers. But I hooked it up to a smart plug and have it set to turn on in the morning on days we go to work. I also have it set to turn on after a certain amount of time when I go for a run so I have instant hot water when I get home. I also have a setup that turns it on when I leave the gym and go home. Unfortunately the gas station and drug store are in the same area so it turns on the pump sometimes. I need to figure out how to be a little more precise in the location. And like you I have a smart switch that turns on our outside lights at sunset and off at sunrise
Another automation I want to figure out is how to have the bathroom exhaust fan turn off when humidity levels have dropped back to normal after a shower. I saw someone mention it in a video but I’ve never been able to find that video again to ask them how they did it
@@tatts4life838use a home assistant helper to make a derivative sensor for humidity. If %/min change is a large positive number, the humidity just spiked (the shower is on). When the %/min is a large negative number, the humidity tanked (ie. the door was opened). Wait for the %/min to get back to around 0, and it's stabilized and you can now turn off the fan.

You've got to switch those office LEDs to WLED. It works great with home assistant, and the customizability is endless. I made mine using cutable strips, a Dig Uno and a defuser bar. It takes a little work depending how you set them up, but it's worth the hassle. They're pretty responsive and I have yet to experience them going offline. It could make for a good DIY video.
Reed, Please make a video about the pressure sensor! Would love to have one, my DIY one just doesn’t work that well. Keep your good work going, love your videos!
This sounds SO MUCH like my day it’s scary 😂 I might have to do my own version of this video as I’ve recently added a bunch of extra routine automations to keep my kids in check and going to bed on time.
I'm quite curious how you did the lights being dynamic based on playback state of the tv. I've kinda automated mine to depend on tv power state which is fine but having the lights come on when I pause would actually be so cool.
@@scrampker I have an Apple TV but I'm pretty sure I can make it work on that too, I did some looking around after this and found someone that had a setup like that using some motion sensor linked to playback trickery or something. Reed one thing to help you get enough sleep and be able to wake up on time. Is by going to talk to your doctor and get a sleep apnea test. If you're having a hard time waking up in the morning like I do sometimes it's probably because you have sleep apnea and you don't know it yet. So talk to your doctor and get tested.
I'm impressed and I got a handful of ideas for my HA journey. Thanks for the videos! . Btw, which lock are you using in the studio/office door? Thanks!
Awesome!!!! But wait - you do know you CAN have an automation that SETS the alarm for you on your Android phone, right? That way you can set an early alarm for when your calendar event is before your normal alarm goes off. You can also open and activate apps on the phone, so start Strava when you go running (which the phone can also detect). And you could have unlocked the door when you arrived home when it detects a person at the door and your location is arriving home.
When I saw you turn on the shower water and then the fan I thought you might consider a circulation pump like I have. When I turn on the fan in either bathroom or the light over the sink, my circ pump gets the water hot out on the extremities of the house. I feel ok about the electricity use since I have solar, and waste less water than before I added that automation.
Note: Plants won't filter CO2 into O2 if there is no light in the room, in fact, they will begin cellular respiration, which will convert O2 into CO2. I just got and installed the airgradient one airquality sensor so I can also monitor my co2 levels in my home and have it automate putting my ac in fan mode to promote airflow and remind me to open a window. As for a doorbell I use a shelly button as my doorbell button and have an automtion to turn on the monitor on my rack where I have my camera feeds show and it also takes a snapshot to display in a persistent notification to show who is/was at the door on the phone at the time, I even use tasker to automate putting the phone out of silent mode, play the sound file for the trigger word in the notification title then put it back in silent. As for smart plugs I have one setup like a wattman to monitor my pc wattage usage and I have a wake on lan automation that runs after 9s after the plug is turned on heh. @@dansilchuk I dunno what I was saying looked gaudy 😆. I think I meant my buttons and Everything Presence Lites. They stand out, but they could be completely hidden as Inovelli switches! I bought my first Inovelli switches as Zigbee fan controllers. That's a project I've been trying to do for years. Once I figured out you could control them from the switch, I bought some and found out light dimmers aren't the same as fan dimmers, so I bought the Inovelli to replace my Enbrighten (JASCO). I also bought some in-fan units too as the upstairs fans aren't all on light switches! Point is, I agree that having switches in the walls with motion or presence detection makes them blend in with the house. I don't like light switches in general because they mess up my smart lights, but I could solve that with Inovelli switches as they can turn off the relay in software! Lastly, I have all these IKEA Rodrent switches that work SUPER well. I can put them wherever I want on any wall, and they're also magnetic. I just don't like that they look like they don't belong even though I can place them in spots that make sense unlike my current light switch panels (they're so complicated in this house!). I'm torn at the moment for what I wanna do if I move. In this house? Oh for sure, I'm gonna put a few Inovellis in so my kids and guests don't keep resetting with my smart lights if I move. But it's not an affordable way of doing it. Switch covers make way more sense cost-wise, and that's what I've gone with for now. So really, I don't have a preferred switch. I'd love to explore more options. I know a lot of people use Lutron, but I really don't like proprietary systems no matter how good the brand is.
Turning lights upon detection the vibration of a piano seems questionable to me as it implies you would enter a dark room and start playing (what?) in darkness. I'd put a plain mmWave presence sensor and be done with it
Thumbs up for listening to Metallica to wake up! There is one thing I don't get with all your automations: What happens if your day is totally different from a normal day? Like, school ends earlier than usual? Or other stuff which possibly messes up time triggered automations? How do you handle this? For us, every day is different, as work/school is very dynamic. We have to get up at different times, we are not at home at the same time or for the whole day, ... So I'm looking for ideas/inspirations how I could possibly solve this problem with my automations. (heating, lights, ventilation and so on) Everything needs to be dynamically, depending on time, sunrise/sunset, who is (not) at home and whatever you can think of. Makes it pretty complex.
These automations are based on a daily and timely routine. Wouldn't the triggers going off on days when you're not following that routine get pretty annoying? Is there a way you control that?

With the number of home automations you have, what kind of hardware are you running on? Also, are you using HAOS or docker install?
Whats your smart door on office? And how do you integrate lockly lock?
Have you considered getting the presence switches from Inovelli to get rid of the plugged in sensors?
I have! After watching Linus's recent video, I realized, they look gaudy, but they would look like part of the house as ugly wall switches.
@ what switch type do you prefer? In my opinion they are some of the best looking smart switches.
(heating, lights, ventilation and so on)
Everything needs to be dynamically, depending on time, sunrise/sunset, who is (not) at home and whatever you can think of.
Makes it pretty complex.
2:40 How does your dashboard know what room you're in?
Bluetooth presence
@@gregormartynus6178 how is that granular enough though? It feels like that wouldn't give very good accuracy
@@iso_2013 many bluetooth presense detectors. Enough to triangulate which room you are in
I gave up on ESPresence. Great for general "spaces", but couldn't get phones to emit consistently enough to be dependable
These automations are based on a daily and timely routine. Wouldn't the triggers going off on days when you're not following that routine get pretty annoying? Is there a way you control that?
What tablet and arm do you use at your desk in the office for the dashboard.
What pressure sensor do you use for the bed? Thanks
Any chance we could get links to some of the devices featured in this video? Like the pressure sensors, occupancy sensors or motion sensors?
Great way to transport the kids.
Is that universal remote the control 4 universal remote?
Bro got his life ON LOCK
Thanks Reed.
Ahhhh i was scarried about the automatic switching to another language from youtube. The Audio Soundtrack... in german ^^
I am surprised to listen it in hindi. didn't expect😅
Great ideas!
I’m 55 seconds in and I already like the fact that it played for whom the bell tolls by Metallica🤘🎸
Unfortunately a single plant won't be enough to lower the CO2 level. Maybe try a few barrels of algae.
could you make a video about more of the self healing options?
Reed,
Thank you for sharing your home with us, and an even bigger thank you for showcasing our small company’s PLT-1 Plant Soil Moisture Sensor! WHY ARE YOU SLEEPING ON A NAKED PILLOW ?!? Where is your pillow case? Ew?! 😂
can you explain how that pressure mat automation works?
What is your smart home dashboard app called? I currently use Alexa on mine but yours is way more functional and intuitive!
Home assistant?
@murraywaters9130 thank you!
Which lockly lock do you have?
How much is your electric bill
8:50 how about automate your dishwashing with a dishwasher?
do you have any energy related automations ?
Grinning to myself, I have so many Toys. Yet my day is never the same, so often the automations get in the way.
I personally I like words to trigger actions,,,, grumble... I sometimes😢 mispronounce the words after a glass 🍷🥂
How is it that home assistant knows what room you are in?
4:22 it's always those silly Govee LED Strips that you cannot control locally and magically disconnect from the cloud and also lose the ability to get a Wifi signal next to an access point...
