Went through a similar "agonizing" time of debating whether or not to buy the Ninja V to go on my a6400. Then, Atomos dropped the price of the Ninja V by some $350 for a month or so. Managed to find the ONE left in stock in Vancouver and raced with money in hand. My trip from discovery to acquisition was about 2 1/2 years and a few crappy used monitors from FB Marketplace. Couldn't be happier that I now have this little beast of a screen.
I did the same, I put my a7iii in a small rig with the handle on top. Then the ninja on top of it. I found it adds enough weight that footage handheld comes out a little more stable. Most of all though just being able to shoot in 4k forever without worrying about it stopping recording is nice. Also, I think the screen on the ninja is much better when using manual lenses + focus peaking. Plus, just having a screen anyways is really helpful and it isn't that much more weight to be honest.
I have had my Ninja V since it came out and it's an amazing piece of kit that I did not need. It is great to be able to use multiple cameras with the same SSD which makes workflow easier as you pointed out. It doers come in handy on my X-T3 if I need a front facing screen. It's expensive but will be worth it for some. Thanks for braving the cold to make this video!
Checking-in from May 2022.. The Atomos Ninja V is now at $399, and an A7III is around $1200 used.. Got 2x Atomos Ninja V and A7III. 2.5" SSD has also gotten cheaper.. Couldn't be happier.. Great inputs and video!
I've been using the Ninja V with my Canon 5D Mk IV for about a month now. Mainly I needed to get past the 30 minute recording limit (concert and dance performance shooting), but the Ninja's prores files are noticeably better than the files produced by the 5D, especially in low light/high ISO situations - less noise, no blown out highlights. It is almost like having an entirely new camera. I consider it money well spent.
Hi and thanks for all your videos! I'm just wondering if you can record on the camera AND Ninja at the same time? (Basically to have a back up if you have a single card slot camera) Also how long does a battery last on it? Thanks!
Hello from the future. I tried recording simultaneously internally on my A7riii and externally on my Ninja V. Worked fine, but the internal record still times out at 29 minutes, and when it stops recording, it stops the Nina V at the same time.
I have one, and it's great, however there are two main downsides imo: 1. You can't record 120fps on the atomos, meaning if you like to shoot a combination of slowmo and regular footage, you will find yourself switching back and forth between the external recording and internal recording, which also requires you to unplug the atomos cord from your camera in order to have the sony's screen work. 2. When recording externally, if you have a camera with duel sd cards, you are forfeiting the duel record feature, which for some professional work may be a deal-breaker and a good reason to record internally instead.
I watch these for beer review and explanations, but when the details go over my head, I stay for the beats. Seriously though coffee shop, low - key, chill music is amazing! ☕️ 🥰
Enjoy the new gear dude! If it makes life a bit easier, then it's all good! The Atomos stuff is really great, and it's a huge help to nail manual focus, making sure stuff isn't blown out etc.etc.etc. I couldn't live without mine now to be honest. Maybe I'm going slightly blind, but the bigger screen is an absolute joy!
Dunna Did It Check your footage that you record at 422HQ - Resolve says the footage coming out of the a7iii is 10-bit and it certainly feels like it when grading
Really? I have graded a bit and it does feel like there's a bit more to it, but I figured that was the 4:2:2. I wonder if the file from the ninja v is 10 bit but the sony is only outputing 8 bit into it. Like upscaling 1080 to 4k... its still just 1080.
Shoots in DNxHR for Windows people. Which is also what Resolve uses for their optimized media. That could save so much time..... Dang it Dunna, now I really want one.
Funnily enough, I just sold my Ninja V and UA-cam suggested this video… for my experience, great piece of gear, but made all my set up too heavy: extra batteries, extra battery charger, extra hdmi cable, extra monitor mount, extra handle when using my Ronin S, extra settings to worry about… I found it more a disadvantage than an advantage especially when shooting solo on location…
Gerald Undone is our Master Splinter 😂 I also messaged him before I bought😎 great video bro! The small improvements to the a7iii and the future proof is worth the price tag for Sony shooters
Hi, phenomenal video! I don't know who created this by my highest compliments. If someone wants to create a catchy, fun to watch video simply study what was going on in this video. This video is a ten out of ten: l. incredibly catchy, fast paced, cool music; 2. matching the editing shots and movements to the music beat; 3. fast pace but not frantic, 4. minimal but fun use of graphics. A happy, smiling actor. Really, really outstanding pro level.
Ninja V is an indispensable tool to me. Too many great video tools, from false color to focus peaking, robust, lightweight, perfect size for framing and focusing, and the SSD card just slides right off the back for really fast data transfer. I just shot a feature; 25 X 16 hour days and it was flawless. I shot the S5 into the Ninja so I was getting Full Frame, Prores 5.9k 422 at 12 bit, non stop, all day, flawless! I would not go on a shoot without it.
Is it just me or is there a weird sound at 11:26? Great video as always, Dunna. I picked one up for myself for all the same reasons and it’s made a world of difference in my workflow.
So weird!! I just double checked my export as well and it’s in there. Something weird happened on the export from premiere I guess 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks a ton! That’s awesome to hear!
I got the Shugun 7, worth it for the face detect alone, but the image anlaysis features, XLR in, and codecs were a huge change in my workflow for the better that I didn't expect. Also adds a lot of needed video features that the Sony A9 is missing and allows me to shoot better matchable video along side my A7RIII.
I decided on the atomos shinobi over the ninja v. Why? $200 price difference, did not include hard drive nor battery. So for the extra $50, I got the accessory kit which included the sunshade, 2 batteries, etc. Not sure I really need the record function for my usage. But needed the larger brighter screen. My only complaint is I can't see everything that appears on my sony zv1 (although I have not done a firmware update yet). I can only see what the lens sees plus audio level. It does not show all the settings. I wish (for the price of these) it included battery and either a 1/4 20 or cold shoe mount. My shinobi only came as monitor, nothing else in box. I think the $600 price tag if the ninja v, you should get a battery and a drive. My entire shinobi bundle was under $500 including sales tax. I only needed to but a mount and hdmi cables. Also word of advice. If your camera has a micro hdmi port,* DO NOT * use the coiled cable. Use a straight in. The coiled cable is stiff and pulls on the port resulting on a bad connection and risk breaking your port.
I did the same with the GH5 and the Ninja V. So for months I researched and listened how various UA-camr said you only need the Ninja V if you need to record 4k 10bit 60fps and I didn't really care about the 10bit 60fps. In the end I went for it and bought the ninja v and the footage I now have to work with ( which is ProRes LT or HQ) make grading the footage and playback is so worth the cost. The end product that I get from the ninja v gives me a professional and cinematic footage that I was never able to get from the gh5 on it's own. So I get what you are saying . Great video .
Nice! Thanks for sharing! I agree 100% I’ve done one video (for next week) since this one and the whole process was just so much more smooth. Getting exposure is a snap, editing and grading prores is a pleasure. The only downside is added size/weight.
I noticed a solid jump in how much I can push the Luma values in post using the ATOMOS Ninja Inferno with the A6300 which shoots the same codec and data rate as the A7iii I believe. You’re gonna love it dude! Have fun!
I am in the same boat as you were. I have had it in my shopping cart for a good 7 months even prior to me getting my camera (XT-3). As you state it's not needed, but not having to use my camlink to show my screen would be most beneficial. Thanks for the video, I may be pulling the trigger on it or an action camera soon.
I've got this same setup (including the camlink 4k) & I discovered that i Really like the image i get when i let the Ninja down-res my 4k input to a 1080 output using the passthrough & recording into quicktime on my computer. Maybe even as good as the "infamous" All-I 1080p from Canon?!?
Now I really want this even though I use the SmallHD. But that external recording with no limit and editing from external drive could way improve my workflow! Dang it Dunna!
It's all about how far you are pushing the colour grading and not having colour banding like in sky's after grading for example. You won't notice it otherwise. Unless you are doing TV broadcast, you do not need 422. But it's lovely to have if you can easily afford it.
Seems worth it for face tracking in 4k alone. I hate that I have to unplug my current monitor to enable facetracking! Great video, more tempted to pick one up now!
@dunna: if I can ask you which lens would you recommend me for my Sony A7iii. Right now I am shooting with Sony 28mm f2. Is it Tamron 17-28 2.8 or Sony 16-35 F4? Sharpness and auto focus is my priority. I shoot indoor for my UA-cam tech videos. Will those two lens prove to be an upgrade over my 28 mm lens ?
I am considering getting this recorder for my EOS R one day... It would get me the 4:2:2, 10 bit, prores... so it will get me an image quality upgrade. For now, I am just playing around and learning how to shoot video.
@@dunnadidit Can you confirm this: I have an EOS R and with the Ninja V, I can record video the entire time while doing a photo shoot. The video is recorded to the Ninja and the Camera RAW photos recorded to the camera. So basically I'm video recording the entire shoot as well as capturing photos. Is this correct?
I love my Ninja 5, allows me to shoot 10bit 4:2:2 colour from my now aged C100 Mark ii effectively prolonging it's life. The on screen monitoring options are great as well. Not sure it's 100% necessary for shooting yourself, but fantastic monitor/recording source in the field shooting client work. Great video dude, I like the smaller profile this one has over mine, it's a bit of a mini beast ;)
@@dunnadidit Definitely, although I only have the C100 mark ii...so it effective extends the life of that now "vintage" cinema camera lol. The flip screen aspect is definitely key though.
@@MylonasFilms Not sure what you mean "fake 10 bit". The Sony isn't 10 bit, fake or not. It's 8 bit, I'm not sure you can fake the colour depth. Canon C100 mark ii has always been able to do 10 bit external recording. Most older Atomos recorders can enable this.
@@MarkHoltze that's all I needed to know. The Sony Fs5 for example can use a external recorder to record 422 10 bit but it's not actual 10 bit. It's still 8 bit. Didn't the guy even say this in the video above? It's not real 10bit, just 422 out of the recorder.
Is that Ikea lamp in the background in your room? I'm trying to pick between 1 lamp and 3 lamp versions, I'm thinking to use 3 lamp versions with Aputure RGBs.
I’m on the fence right now whether to buy this to turn that eight bit into 10 bit. Is it negligible when Pushing slog2 footage? Is Artifact and banding less noticeable or about the same thanks dunna
Hold that thought! It doesn’t actually turn 8 bit into 10 bit! You’re still only getting whatever data your camera can output, you’re just putting it in a 10 bit container. So you won’t really get any more bit depth for color grading, the files are just more efficient for your computer to work with than the more compressed internal options.
I used to have a Video Device Pix video recorder which was able to record 60p Prores HQ even though I was outputting 24p from the camera. It kind of made an override of the incoming signal and recorded on to whatever framerate you selected.
Is there a noticeable difference between the size of the sony screen and the ninja v? Like what is the overall real estate dimension size? Wondering if I should pick up a Shinobi for now as the total cost would be about $500 for batteries, and a cage, whereas the ninja v would be $1400 for batteries cage, 1tb ssd, where as the shogun would be about $1700 for batteries, ssd, cage - i'm thinking that 7" would be a much more noticeable difference than 5 inch but what do you think?
@@dunnadidit I bought Shinobis for both of my A7III but ended up returning them when I found out that you cannot have neither proxy recording or face detection when using HDMI and recording internally. Just like it's been told in this video. Too bad Ninja V was 2x the price of Shinobi and I wasn't happy with HDMI starting lag (takes like 5 to 10 seconds to see an image in monitor when turning on the camera) so I still don't have a monitor.
Being in lockdown for Coronavirus in Toronto, I am in same boat...have been thinking of this for 1+year...i might just pull the trigger... Do you think the Atomos Ninja V is still a good buy as of March/April 2020? Thanks for video.
Hey! Really leaning towards this after your video. Only thing putting my off is no 1080 120fps. What happens if I try and film in 120fps with the Ninja V attached to my a7iii? Can it still be used as a monitor and just record to the cameras SD card?
Super vid, Dunna. I aim to buy the Atomos Shogun Inferno 7 to pair with my Nikon Z6 in order to go with ProResRAW. So, a specific purpose for it then. Cheers, brother of vid excellence! 💛 P.S., kitty cameo is touch of class.
I must say, I almost purchased one as well. However, I think I enjoy the H264 codec bc with a powerful computer, like the latest iMac with FCP, it doesn’t take too long to convert to ProRes. Additionally, after the project is done, I’ve found a good satisfaction in deleting the rendered and converted media which only leaves the original h264 videos. These are a lot smaller. So, if I shoot straight to ProRes & I’m done with the project and want to store it then I’ll have to do so with the big chunky files of prores vs the H264 Sony format.
You could also shoot prores, and convert them all to h.264 after for storage 🤷🏻♂️. I wonder if there is a difference between shooting h.264 and converting vs shooting in prores. One thing I can think of right off the bat is the 4:2:2. But I don’t know how big of a deal that will be.
Is there a way to use touch focus (for the lens to focus where you tap) on the Atomos screen? Liked for example tap the Atomos screen and have the lens focus where I tap, like it would if I tapped (with touch focus on) wherever I touch on the a7siii monitor?
Nice informative video, for me there are 3 things which are dealbreaker 1st face tracking AF 2nd Unlimited record time 3rd Luts, I don’t talk about things like free spinning tilting monitor A7III lacks
If you don't have a hard drive plugged in and record straight to the SD card on your camera would Face Tracking still be available? or is Face Tracking disabled for any monitor that is plugged into the Sony A7iii
I can tell you why I got the Ninja V. It's mostly about quality (yes indeed) and saving $$$. So, I got a second hand A7s because I wanted that sensor but didnt want to pay a premium price. My previous inexpensive APS-C Canon camera just didn't cut it when it came to video quality, at 1080p the footage looks a bit mushy, and at 4k the crop and noise is just too much. The A7s was a big improvement here already with hugely better quality even at 1080p, but when I saw what it can do at 4K, the Ninja V was a must-have (since the A7s cannot record 4k internally). Also got a good deal on it. The quality of the 4k prores 422 recording with the Ninja V is lightyears ahead of anything I ever used before. That's not a very subtle difference. So this setup now allows me to get really decent 4K footage, since the A7s sensor is still really good, and the internal recording quality of the Ninja V is top notch as well. I believe there is no other way to get this kind of video quality for so little money. Apart from that, it's pretty useful to have a high quality field monitor while recording. Of course it's much easier just to use my old canon with continuous autofocus and all, it's also smaller and lighter. But the video quality really hurts my eyes, now more than ever before. Sometimes a lightweight and easy-to-use setup just doesn't cut it. Of course the A7s II could also be an option, since it records 4K internally. But then I still would want to have a field monitor. And the A7s II records at a way lower bitrate than the Ninja V, I kinda doubt it could keep up with it quality-wise. Surely the A7s III would be great, but it's still pretty darn expensive. So, being on a tight budget, the Ninja V together with the A7s is quite an interesting option. Plus it gives me all the added value that the Ninja V provides, which is quite substantial in total. The only thing I'm missing is a good autofocus, but there's no inexpensive way I can imagine to get a really good autofocus with this kind of video quality, so I have to live with it for now.
Bought a Atomos Shogun Flame 4K. This has all this features but also have HDR monitoring and 1500 nits. And i bought it for 850 dollars with: Hdmi cabel, 240gb ssd, battery, smallrig cage/Sun hud and smallrig hotshoe. That was used marked. Did I do a good deal?
I hear that for sure! I think this will still be super handy when Sony has 10 bit and 4k60 though! I shot a whole video on it last week (for next Monday) and it was FANTASTIC. NOOOO REGRETS AT ALL!
The only reason I wanted to buy a monitor is because the A7III doesn't have a flip screen. I often make pictures with the camera close to the ground in portrait orientation, I can't see anything while I'm doing this... But I ordered a workaround from Aliexpress for €5, just a phone holder mounted on a cold shoe adapter, so I can put my smartphone on top of my camera and connect them through Wifi.
Dunna Did It definitely excited about prores cause I’ll have an external hard drive built in, but also redundancy when recording video is a big deal for me and my work. If I’m doing a 30min + keynote 🙆🏻♂️need to have a back up
HVRIS that’s the camera I shoot with. One thing I learned was when you record in normal picture profiles through the atomos you actually loose some luminance which sucks, you’re not at 0-255 any more. If you shoot in f log you don’t need to worry. It’s a hidden thing I discovered only after getting my atomos on my x-t3 I noticed my blacks looked crushed. The data is there it has to be activated in post, again this is only when recording in standard picture profiles. Hope that helps you man.
HVRIS I was actually contemplating returning mine after I saw that but after shooting in f log last Saturday for the entire day then color grading with the f log to eterna LUT in post I actually like it. F log is excellent and retains a good deal of dynamic range. Plus I kept it because of all the reasons Dunna mentioned here.
Hi I'm french, ad I have a Sony a7iii with 3 lens. I shoot in hlog 2 a'd have a Lilliput à 7s in external monitor. On the NinjaV. How come the recording button is grayed out on the monitor screen if the codec is ProRes RAW. But it is available on ProRes. I am also shooting on Sony A73
Hi I want one for all of the same reasons you have l have a6300 that’s shoots 6K and down sample it to 1080 or 4K is the atomosV going to read the 6K signal ?? Regardless I still want one Do you have fan noises?? Other have returned it for that JoP
Question on that right-angle HDMI cable, I have an A7R IV and it looked like the doors on camera ports would be in the way of the right angle cable. Did you have to take off the doors to make it fit or does it stick out far enough to go over them? On the A7R IV the doors stick out about 1cm when open and can't be removed.
On the a7iii, the doors don’t stick out like that so I’m not sure, they kind of just flop around (which is really annoying) but you can use other cables too.
great vid.. I use a7c, which has no record limit, & my m1 mac easily edits/previews the 4k footage... so not sure if its worth it for me in 2021, aside from moving from 420 to 422. hmm
I have a Sony HDV 1080 Camera with the mini tape deck, can I attached the Atomos Ninja V to my camera to only record off the Atomos Ninja V monitor/recorder into the internal SSD?
Either. If you have an input on the camera, you can use it (goes to the Ninja V via HDMI). If you don't, then plug into the Ninja V directly and adjust the frame delay for the incoming video in the settings (if you have the optional Sync module, it can calibrate the delay between audio and video automagically).
Thank you for making this video. Do you think I can buy this monitor for wedding video shoot? I have Sony a73 and I’m thinking of getting the monitor to improve my view. How about the face tracking on this monitor for moving object like weddings?

Really? I have graded a bit and it does feel like there's a bit more to it, but I figured that was the 4:2:2. I wonder if the file from the ninja v is 10 bit but the sony is only outputing 8 bit into it. Like upscaling 1080 to 4k... its still just 1080.
Just double checked, the a7iii definitely only outputs 8bit
Shoots in DNxHR for Windows people. Which is also what Resolve uses for their optimized media. That could save so much time..... Dang it Dunna, now I really want one.
Yes it sure does!! Haha I’m sorry! I can’t help but make people want things... links are in the description *wink wink*
@@dunnadidit Ha! I have to get clearance from the CFO (wife) first.
Haha!
Nice!!
Dunna is the man! Awesome videos bro
The fact that it's also a recorder and has whole bunch of features, makes it very temping for me also! 😁
Yeah if it was just a monitor it would be a very expensive monitor lol
Gerald Undone is our Master Splinter 😂 I also messaged him before I bought😎 great video bro! The small improvements to the a7iii and the future proof is worth the price tag for Sony shooters
Haha 😂 he’s definitely good if you need some nerdy advice!
Hey! Thank you so much! It’s all just me, shot, “performed” and edited 😁 I’m glad you liked it!
Something weird happened on the export from premiere I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks a ton! That’s awesome to hear!
Dunna Did It I mean, it just sounds like you’re cussing out the 29:59 recording limit, and I echo that sentiment.
@@dunnadidit you could potentially eliminate the sound via youtube studio. Its quite irritating.
That sounded like a phat bass drop.
I tried to get rid of it, unfortunately I couldn't get it to go.
Nice!
Yo!! So happy I found this channel. You’re such a good UA-camr 🙌🙌
Thank you so much Josh!
Seriously mate, that was such an informative video as I have been on the fence about the ninja 5 for so long 😂😂
I'm so glad to hear it was helpful!
@@dunnadidit yep the weight is a downside and I went and bought the cage as well. Nevertheless I am loving the ninja V, I hacd no regrets.
I noticed a solid jump in how much I can push the Luma values in post using the ATOMOS Ninja Inferno with the A6300 which shoots the same codec and data rate as the A7iii I believe. You’re gonna love it dude! Have fun!
That’s great to know! Like you said, I should see similar advantages with the a7iii, a6600 and a6400 then too! Cheers!
Yeah the screen recording, no time limit, and prores would be awesome for you!
Well, that's something I didn't know I even wanted. Thanks Dunna!
Haha my pleasure!
Ooh very interesting!
Now I really want this even though I use the SmallHD. But that external recording with no limit and editing from external drive could way improve my workflow! Dang it Dunna!
Dang it Matt!
Going to pick this recorder up. The unlimited recording limit improvement and less compression is worth the purchase in my eyes.
Totally! And they’ve got it in a crazy sale right now
Thank you for the support via Twitter! You are awesome!
My pleasure Eddie! Cheers!
Nice one! Would love to see a comparison video between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0
I'll keep it in mind!
That was definitely the #1 reason at first for me.
Off topic, but I bought one of those desks after your video and it is 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Thanks! I had been looking for a long time!
That’s so awesome! I’m glad you’re loving it!
Between those two I’d go tamron
@@dunnadidit is it a significant upgrade over Sony 28mm f2? 🤔
I don’t know that if call it an upgrade. They’re kind of for different purposes. The 17-28 will be more versatile and allow you to shoot wider.
I am excited I just received my
Atomos Ninja V today can’t wait to test it out
Question....do you need an ssd to use the monitor? Let’s just say I wanted to use it as a monitor and not as a recorder? Just external monitor?
Nope! You can just use it as a monitor. I do regularly
@@dunnadidit Awesome! I just bought one for a project and I started to get nervous. Thank you
Nice! You’ll love it!
Solid video, great info, 10/10 comedy 👍🏾
I am considering getting this recorder for my EOS R one day... It would get me the 4:2:2, 10 bit, prores... so it will get me an image quality upgrade. For now, I am just playing around and learning how to shoot video.
Yeah it’s seriously cool to be able to get 10 bit! But good call on playing around with the internal stuff first!
Is this correct?
youtube .. Why this not on my recommendation ? Damn I was looking for this .. Thanks for review Dunna
Yeah what the heck UA-cam! Haha! Thanks for watching!
Will file this away for future reference. Nice rundown! Stay warm!
Nice! Thanks!
When you have the a7iii and no flip screen it becomes super helpful for filming yourself haha.
That’s awesome about the c200 too!
@@dunnadidit Definitely, although I only have the C100 mark ii...so it effective extends the life of that now "vintage" cinema camera lol.
The flip screen aspect is definitely key though.
@@MarkHoltze is that fake 10 bit on your cannon like it is on the sony, or real 10bit with this?
I believe it is an ikea lamp. But this was a while ago.
The unboxing was hilarious! Thanks for that.
Haha thanks!
Good Video. I deliberated on buying one for about 2 weeks for my Sony FS5. Pro Res 4K/60p @4:2:2 10bit makes the Ninja V well worth the money.
Nice!!
11:23 ouch
Yeah not sure what the heck happened there, sorry.
Dunna Did It haha it happens keep up the good content! I would like to see “3 Months With The Átomos Ninja V- Thoughts Review”
Good idea!
@@dunnadidit Dude, would be nice that one!
I’m on the fence right now whether to buy this to turn that eight bit into 10 bit. Is it negligible when Pushing slog2 footage? Is
Artifact and banding less noticeable or about the same thanks dunna
Hold that thought! It doesn’t actually turn 8 bit into 10 bit! You’re still only getting whatever data your camera can output, you’re just putting it in a 10 bit container. So you won’t really get any more bit depth for color grading, the files are just more efficient for your computer to work with than the more compressed internal options.
I used to have a Video Device Pix video recorder which was able to record 60p Prores HQ even though I was outputting 24p from the camera. It kind of made an override of the incoming signal and recorded on to whatever framerate you selected.
How do you fix this? I’ve had this problem for so long.
thank you for providing insights on the atomos ninja v. bought for a year already and have not maximize on the usage.
Hey i finally subscribe!! Love you stuff man.
Thanks!!
The 5” is definitely a big different. I personally prefer the 5” to a 7” for what I do but it comes down to personal preference
I planned on upgrading my AndyCine A6 to the Atomos Shinobi, but you've talked me into going with the Ninja V when the time comes. Thanks! I think..
Nice!
Yeah it's definitely a flawed system still (as all are)
Such a good review! Keep it up 👍🏼
can you still use touch focus point with the external monitor?
Nope that would be cool tho
Being in lockdown for Coronavirus in Toronto, I am in same boat...have been thinking of this for 1+year...i might just pull the trigger... Do you think the Atomos Ninja V is still a good buy as of March/April 2020? Thanks for video.
Totally! I still love mine and there really isn't anything that matches its features and such so I'd say it's still a good one!
Aww man now I have to buy one now hahaha! Been debating it for a long time now. Thanks man! ahhhhhhh! Great video as always!
Haha I'm glad my video helped! Feel free to use those links in the description 😉
Hey! Really leaning towards this after your video. Only thing putting my off is no 1080 120fps. What happens if I try and film in 120fps with the Ninja V attached to my a7iii? Can it still be used as a monitor and just record to the cameras SD card?
I’m pretty sure you can still use it as a monitor and record internally.
Super vid, Dunna. I aim to buy the Atomos Shogun Inferno 7 to pair with my Nikon Z6 in order to go with ProResRAW. So, a specific purpose for it then. Cheers, brother of vid excellence! 💛
P.S., kitty cameo is touch of class.
Nice! Goin with the big guns! Haha Q-Bert loves to be the center of attention
That looks amazing, man. Would love to get my hands on that ninja! One day Thanks man. Great job as always 👊
Yeah it’s pretty cool! Thanks so much dude!
Nice vid! thx for tips :)
No unfortunately not.
Nice informative video, for me there are 3 things which are dealbreaker 1st face tracking AF 2nd Unlimited record time 3rd Luts, I don’t talk about things like free spinning tilting monitor A7III lacks
Those are pretty solid features! It definitely helps for the fact that the A7iii lacks a flip screen too!
If you don't have a hard drive plugged in and record straight to the SD card on your camera would Face Tracking still be available? or is Face Tracking disabled for any monitor that is plugged into the Sony A7iii
Face tracking is disabled if you’re recording internally on the SD card. You have to be recording to the ninja v hard drive
Excellent video. Thanks for doing this.
There’s a work around 30 min limit without having to buy a monitor. Do a search on UA-cam. I tried it on my a7s2 and a6500 both have no limit now.
That stopped working on the newer Sony cameras though. They stopped using playmemories which is where the hack happened. I had it on my a6500 before
Bought a Atomos Shogun Flame 4K. This has all this features but also have HDR monitoring and 1500 nits. And i bought it for 850 dollars with: Hdmi cabel, 240gb ssd, battery, smallrig cage/Sun hud and smallrig hotshoe. That was used marked.
Did I do a good deal?
Waaaaiting for that a7siii 🙈😄 and I am eying on the monitor for a while too. I‘m curious what you‘re gonna say in a few weeks or months 😊
I hear that for sure! I think this will still be super handy when Sony has 10 bit and 4k60 though!
I shot a whole video on it last week (for next Monday) and it was FANTASTIC. NOOOO REGRETS AT ALL!
With the a7sii you’ll notice a big difference in color ( 4.2.2 ) you won’t regret it . I used the ninja v on my sii and never recorded with out it 🙏🏽
Nice!
Great video. Doesn't the a7iii stop recording after 30 minutes. How then can the Ninja continue the recording?
You’re not recording in the camera. Just in the recorder/monitor 😁 the camera is literally just sending out a signal.
Can’t wait to get one for my X-T3. Waiting for a project that will require it haha
Haha I hear you. And you’ll get both 10 bit and glorious 4k60 (also, I recognize that you get those internally, but still...prores!)
Project Brickell thanks for letting me know! 🙏🏼will bare in mind when I buy
I still rock the a7s MK I with a 28-135 f 4.0 G OSS and just bought the Ninja V after 4 years owning the camera to finally be able to shoot in 4K.
Nice!!
Is it really 4k??? I thought the camera only outputs 1080 to the ninja.
Hi I'm french, ad I have a Sony a7iii with 3 lens.
I shoot in hlog 2 a'd have a Lilliput à 7s in external monitor.
And I have question, with atomos your quality image are more beautiful in propres 8bit to xvhc Sony compressed 8bit?
I don't if the price of atomos have more capabilities with my sony a7iii.
Thanks for your réponse 😁😁
It doesn’t improve the image quality a noticeable amount. More so the workflow and monitoring capabilities.
Any chance you can share what the mount is you used to hold the monitor in the hotshoe?
What camera bag do you have in the passenger seat at the 2:20 mark
It’s the Wandrd PRVKE 31L. My fav bag ever! geni.us/DUNNAPRVKE31
On the NinjaV. How come the recording button is grayed out on the monitor screen if the codec is ProRes RAW. But it is available on ProRes. I am also shooting on Sony A73
The a73 doesn’t output a signal that can be recorded to prores raw. You have to output raw video to make that happen.
Dunna Did It thank you. What codec do you use mostly on the A73?
I use prores 422
Hi I want one for all of the same reasons you have l have a6300 that’s shoots 6K and down sample it to 1080 or 4K is the atomosV going to read the 6K signal ??
Regardless I still want one
Do you have fan noises?? Other have returned it for that
JoP
It only reads the 4k signal because that’s all that the Sony’s output. As far as fans go, it’s there but it’s not that loud.
Dunna Did It so how far does that connector stick out before ti makes that right angle turn?
Love your videos. And I love your cat wanting to join the video!
great vid.. I use a7c, which has no record limit, & my m1 mac easily edits/previews the 4k footage... so not sure if its worth it for me in 2021, aside from moving from 420 to 422. hmm
I have a Sony Nex7 I know it’s a old gem 💎🔥💯 but will the ninja atmos give me 4K recording capabilities on a high end camera from 2013 😅💯
I don’t think so, it’s all about what the capabilities of the output of the hdmi are. In this case I think you’re stuck with hd

Haha yeah we had a pretty insane weekend of cold.
@@dunnadidit I'm glad it didn't snowed at all here in The Netherlands. Still happy with the Atomos?

Great video, thanks: question: my sony fs5 outputs hdmi at 4K 30 fps. Will de Ninia V record in 4K 60fps?
You mean, if you output 30fps over the HDMI, will the ninja turn it into 60? No I don’t believe that’s possible
I have a Sony HDV 1080 Camera with the mini tape deck, can I attached the Atomos Ninja V to my camera to only record off the Atomos Ninja V monitor/recorder into the internal SSD?
How long that battery you have on the ninja V. can last for a continous shooting ??
Did get a screen protector for it? I'm on the fence about getting one
I did, but I hated it so I took it off after like a week lol
@@dunnadidit thanks, I heard they are pretty bad and most people ripped it off. An alternative was to cut a iPad protector to the right size
Qn: do you plug in the mic into the recorder or into the camera jack?
Should I but it for my Sony A7iv ?
I need monitor
